Great barbers. But it's no longer for me... I'd like to start by saying that this barbershop has very talented barbers and are usually friendly. Here is my experience. I started going to this barbershop early 2022. My hair style is a side part with a fade. Since then I've had Lorena and John take a crack at cutting my hair. I decided to stick to Lorena. Both are very talented but John makes too many sarcastic remarks and sometimes doesn't have a good attitude. So he simply was not the barber for me. Lorena has done a phenomenal job at cutting my hair these past couple of years. Recently I was late to my appointment due to personal reasons. I called ahead of time notifying the shop of my tardiness. Nonetheless, I took accountability for being late and told Lorena to only cut my hair if she felt comfortable in doing so. I would only ask her to cut the sides of my head and leave the top because I understand that other clients would likely appear for their scheduled time. So she proceeded to give me half the haircut. While I was getting the haircut John the boss asked Lorena if she would be able to finish the haircut. I perceived his tone as demanding and belittling. He repeated his question a couple of times to her. As a result, I decided to speak and let John know from across the room that Lorena and I agreed to only do what she can with the time available inside my appointment. I also told him that I take full accountability for my lateness. He said that my haircut takes long as it is and it causes stress. I asked him if I should look at booking a longer appointment in hopes to find a good solution for everyone. He said to book right before lunch time so that there were no clients after me. I felt that Lorena and others in the room had become a bit nervous about the conversation John and I were having. In the end I paid in full, tipped well, said happy new year to Lorena, and bye to everyone. Unfortunately, I've decided that it's best for me to move on. The whole exchange left me thinking that my hair style is too difficult or inconvenient for the shop to handle. I feel as if I am more of a burden even though I think it's a pretty common cut. This was also the first time I've ever been late. In fact, I regularly wait patiently for clients ahead of me and never complain. I always tip well because I like my barber and she does a great job. But I just can't shake the thought of being a burden or a source of stress. I also don't believe that impeding on Lorena's lunch is the solution. I wish everyone the best. The shop is clean, my appointment was on time, only took 30 mins and was a great deal at $40 for women's cut and $35 for kids, teens and men. Make sure you bring cash to pay. read more

I had the same "hair stylist" cutting my hair for 40+ years, after COVID she decided to change careers. I was overdue for a haircut when I found out she "retired" . I was a little apprehensive but was forced to change. At the time Yelp showed 50 reviews and five stars (which is pretty impressive), so I rolled the dice and scheduled a hair cut with John (owner). The shop and barbers have a extremely friendly/welcoming and have a comfortable vibe. At the same time they are very skilled and professional, I see why five stars! My stylist left the business, and these guys were close. I got a haircut from Adriana, and she did a great job! Not only that, it was fun to talk to her and she made sure the haircut was exactly what I wanted. It wasn't just a standard haircut, but eyebrows and back of the neck trimmed too, ending with a massage from a handheld massage machine. I recently moved to the neighborhood and went in for my first haircut today as a walk-in and unfortunately, they didn't have any openings. One of the barbers Monica asked for my name and number and said she'd call if anyone cancels. A couple hours later she calls and said she can fit me in today. What a great haircut and local business. Monica did an amazing job on my hair and the entire staff and owner John were great. I talked to the locals who have been going there for many years and it made me feel at home. This shop is a real gem. Me and my son have been a client for about 5 years. I really like this place... great neighborhood feel, pleasant banter without attitude, and top notch haircuts at a fair price. I usually see John the owner and honestly I've always had a great haircut. My son sees one of the other barbers at the same time I'm getting my haircut and his haircuts are equally as nice. It's always a consistently great haircut and fun to connect with the staff and other patrons. They all care about us as people which is so important. They keep it real and treat us like family. Now with all the COVID 19restrictions, John and his team have really stepped up the safety of getting a haircut. They are being very careful to follow the mandated guidelines and still provide an outstanding service. John and his barbershop are among very few true neighborhood barbers left. A student at USC, I have been to all of the barber shops downtown and paid up to 75 dollars for a rather basic trim. Not once has my cut been as customized as the cut I get when I go to John or to Monica in Lunada Bay. I grew up in the area and have probably been a customer for over 10 years now. Over the years, it's easy to notice how much pride John takes in his shop and as far as I'm concerned, it has become a staple of the community. Great place with very friendly people! Unfortunately, I must give them four stars for something. They were aware it was my first time there, but they didn't mention they're cash-only. There also wasn't any visible signage that mentioned it either. I would have given a tip as well, but my ATM doesn't allow small amounts. It was overall awkward to pay them. It may be a small gripe, but I'm a very small business owner, and I'm not nearly as successful as they are, and I accept card. What's their excuse? That gripe aside, they were all very awesome. They were friendly and skillful. One other simple issue is that the owner seemed to have a back-handed compliment for each customer, which was all essentially "Oh man, good thing we cut your hair, because it didn't look nearly that good when you walked in." He even said this to a guy with a buzz cut. The guy was bald, dammit! Good place, but bring cash and prepare for a bit of lighthearted pretentiousness. read more

Lunada Bay Barbers is my first choice to get my ears lowered. Been a regular for nearly 20 years. Family feel, always great conversation and sports to watch on the TV's. Kid and dog friendly also. They offer free coffee, Wifi, and plenty of great magazines to read while you wait. The atmosphere is open, well lit and very inviting. The staff is Top Notch! John the owner is a traditional Barber who can fade, clip and straight razor with the best of them. They also have great stylists available for women's and kids cuts. The staff is very prideful in their work and will gladly tune your hair up if your not satisfied with the first run. They are typically booked so you need to call and get an appointment.. I have been going to Lunada Bay Barbers for just over a year as I followed one of the stylists, Josie there from her shop that had closed. I love the atmosphere there as I have had many great conversations with all the regular customers. They seem to always be busy and to me that is a sign that they are doing something right. I have met John the owner once and he was very courteous as well as all the stylists are. They are cash only, however there is an ATM right next door or a Chase bank atm right around the corner. There are no credit card symbols in the window which should indicate to most people that they are cash only. read more
