Considering how expensive haircuts can be nowadays, I paid a pretty good price for damn near exactly the haircut I wanted. I walked in one fine Saturday afternoon and was greeted with an empty chair. The nice woman there sat me down and took a look at the reference photos I had. She did little bits at a time so I could decide when it got to the length I wanted, which I definitely appreciated. This did mean that it took a fair bit longer than usual but not too bad for a nice looking haircut. The two folks cutting hair wore masks which I personally appreciated during this very contagious season. Probably the second best haircut I've had in the last 10 years and this is the first time I've been here. Will definitely go again! read more

Quick and easy haircut by Jason! Jason is a no-nonsense, straight to the point kind of guy. He gets the job done. I showed him a picture and he made it look exactly like the picture. This was my first time here, since my normal barber is closed due to the pandemic. The haircut was outside, but covered by a tarp and umbrella, and in a very comfortable chair. He has this cool vacuum at the end, that makes sure you have no hair left anywhere (including your mask and shirt). Cash only, $23+$7tip Jason has definitely earned my business -- especially since the price is $12 cheaper than my regular barber! I will definitely be back here for my biweekly haircuts. read more

First the pros- fast and clean. Now the cons based on my experience and why I am giving 2 stars. I went in to trim my beard and stated clearly that I just want to get my beard trimmed. I came out with a goatee. For those of you who maintain their beards, you can imagine how painful that is. Imagine Papa Hemingway going in and coming out like Ralph Fiennes in Shakespeare. I wear glasses and take out my glasses when I am in a barbershop. I cannot see exactly what the barber is doing and I trust them mostly to do a good job. At least, I'd have expected the barber to ask me before taking out a part of my mustache. Also, to my horror, I realized the two sides of the mustache are not symmetrical now. It seemed like a traditional barbershop from yelp reviews and I thought the barber wouldn't experiment with my beard. The other weird thing was, the barber used the nozzle of what appeared like their vacuum cleaner to remove hair from my face. This seemed to be very dangerous and on hindsight, I should have objected to it at that time. I am new to Redondo beach area and so I kept quiet. In short, I wouldn't go back to this place. read more

Really solid barber shop in Redondo. Quiet, clean, no bells and whistles, just an old school, simple barber shop. Great fade haircut+ beard line up. Straight razor and hot towel treatment. He was very precise and took his time. Nice flat screen on the wall to watch the news while you're in the chair. He was very polite and professional. Cash only, no cards, street parking on PCH. Highly recommend. *Update from 04.09.2018* If you come here and the Asian gentlemen barber isn't working, leave immediately. I stopped in on a Monday and he wasn't there so I saw the only other barber that was in, an Asian female "barber". Very nice lady but horrible at a basic fade haircut and beard line-up. I had to ask her twice to fade the fade in more as there was a clear disconnect between the bottom and the top. Her beard line-up was done crooked and done way to high on my jaw line. I had three little nicks on my neck+ razor burn. She has no idea how to shave a mans face or neck. The gentlemen barber who's always in here is solid and does a great job. She needs a lot more training and education. Fellas, stay away from her. read more

This is the first time Yelp has let me down. :( I went in for a haircut based on the previous reviews. I wanted a simple fade on my sides and back with a light trim on the top. I came out with nasty fade on both my sides that dips in near the top. The guy barely even cut my hair on the top of my head. I don't think I would have minded much if the haircut was relatively cheap but it was $19! WTF?! $19 for a shitty haircut? No way, Jose! Learned my lesson here and definitely won't be back in the future. For those of you that want a decent haircut for a good price, Menstar is NOT the place to go. read more

Almost afraid to mention this place it's so perfect. Jason is a pro fast, clean and very nice. It's a man's barber shop. No gel just scissors and clippers. He even talked me out of a crew cut. Even with two guys a head I was out in 20 minutes. Spend more at Floyd's for ambiance, or get the real deal at this place. read more

