This taco shop has become our go-to spot after visiting Mary Birch, and it never disappoints. We've never had a bad meal here! I've tried the Hot Cheeto Burrito and the California Burrito, both of which were delicious. My mom absolutely loved the Tinga, and my husband always orders the T-GUNS--which is absolutely huge! The prices are a little on the higher side, but the quality, generous portions, and consistently great food make it well worth it. Such a bummer! I was excited to order food to-go after a long day. One of the items I ordered was a cup of lentil soup. I was handed my order in a brown paper bag with handles at the top, and took it to my car. Just after I began to drive, it was obvious the lentil soup was leaking all over my passenger seat from the bag. (Keep in mind, the bag was not moving around after being placed on the seat, and I was only a block away from the location just entering the freeway.) I had to wait until I exited the freeway to get out and try to remedy the disaster! As soon as I moved the bag, it ripped from being soaked through, and the test of my items fell out of the open door onto the street. $35+ order and all went to waste! Just because the soup could not be packed properly and had a loose plastic lid. Such a shame that I will NOT be back, and cannot recommend this place to anyone else. read more

Really great food, I ordered the rolled tacos and based on the pictures online I expected something hefty especially when it's 16 dollars for it. Well no, the rolled pencil tacos are hella small, maybe like 4 ounces of beef on top and then lettuce to make it seem like the container is full and obviously I'm Not cheap enough to not tip. So make that 18 even though this is a to go order. What bothered me even more is they offer the salsas which are pretty good, in the .5oz cups which now I have to get like 8 of them to put enough salsa, what a waste of plastic. This place is too boogie, for my wallet and the host Esme didn't bother to ask if I needed a fork or anything. So I guess I'm grabbing the left over bits by hand at work. Tonight I ordered a Cali burrito and added refried beans, onion, and sliced avocado. It was a fat burrito but was falling apart. They were pretty stingy with the toppings in it. Decent quality food and good customer service at this Lupe's. My only complaint is that the portions are not balanced and consistent, and because of that, the price is not always worth it. For example, I've ordered the spicy shrimp burrito a couple of times and have only gotten 3, maybe 4 pieces of shrimp, and the majority of the burrito was cabbage. Came here for lunch & the gal behind the counter was exceptional - super friendly & helpful! I got an Al pastor taco & carnitas taco, along w/ a barbacoa style pollo taco to go. While waiting peeked at the adorable restaurant area, separate frm the cashier & the colors are vibrant & sharp; will eat in next time! The tortillas were fresh & held up amazingly! I'd hoped the pastor would have pineapple salsa but didn't; will ask next time. The barbacoa had pickled onions on it that were zippy. My favorite was the carnitas - delicious flavor. One of my go to places for Al pastor. They have great TJ tacos and Cali burritos. The service can be a little slow at times, but I'd rather wait for good food. They recently redecorated the inside and it looks amazing! It's a nice place to go eat with friends and family. read more

For some reason I had really low expectation of this place. Maybe because it's by the college and random corner plaza. I am overly shocked at how good this place was and can't be judgy. When you walk to the back, it's like a club! You got tvs playing sports and another tv playing a deejay spinning music with LED lights along the walls. They have breakfast items until 2pm like chilaquiles, veggie items, kids meal, quesadillas, plates, burritos, combos. California burrito is what I get when it's my first time. I'm blown away at the steak flavor, the soft tortilla, the fries were crispy and not your typical fries. Had guacamole, cheese and sour cream. Not to mention it was a hefty burrito that I only ate half. It came with chips. We also got al pastor taco, beer battered fish and carnitas taco. All delicious. They changed their recipe. I've been coming for years and honestly I'm more and more disappointed. It used to be soooo good and now it's just meh. My biggest disappointment is the micheladas, I was obsessed with them and the last few times I've tried them it's literally just Clamato and beer. The food isn't bad, but it's nothing to rave over. We came here for the burritos, but the Al pastor tacos were the star of the show! My husband is from Nor Cal and likes rice and beans in his burritos. I know, I know. So he has been doing some investigating on taco shops that have whole pinto beans (instead of just refried beans) and found Lupe's. He got a burrito and I got the rolled tacos. We got an order of the Al pastor tacos to split bc we were super hungry and wanted leftovers. The burrito and rolled tacos were good, but the TJ-style Al pastor tacos were AMAZING! We took our food to go, but we will definitely eat here next time because the decor is super cute. The employee who took our order was very kind and helpful. All in all, this is a great shop. Came back to San Diego and hit it 3 more times in one week. I love the protein-style option. I get the octopus taco regular it has crispy cheese and pesto. If you are a pesto and seafood fan you will love it. The fish tacos are grilled which is much better in my opinion as I don't like all the extra breading. If I could give ZERO STARS I would. Not sure what happened to this place because they used to be soooo good! How do you mess up a quesadilla and beef tacos ? The tacos were stale & cold ! The amount of meat they put in the tacos was almost comical ! I took it apart to take a photo because I couldnt believe how little meat they actually put inside! Makes no sense how they feel okay to charge almost $6 a taco for a stale tortilla with mostly lettuce and tomato ! A quesadilla and two tacos came out to $32 ?!?! Literally the worst tacos Ive ever had and this place actually used to be one of my favorites. Really sad to see it go so downhill. Totally ruined my night and appetite.
