We were in town for a show at Pappy and Harriets. Some of the locals had recommended C&S Coffee Shop for breakfast, so we thought we'd give it a try. This restaurant is stuck in a time warp. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. It was clean, just a little outdated. I particularly loved the framed kitten art on the walls. I kept looking around for more to keep me entertained. I ordered Eggs Benedict. It was average. The Hollandiase sauce tasted like it came from a can. Again, not a bad thing, but if you wanted to step up your game, making it fresh wouldn't be a bad idea. Spouse orders pancakes where ever we go. They said they were a little dry and not their favorite. Coffee was also average. The creamers on the table seemed hard to come by. This is the comforting old school type breakfast hole in the wall. It was a decently busy morning but they fit us in pretty quick. The locals in the area all said that this is "the" go to place here in town, so sort of hard to not give it a whirl. Let me just say that a 3 star review is not a bad review by any means. The service here, was friendly, but a bit awkward. We were sat and given menus then had to flag down our waiter to place our order (it's a small place). We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with a side of Biscuits and gravy to share. It was nice that they split the portions to two plates, even though we did not ask them to, they just knew we were sharing. The eggs we ordered over medium, and were cooked as expected. The home fries we ordered extra well done (I like some crisp on my taters, don't judge me), even stating that most places tell us to order them double deep fried. The home fries came out, barely cooked at all. The gravy which was for both the chicken fried steak and the biscuits came out cold, and even more cold when they took all of our meal to cook the home fries longer, which took about 15 minutes and were really no more done than before. Now everything was cold. The gravy did not really have any flavor on top of being cold, no pepper, no sausage, just sort of like a premixed powdered gravy. There are signs all over the place that all tips are cash only, and that there is a 3% discount for paying in cash. I get the 3% to cover the fees for using a credit card, especially at a small establishment, however I feel that a lot of people these days do not carry cash on them, and outside of the locals would not know that this was the norm here, and ultimately the wait staff would get the short end of the stick with their tips. I did find out that they are quick to state you can venmo or zelle your server directly, as I overhead this conversation on another table. This seems a bit awkward to me. This place has a very retro old local hometown favorite food vibe. The food reflects that as it is down to earth local food with its omeletes and pancakes. The omlettes are quite interesting as it does taste good but it comes in a rectangular brick shape. I suspect they make them in big batches and use a spatula and cut up the serving portion. In either case, it worked okay. My cousin got the pork chop and it was a pretty good size. The food was good for the rest of my party. The main thing that I didn't quite like was the coffee. For a coffee shop, I expected better, especially since the coffee shops in the area had some of the best coffee I ever had. Maybe I have too high of an expectation for coffee. But it does the job. Evidently, I haven't written a review here in quite some time. This is by far my favorite breakfastbspot in the area. I enjoy lunch here as well. Their pork chops breakfast is slamming! 2 huge chops, eggs. Potatoes. Toast, and a drink for like 17 bucks. All of their omelets are great. Pretty much all of their breakfast is delicious. Lunchtime sandwiches are all good. The few times we have been here for dinner it is always good as well. They'd close early for dinner but they are also open early for breakfast. Hash Browns cooked to Perfection ! Stopped by this historical "hole-in-the-wall" with great retro booth styling to get a standard American meal. I had the Chili Omelette , hash browns with side of cottage cheese. Was amazed at the quality & price combo ! The prices are great. This is your run of the mill cafe. The chili was warm but not hot. It came with some crackers. It was about $8 and the bowl was filling on its own. The cafe itself was old, retro but spotless. The furniture was very well cared for. The service was excellent. This seems to be a town where everyone knows each other. Went here on a week night with husband and 6yr old son. The place was absolutely and by far the best food I've had in years as far as eating out goes. Everything and I mean everything was perfect. Based on another customer's review, I ordered Liver and Onions. The meal included soup or salad, cornbread, veggies, mashed potatoes and gravy, and a lovely dessert. Everything tasted good, and the server was stellar. All of the customers and all of the staff radiated happiness and good-will. This place surprised me! Huge portions and awesome onion rings. My hubby and I came here before a hike. We got he generous house sandwich (chicken sandwich) with onion fries. Great little old school dinner/cafe with a counter and vinyl covered booths... To clarify, in case you're popping in because the place across the street had a line out the door, this is a coffee shop with drip coffee only, not an espresso bar, but they'll gladly pour you a cup to go if a basic tasty cup of Joe is what you need! There are daily specials with mid-century classics like meatloaf, cabbage rolls, hot turkey sandwich and pot roast (served with soup or salad, and a desert choice of jello or pudding). A good portion of what they serve is made in-house -- turkey, fried chicken, daily rotating soups and pot roast included! The country fried steak is tasty, but *not* hand-breaded, so it's *not* my go-to, but I've enjoyed every single other thing I've eaten from both the all-day breakfast menu and the lunch and dinner options. The best part of C&S though, is the service, particularly Julio! He is the sweetest guy you'll ever meet and he busts his butt to make sure everyone is getting the attention they need for a relaxing, filling meal (you're probably going to have leftovers!). This diner was really close to the AirBnB my friends and I had and we had this as our last meal before we headed out of Joshua Tree. There was definitely a homey vibe and they decorated for the holidays too so that was a plus. Wait staff was very friendly. Club Breakfast - 3/5, Okay this was definitely not the best diner breakfast I had. The scrambled eggs were weirdly squished flat and the bacon was cooked to a crisp and stuck together. The toast comes with cream cheese instead of butter which was new to me and pretty good. To me, the saving grace of this meal was the salsa that came with the table.
