Wasn't sure if the Dez was referring to the desert and the many treasures associated with a hot, an empty desert, or if it was referring to desert. Came here for brunch. I was already craving sandwiches so this was perfect. There is indoor seating and a bit of extra seating in the front patio. Menu is small but all the sandwiches sound really appetizing. While we were browsing through the menu, there was a patron that was ordering and out of nowhere fell to the ground, unresponsive. The entire restaurant went still, but the staff there quickly rushed to her and made sure she wasn't hurt and called emergency assistance. The woman eventually came to and the paramedics came to check her out. These types of situations are difficult and no one really knows what they would do in the moment. I applaud the staff for springing into action and for staying calm. After the commotion, the restaurant, still in shock, slowly went back to normal. I placed an order for the Roasted Turkey Breast sandwich. It came with a chipotle aioli, bacon, white cheddar, lettuce, and tomato. The sandwich came with a side of chips. I was not prepared for how big this sandwich was! I ate half and saved the other half for later. The sandwich was really delicious, fresh, and light. The bread was perfectly toasted. I can be picky with sandwiches, but I would definitely come back and try everything on their menu. Prices were reasonable as well. BLTs are my favorite sandwich, and they do a really good version. The bacon is cut/crumbled into smaller chunks, which gives the sandwich the most delightful crunch. The sourdough bread is rustic and yummy. I would have preferred crisp lettuce vs spring mix and juicier tomatoes (but I get that they are way out of season, so not their fault!) My husband loved his mesquite turkey toastie. Had a Reuben-ish quality with the melted cheese. There are a ton of fun specialty food options and Stumptown coffee to boot. Perfect lunch spot en route to the park. Note: it took 30 mins for our sandwiches to be ready on a busy day and there is limited seating. read more

The Dez is a fun little place to visit while you're in Joshua Tree. This place has tons of snacks and everything you'd need for a little charcuterie board or sweets after a day of hiking or sight seeing. It's also a good place to get gifts or souvenirs. There are apparently two Dez's and I believe this is the bigger one. I came in for coffee and a quick snack. I got a vanilla latte and a spinach and cheese quiche. Service was friendly and fast. Delicious, healthy food and warm service (4/5 Green Stars) I would definitely come here again and recommend trying it out for a meal or camping/hiking provisions. I had the Hummus & Lentil (V) - seasoned lentils tossed with lemon vinaigrette, baby lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes & red onion served on pita bread. I recommend eating it all together on the pita rather than deconstructing it with your fork, by the way! I also had the vegan sausage roll and thought it was excellent. And I know sausage rolls - they are one of my all-time favorite foods. The Beyond Meat sausage was combined with delicious pastry that was slightly spicy - I think they used Hot Italian sausages. And do not ignore the homemade ketchup that goes with it - it's really good! Staff members were very friendly and the restaurant is fun, unpretentious and stocked with good provisions. It's also dog-friendly, according to a cute write-up on DogTrekker : ) I'm giving the Dez 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the following: * A good chunk of the menu is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Reducing our meat intake is a key action for mitigating climate change, deforestation, water use, water pollution, and of course animal suffering. * Some ingredients for vegan dishes are organic - chickpeas for the wrap, brown rice for the Buddha bowl and cocoa for the almond joy date balls. * It's an inclusive restaurant - an important feature in this climate. * Room for improvement: skip the beef as it really has ridiculously big environmental footprints (carbon and land) compared to eggs, chicken, and pork. Came here for a quick breakfast before leaving JT. This is one of two spots called the Dez and this one serves meals as well as has seating vs the other spot which is primarily take away. We did come later around brunch time, approx 11:30 am and this place was super crowded. There is very limited outdoor seating and minimal indoor seating. Please be aware that dogs are permitted inside the cafe if you have allergies. Rock Climbers Brekky 4.5/5, this was a warm sandwich and very filling! They were able to put my bacon on the side as I don't eat pork so I was able to give this to my friend :) this definitely took some time to prepare though, expect about 20-25 minutes read more

