I've grown up eating their sandwiches since I was in high school. I love how it's a family-run business and supports the athletic teams in its community. This is the place where I learned about dutch-crunch bread....mmm...yeah, it's a bit hard, but it's good (especially if you get the middle slices, not the end pieces of the baguette). Whenever I would head to a 49er game or a picnic, I would come here and get my deli on! They used to be affiliated with other local restaurants and had this discount card where you could buy one sandwich and get the other one for either a discounted price or maybe it was free? A neighborhood gem! I was surprised to see a handful of negative reviews about this place. I live right around the corner and probably stop in once every couple weeks. I really enjoy the coziness of the place. There are a few couches and comfy seats you can unwind in plus some more traditional restaurant tables. Generally fairly quiet so I like coming to unwind or share a glass of wine with some food with my girlfriend. I would say this place really does well for sharing plates. They do have some main dishes, but my favorites are from the appetizer menu. Grab a bunch and enjoy with friends or gorge yourself... I have certainly done both! Nice big screen TV to catch a game, but not to the point of being disruptive to the rest of the place. So the main lady and gentleman who run this place are wonderful, warm, and friendly. I would come back for the service. I got a veggie burrito and it was substantial!! Stuffed with veggies, rice, and black beans. I tend to like salt more than most people, so it was lacking in salt a bit. It doesn't come with any chips or sides but they have TONS of option to purchase if you want. Credit card minimum is $5 (FYI). So, as I am sitting here and the "service crew" member is sweeping the floor with the broom. He finishes the floor...then uses the SAME BROOM to sweep the table tops. About 10-15 minutes later he came back to wipe the table tops with cloth and spray. I mean, couldn't he wait to get the crumbs with the cloth rather than a 3-foot long broom..? read more

I like this place. As a mom in the neighborhood, it's great both for lunch and for the occasional relaxing evening out with my little guy. For lunch, the deli sandwiches are great, and I find the owner charming if quirky (He once offered me free lunch if I sang a love song to the guy in front of me in line. I think he was a little surprised to have to pay up!) In the evenings, the serving staff is very patient with my 2-year-old and always brings him little items to play with. This place is awesome! I've been going here irregularly for about 5 years now, and seen it change from an old school deli to more modern, but main deli sandwiches have held true to form. I wouldn't mess around with the Mexican menu, because what they do best is sandwiches. My personal favorite is a club on sourdough roll. They nail it everytime. The sourdough roll is sour and slightly crunchy, and it's a pretty nice size too. It's great. I've gotten a slew of other sandwiches (the Degelman comes to mind), but everyone has their favorite, and they do a good job with most. The deli sides the offer aren't all that spectacular, but it's the sandwiches you come for, so get one of those and a bag of chips. You can't go wrong. read more

I worked here for three years in high school. My suggestion is to stay away. The food prep is done by untrained employees, and the area to prep food were given a once over with a rag for cleaning. After my expiriences there I will never eat at Lutticken's again. Bob Lutticken's treatment of employees is terrible. He uses high school kids and pays them in cash way below minimum wage. I was told when I started that the tax savings would make up for it being below minimum wage, which was completely untrue. He also steals all the credit card tips for himself. Employees (at least the day workers) never see any of the credit card tips. Stay away. The place is dirty and disgusting, but not as much as Bob. read more

Friendly service in a no-frills deli with good sandwiches! This place has been around for a long while, and my co-workers have mentioned it on occasion. I was feeling in the mood for a sandwich, and Lutticken's fit the bill. I ordered a pastrami on the highly recommended dutch crunch, topped with provolone. A good sandwich for sure; very fresh tasting. They have a burrito bar as well, but I don't know if it's any good or not. And I heard that back in the day you could sing for your lunch. After spending the morning at Ikea's in East Palo Alto we decided to head for lunch. We thought of going to Nini's Coffee Shop in San Mateo or at Lutticken's Deli and decided on the deli as it was on our way to Hwy 280. Parking was easy as we arrived after 1 PM and parked in front. We ordered a pastrami sandwich on rye and a chicken taco salad. Both we around $7-$8. You order at the counter and then take your food to your table. The tables were clean. They were served on paper plates and we had plastic utensils. Plenty of paper napkins were on the table. The deli did not have any tabasco or hot sauce for the salad, but instead gave us some Sriricha. The food was rather ordinary and had not much flavor. Somehow the pastrami was cold. Overall this was a so-so deli and we are not likely to return. read more

