Chile Relleno Plate - yum! Spicy green Chiles
    Kayleigh W.

Oh how I missed New Mexican food! Chile Rellenos just aren't as satisfying when they aren't hatch chiles. Our waitress was friendly and attentive with the food coming out quick. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal the first and second time as left overs. I'd go back to Abuelita's!

Stopped by this place on a trip to Santa Fe as my mom had been to this place years back. We got a variety of dishes: green chille stew, red and green chilli with beans, sopapillas, the tocopilla, the Abuelitas enchiladas, and a quesadilla. The green chilli stew was by far the best dish. Super tasty. The red and green beans and chilli are definitely authentic NM! They are good and worth getting if u are in the area. Different from what other states/people think chilli is. The food was all fresh but those are the highlights. Cute atmosphere inside and we just got stuff to go but they were very nice and inviting. I recommend if you are in the area.

One of our favorite restaurants for New Mexican food. The staff is always so friendly and the flavor of both the red and grene chile is great. Their salsa is also top notch. It's definitely worth the drive from Abq.

Oh! My God this place is amazing we had the Navajo tacos and they are the best enough to bring some home for Dinner the red chili sauce is also great the green hatch chili was my favorite its like a gravy Went back again and had Sopapilla stuffed with meat and beans and lettuce and tomatoes very good The carne adobada was also great not to mention the tea also. Every waitress there were very sweet and professional. The ambiance was beautiful and a very clean restaurant. If it was open later we would go twice a day Definitely recommend to try

Our server Liliana was fantastic! The green chile was nice and hot just like she told us. My chorizo burrito was tasty and the pancakes delicious. This will now be a regular stop

While the food is pretty typical for a northern New Mexico cafe, what we enjoyed the most was the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. We felt like we were surrounded by friends and neighbors. I enjoyed their green chile stew that was full of vegetables (zucchini, yellow squash, green beens, tomatoes) and cubes of flavorful pork. I added a side chicken enchiladas for $5. The taco salad was also a meal in itself. Very fair prices.

When it comes to a relaxed, comfortable, authentic New Mexican, Abuelita's is absolutely fantastic. This was our second visit (the first was a number of years ago (thank you COVID)) and it was such a great visit. Abuelita's is a small, unassuming restaurant that would be easy to drive by, but I guarantee stopping won't be a mistake. Inside it's warm and welcoming, and keeping true it's name (Abuelita's is Spanish for 'little grandmother' or "granny'), there are dozens of photos of real-life Abuelita's that have been gifted adorning the walls, giving it a very homey, lived-in feel. We were seated immediately (it was after the lunch rush) and our server was there right away to take our drink orders. The menu is a printed, stapled affair with breakfast on the first page and lunch/dinner on the second. The menu is pretty sizable, given the size of the restaurant, and everything is prepared fresh. As we were seated our server asked if wanted chips and salsa (seriously, does anyone ever say "no" to that question?), which generally means there's an upcharge, but of course we said "Yes". As I perused the menu I kept coming back to the Chile Rellenos...then I'd get interested in something else...then I came back to the Chile Rellenos...so I gave in to the Chile Rellenos. When asked if I wanted Red, Green, or Christmas my answer was, of Christmas. Being the (at that point) only guests in the dining room, our food was delivered in about 10 minutes. It was hot, fresh, and presented very nicely. And. It. Was. Delicious! Getting my food Christmas meant it came with both red and green salsa (prepared on site). This batch of green was pretttty spicy, but OOOHH so good! Our serve was GREAT. She was spot-on with the drink refills and she (and two other people) stopped by several times to see how things were. You can tell that the staff at Abuelita's loves what they do. It's a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and I'm kinda sad because I know it'll be a while before I can visit again.

A Staple! A place where locals eat! Purely New Mexican... those are all things that come to mind when you are looking for food! Abuelita's is purely Bernalillo and northern New Mexico. It is located in a small, older building and is unassuming! BUT!! The magic and care inside is amazing!! I always have the same thing when I go, which isn't on the menu! It is a bowl of beans, side of green chili, and side of chicharrones, and tortilla!! None of this is store bought this stuff is the real deal made in house! And you can taste the family recipes and love in every bite!! What I do is mix all the stuff together and eat it with tortilla! Their chili is HOT so beware! The staff is amazing! Super nice, super friendly, and they take care of you!! If you are visiting Bernalillo and New Mexico, you gotta go! If you are local, keep going back! You must flock!

