It's restaurant week, so when I saw this spot did the banana leaf for their restaurant week menu I had to check it out! (Despite that, we opted out of their restaurant week menu and ended up just doing their normal tasting menu for $68/pp. It seemed like the regular tasting menu had a better selection of food. Came here for dinner and the food was great. We ordered the butterfish, chirashi, and another appetizer not pictured. Everything was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and my favorite dish was the butterfish. However, I will say that the portion sizes were rather small. Luckily my group ate some food beforehand, but if you're coming here to be full, you'll end up spending a good amount. Restaurant Week 2025- Review 4/many. What is this? Food for ants? All terrible references aside, I went to this well designed French Indonesian place a while ago for Restaurant Week. (which I will be shortening to RW from now on) which was $60 for dinner. In general, I had heard that the food here was good but the portion sizes were rather tiny and was half expecting to have to eat again as it was RW and this was indeed the case. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The waitress was friendly though it seemed like things were a bit rushed but this was probably because the place was pretty crowded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their RW is a bit different than other places as it is apparently a fun call back to old a la carte dishes they used to served here. Two of us went with the Ma-Dé Chirashi with yellowtail, trout, and buttery potatoes. Outside of the listed fish, there was also some ikura in there which added nice extra pops of saltiness along with some microgreens. The dish was interesting as the sauce was warm while the fish was cold and in my opinion, it worked. Said sauce on the bottom of the dish had a unique sourness which paired with the fish almost like a ceviche though I wouldn't have minded some citrus. The portion was tiny with the cuts of fish being high quality though there was a lot of potato. This was good but tiny as said. Another person got the Chèvre Chaud with goat cheese, Asian pear, and lettuce which was a larger portion with a nice sized piece of goat cheese which had a black sesame crust which was a fun touch. The cheese was nice and the little sweet crunch from the pair was a fun spin. Two others had the Jonah Crab with avocado and basil dressing which they liked. My main dish along with a bunch of others was the Slow Cooked Butterfish with miso, cipollini onions, and crispy leeks which I presume is their fun spin on miso cod. From what I can tell from old photos, the dish was half the portion size from the original menu which was already not the biggest portion so it was a very tiny fillet. My favorite part of the dish was the miso which had a nice sweet ferment flavor almost more similar to a red miso even though the color was orange. The onions were well roasted and the bit of leeks on the plate were nice. This was good (again) but tiny (again.) Another person paid $12 extra for the Beef Miyazaki with pickled Tokyo turnip and yuzu soy which was poured at the table. The beef quality was very high as expected for high quality wagyu while the sauce had a mild sourness which was nice and paired with the fattier meat. It wasn't the biggest portion but as this type of beef is very filling, it would honestly be more worth it for the price point. The last person had the Warm Wild Mushrooms with parmesan, pine nuts, and sansho pepper which they enjoyed and the portion seemed decent. All 6 of us went with the Banana Toffee with Crème fraîche ice cream for dessert as the other option seemed pretty generic (chocolate mousse with strawberries.) The banana flavor was nice but I preferred the dessert pretty heavily at their sister spot Wayan as the ube there among others adds some extra nice flavors. It was decent but tiny with some sourness and sweetness but was the weakest course overall. It is a bit hard to rate this place. The flavors overall were good but paying $60 (without tax or tip) and then having to eat again means it wasn't exactly worth it. I prefer Wayan pretty heavily but I would recommend giving it a try at least if you don't care about your wallet. read more

