We stopped by for lunch while we were in town, looking for some Mexican food. The restaurant feels like you are eating at someone's house and staff is so friendly. We started off with chips and salsa. The salsa tasted homemade and fresh and had a good, but not too strong kick to it. I had ordered the chicken flautas and my husband got Abuelita's Tacopilla with green chile. I was not impressed with my flautas, as they were nice a crispy but the chicken had no flavor it it. Everything else was good, and my husband enjoyed his food! Overall, I would definitely go back for chips and salsa but would try something else on the menu and maybe avoid chicken dishes. read more

Abuelitas is not a very nice neighbor. They put a fence around the parking lot of a building near them so people cannot park there. This makes the building unusable. They drove another restaurant in the same building out of business. Bernalillo needs more restaurants and this doesn't help the town at all. Abuelitas has enough business. They don't need to use underhanded tactics to get rid of the competition. read more

Stopped by this place on a trip to Santa Fe as my mom had been to this place years back. We got a variety of dishes: green chille stew, red and green chilli with beans, sopapillas, the tocopilla, the Abuelitas enchiladas, and a quesadilla. The green chilli stew was by far the best dish. Super tasty. The red and green beans and chilli are definitely authentic NM! They are good and worth getting if u are in the area. Different from what other states/people think chilli is. The food was all fresh but those are the highlights. Cute atmosphere inside and we just got stuff to go but they were very nice and inviting. I recommend if you are in the area. read more

While the food is pretty typical for a northern New Mexico cafe, what we enjoyed the most was the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. We felt like we were surrounded by friends and neighbors. I enjoyed their green chile stew that was full of vegetables (zucchini, yellow squash, green beens, tomatoes) and cubes of flavorful pork. I added a side chicken enchiladas for $5. When it comes to a relaxed, comfortable, authentic New Mexican, Abuelita's is absolutely fantastic. This was our second visit (the first was a number of years ago (thank you COVID)) and it was such a great visit. Abuelita's is a small, unassuming restaurant that would be easy to drive by, but I guarantee stopping won't be a mistake. Inside it's warm and welcoming, and keeping true it's name (Abuelita's is Spanish for 'little grandmother' or "granny'), there are dozens of photos of real-life Abuelita's that have been gifted adorning the walls, giving it a very homey, lived-in feel. We were seated immediately (it was after the lunch rush) and our server was there right away to take our drink orders. The menu is a printed, stapled affair with breakfast on the first page and lunch/dinner on the second. The menu is pretty sizable, given the size of the restaurant, and everything is prepared fresh. As we were seated our server asked if wanted chips and salsa (seriously, does anyone ever say "no" to that question?), which generally means there's an upcharge, but of course we said "Yes". As I perused the menu I kept coming back to the Chile Rellenos...then I'd get interested in something else...then I came back to the Chile Rellenos...so I gave in to the Chile Rellenos. When asked if I wanted Red, Green, or Christmas my answer was, of Christmas. Being the (at that point) only guests in the dining room, our food was delivered in about 10 minutes. It was hot, fresh, and presented very nicely. And. It. Was. Delicious! Getting my food Christmas meant it came with both red and green salsa (prepared on site). This batch of green was pretttty spicy, but OOOHH so good! Our serve was GREAT. She was spot-on with the drink refills and she (and two other people) stopped by several times to see how things were. You can tell that the staff at Abuelita's loves what they do. It's a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and I'm kinda sad because I know it'll be a while before I can visit again. read more

Nice comfy little place. Normally. Not real impressed with the Mexican food in most restaurants. Because we're so used to it this place. The chili had enough of a bite to make it really good. The service was very nice. The waitresses we're constantly over there refilling my coffee. Really? Everything about this place was just pretty exceptional. A Staple! A place where locals eat! Purely New Mexican... those are all things that come to mind when you are looking for food! Abuelita's is purely Bernalillo and northern New Mexico. It is located in a small, older building and is unassuming! BUT!! The magic and care inside is amazing!! I always have the same thing when I go, which isn't on the menu! It is a bowl of beans, side of green chili, and side of chicharrones, and tortilla!! None of this is store bought this stuff is the real deal made in house! And you can taste the family recipes and love in every bite!! What I do is mix all the stuff together and eat it with tortilla! Their chili is HOT so beware! The staff is amazing! We were craving some good Navajo tacos while we were visting and my sister started searching around and we came accross this place. The reviews were good and we decided to give it a shot! We ordered ahead of time before we got there since we were just passing by. Once we got there the lady at the front was so nice and welcoming and answered all our questions! The navajo taco was just was we wanted we ordered a red and green chilie one, we really enjoyed the green chilie more since it was a bit more spicer. The red chilie one did not taste as good, it tasted like red enchilada sauce in my opinion. The meat was well flavored and the toppings were fresh! The beans needed a little bit more salt but we will be back when we come back in to Albuquerque! read more