I worked in Menlo Park for four years and never even knew this place existed. I can't believe I did that horrible commute up 101 every day and was never rewarded with a sandwich from Lutticken's. Actually I still haven't been rewarded with a sandwich but I did manage to consume a fair amount of Flying Dog's "Snake Dog IPA" on Saturday night. A friend of ours and the bluegrass band he's in were playing at Lutticken's After 5 and we had a blast. It was a bit weird at first, sitting there on the Alameda while cars whizzed by and bluegrass filled the air. Truth be known, you're actually sitting in the parking lot. But that's OK because the staff there is wonderful and instantly make you feel at home. Beer prices are also great, only $4.00 for the best IPA known to man. And it was served in a frosted glass. Wine prices seemed a little on the steep side but hey, this is Menlo Park after all. Lutticken's is definitely a place I'll revisit and hopefully actually eat something. Only one complaint which was amplified by the fact that I was drinking beer. It's a LONG way to the bathroom. Hmm I've never really had a good experience here... The interior is drab, the service is slow, and the food is nothing special. There is usually just one person working and he/she can basically decide whether he/she wants to turn the deep fryer on or not. So you're in the mood for their mozzarella sticks or jalapeno poppers (which are actually amazing)?! Well, too bad, not today. Some people praise their "crunch from the Netherlands" bread (I don't want to contribute to the Review Highlights) but you can find that kind of bread in most local places now. Love this little Palo Alto sandwich shop! Been here a few times now, and everything I've gotten has been really tasty. They also serve been and wine which is always a plus! The service is good, and the people seem really friendly-- as you'd expect from a neighborhood restaurant. The inside is nicely decorated, but get's really bust around lunch time inside, but I believe there are a few tables outside too. Near the Dutch Goose, on Alameda de las Pulgas, a short jaunt away from Sand Hill/Junipero Serra/Alpine Rd area. Absolutely delicious and generous sandwiches. I tried their turkey and avocado, and boy was I excited when they gave me a whole half of an avocado in my sandwich, and pulled out an actual oven-roasted turkey to carve up for my sandwich! Absolutely delicious; in terms of volume of sandwich, think maybe 30% more than what you'd get at Subway, and in terms of quality, think 100% better. For about the same price of $6. Eat here, inside or at the tables outside; just a nice straight up family place for a good lunch. You can also get drinks and sides, though I stuck with water and skipped the french fries/mozzarella stick offerings. Will have to try them next time. read more

Stopped in on a quiet Sunday 12:30 ish. - Good service. Don't feel like the place is clicky There were 3-4 kid working and all were cool. - Both Sandwiches were average. Larger than the chains or grocery deli. - 2 drinks, 2 Sandos & a side for under $25. Bargain - sandwiches were bigger than average and meat was cut to order. UNLIKE Subway or Togos. - Wine prices we're great. Very little markup. - same for beer and non alcoholic drinks. - menu is extensive - the vibe of the place was great. Nice seating areas to watch the local sports teams. Nice bar area. - really not sure why so many are so put off by the place. We enjoyed it. - definitely a locals place. If the Goose NextDoor is sold out, the place absorbs overflow. - seemed kid friendly. - Food wasn't mind blowing but we will return. Boy, people love this place and I just don't see why. It's a midwest deli in Menlo Park and kinda has a 1950's throwback feeling. I really think it's the ambiance that people love. I personally don't love it. I find the kids making sandwiches to be a bit snooty and self-absorbed. I guess if I wanted to live in the midwest, I'd move there. The ingredients aren't that great... the same loafs of meat that most low/mid end delis have. They do cut the loafs fresh on-the-spot, which in an era of Subways, I guess can seem like a novelty. You learn. That's what life is about. Sometimes, at some places, you've got to experience the weak and the strong together until you find a combo that just works at the place. It took me a while going to Lutticken's to find that the Turkey with bacon, lettuce and mayo was the best sandwich they had. I failed with about a hald dozen other combos until I made it there. The prices are rough. I'm not sure even the generous portions they put up are worth the price. I like going there, though I avoid the rush times because the crowds are afwul and the movement is slow. At the restaurant in Redwood City, during my morning coffee I noticed a new sign that said happy hour 4 to 6. I asked an employee if this was new, and it wasn't. I invited a friend who looked up the establishment (Main & Elm) for the appetizer list. Once we got there at 4:30 a small sign proclaiming a "private" event was scheduled. Apart from some construction chaos going on to improve the exterior, the atmosphere inside was pleasant, the service neither slow or fast. A few grumpy patrons jockeying for position in line, but it moved along fine for a late lunch. Employees seemed uninterested in acknowledging my arrival for a surprisingly long time. Burrito was a 4/10 in terms of flavor. Came back some weeks later with my spouse because this place is so convenient. Got a sandwich, which was better than the burrito; service was also better. Three stars becuase the sandwiches are generous, they have a big selection of sandwich contents, and they have a great drink selection including beer and wine. They also have a super selection of chips. Supposedly if you sing a song for the restaurant, lunch is on them. The staff at this restaurant is really moody. Sometimes they are kind of cheery, but most of the time I find them super grumpy and unattentive. My biggest complaint is that they make the messiest, sloppiest sandwiches on the planet. No sandwich artistry to be found here. To be fair, it seems to be quite popular with big eaters (mostly construction guys) probably because of the good value. This place is grimey! Good food but there's a very snobby rude old lady which makes ordering a very difficult and painful ordeal. The deli is known for their Dutch crunch bread but they always run out, you'd think if that's what their known for they might want to make enough for the day.