Okay, so this is gonna' sound kinda' crazy. (names changed to protect the innocent) SO... two weeks ago I decide I'm a flabby mess. I commit to a SIX WEEK BOOT CAMP to get fit. You still with me ??? I sign up for the camp, then walk into this CLASSIC BARBER SHOP and tell the dude, cut off all my hair! Well, at least please give me a military buzz cut. In my mind, when the hair grows back in 6 weeks... I'm fit! The Dude snaps into action, and now I'm transported back to Mayberry RFD (98% of readers will NOT get the reference). Let's just say, I'm feeling at home, in a small town, with someone who CARES. A flat hot razor, and foam? Really ??? In Vegas this wouls be $75 ! Okay... you get it... check this place out. Friendly owner, good price, and he takes his time to make sure it's right. He still uses a straight razor with hot foam to shave the back of your neck too. Just went for my first haircut at this barbershop and had a great experience. My son, a 2 year old, went there as well, and they are great with young children too. This barbershop is about substance, and less about style. It has everything a barbershop needs, no more, no less. They were polite, I had very little wait, I sat down and watched a basketball game on the nice flat screen TV. There's no loud banging music like at Floyd's, and the barber actually knew what he was doing, unlike the last lady who cut my hair (also at Floyd's). Bottom line, this place is no nonsense, just a nice haircut, a TV to enjoy, and great service. I agree with James C's review, this is a man's barber shop. Add the proximity to the beach and Riviera Village, and it's hard to beat. read more

I've been taking my 2 sons to get haircuts from Jason when he used to be in Torrance on PCH. He ran a barber school so he totally knows what he;s doing. I've taken them both to other men's hairsalons out of pure convienence and each time I've said, " I shoulda just taken them to Menstar". We have been regulars for the past 15 plus years. Jason has cut my hair and my two boys, now teenagers, since they were toddlers. Always cuts how we ask and has good attention to detail. Depending on when you arrive there could be a wait as he doesn't rush on one to get to the next. During lobster season expect him to close on time as he will be heading out to catch bugs. Bring cash. There is also a gal who is there on his rare off days who is an independent contractor, not his wife lol as some thought. She does a good job but I prefer Jason who knows my 'usual'. read more

I got a haircut here yesterday and I don't think I would come back again. don't get me wrong, this is a decent barbershop(except for a few things), but it's just not for me. Picked this place by going through a ratings & reviews for a few suggested ones by yelp. Positive things from most of the reviews are true. e.g. quite place, not much small talks etc. Seems to me some locals do come here often for a long time. Unfortunately this is not the place for me and here's why: 1. the price. I'm not expecting to pay close to $30 for a one dollar sign place. I think this one is on yelp tho. haircut starts at $23 (cash only) and for the amount of work that is done, I've had a slight better cut in SGV for $10. 2. what I asked for is not well perceived. the only thing he asked me is how do I want the cut to be done and I said cut the side and the back with size 0, and preserve the volume and the length on the top. he used size 1 instead and cut almost half of my hair on top. He did the cut with one iteration so when I realized how much he's cutting the top part off, I got no option other than letting him finish the remaining. I have to ask him to trim the sides twice before I realized he did not understand what I asked for at all. 3. the final delivery wasn't great. I didn't noticed this until I got home but my sideburns on both sides are half an inch different in length. I walked out of the door with disappointment. To be fair, although he's no the best barber, he knows the type of cuts he's familiar with. If that's exactly what you need, great for you. read more

One of the best (and fastest) haircuts I've ever had. A totally no nonsense, no BS, NON-HIPSTERY, old school barber. The shop was clean but cluttered, but you kind of expect this from a shop that's been around for this long. I would say it added to the barbershop feel rather than taking away from it. I would've given it a 5 Star rating, but it is cash only, so I had to go get cash and come back. A solid 4.5 rating from me though. read more

I have been with Jason for decades. I grew up with him cutting my hair as a middle school kid and I have NEVER been disappointed (and it is admittedly hard to keep a brat kid happy!) He has a deep passion for what he does and it is evident in his customer service and hair cut quality. This is an old fashioned barber shop with the razor shave also. He is an artist with a razor! I originally liked this place because it was straight out of the fifties. jazz playing, hot foam dispenser, straight razor fresh from the Barbasol and a meticulous haircut from the an Italian barber that is no longer there, but I have been back a few time since. *******WARNING******WARNING********WARNING*********WARNING*********** I was given a MULLET!!!!! How "#3 all around with faux hawk on top and cleaned up at the bottom" was translated into "a Tennessee Waterfall", "Extra wide whitewalls", "an El Camino", "a Beaver paddle" I will never know. All kidding aside, I have had the Korean co-owner a few times and he has always SUCKED!!!! This time he ruined me!!!! After calling my family in crisis mode, I went back for repairs. The barber was overtly pissed that he had to fix his mistake. Like a pouting child he did everything but stomp his feet. Twice I had to say he wasn't done blending the sides with the back. Now I have a haircut from the Apollo Space program. Something I never wanted!! And towards the end he took out his aggressions by scouring my head hard with his vacuum.