Decided to give Abuelita's a try for the first time, and all I can say is WOW!! As soon as you walk in the door, you feel welcomed and greeted by everyone working the front of the house. Our first encounter was Renee, who was bussing tables, getting drinks, or whatever you needed. She was so nice and never let you want for anything. Second was our phenomenal waitress, Lilliana, who was just amazing. Third was another waitress Amy who also checked up on us. Now for the food! It was the absolute BEST, in my opinion. The salsa had such a great flavor. We had the taco plate, bowl of menudo, and fajitas at the restaurant. My tacos were crunchy and flavorful, the menudo was really good and had a lot of meat in according to my dad, he enjoyed it throughly, and my mom ordered steak fajitas. That meat melted in your mouth and had such a great flavor. My dad and I know what we will be eating next time we go, which I'm already dreaming about . We also ordered 2 to go orders, and for 5 meals and 2 orders of chips and salsa, we paid $103 without tip. For the quality of food and the amount you get, it was so affordable! Oh, and 2 orders of natillas to go as well. I HIGHLY recommend Abuelita's not just for the food but also how they make you feel at home and like family! Today we were at UNMH Sandoval Regional Medical Center so we decided to stop in for breakfast. Eric had a 2 egg breakfast with hashbrowns, bacon and wheat toast. He said it was excellent. OMG my mouth is on fire!! *I am not a native New Mexican-so take that with a grain of salt. Or with whatever makes your mouth less on fire. This is "Grandma's", so it's meant to feel (totally guessing) like grandmas dining room. It's a big dining area, with pine kitchen tables and lots of hustle and bustle. Lots of stuff to chose from on the menu. I picked the tamales. Our waitress (was it grandma?) advises that they were pork with red Chile inside. Duly noted.....I rolled the dice. Woweeee- quick a kick in the pork. The plate came with rice and beans, and a sopapilla (more on that later) and was very filling. If you are a New Mexican, you order your meal with both red and green Chile, called "Christmas". Hubs, native New Mexican, ordered an Indian Taco "Christmas". Having now lived in Seattle for the past 13 years, his spice-o-meter is broken. So his mouth was on fire. Pro-tip: if you're unsure, order it on the side. I would have preferred whole beans and the rice was okay. Sopapillas!! MUST HAVE!! It's like dessert with dinner. They are light, fluffy pillows of bread and you drizzle honey inside and devour. Bottom Line: A diamond in the rough where you can score good to very good New Mexican cuisine from exceptionally friendly & engaging staff at prices in line or slightly below competition in the area. Top Line: I am late to discover the jewel that is Abuelita's New Mexican Kitchen, across the street from the Bernalillo Feed Store (if you need an equine landmark). A friend & I settled on this restaurant for lunch, since neither of us had been there before. Online reviews were positive and food pictures looked appetizing, so the odds were in our favor. Friend settled on their Navajo taco after some equivocation over the many tempting options. I couldn't make up my mind, so copped the combination plate (chile relleno, cheese enchilada, & a hard shell taco with chicken for me today) and a bottled beer to wash it down. Negra Modelo was about as dark as they had, so that's how I flew. Navajo taco was mondo & piled high. It well filled the dinner size plate it arrived on. Big enough that my partner in savory adventures took some home for later. It got passing grades on flavor & texture. The hard shell taco portion of the combination plate arrived solo a few minutes ahead of the cooked entrees. I'd give the taco 3 stars for being pretty typical, neither exceptionally good nor notably bad. Chicken was okay in flavor with salt & pepper spicing and fresh enough lettuce shreds and tomato chunks filling the upper stories of the commercial grade hard taco shell. While acceptably fresh, the vegetation was grocery store grade on the flavor front, somewhat flat & bland. The rest of the combination plate was again acceptable in flavor and texture, with the chile relleno being notable for having a nice spicy kick to it & enough breading to bring it's substance to the mix without overwhelming the chile within. The green chile sauce on it was on the mark for taste, heat, and quantity. Enchilada was also okay, although a bit dried on the ends from baking. I found it lacking the full-to-oozing-out-the-ends quantity of cheese in the most righteous of enchiladas. This was a more skinny version. Red chile sauce was flavorful and not particularly scorching on the heat. My impression was that the kiddies would be safe with this one. The refried beans and rice were okay to good. Portions were usual size scoop of each. Up to the standard, but not setting new bars for what you should expect. So the food overall was passable to good to a bit above average. The staff, on the other hand, were indeed setting a high standard for what gold star customer service & focus looks like. Even the random staff who weren't directly serving us were friendly & solicitous. Gotta give a huge shout out & deepest appreciation to our waitress Miriam, who raised our dining experience into the stratosphere with her bright, friendly, enthusiastic, & engaging personality, plus her conscientious attention insuring we didn't need or want for anything while eating or lingering a bit after the meal. She is what your dream waitperson looks like in terms of interaction & providing service. Just a delight to have as part of our get together. So don't let the somewhat rustic exterior (or interior) of Abuelita's steer you away from checking out these folks. They are well worth the drive to Bernalillo to find them. read more

I usually get the tamales but this one was especially dry and bland. Abuelita's is a MUST visit whenever we are in the Albuquerque area! We just stopped here on our way to Taos because the Chile con queso (HOT!!) is so memorable. Seriously so good. We also got the calabacitas flat enchilada today, and the calabacitas were so silky and flavorful, the green sauce was super hot and delicious, and the sopapilla at the end of the meal was light and shatteringly crisp. This is one of the real gems of Bernalillo. Great atmosphere and loved they had pictures of so many Abuelita's in the restaurant. The staff was very friendly and made sure we were taken care of with drinks and anything we needed. My son decided to go for the special Tacopilla with beef and we were not disappointed and it is a big portion so some came home. I had the Navajo Taco with beef and was one of the best we ever had cuz you gotta share . The red chili was nice and on the thicker side and had a great heat and it snuck up on you at the end and the Green chili had chunks in it if the chili which I love and was a little less hot. Both the chips and the tacos are homemade and one of my favorites I have had in 5 years I have lived in New Mexico. They are open for breakfast at 8am and lunch and close at 3pm and they are closed on Sunday and Monday. read more
