The fish cutlets come in three pieces per an order with a spicy mayo dipping sauce and while pricey for $16, I felt were worth it. The lamb lamprais was great! It came wrapped in the traditional banana leaf and had really soft and flavorful rice, pieces of lamb, one egg, daal, and eggplant moju. They had also included some sautéed onions, though I would have preferred seeni sambol. This is not a cheap dish at $32, which makes sense given the high quality ingredients and how labor and time intensive it is to make. I love Sri Lankan and South Indian food and this is a great addition to the neighborhood! I wish they will start delivering on Uber eats - just an easier way to order than bento. read more

Shared a bunch of dishes across our table on a Saturday -- standouts were the sura puttu (baby shark), like a spicy crab meat hash; the string hopper chicken biryani was like a spicy Indian lo mein, never had anything like it; and the short rib kari, which was rich and deeply flavored. If there were any complaints, it would be that the flavor profiles of some of the other dishes were very similar (like they reached into the same spice mix for each one), so they somewhat blended together, and the service was a both too fast (like eight dishes came all in a rush rather than spaced) and too slow (servers disappeared when we needed more rice or drinks) at times. I can't believe I've lived in the UES for 6 years and just found out about this place!! As someone that grew up on Kerala food- this place is bomb!! We got the deafman shop tawa fish fry, the Kerala beef and the string hopper chicken biriyani. The chicken biryani was delicious and it came with yogurt that we were able to top off- the Kerala beef did not disappoint either! Hands down recommend those two items to anyone, especially if you're not familiar with Indian food. The fish fry was just OK, it was kind of a let down but I'm glad we tried it. As a South Indian and a lover of Sri Lankan food, I can guarantee that Lungi is the real deal. Two out of three in our dinner group were vegetarian and so we went all vegetarian family style. Cauliflower 65. the appetizer was phenomenal. As a Chennai native, where chicken 65 was invented, I tell you this is a fantastic dish and their rendition is pretty authentic. And not too oily for a fried dish. The mayo We shared hoppers and string hoppers with three types of curries: eggplant moju (the recipe has fish flakes, I am not sure if this one does) cochin kadalai curry (dark chickpeas) and jackfruit curry. My favorites are in that order. The eggplant curry was delicious. It also has pearl onions. I am sure they will do excellent goat and fish too. We shared wattalappam, a dessert made with coconut milk, jaggery and cardamom but it is like a custard/creme brûlée. A very subtly flavored and tasty dessert. Service is great too - attentive, friendly and prompt. Ambience is lovely; I would like the music tuned down a bit, but it is not as loud as certain other city establishments. The manager visited our table several times to make sure we were enjoying our experience, which echoed the warmth we noticed among all of the wait staff. What we ordered: * I am a coconut water enthusiast, so I opted for the guava coconut martini. The food was spicy, as expected for a South Indian restaurant, so the coconut water provided the perfect balance. * Highly recommend ordering family style; we started with the deep-fried mutton rolls, then moved to the fish cutlet and masala dosa, and finished off with the chicken kothu. While I'm not normally a fan of fish, the fish cutlet was exceptional and slid right off the bone. The chicken kothu, a classic Sri Lankan dish, was to die for and was the favorite among our group. The food here was really good, we enjoyed the shrimp koliwada, a hopper, and one of the curries. I would go back for the shrimp again! We also tried the Kothu roti, but in my opinion it wasn't up to par with the rest of what we tried. Of note was also the chutneys that came with the hopper. I came to Lungi for lunch with some close friends on Sunday with very high expectations. Entering the space, I was excited to see the main host in an actual Lungi (good ventilation and mobility). The food was overall quite tasty (fish cutlets, kothu, tawa fish fry, chicken porichathu) BUT the "brunch" menu was limited and didn't have hoppers. I mean it should be front and center and a staple in a brunch menu and it wasn't - you need to add them all (regular hoppers, egg, string, the works); also they didn't have the kerala beef which is a very hard dish to find and this second blow was very demoralizing. Also, our crew ordered a mix of apps and mains and asked the waitstaff to bring 'em all out as they were made but the masala dosa took forever and my 11 year old nephew had to wait so long. I felt bad for him. The dosas btw were excellent (masala and plain) and our waitress was very nice and attentive. That said, this is a nice higher end restaurant where you can introduce your American coworkers or friends to Kerala and Sri Lankan food. Crab soup was excellent, but, probably a little too spicy for an American palate. Mutton Chinese rolls were great and authentic. We got the hoppers and egg hoppers with jackfruit curry. Much to our disappointment, the hoppers were Kerala style and not Sri Lankan style. Jackfruit curry wasn't really "polos", but more of a mature jackfruit curry. Had the watalappan for dessert and the color was not authentic but the taste was fine. I was told that the color was off as the dark authentic color apparently turned off customers. I also absolutely loved the lamb biryani - this was one of my faves! They have great naans, I got a cheese one and the chili mushroom naan (had never seen a chili mushroom one on a menu before - take note of the chili and order based on your taste buds)! There's a great selection of cocktails - I had too many The 'East Side' has hibiscus infused gin and is made with an egg white and topped with a cinnamon stick - super cute! The 'Chili Lychee Martini' was delicious with the fresh lychees inside it! the worst south indian restaurant in nyc! let me rephrase it - the worst restaurant in nyc in the price range. bar none. worst hostess. clueless servers. worst food. we came to this resturant at 5:20pm. the doors were closed, even though the opening hours, according to their websites are from 5pm. through the glass doors we could see the hostess and she saw us. not only she did not rush to open the doors, she ignored us standing outside in a pouring rain. only after someone inside the restaurant told her to open doors, did she slowly moved as if doing us the greatest favor. we should have left right there and then and go to chola, which has 1000 times better food and service, but the rain was heavy, so we decided to stay. big mistake. huge ! the same rudest hostess pretended to take us to our table and then simply disappeared, leaving us standing in the middle of the restaurant. another server finally took us to our table. then came a menu. 1 person in our group was vegan. the young waitress assured us that all items marked with 'v' are vegan, including paneer. our vegan friend often dines in indian restaurants, yet never had vegan paneer. we made the waitress confirm with a chef. of course, paneer was vegetarian not vegan. our friend wanted to order dahl. the same clueless waitress insisted that accept paneer, all other 'v' dishes were vegan. about 1/2 later she finally admitted that dahl had ghee, making it non-vegan. the many offers no vegetables. the place has the audacity to charge $5 for a bowl of rice. speaking of rice, we all greed that even uncle ben's instant rice put to shame the stale rice they serve. stale rice in an indian restaurant? that was the 1st. outrageous prices for a pretentious place that has the audacity to talk about villages and street food of shri lanka. you can buy entire village for what they charge for 1 dish. they also try to fool ignorant people into believing they have any michelin ratings. yelp needs to introduce negative ratings. only then we can give the place the rating it deserves. minus 5 stars. read more
