I always like to support our local downtown Brighton businesses, however, today was my last visit to Lynn's. Tim was not only a slow, inattentive waiter/owner but he was downright rude. I review dining on the following points: appropriate ambiance, service, food choice, food quality, an appropriate menu for the price, and when there is one less category to rate than the others are weighed heavier. In this case, the restaurant lacked 2 of these and I am being kind. Ambience: Every seat ripped and duct taped and the only new/wear-free table wasn't seated while we were there. The interior did not meet the quality of the exterior. Food choices were diverse and the food seemed reasonably fresh and fairly good for the prices. The menu was appropriate for the diner-style restaurant that goes back over two decades. Service could be better. It appeared the server was assigned the restaurant and everyone backed her. It wasn't great. I was disappointed in the simple morning breakfast establishment that apparently became too big for its britches. read more

My wife and I went to Lynn's Cafe on a Tuesday evening. There was only one other group outside on the patio and we decided to dine inside. The waitress was prompt, friendly and helpful. I ended up getting their Chicken Strips and Chips which also comes with a dinner roll and coleslaw. They were probably some of the best chicken strips I have ever had. Long and thin and extremely crispy. The fries and coleslaw were so-so. My wife got the Hobo's Special which was basically hashbrowns with egg and green pepper on top I believe. She said it was "delicious". While waiting for our meal we noticed a menu board that listed hushpuppies for $1.99. We promptly placed an order for those as well and they were great. The waitress suggested we get them with butter which was an excellent recommendation. The prices were quite reasonable. I think for both our dinner, two drinks and the hushpuppies it was under $20. Lynn's is a great little breakfast place with a small town feel. Although they're known for breakfast, they also serve up Scotty Simpson's famous fish 'n chips. Greasy, way beyond what you expect with fried food. The fish batter was dark on the outside, shimmering with grease, and yet raw inside. The fish was just cooked, which normally I'd applaud, but with my grease bath it was a bit nauseating. Shrimp were the same only the batter was spongy. Coleslaw was fresh but a little plain, after adding some salt it was edible but nothing special. Roll was soft and fresh, cold. Server was young and sweet, but difficult to understand. She sort of mumbled/slurred, but she wasn't surly like many teenagers and she got the order right, checked back with the right amount of frequency. If it wasn't for her, I'd have rated 1 star. It was also expensive. $42 for two fish & shrimp dinners and cokes. Most of it went back uneaten. Maybe things have changed, but I won't go again. Lynn's Cafe is a nice little place set off of Main Street a couple of blocks west of Grand River. Seating is also available outside on a good sized patio away from traffic. This review is only for the Scotty Simpsons fish and chips which is served at Lynn's. Pros: beer and wine available here and not at Detroit location. Tonight they had Oberon on tap as one of the selections. Fish and cole slaw are same as Detroit location. Also have other items on menu that you would expect to find in a cafe like salads, burgers and such. Service was very good. Waitress was outgoing and even willing to try a shot of Ginger Beer as she did not know what it tasted like. Location of Lynn's is also in much nicer area. Cons: Fries and rolls are very ordinary and no where near as good as Detroit location. The biggest reason this is not a 3 star is because I was weaned on Scotty's in Detroit and am used to all 4 parts of the meal being like the original. You will have to give them both a try to see for yourself. I doubt I will try this location again but will be back to this part of Brighton to sample some of the other restaurants in the area. read more