We were craving some good Navajo tacos while we were visting and my sister started searching around and we came accross this place. The reviews were good and we decided to give it a shot! We ordered ahead of time before we got there since we were just passing by. Once we got there the lady at the front was so nice and welcoming and answered all our questions! The navajo taco was just was we wanted we ordered a red and green chilie one, we really enjoyed the green chilie more since it was a bit more spicer. The red chilie one did not taste as good, it tasted like red enchilada sauce in my opinion. The meat was well flavored and the toppings were fresh! The beans needed a little bit more salt but we will be back when we come back in to Albuquerque!

The menu initially sounded creative, especially the waffles featuring pepitas, quinoa, and blue corn, which led me to assume that the same thoughtful use of ingredients would carry throughout the rest of the menu. The blue corn enchiladas were the clear highlight and were genuinely delicious. Unfortunately, the red sauce served alongside them tasted noticeably canned. I had hoped for a fresh, house-made sauce that would complement the quality of the enchiladas. The calabacitas were also barely seasoned and could have benefited from much more flavor. The eggs Benedict was disappointing. The addition of a sausage patty made it feel more like a typical American breakfast than the regional and authentic dish I had expected. Many of the available sides were also potato-based, mainly hash browns or French fries, which made the menu feel less varied and imaginative. The blue corn porridge was acceptable, and the generous amount of berries helped bring the dish together, but the porridge itself could have been much more flavorful. There is plenty of potential here, particularly if more attention were given to fresh sauces, seasoning, regional ingredients, and a wider variety of side dishes. The service was good, and the meal overall was fine, but based on my experience, it was not distinctive enough to justify making a special trip.

The red has that deep, earthy flavor with just the right kick, while the green brings a brighter, roasted heat that balances everything out. Together? That classic "Christmas style" combo that hits on every level. The masa was soft and flavorful (not dry like you get at some places), and the filling was generous and well-seasoned. The sides sealed the deal--fluffy Spanish rice, hearty beans, and a fresh, crisp salad that cut through the richness perfectly. Portion size was solid, presentation was clean, and everything tasted like it was made with care--not rushed, not watered down for tourists. Service was quick, friendly, and exactly what you want when you're trying to keep a night moving. Authentic, satisfying, and exactly what you hope for when you come to Santa Fe. We thought we might have got the closing time mixed up so once we found a parking spot, I went over to ask. They said they were moving all of the tables so that they could clean the concrete pathway. We asked if it was OK we sat outside still with our dog and they said that was fine. They moved us to the other side of the pillar which we originally didn't mind but then quickly realized there's no lighting there. So we were eating dinner in a very dim lit area. After reading the reviews, we were excited to try the fish tacos, tamales, and fresh chips and salsa. Unfortunately, none of these really were superstar standouts for us. The blackened fish didn't have a ton of flavor. I found myself searching for a salsa that had a little bit of salt and flavor to spruce up the fish taco. I ate one of the three and my husband ate the remaining. The tamales tasted fresh and the ratio of protein to masa was great. We ate the tamale mostly without the mole sauce, which we didn't really care for. The salsa and chips that came out as an appetizer were fine. The salsas were different and flavorful. I wish that when they dropped off the different salsas (which they do on a rotation) they would have explained what each one was.

I have been coming here for thirty-five years, and it blows my mind that after more than three decades, it keeps reaching new heights while fiercely retaining everything that made it legendary in the first place: the unbeatable high quality, the remarkably affordable prices, and those effortlessly cool, historic vibes. It is a rare, beautiful gem that refuses to compromise its soul, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. This visit was extra special because my fiancé was a first-timer, and he was instantly converted, falling just as madly in love with the magic of this place as I did decades ago. On this particular afternoon, the lines were wrapped around the courtyard and the energy was absolutely electric. It was hella busy, which is a testament to how beloved this institution remains. Rather than waiting for a table, we decided to grab our food to go--a move that turned out to be pure perfection. We took our feast over to the historic plaza square, found a spot to sit, and ate under the shade of the trees while listening to live music drift through the air. With a beautiful, cool mountain breeze rustling through the plaza, it was the most quintessential, magical Santa Fe experience you could ever ask for. As for the food, it remains an absolute revelation. I ordered my enchiladas "Christmas" style, split right down the middle with both their famous, deeply savory red chile and their bright, perfectly spiced green chile. The first bite instantly reminded me why no one else can touch what they do here. The blue corn tortillas were tender, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the chiles carried that robust, earthy, authentic New Mexico heat that warms you from the inside out. It is a flawless execution of culinary tradition. To be able to deliver that level of world-class, scratch-made perfection at a price point that still feels incredibly generous is nothing short of a miracle. Whether you sit in their enchanting, labyrinthine dining rooms or pack it up for a picnic on the square, The Shed is the absolute pinnacle of the Santa Fe spirit.
