While her office is clean and I am always whisked immediately into the dental chair, I should have taken note of how empty the office was. No one else is ever there. I was recommended Lydia Wong by a co-worker of mine who seemed to have an absolutely wonderful experience with her. Sucks for me. I will not be going back. My first problem was her receptionist. She called me repeatedly to get my insurance information...but she kept calling me while I was SLAMMED at work and I couldn't get back to her. She has a thick accent and is hard to understand, to boot. I went to Dr. Wong as my first dental experience in five years. My ultimate complaint is that it's really confusing for me to be there...she's hard to understand and she just DOES things without consulting you. She found five cavities and told me I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed IMMEDIATELY. Hold up, lady. I'm 22. I don't have unlimited funding. I agreed to get the fillings done in increments that could be reasonable with my pocketbook. I got the first two done a few weeks ago. The estimate was $197 (for me, after insurance paid some). I ended up being billed $275. I have three other cavities to do, but I won't be getting them done with Dr. Wong because the bill difference is INSANE. Another negative: I needed to be numbed THREE TIMES before she could work on me. The first time didn't work at all. The second time was brief and she started to drill, then I realized that I could FEEL it. She stopped immediately and numbed me, again. I (sadly) referred coworkers to her after my first visit went oh-so-smoothly (it was just a cleaning). A coworker of mine that got fillings with her has told me that three weeks has passed and his teeth still hurt. And these are the fillings he got that weren't set right the first time...he had to go back to her office the day after and get them fixed. That's not good. All of that being said - she is very nice. She smiles and chitchats and tries to make things comfortable for you. She gave me a Starbuck's gift card for $10 as a thank-you for a few referrals that went to her. And another thing: she only does porcelin fillings. Most insurance doesn't cover that, and unless you bring that up...well, she won't. I'll be seeking a different dentist. Writing my review now while it is fresh in my mind. I purchased a Groupon after cross-checking it with Yelp to see what other people's experiences have been. Additionally I did a lot of research into ZOOM Whitening and felt prepared for however it would go, even quite painful since I tend towards very sensitive teeth. Yana (I believe she was the hygienist) did the procedure. I opted for local anesthesia because I don't have an issue with shots/needles but I was scared of the shooting pains I had read about and didn't want to stop halfway into the procedure. The anesthesia was a mere $20 add on fee, and was VERY worth it to me. Dr. Wong did the 4 shots while Yana held my hand, which is so freaking sweet, and it actually did help to give a little squeeze over the very minor discomfort. Yana was VERY thorough with her explanation of what she was doing, what would be happening during and after. I started with the whitest shade on the natural spectrum (yay for good oral care payoffs) and she was clear that I may only go up one shade (on the "unnatural" scale which is only 3 shades). She applied the protection precautions for my gums (and showed me since that was a concern of mine) brushed on the bleach solution, and put the light up The 15 min intervals went by in a snap, and I was even able to text/email etc on my phone during. I felt nothing more than maybe the feeling of a cold finger touching my teeth, no pain. In the end I went up 2 shades, 1 away from the whitest possible, and I am happy with the results. She gave me great post-procedure advice, and 8 hrs later, with the anesthesia totally worn off, I feel only minor sensivity. A few people have noticed the whitening, and I have already recommended it to friends. Definitely brightens up dingy teeth and makes a noticeable difference :) read more

No pain, no gain. This is absolutely true with the Zoom! whitening experience. One thing I appreciated were the clear and fair warnings before the process began. I was given options for anesthetic shots or ibuprofen. I'm not too fond of taking meds, so I figure I'd suck it up and take whatever pain came during/after the procedure. There are 3 intervals where the dentist applied/reapplied the whitening solution. First 2 were great...easy and painless. The 3rd session was pretty crazy. I could feel the nerves in my teeth reacting - a shooting pain that shot from my teeth to my brain. But, I expected this so no probs. Overall, great service and a great practice going on here. Very clean and welcoming office - convenient location from the Financial District. I have to say again that I really appreciated the no-BS info that was given to me. Everything that the dentist said was true and not exaggerated at all. Professional service all around...also, after everything was done, I could just walk out - simple and fast, which was great because I had to get back to the office. I bought a teeth-whitening deal from LivingSocial. Dr. Wong was very honest with me about the results of the whitening, because I have some composite material on the top of my canines, she said those will remain the same shade while the rest of my teeth will be a lot whiter. I did not want that effect. She also told me that my teeth were already white and that the treatment would only get my teeth to two shades lighter. She also pointed out how much calculus was embedded in my gum lines. Impossible right? I had just had a cleaning abut 3 months ago, well it turns out that my other dental office did a "lazy a$$" job. Seeing as how I would benefit more from a thorough cleaning, we exchanged services. After the cleaning, she gave me plenty of helpful tips on proper cleaning and brushing techniques. I appreciate how she spent plenty of time educating me instead of rushing me out of the door. She also gave me some Zoom Whitening Pens to take home. I went to Lydia's office, Bonita Dental, for Zoom Whitening that I got a Living Social coupon for. They did a great job. Since I have sensitive teeth they used Novocaine on my whole mouth to make it easier. It was painless, took only an hour, and Dr. Wong and her Hygienist were both very friendly, relaxed, and helpful. Very professional quality service. My teeth are very sensitive afterward, which is normal. I'm reducing sensitivity with high strength fluoride I got from a past dentist and it is helping. Don't forget that you can ask for fluoride from your dentist to use at home after you get Zoom or other whitening that causes sensitivity. I'm also finding Sensodyne toothpaste helpful. They did a great job of telling me how to maintain long-lasting results by following up with home treatments and avoiding certain foods for a few days after whitening. My teeth were whitened about 5 shades and are now brilliantly white. Love it! read more

