Front desk staff is nice, but this place is really expensive. Their prices are incredibly high in comparison to other optometrists and they force you to pay for additional services beyond a basic eye exam to renew your glasses. Yearly. There's zero interest in saving you money. The doctor also told me I shouldn't get lasik because it doesn't work that well but eventually admitted they had it and have perfect vision. read more

Expensive, rude, and insult to injury both pairs of glasses I purchased were heavy and too painful to wear. I had to go elsewhere and fortunately I was told that my prescription can be made dramatically lighter. So, I have 2 pairs of outrageously expensive glasses that I can maybe use as paperweights? Let me start by saying I have only had two experiences with eye doctors in my history. One with another optometrist and I refused to go back. The other was at Macadam Vision Clinic with Dr Schober and it was great. Their staff was super helpful. They even checked my eligibility while I was on the phone setting up my initial appointment and found that my coverage wasn't available for another month and suggested I come in at that time. When I got to the office they brought me right in for the pre exam and explained everything they were doing. Dr Schober's exam was great. He explained everything he was doing and what he was finding. Their office seems to have very current equipment and I didn't need to have my eyes dilated so nobody had to drive me home. Though I wasn't able to pick out a pair of glasses then, the staff was conscientious of my time and encouraged me to come back with my wife and look again. They had a wide selections of frames and at no time did I feel pressured. This was a wonderful experience and I recommend Macadam Vision Clinic to anyone. read more

Awesome eye doctor !! Two thumbs up! If you need a new eye dr in Portland I say go here !! Free parking in a parking lot, good value & wonderful friendly staff. I just needed an annual exam cause it's been a few years and I'm moving to Central America in a couple months. I called all over town checking prices on eye exams and their price was the best cuz they offer a big discount for new patients. They got me in for my exam within a couple days and everyone there was friendly & efficient & helpful. The exam was super comprehensive for $150 including retina photos. The eye doctor (forgot her name but she's the woman in the duo of doctors) was super nice and took time to answer all my questions during my visit. Never made me feel rushed and no one pressured me to buy any glasses at their clinic. Bonus! read more

I've been seeing Dr. Schober since I moved to Portland in 1987. Over the years we've tried hard contacts (my eye balls didn't work with them but it was a fun experiment) and dozens of brands soft contact lenses way back when they were expensive, you cleaned them regularly and you hoped they lasted for a year. He's always willing to explain anything about the techniques he uses and at times has shown me how his equipment works. He's always trying out new brands of contacts in his own eyes before recommending them to his patients. In 25 years he has only made one mistake. The physical centers of the lens in the frames I bought are below where my eyes are -- they're designed so that most of the lens is below the eye. Unfortunately the lenses he made had the *optical* center in the physical center of the lens which was below my eyes. When I said things didn't look right, he quickly saw the mistake and had new lenses made. read more