Friendly service and good food in a cozy little restaurant. The lamb ribs were very nicely charred and well seasoned. The crudo and sashimi were fresh and light. Lobster ravioli were our favorite, each one was a couple bites of intense lobster flavor and tender meat. The butterfish was good but not memorable and bit oily. The pandan crepe had good flavor but was a bit too artificial green and also thick for a crepe. They gave us a free scoop of sorbet for a birthday which was really sweet! First time trying Indonesian food and I cannot lie, I was very impressed. I took one bite and Indonesia was IMMEDIATELY bumped up the list in my dream food destinations.   We visited with the intention of partaking in their restaurant week dinner menu, but with the tasting menu only being $8 more with a wider variety of dishes, we opted for that. $68 is a steal for 10 dishes and 3 desserts. I particularly wanted to shoutout their fried eggplant, roasted cauliflower (what a to die for sauce), butterfish (so cheesy) and their lamb ribs (fall off the bone deliciousness). Their coffee ice cream as well was well fought over on the table.   I absolutely enjoyed this introduction to Indonesian food. I'll definitely be on the lookout for more spots like this, but also back for round two of the tasting menu. It is 100% worth every dollar. read more

The crab dip is delicious and I like how they give you both lettuce and crispy crackers as a vessel for the dip, which was topped with a runny egg. The dumpling tower was also fun for all my people who love variety. It comes with 3 different dumpling dishes (a shrimp-foam toast, a peppery honeynut squash one, and lobster one). The lobster was definitely my favorite, but they were all creative and good in their own ways. We also enjoyed the Golden French Toast ($20) and Fried Chicken & Ube Waffles ($25). The golden French toast is so unique as it's a savory twist on this classic. It comes as a cube-like toast topped with creme fraise, chives, and trout roe. It's so creamy and luxurious --loved this one. By the time we got our chicken and waffles, we were quite full. The fried chicken was very tender and crispy, although I didn't think the waffle stood out as much. It lacked ube flavor and a bit hard. Overall, love the creativity for these dishes. We're from Texas, where good Indonesian food is hard to come by, so we were excited to visit Ma dé. We started with krupuk (tapioca chips)--crispy, puffy, and drizzled with a tangy, savory sauce. Then came many beautifully plated dishes: avocado jicama salad, roasted squid, romanesco, balado eggs, butterfish bilindango, fluke sashimi, short rib rawon, acar, salem rice, etc. Each dish was flavorful and elegantly presented. The avocado jicama salad was refreshing with a sweet-tangy rujak dressing. The roasted squid had a smoky char, and the egg balado was coated in a rich, spicy sambal sauce with fragrant Thai basil. The butterfish bilindango was flaky and moist, enhanced by a spicy rica-rica sauce with a citrusy zing. The short rib rawon was savory, infused with sambal terasi (fermented shrimp paste). The fluke sashimi, unlike Japanese sashimi, was soaked in sambal hijau, giving it a fresh, zesty heat. Had brunch here and left feeling rather disappointed. First and foremost, we were told the plates are meant for sharing. So how come the portions were so itty bitty ?!? And the dishes fell flat on all fronts aside from appearance. It was very sad to pay $20+ dollars for a rock shrimp omelet and then get something the size of my palm with like a few pieces of shrimp in there. We were basically eating egg with some glaze on top... The fried chicken was crispy but not flavorful and the ube waffles had no inkling of ube aside from being purple. Finally made it to Ma dé and it happened to be restaurant week. $60 pp for a "hidang" which is family style dining with all the food coming out at once. Cool concept, execution is still lacking I think. Huge fan of their sister restaurant, Wayan, so was excited to try this. While we enjoyed our meal, it is no Wayan. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The tasting menu is family style ("hidang") which I think is fine in theory (everything is served at once), but in practice it means it takes a fair amount of time to prepare the food and the tables (which are very small and packed together, I feel like I knew everything about the table next to us) can't handle so much food at once super well.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Ultimately, there are a ton of dishes and we enjoyed some more than others. My favorites were the fluke sashimi, roasted squid, avocado & jícama, and kangkung pleacing. For the proteins we got the spare rib and the butterfish. The butterfish is much more tomato-forward than I was expecting. The suggestion was to eat it in a piece of lettuce, which I do think helped balance out the flavor. But not my favorite fish. The spare rib was superior and this was a pretty standard tear-apart piece of meat. The sauce that it came with I wasn't super blown away by. I do wish we were given a knife to cut it up a bit more than we could with our spoon, though. Overall, this place had some unique dishes (some I enjoyed more than others) and great ambiance. There's nothing I would necessarily come back for or that I crave, but I think it's worth checking out. Ambiance: restaurant is long and narrow, likely not good for larger groups. The decor is great. The staff here