Had a Zoom whitening here and it was a great experience. Lovely staff and nice offices. I had a deal and it was worth every penny. My teeth got 8 shades whiter. No joke, I was off the chart and only one off from the whitest fake white you can get. We're talking Simon Cowell white. I've had professional whitening before so I knew what to expect. I'd never had any pain or sensitivity before so I skipped the numbing treatment. The woman who did the treatment gave me some fantastic advice (that I'd never heard before) for keeping my teeth white despite my love for coffee, tea, red wine and hawaiian punch. I had a few moments of shooting pain over the 3-4 hours afterwards, but nothing major. Kind of felt like an ice cream headache for a sec. and probably my own fault for drinking a cold soda straight afterwards. Lydia Wong is a lifesaver! 2 years ago, A big piece of my front tooth broke off while I was eating an apple. It literally flipped out of my mouth and landed on my computer keyboard! I was horrified. I panicked and ran to the mirror. There was a big ugly hole in my front tooth! This front tooth had already started turning slightly grey after a root canal I had suffered through 3 years earlier with a previous dentist. Now the tooth was breaking apart and I didn't know what to do! It looked terrible! I put the piece of tooth into a shot glass filled with water and went to work with it. I walked around work feeling embarrassed, self-conscious and unhappy. I covered up my mouth with my hand whenever I smiled or spoke to anyone in an effort to hide my broken tooth. I did a search for cosmetic dentists that could help fix my front tooth and made a few phone calls. Every doctor was unavailable that day except for one. Lydia Wong. She was willing to stay late in her office to see me directly after work and to fix my tooth. Thankfully she is located in a convenient spot close to the Financial District. It was walking distance from my job. She was warm and kind from the first moment I met her. I could tell she genuinely cared and she took the time to listen to my concerns. I was pretty distraught that day and nearly in tears.I must have seemed like a complete basket case with my jagged broken tooth and shot glass. I was just imagining the worst and thought this was going to be a thousand dollar procedure. It was a bizarre situation in the first place, who loses a chunk of their tooth while eating an apple? She was sympathetic to my situation and took the shot glass with my tooth piece with a gentle smile. She took an X-ray that revealed a bunch of hairline fractures on both my front teeth. That's why my tooth had broken. Within 15 minutes, She had re-attached the piece of tooth as though it were a puzzle piece. She smoothed it over and actually fixed the shape of my tooth! I was amazed at the fact that not only could you not see that my tooth had ever been chipped but she actually made my tooth look better. I expected an immense bill, but it only cost about 35$ with my insurance. I can't describe my relief. She warned me that my front tooth would become more grey and fragile over time. She told me that I would probably need a crown eventually. She was right. She fit me for a crown the following year and even bleached my teeth for a great price so that all my teeth would be whiter. This way I could get a brighter crown to match my new pretty color. The crown fit perfectly, she shaved it into just the right shape and the color match was exact! You can't even tell I have a crown. She's not only a great dentist but a nice person too. Over the years, I've shared vacation pictures with her and stories from my life. I genuinely enjoy my visits to the dentist now and I know that if I run into any cosmetic problems in the future she will be available to help me. I now have a new crown, white, strong teeth and a beautiful smile. Thanks to Lydia Wong. I look at old pictures of my teeth and I'm amazed at the work she has done. I'm also grateful for all the time and care she put in. She did it all in a way that was very affordable for me and didn't break the bank at all. I definitely recommend her, especially for crowns, deep cleaning and cosmetic work. She is precise and efficient. She takes the time to make sure it comes out right. I was really struggling between four and three stars for this, but, the fact is, I just didn't think the dentist (Dr. Wong) did a very thorough job with my cleaning. I bought the amazon local deal for the tooth whitening, and the lady who did that was wonderful, and I was very pleased with her attention to detail and thoroughness in explaining the process and likely results. However, my tooth cleaning by the dentist was by far the quickest and least meticulous cleaning I've ever had. When I asked why it was over so quickly, she just responded that I didn't have any calcification (but I never have...), she didn't do any flossing or any cleaning between my teeth, so I think I'm going to have to go back now and pay out of pocket (since only one cleaning is covered by my insurance) to get my teeth actually clean. read more