Ive been going here for a couple of years. The optometrists do a good job, but the office staff are bad enough that I refuse to go back. They do not understand the role they play in making sure the customers leave happy. Sandra, the office manager, has always come across as a power trip with complete disregard for anyone's feelings, and my last visit confirmed that once again. Wow, what horrible customer service!! The Good: My BF and I have lived in the neighborhood around Macadam Vision since we moved to Portland three years ago. I personally have seen Dr. Shober each year, and he's nice enough, takes the time to explain what's going on with your eyes, and I actually feel like I'm learning something during my exam. The Bad and the Ugly: 1) My BF just tried to order contacts from them. They said his prescription expired TWO WEEKS ago and they could not see him for an appointment for another three weeks. He asked if he could buy a month's worth (he wears daily lenses) supply to hold him over until his next appointment - we're going to be in a wedding right before that appointment date and he doesn't want to wear glasses, and only has 3 days left of contacts. They said flat out NO. Nevermind that we've been going to them for three years, using our insurance with them to buy our contacts and their expensive frames and lenses (on which they always try heavily to upsell you). He went to the office personally the next day to speak with them in person to try to work something out. They said since he chose the "credit for frames" option of our insurance plan last year and not the "credit for contacts" and didn't separately buy contacts from them last year that they couldn't help him out. What is so ridiculous is that he paid for his contact fitting last year and if he had called only two weeks earlier they said they would have ordered contacts for him. 2) They are sketchy on what they charge for contact fittings. Two years ago I was charged about $40-45 (pretty standard, I believe that is what Blink charges too when I had called around looking for places when I first moved here). Last year, they charged me $75 and would not give me an explanation of why they charged me more, despite my asking several times. Well Macadam Vision... we were so lenient on you in the past because we live just a few blocks away, but this is just the nail in the coffin and we cannot put up with this garbage treatment anymore. Dr. Shober and his team are so friendly. I came in yesterday needing a new pair of glasses and a resupply of contacts. Romy priced out all my options to help me find the package that worked best with my insurance. Marcella came in early to get me started on the tests so that I could get out in time for a meeting I had. And Dr. Shober was great, as usual. Growing up my grandfather was my eye doctor, so I have had a lot of pairs of glasses in my day. Mostly bi-focals, mostly annoying to wear, very few did I ever wear regularly. That being said, I was referred here by a friend from work and I had such a great experience. The doctor was patient with me when it took 10 tries for me to sit still enough to get a proper glaucoma screening and she took the time to explain what she was doing and why it was important. We even shared a laugh when it was discovered that it is borderline illegal for me to be driving without glasses. After my exam a member of the office staff helped me pick frames. The thing I appreciated the most was that she was very respectful of my budget and didn't try to up sell me on anything. She helped me pick frames that fit comfortable and were flattering on my face. They had a huge selection of very stylish frames that were priced well. I honestly had expected to pay a lot more for what I got. The icing on the cake here is that I never had to wait around for anything. My appointment started right at 1pm and no time was wasted. I wish I could have that experience with more doctors! So kudos Dr. Bauer, I look forward to future eye exams! read more

I came to Macadam Vision because one of the coatings on my glasses started chipping off. Imagine looking through hairspray on your glasses that you can't wash off! Back story: The frames and lenses were 18 months old, and I bought them from a trendy, hip,shop in SE Portland. I fell in love with the gorgeous french frames but they were expensive. Really expensive. After two months of looking I couldn't find anything to take my mind off the gorgeous french frames, so I bit the bullet and got them. When the coating started to go I brought them back to the trendy shop and they were more than willing to replace the lenses for $400+, but apparently weren't concerned that the coating was wearing off so soon. I've been wearing glasses for over 20 years and I've never had a coating go bad. Ever. I was ticked off that they wouldn't replace them for free so I started shopping for a new vision care business. Macadam Vision could get me in quickly and I'm soooo happy I found them! Dr. Schober is funny and warm, and I actually liked my eye exam. He was patient with me as I flipped back and forth between slight changes so that we could get my prescription perfect. He e-mailed me the photo of my retina so I could show my kids. Did I mention the guy is funny? Picking out a pair of new frames, and then getting the lenses replaced in my current frames was easy and fast. I'm almost blind, so I need the super spendy thin lenses. I bought a back-up pair using a "special" they were running, and I'm pleased with the frames. I'm off to pick up my original frames today. I've been a "mall shop" kind of glasses girl for a long time. I bought my gorgeous french frames from the only shop in the area that sells that brand. I lucked into Macadam Vision center and I'm happy to say I have a new vision care home. read more

Both Dr. Schober and Dr. Bauer take the time to listen to you and make suggestions based upon what you the patient wants. Sounds simple, but in this day of exam room upselling it is refreshing. I have been to other Optometrists, and now live almost 30 min away, but I gladly make the drive to their office. You will not be disappointed. read more

Drs. Schober and Bauer are the kind of health care professionals I always want to see. They take the trouble to talk to their patients and explain everything thoroughly. There's a concept: actually COMMUNICATE with patients! Bravo! Greg and Mauri have been practicing for over 30 years, and while it is important for healthcare providers to keep up on new developments and technology, it is also of benefit that they are very experienced doctors. I doubt if there is anything that one or the other of them hasn't seen at some time or other and when you have someone who can reach back that far in his or her chosen profession, you really have pure gold.