was really helpful as we ordered drinks and suggested the Tulum if I wanted a less strong cocktail. The cocktail was very refreshing without tasting too healthy. JOYFUL EXPERIENCE ALERT. Probably closer to 4.5 stars. The style of dining here (at least week nights it seems) is to order a prix fixe menu which comes with about 10 items, one of which is a choice of 4 protein dishes (so if you see that old menu in the photos, know it seems to be gone which was a little safe cause I wanted to try some of it). The food is so yummy and so fun, the staff are kind, and the vibe inside is cozy. I loved how many things we got to try, and the dinnerware is SO cute. The drink I got was delicious and amazingly creamy for how light and fresh it was. The desserts do come with the prix fixe but the serve will kinda make it seem like they don't and ask if you want (additional) desserts, so be aware of that. The food had some good hits and the service was efficient, but the portions were honestly really tiny and we did not enjoy the cocktails at all. We opted for the chef's menu for a table of 4. My favorites were the passionfruit oyster, corn dumplings, butterfish, asparagus, and mushrooms. The other dishes were good as well, but the wagyu was a bit too fatty, the razor clams were a bit too citrusy, the yellowtail did not pair with the shiso leaf, the shrimp brioche and lobster dumpling was on the heavier side, and the dessert was good but nothing spectacular. TLDR: added to my list of recommendations in the city. Me and my friend were in the area and quite starving and stumbled into Ma dé thinking they weren't going to be able to serve us. Fortunately for us, they had just a table for two available! Of what we ordered, my favorites were the oysters and razor clams, lobster dumplings, warm wild mushrooms, and slow cooked butterfish. The ma dé chirashi was interesting, but it was sashimi served over warm potatoes. Not bad, but wasn't what I was expecting and I don't think I'd get it again. Shrimp toast was forgettable to me, but my friend loved it. We got mango pudding for dessert. I thought it was good but I think I'd try something else next time! For cocktails we got the Yuigahama and the Cartagena. I loved the Yuigahama - it had pandan and cacao, two of my favorite cocktail ingredients. Service was super friendly and I loved that our waiter told us how many dishes to order without getting too much, and everything he suggested ended up being our favorites. Loved the fusion concept of the dishes, but execution fell a little short of my expectations (especially since I loved my experience at their sister restaurant, Wayan). My party of 2 was able to get seated on a late weekend night as a walk in. Started off with the crispy artichoke which was served under a bed of salad greens. I liked sauce which included olive, miso, onion, and likely lemon/citrus flavors. The shrimp brioche was one of my favs of the night! The toasted brioche was crunchy without being too hard, and it paired so well with the light, foamy chili curry sauce. I tried to get every last bit of that sauce! The sweet corn dumplings definitely had a prominent corn flavor which I very much enjoyed. I loved how the dumpling skin was cooked very nicely - chewy, not too hard or too thin, and kept the filling intact. The sauce, on the other hand, had a tangy profile that confused me; not sure if it went super well with the corn background. I was super looking forward to the lobster dumplings but unfortunately, the lobster flavors weren't as fresh as I expected. The filling was packed with lobster pieces, but the lobster/seafood taste was only mild. Drinks: They ran out of the peng hu so I got the st. Jean which had a nice sweet, herbal, and vegetative flavors. Overall I felt like flavor combinations were interesting, but didn't really leave a super strong impression besides the shrimp brioche. Moreover, for its price point and the small portion sizes, I would have expected something more impressive? But perhaps it was partly due to the dishes I tried, since my partner said he liked the octopus and razor clams last time he was here. The store itself is pretty aesthetically pleasing with lots of greenery, white walls, and mirrors. It is a more narrow restaurant so the seating in the front is more like bar table/make shift counter space which can be tight and intimate for some folks. Be sure to specify which seating option you'd like on your reservations! For service wise, staff were nice and polite, but pace of food was a little slow and it took forever for our server to get our bill so we ended up asking someone. read more

