The Sisters absolutely love the residents at the nursing home. They treat them with such kindness and the residents always have fun activities to do. If you volunteer there, they offer volunteers an option to buy lunch once a week, and the food is DELICIOUS, especially considering the food the nuns get are usually donations. The sisters have a begging tradition that has spanned over 150 years that they still rely on the Providence of God to provide for their needs. The sisters are so hospitalable with employees, volunteers, visitors and benefactors alike. If you are looking for a place to go for some quiet time, the chapel is glorious and awesome! They usually have daily Mass in the morning, but I would call before arriving since they don't have a live in chaplain and it's visitng priests who say Mass. If you observe the residents and employees, you will hardly ever see a frown. The sisters provide an awesome atmospere; it almost doesn't even feel like a nursing home. Also, they have a really cute gift shop with reasonable gifts, stuff I've seen for more money at retail stores and also they sell baked goods at the front door. I am giving them 5 stars because I love volunteering here!!!

However, I will focus on direct communication between the family and the rehab center. It is hard to get a hold of anyone at times. There was times that I called and the phone rang for 10 minutes straight. Or I asked to speak to the patients nurse... and waited for 10 minutes and transferred then waited and transferred again... to be told by the receptionist to call back. The nurses and CNAS for the most part are kind and caring. I'm very appreciative of them. It's the service and management of the rehab center that's not satisfying I understand and empathize with the busy nurses, however rehab centers are a for profit business. This one in particular is. Customer service in this kind of business, revolves around effective communication with the patients family. Both in the rehab center and on the phone. People work and it's important that they feel informed of their family members well being and progress at all times. I did not feel that way at all. Even at Sunday discharge, the prescriptions weren't given with valid quantities....Which we didn't discover until at home...with less then a days worth of medication left. Something that would have been great if anyone had noticed before discharge... or if we were given the prescriptions to fill ahead of time. Something has got to change with regard to keeping patients families involved and informed.

Huge shout out to all the gals at the front desk - all like family. they take time for every resident that asks for help whether it be with their phone or just wanting to talk. Contrary to some really Negative reviews , this place is clean, organized and very on top of my mom's medicine management and well being.

I have read so many terrible things about how the elderly are treated in these kinds of places and thus I was really worried, especially when I left them there and moved home to California. During the pandemic, and even up until today, Alexian Village has a very high level of staff turnover at all levels, which usually indicates a management issue. However, I don't know the real cause. But as my "parents" have now been there for months, I've noticed that most of the people who serve them seem to be decent people who really care about the elders in their facility. Especially Helen at the front desk, who is a remarkable, wonderful person they are so lucky to have! (Beware of the other front desk woman, though. She seems to hate everyone and everything!) I've also learned that the dire situations my parents report are often not so accurate when I actually investigate what's happening. I am learning to give Alexian Village much more of the benefit of a doubt in these situations. They are, after all, doing a job I was no longer capable of doing myself. The ideal of course in an AL is that your relative is supremely happy, relieved and delighted. That's not likely to happen, no matter how angelic your loved ones are or are not. (That's a new realization for me!) Moving into an AL means that the party is coming to an end, and that's got to be hard for any elder to accept. Now that I have less concern about mistreatment, lack of food, lack of services, mean staff, stolen items, stolen clothing, unavailable healthcare and all the other things mine have complained about, I see that a lot of the drama is really just their unhappiness to be in AL in the first place. I believe Alexian Village is doing the best they can under the difficult circumstances made more difficult by the pandemic. It's irrational to expect this to be easy on your elders or yourself. It just won't be. Breathe. PS - There's one very bad review here, with one star. It talks about how often they change her mom's diaper. I think that poster is messed up, because Alexian V. is an assisted living, not a nursing home. Only nursing homes provide that level of nursing care. She may have posted in the wrong place?