Officially my fave cafe in JT! It's really small inside but they somehow have SO much stuff--lots of gourmet salsas, chocolates, ice cream, and other food items you can purchase to go or as gifts and plenty of ready made meals. There's also some savory pastries and desserts behind the cashier that I didn't try but they looked delicious. They also have a decent sized menu of hot and cold sandwiches. I got a bbq beef panini and omggg it was the perfect bite to have right before I left to go back on the road. Very tender meat, crispy bread, and just the right amount of sauce. The sandwich also came with some chips. They also have an amazing date shake that you can get with different types of milk but the cashier recommended oat milk and I do not regret that choice bcuz the drink was SOOO creamy. This is a relatively new location for the business and they have a full-size kitchen, which allows them to create really good, tasty food, but you don't have to wait forever to get it! I got the grilled cheese on the first day and added avocado and bacon. Delicious! My brother got the roasted turkey sandwich which was so good that we went back the next day and I got the roasted turkey sandwich and he got lox on a toastie. During our one-night camping trip at Jumbo Rocks in Joshua Tree National Park, we decided to skip packing all our cooking supplies. A quick Yelp search for sandwich spots with good reviews led us straight to Dez Fine Food, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation! They have two convenient locations, just a few doors apart. One specializes in warm sandwiches, which is perfect if that's what you're in the mood for, and it's also where you'll find the restroom. We tried the Desert Dirt Smoothie, a Tuna Melt, and for my boyfriend, the Pastrami and Swiss. Every item was delicious and truly hit the spot. Staff were super friendly and helpful. I was expecting slim pickings from Joshua Tree's restaurant scene given its more remote location but was pleasantly surprised by my meal at Dez. It's worth noting that there are a few locations (one is a takeout-only style place while we ate at the larger location ~30 seconds next door). Note that the menus are slightly different in each so I'd recommend walking over to the larger place unless you are solely looking for takeout. The line can be a little longer but moves quickly and staff are friendly and upbeat. There are ~6-8 indoor tables and a handful of other outdoor tables but we were able to take a seat (you'll receive a number with your order if you dine-in) pretty easily. The sandwiches are large and flavorful and the mesquite BBQ was filling (albeit a little on the heavier side as you'd expect). Great place to stop by on the way or after a hike through Joshua Tree and centrally located near all the other main shops (e.g. Joshua Tree Coffee Company and near the Farmer's Market). read more

I was just here about 15 minutes ago, and I have to say the lack of customer service was pretty surprising, especially for such a busy place where you'd think customer experience would be a priority. When I walked in, there were two lines and everyone behind the counter seemed busy. I wasn't sure which line was for ordering, so I asked someone else in line. They explained that the other line was for waiting on drinks, so I stepped aside and got into the correct line to order. I stood there for about five minutes and the cashier never acknowledged me, not even a quick "I'll be right with you." I eventually had to walk up and ask if that was where orders were taken. She confirmed it and said she'd be with me in a second. When I started ordering, I asked about their macchiato drinks. The cashier (a brunette) gave me a really unpleasant look, looked me up and down, and told me they didn't have what I wanted but that I could try something else. Her reaction honestly threw me off, so I decided to skip getting a drink altogether. There were a lot of items on the menu I was excited to try, but the cashier's attitude completely ruined the experience and made me feel like I was bothering her just by being there. I ended up paying about $30 for two Dez Club sandwiches, which is a bit on the pricey side. The sandwiches themselves were good, no complaints there--but because of how I was treated, I would not come back again. What to Order Breakfast paninis: Thick enough to be your new bicep workout. Plenty of bacon, egg & pesto to feel like you deserve that second helping  . Stumptown coffee: So robust, you'll either hug a J-tree or start a philosophy rant in 5 minutes. Wait Time Bring a book--or five. You might become one with your avocado panini before it arrives. But once that first bite happens, the wait feels justified. If you want the food quicker, they have a to-go satellite store right across the road (Psst! I perfer this one) Vibe & Staff Friendly like they're thrilled you survived the desert just to worship their sandwiches. Takes away that "I'm stranded in the Mojave" feeling. Pros: Gourmet food packaged like a hug. Stumptown coffee that actually wakes you up. Compact and Instagram-able. Cons: It's small. Unless you're a solitary yogi, seating might be a mission. Wait times can rival a snail marathon. They function at desert speed--don't expect Starbucks efficiency. Final Verdict: If you want to feel like a snack king or queen in the middle of the desert--and you don't mind looking like you wrestled a giant croissant--stop here. Just bring patience (and maybe a deck of cards). 5 stars for the satellite (mostly for their speed and amazing staff) 4 for their main store. Let's call in a 4.5! read more