An inconsistent but overall great experience. I bookmarked Ma-de the moment I read that the Wayan team was opening a new spot. I loved Wayan and I tend to enjoy any kind of unique fusion restaurant, so I was excited to experience the sequel. The service was slow at times (but everyone who worked there was very nice), and the food ranged from great to outstanding, with diverse and sophisticated preparations highlighting seafood and veggies. SoHo has never been known as a mecca for great restaurants but Cedric & Ochi are building a dynasty down here. We came here at 8:30 on a Saturday night. I'm not sure why this surprised me, but the space is tiny. This would explain why getting a reservation here can be challenging. The space is lively and green, with lots of vegetation and beautiful light fixtures. We had reserved counter seating, meaning the surface we'd need to eat on was quite narrow. We asked the hostess if we could switch to a proper table if it became available and she said she'd let us know. In the meantime, she said, the party at our table was just finishing up, so we could plan to start off there. However, for whatever reason, we didn't get to sit down for about 30 minutes. Luckily we were not in a rush. When we finally did sit down, it turned out that a new table towards the back of the space would be opening up, so we didn't spend much time perched up at the counter. Worth the wait, I'd say. To start, we ordered cocktails. The drink list is pretty exciting here, bursting with creativity and ingredients not typically found in cocktails. I first got the Huatulco (mezcal, rhubarbaro, beets, yuzu vinegar, chile puya, lemon oil), an earthy, citrusy, bright, and subtly spicy mezcal drink that unintentionally served as an amuse bouche. Second, I ended up getting the Gibson that's on their drink menu. I typically get classic or dirty martinis but our server said the Gibson was particularly good with the gin that they use here (I had never heard of it before and since forgot the name) so I opted for that. It was wonderfully smooth and paired very nicely with all of the food. Food-wise, it seems pretty hard to go wrong here. I think our ordering strategy was the perfect way to go in hindsight: two raw (seafood) dishes, two veg, two cooked (seafood) dishes. Yes, some of the portions are quite small for the price (I'm looking at you, lobster). If you go in knowing that, perhaps you'll be less miffed by this. I once payed 30 extra dollars to try a lobster dish on a tasting menu in Greece, and the piece of lobster was about the size of a blackberry, so this was generous by comparison. Eats, below: Mushrooms w/ parmesan, pine nuts, sancho pepper: A+ These were an easy sell. Rich and earthy, colorful and well-presented, these are mushrooms done right. Artichokes w/ black olives, basil, lemon: A+ We initially ordered the avocado salad but they mistakenly brought us the artichokes. It was honestly a blessing in disguise, because I was always team artichoke (my husband isn't really a fan). However, this was, as one of the staff described it, an artichoke dish for people who don't like artichokes. Crispy and super flavorful, just perfect execution. Fluke w/ kombu cured, green chili, shiso: A- Delicate and fresh, a solid raw dish, nothing that exciting though. Tuna w/ kewpie mayo, ficelle, spruce: A Our server talked this up and while it wasn't our favorite dish of the night, it was still delicious. I haven't had kewpie mayo -- at least as part of a tuna tartare dish -- before, it added some extra flavor to the dish. Lobster w/ dumplings, caviar sauce, chives: A+ The aforementioned expensive lobster, but it was so, so good. I mean, lobster in caviar sauce, can you get anymore decadent? Maybe sprinkle some truffle on there for good measure? I'm kidding, of course, this was wonderful as is. Octopus w/ sweet peppers, tomato, basil: A+ We initially decided against the octopus because we were recently in Greece and had it probably 10 times while we were there (it does happen to be my favorite food). But when we asked about it, our server explained the preparation including a slow-braising process and it made it sound too go to pass up. I'm glad we went for it, because it was outstanding. It's tough because I came here before and raved about the food, but this time when I came pretty early in the night they were already out of the butterfish and the beef among other things, and those had been my favorites before. We had asked the server for a recommendation and he suggested the mussels, so we ordered that, but by the end of the meal we had been waiting a while for them only to find out he hadn't put in the order for it. The sweet potatoes and octopus were delicious, and the raw fish dishes were prepared well, but the lack of the heartier options, and the fact that the dish we wanted for the bread just didn't get ordered made the meal pretty unbalanced to me. read more

