Subarus recommendation was to replace the entire transmission. I went around to some other shops and got similar feedback. Turns out... it was the differential fluid. A couple hours of research pointed to the old differential fluid building up and not lubricating effectively, causing the shuddering. Perkins quoted me $6k for a new transmission. Issue fixed for $80 of fluid.
