I'm not quite sure what he considers over priced - they certainly fall far from this category. We eat here a couple times a month. The food is very authentic and quite delicious. The prices are sick low and let me explain. I can order three tacos, one chicken enchilada and a side of rice and beans. Someone else can order three tacos, a side of rice and beans...and a second basket of chips and salsa. You know what our bill was??? $15.60. Seriously??? If that's too expensive then try making that at home for that...lol. All things said - it's a little nugget In bernalillo. A town where there aren't many solid options unless you want to head over the Range or Flying Star... Not much to look at but definitely some of the best actual Mexican food in New Mexico. One cook and one waitress, so you may have to wait, but the food is worth it. Hidden gem in Bernalillo, we went to Arables in Santa Fe the night before after seeing it on Diners Drive in's, and Dive's. We both preferred the meal we were served at Lupe's. We split the Molcajete and although it was more than enough for.both of us I overstuffed myself to finish it because it was so good. The tortillas were made in house and Oh so good. I wish we staying for another day so I could try out some more entrees. We definitely will on our next visit to the Albuquerque area. read more

Lupe's is an enjoyable family-owned restaurant where you feel like family. The food tastes like your abuelita made it because Lupe and her husband make the food themselves. The service is also the best, they're very friendly and will give you as much salsa and drink as you want. I usually get the taco plate with half asada and half pastor, and they've always been enjoyable. Lupe's prices are very reasonable and they have specials throughout the week that are a great bargain. Mediocre place for decent Michoacano Mexican food, not New Mexican. It's not as cheap as Tijuana but reasonable. Cheap specials are ok but there are some pricey plates, like chicken mole. Although the word "antojitos" is used for fast food, there are many dishes here that could serve as a main meal. For those people who are sensitive to food additives, preservatives, and other chemicals, be careful. It gave me a cough for an hour and not from the spice or seasonings. The food is certainly good and as spicy as you like it. Everything I tried used to be tasty. Recently, the food quality has dropped a tier. I got the chicken mole, which was once delicious. Well, the mole sauce was good but the chicken and rice were dry and the size was very small, quail-size chicken. There are lunch specials. Don't assume free refills of anything, always ask. The charge for seconds of chips and salsa and don't even fill up the first serving. Service was kind and quick on the first visit. But on the second visit, it was slow. Visit at your own risk but I'd say it's not worth it anymore. read more

I ordered "caldo de res" for the 3 rd time and every time was the same disappointment, for $10 I expect much more than what I got the 3 different times I gave it a try. The only vegetables were squash, carrots and a little piece of cabbage, no potato, no corn, and just a tiny piece of meat with a bone as big as the palm of a hand ... The chicken soup was mostly tasteless, the vegetables were barely cooked, and I got the impression that it was thrown together just before being brought out. Today, I had the Chicken Mole, which when cooked right is total Mexican comfort food...cooked badly, can be a disastrous viscous mess. But based on all the past meals, I went for the Mole. DELICIOUS! It does not disappoint! And an obligatory order of corn tortillas comes with this magnificent dish of a tender and succulent chicken thigh and leg covered in rich dark spiciness! So, definitely, if you love a good mole as much as I do, then Lupe's is ready when you are! Now that i got that out of the way, I've been following Lupe's since my first visit to abq. This is real and legitimate mexican food from Mexico. (NOT NEW MEXICAN) Lupe's has the best dishes. I have tried their chilaquiles, barbacoa, tacos de papa, carne asada, and costillitas. They are just as good as my grandma's in Mexico city. The tomatillo salsa is very tasty and spicy enough. The chuletas are incredible. They also have real homemade corn tortillas. I make it a point to come eat at Lupe's everytime I am in New Mexico. Molcajete with asada is worth a very long drive (never had it before coming here, now I am totally hooked). Chilaquiles with asada are also gold. The caldo de res is delicious, so is the caldo de albobdigas when they have it in the winter. Homemade chips and tortillas. And the salsa verde is maybe best in town.