I thought I'd give an update now that I've been seeing Dr. Wong for two years. I'm still so pleased to have her as my dentist. I like having a dentist who does all the cleaning, from the plaque picking to the fluoride wheely thing. I've been to dentist offices where the dentist superficially picks at my teeth for a few minutes and then hands me off to an assistant who sloppily finishes the job. Dr. Wong always does a thorough and detailed job. Also, I've had numerous mouth guards molded from different dentists in the past. Dr. Wong recommended a mouth guard that molds to the roof of my mouth, rather than molding around the whole top row of my teeth. Like most people that wrote a review, I purchased a Groupon for Zoom whitening. I followed the recommendation of brushing with Sensodyne for the month leading up to the treatment and the process ended up being painless for me. I don't think I got any anesthesia; at least I don't remember paying for it. At the end of the treatment, Dr. Wong showed me that my teeth were two (or three?) shades whiter. It is pretty subtle; don't expect Ross Gellar white teeth. She told me I could go whiter if I followed up with home treatments so I've been doing that. I don't really have a frame of reference at this point, but the home treatment does seem to have worked. I've made Dr. Wong my regular dentist because I liked her so much. She's much more communicative than my last dentist, explaining what she's doing and what I need to do. In these days of Groupons and freebies, businesses lose money on these deals to bring you through the door. Therefore you can almost always expect an upsell. Dr. Wong didn't try to upsell me on anything, not on the whitening nor after my first teeth cleaning with her. read more

Went to Bonita Dental / Dr. Wong for a teeth whitening today. Nice people but A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME. My teeth are maybe barely whiter, but you have to use your imagination. They hurt. The stains on my teeth that I had hoped to remove are still there. Only after the hour of bleaching Dr. Wong tells me that teeth whitening doesn't remove stains and that I should buy rembrant toothpaste. She tells me I have to only eat white foods for two days. She tells me I have bad dental hygiene even though I brush with a Sonicare two times a day and floss daily. And ow my teeth seriously hurt. read more

Having read some reviews about the treatment, I was wary about getting the pain some described so I took 2 Advil before going in. Yena, the hygienist was very nice and professional. She asked me to fill out some forms then asked me a few questions before going in the room. She set up everything and let me know the procedures. The whole process took about an hour. I was surprised that I didn't feel any discomfort during the whole treatment. My original teeth were on the whiter side, so I was told that the result might not be too much of a difference. It came out roughly 3 shades whiter, not the whitest but I'm satisfied. On the day around noon after lunch I started to feel some shooting pain in teeth. They were patient and professional and told me everything they were going to do before they did, which I really, really appreciate in a dentist. There were three 15 minute exposures in a row. I actually fell asleep during part off it. They were also very gentle and concerned that I might experience sensitivity to the treatment, which I guess is common, but it's been 12 hours and I have very little discomfort. Needless to say all the good reviews were true. She thoroughly explained everything from start thru what can be expected post whitening. Having sensitive teeth & gums, I opted to get some anesthesia for an extra minimal fee. It was well worth it, cause it made the process much faster & pain free! She was very pleasant & gentle. She even conveniently called my preferred pharmacist for pain meds just in case I needed them later on. Of course one's pain tolerance after the anesthesia subsides varies from person to person. This is very professional, thorough, educative, warm and friendly dental clinic. I had 2-3 calls prior to the appointment day to tell me about parking options/BART options as well as taking a brief history (expanded upon arrival) and recommendations for preparing for the 90-minute teeth-whitening procedure. I had a Russian+English-speaking clinician (I'm sorry, her name escapes me right now) who could not have been a more effective combination of knowledge, professionalism, competence, experience, good cheer, warmth & friendliness. She went out of her way to inform me what to expect at each stage concisely and clearly. This meant that there were no surprises. She was attentive to possible bathroom and pain-killer needs (neither were needed by me but I appreciated her being so proactive. I was 30 mins late (yes, parking is no better than in Hong Kong or Manhattan) - the walk from BART was too far for me with my present knee injury and she kindly suggested moving my appt from 12 noon to 10am to increase the chances of finding a space in a nearby parking lot. She was very gracious about my tardiness and showed irritation (I would have been mad as hell at a new & unknown customer wasting so much of my professional time!). Her office is right around the corner from mine so it's very convenient to hop over there during my lunch hour. She has a gentle touch with the teeth cleaning and she is very personable. I've had 2 fillings so far and i'm still waiting for the sensitivity to wear off. There are several things that make Lydia's practice exceptional. 1.) she takes pictures of everything she does and documents the dental work as she does it. 2.) She does her own work including teeth cleaning 3.) She has excellent equipment and pain care system. I had several problematic areas which she fixed. She also pointed out poor work that my prevous dentists had done and work that was billed to insurance, but not performed!. As a patient, it is very difficult to tell immediately whether you're receiving good dental care or not. Over the last 2 years, my confidence has grown considerably in Dr. Wong's work and the folks in the practice. read more