Stopped by here for breakfast since my usual go-to breakfast place stops serving at 11am (PS: this is a horrible practice). Since the Brighton Farmer's Market was going on, I figured I'd people watch, grab some breakfast, then go shopping at the market. The atmosphere of the place is a semi industrial-ish with the concrete floors. the tables and chairs are on the cheaper end, though. It didn't really turn me off or anything. What was irritating was there was a sign saying, "Please wait to be seated" and after 2-3 minutes, no one even looked in my direction. I finally approached a waitress who was bussing a table and asked where I should sit. I was finally seated then. My waitress was cheerful and pleasant. I had to laugh when she overfilled my coffee and she ran around acting like it was a criminal activity. It was spilled coffee, it didn't get on my food or me, so it's not a big deal. The menu is full of nice breakfast creations. There are about 3-4 different kinds of eggs benedict, too. I settled on the eggs argyle which is eggs over smoked salmon, over a grilled tomato, over an english muffin. It was topped with hollandaise. They were a bit skimpy on the hollandaise, but the dish was really good and they were pretty generous with the salmon (which is likely the most expensive bit). However, the real TRAVESTY were the potatoes. They offer two types: the american fries, or the hash browns. I asked my waitress which was better and she steered me towards the american fries, which was supposed to be a baked potato diced up and crisped on the flat top. Whomever cooked these fries must've had a personal vendetta against potatoes; these were crunchy, dry, and pretty inedible. Even after a cursory dousing in hot sauce, salt, pepper, whatever extra hollandaise I had... they were still awful and inedible. I kept trying to find a piece which wasn't cooked to death and was fruitless. The service is spotty, some aspects of the food are good, and the menu is diverse and willing to serve breakfast past whatever arbitrary cut-off time other places has. I'd go back to give it another chance. When I do, I'll update you. read more

Went here with my wife and son today, it was great. They have all of the traditional breakfast items as well as a few different types of eggs Benedict and some extra thick French toast. They also have a Captain Crunch French toast that I need to try next time. So the menu was diverse, the service was great, and the atmosphere was laid back and clean. I need to remember to go here more often because there are a lot of menu items I need to try. read more

But I've tried to come back two times in the past two days and they have been closed before 1 o'clock I wouldn't be so upset if they had their appropriate hours posted on line or even on their door. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Did I say everything about this dive was terrible? It was. We decided to give it a try, even after changing seats, as the duct tape was sticking to my pants. Awful coleslaw, cheap old bun, the tartar sauce was just mayonnaise, the fish was greasy, cold, and overcooked, slimy, gross. The fries were greasy, old grease, nasty. We left quickly, after beginning to feel ill, just sampling a bite. The lady gave us 10% off, as we had only eaten the stale bun for sustenance, I would say, we were not only 10% unsatisfied, we were about 100% horrified. Good luck to those trying this back woods cookery, and to those loyal local diners, do enjoy, no offence intended. We did have to take some indigestion medication, and later had a fillet of fish at McD,s which was delicious. read more

This place is a little hidden treasure. They have a small diner menu and prices you can't argue with. During Saturday and Sunday mornings you may have a bit of the weekend breakfast rush (there isn't a ton of seating) but any other time during the week there is no problem grabbing a seat. Their breakfast selection is very good with a few unique options. The baked oatmeal is so good and warms you from the inside out on a cool day. Prices are decent as well. It was almost very good. Sunday morning, 10 a.m. We had oatmeal - one classic, one baked. Very good. The table next to us had a problem and one of their meals was replaced. However, the coffee was so weak it barely had the strength to make it to the table. I don't want Starbuck's/Panera strength. I just like some coffee flavor. The waitress said they grind it fresh and the amount added is automatic. They need to re-calibrate the machine or add some beans. The refill was a little stronger. The service is attentive to the point of annoying. Back off a little, kids, you're trying too hard. If I want more coffee I'll let you know or you'll see my cup is empty. We couldn't have a conversation without refill question interruptions. Chair was ripped and I couldn't slide it up to the table because the chair/floor friction was so great. Had a wonderful late breakfast there after a quick court date across the street. Arguably it's best point is the location so that you can walk out of the Brighton District Court and across a short street into a clean quaint cafe. The atmosphere is bright and airy. The food tasty and affordable. I had a glass of fresh brewed ice tea, yes the real stuff. Then tried their special the chili cheese omelette with fresh tomatoes, country fries and rye toast. The chili was also homemade and not too spicy and was perfect in this omelette. It really could have used a tad more cheese but still tasty all in all. Toast was buttered and done perfectly, not all dried out and the country fries just as you would expect. I was hungry not having been able to catch a meal before hand and so I was delighted that the portion size was decent as well as satisfying. The service was friendly and well done. I will go back again and I would recommend it to friends. One of Brighton's lesser known undiscovered gems. It's definitely not a chain style restaurant and I'm glad to have found it . read more