Snagged a 5:15PM dinner reservation for Saturday. From other's reviews, I came in knowing the space was small but was still taken aback - definitely quaint and cozy. After a couple moments of entering, someone checked us in and seated us. The space felt cramped, our seats were a little too close to the party next to us - an awkward and tight squeeze/shuffle when trying to enter and exit the booth seat. We ordered a couple of their popular and highlighted dishes, to which they were brought over from lightest to heaviest: razor clams & oysters, chirashi, lobster dumplings, mussels & garlic bread. Razor Clams & Oysters: Do not pass on this - although $9 per person, it was worth it. Razor clams were cut and presented back on the shell, paired with a tart sauce. The oysters were paired with a different tart, citrus based vinaigrette with passionfruit seeds. The seeds gave a great textural component to the bite. Great start to the meal. Chirashi: Very interesting take on a chirashi bowl/dish. Caviar, salmon roe, uni (to which we might not have had in ours - looking back at it, we don't recall having any), cucumbers, and a medley of raw fish on a bed of creamy, warm, soft bite-sized baby potatoes. Strange combination but well paired and executed. The sauce was bright and creamy, with a hint of citrus that cut through the seafood flavors and potatoes surprisingly well. Lobster Dumplings: Delicate and plump. The lobster flavor was strong but not overpowering. The sauce was creamy, yet light. The caviar added another hint of umami, the dot of the orange cream added a different flavor profile, and the sprinkle of chives brought brightness back into the dish. Mussels & Garlic Bread: The garlic bread was an add-on but don't skip out on it - the four small pieces of garlic bread was thoroughly toasty, crunchy, well-buttered and garlicky. Paired very well with the oily and creamy sauce the mussels came in. The cream sauce was poured onto the cooked mussels table-side. All in all, Ma-de KNOWS how to do sauces for sure. Each and every sauce the dishes came with were well-concocted. The portions are small but you are paying for quality ingredients and well-executed plates. I would come again and would recommend to friends. However, between Wayan and Ma de, I prefer the menu and atmosphere at the former. read more

Food 5/10 The first dish was impressive, but unfortunately, it just went downhill from there. I was so excited to try this spot out, but all I could get out of this meal was how SALTY everything was. The trout was absolutely delicious, but the lobster dumplings portions were tiny and literally tasted like frozen xia jiao (shrimp dumplings). The mushrooms were saltier, and the mussels were the saltiest. It was so salty that I got a pimple afterward. That's all I want to say. Atmosphere 6/10 A lot smaller than I thought, it's a very narrow space. Honestly I really liked the interior decor, it was very minimalist but had fresh touches with plants. Saturday 5:30pm When I read about its opening , I couldn't wait to try the restaurant, love Wayan and I don't think there are enough modern / less casual southeast Asians restaurants in the city . Lived in Asia and have visited loads of countries , food is something I truly miss. The location, ambiance , setting of this place is soho like , small but cozy, trendy. I like the bar and counter set up . My friend is a vegetarian and couldn't order as much dishes but there were enough options to accommodate our dietary requirements. She had the truffle toast , squash dumplings , mushroom ( we shared ) while I had the scallop sashimi and chirashi. While I understand this is a fusion, I'm not sure the potato with the raw fish and the rich sauce worked. Rice or a similar agent in my opinion is better . The biggest mistake on my part was sharing my feedback as it wasn't taken lightly. In fact , it made me feel uncomfortable. It's a pity that it was handled as such as my experience was tainted by that interaction. I'm sure the restaurant will do well , much luck. This is Wayan's sister restaurant and I was excited to try it. It's a cozy restaurant with a charming ambiance - the space is frankly not very large, so they make the best use of it. We ordered a few dishes to share: - Lobster Dumplings - a bit pricey, but worth the hype in my opinion! Each dumpling had a lot of flavor and the sauce was really good - Crispy Octopus - pictured here, but also grilled very well and pretty solid overall - Sweet Onion Tart - also another favorite from the night. I was a bit dubious from the name but it was a good mixture of cheese and caramelized onions - NZ Trout Tartare - we enjoyed the garlic bread, but honestly the tartare wasn't super flavorful and probably wouldn't get again - Diver Scallop Crudo - honestly not my favorite since the citrus sauce really overpowered the dish, and you couldn't taste much else Overall we had a good experience and the service was very nice, but it was a bit pricey for what we got. I think there are some solid dishes, but not sure if this would be a place I would come back to. read more
