I have written about Macayo's many times, bit never this location. I wrote how my wife, brother, and sister were born a half mile from the first Macayo's, eating there for at least half a century. We like Macayo's. This one is quite nice. I call it a stage 2 Macayo's. Tall ceiling, pueblo style, stained glass, nice ambiance. We had our Friday Family Lunch eating family favorites, tacos, enchiladas, tostadas and of course chips and salsa - two sides of the hot stuff please! Beverage- ice tea. Will we come back? This place has always been terrific. We sit in the bar area most of the time. We love the chips and salsa and the drinks are ok. The BBQ chicken salad was our favorite which is crazy to think at a Mexican restaurant but it was always fantastic... no longer on the menu (for a long time now). Tacos are always great. Service is a hit and miss. They seem to be short staffed with one person running around trying to serve everyone which is unfortunate, as I wouldn't be so happy either if I were the only one working. The atmosphere and decor is always nice... wish they would update and get back to the way they used to be. Seems run down a bit and in big need for some updates! oh my .. biggest by far complaint is the bathrooms! I can get passed the food but to feel disgusted walking out of that bathroom and wonder how the poor staff deals with it and even more how to even want to eat your food!!! On to the food. : I got the Chile Relleno plate -- rice was chewy , refried beans had an old sour taste - maybe reheated one to many times . The Rellenos batter running along the plate was not great and tasted like old oil -- very sad other plate was and Enchilada Trio-- baja sauce was dried onto the tortilla -- like it sat for a while -- all the tortillas were dry and broke apart -- chicken was good , beef was dried out Sorry but I will not be running back here-- if the establishment reads this.. This location used to be THE place for Glendale. They have allowed the physical space to deteriorate. Menus were frayed. Service was excellent at 4:30. They do have light eaters options that are budget will manage. The food? Rice extremely dry, beans same sour taste others remarked on. Chicken tacos were full of nicely blended veggies. Chicken very dry. Friday night and by 6:00 very busy. There are so many better options now. read more

I'm sorry, I just left and have to say it was horrible! The chips came dripping in oil. I ordered the vegetable fajitas. The flour tortilla was drenched in oil. The vegetables were huge almost raw carrots, huge pieces of zucchini and more oil with the peppers and onions! Sorry, but there are too many other Mexican restaurants I can count on for consistently good food! read more

First the server didn't even introduce himself. Half the cheese crisp was burnt. Food was bland, tacos had no cheese, sour cream or flavor, had to ask for sour cream just to finish eating one. Ugh. I know that's a sound and not a word, but I really have no other way to describe this experience. It had been a while since my mother and I had been there, and I decided I wanted to go for my birthday. We waited for about 5 minutes to be seated, right behind another family of 4. It felt strange because they had literally just opened, (though a few people were already seated) but I brushed it off. After being seated and looking over our menu, our server, Saul, came to our table. After serving our chips and salsa and getting our drinks, we knew what we wanted and ordered. He really didn't seem to be paying much attention to us; he kept staring out the window as if he was looking at something. Still, I stayed quiet; some servers just aren't good. Saul was courteous and polite, but... Well, you'll see. My mom ordered a shredded beef enchilada and a ground beef taco, along with a cheese crisp. I ordered two ground beef tacos with two flour tortillas. The cheese crisp was served first, and though mom liked it, she noted the cheeses had changed. Then the entrees arrived and it all went downhill. While the plate was hot, my mother's enchilada was cold. When she told Saul after he came to refill our tea... Nothing. Crickets. The restaurant was loud, but not that loud. Totally ignored her. My tacos were also not great, definite recipe change there. The shells and the tortillas were great, exactly as I remembered, but the beef? It didn't taste great. It was too spicy. I know, Mexican food, but the tacos were not that spicy before! Mom said her taco was also cold. Mine was hot, but the taste just... wasn't it. What a disappointment. We were going to get dessert (it *was* for my birthday, after all), but we were so disappointed with our food that we worked double-time to get the heck out of there. Food: 2 stars - We ordered the 1 and 1 mix and match: 1 enchilada with shredded beef and 1 side of beans for the wifey. I ordered the burro bowl with skirt steak. Wifey's order came out wrong. They gave us an enchilada with ground beef and a side of rice. So we had to wait for the waiter to come around to advise of the mixup. My burro bowl was decent but portion size was a little underwhelming for $18. The enchilada with shredded beef was okay but they were out of their famous Baja sauce. So that was disappointing. Apparently their Baja sauce is on a lot of their dishes but they ran out that day. Would have been nice to see some sort of discount seeing as their menu was not complete but we still had to pay their complete prices. Free chips and salsa which is standard at these Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants. Salsa was very watery which makes it hard to dip the chips. Chips were well seasoned and salsa was decent, but just not a fan of runny salsa. Service: 2 stars - Docking stars for service because they were out of their Baja sauce. It's their "famous" sauce and they run out? I haven't eaten at Macayo's in probably a decade as a Phoenix native. How can you run out of your famous sauce that is used in a large portion of your menu?! Unacceptable for an established restaurant such as Macayo's. The waiter didn't even offer any substitutions or anything complimentary for the inconvenience. It was a Monday at 5pm, not like we were at the tail end of a huge dinner rush; the restaurant was not busy at all. Management should have been able to do something for their oversight in not having enough Baja sauce for their dinner service. Overall poor experience from their service. Ambiance: 3 stars - Nothing stood out as spectacular. It's a casual vibe with clean bathrooms but not going to save it from my poor experience with their food/service. Overall: 2 stars - Needs improvement. This restaurant has been here for so long, it feels like it's just on cruise control. Is being out of their famous Baja sauce going to tank the place? No. Is one bad review going to make a change? Probably not. However, I'm sharing my experience on a place that I used to have pleasant experiences at through my high school years. I might come back to try their Baja sauce (hopefully it's available) but might wait for the next decade. If you do give Macayo's a shot, hopefully they have their famous Baja sauce and you have a better experience than me. read more

Myself & my entire family have loved Macayo's since I was very little. We have been regular customers my whole life. Sadly, the restaurant chain itself seems to be suffering. We love Aten! We come here specifically to see him. He's the best and truly someone we consider a family friend. But for the last 6-9 months anytime we've come in, there's an overwhelming grease trap / sewage smell inside. It's really strong in the bathrooms. The last time we were there it made me feel nauseous and we went to sit outside instead, then swore off this location. It made me really sad, because we've had issues at other locations in the last few years as well and want to see this restaurant succeed. We want to see our favorite server! But it's just... a shame. I picked up takeout order last night, April 21, 2026. Upon getting there a six dollar charge for onions on my food which is never been charged before. I questioned the manager Jeff Tapp about this and he says we've always charged that in which they have never charged this. asked what do you want me to do and roll his eyes. I asked him to take the charge off and he wouldn't I was disappointed and he said whatever! When I got home with six tacos and two green chili burritos there was no onions on the food. Also a very small bag of chips and small container of salsa that I was picking up for five people. I went back and asked for the manager and he didn't even apologize. I meant to write this review a few days ago but better late than never.. Julie our server was just absolutely amazing!! We had great service from the minute we walked in when she noticed we hadn't been helped, apologized and kindly walked us to our table. She was kind, knowledgeable and very helpful. We've never been to Macayo's so she went ahead and suggested some appetizers, drinks and entrees and she nailed it. Everything was delicious! $5 margarita all day everyday hmm YES PLEASE. Definitely will be coming back and asking for her section she was very friendly and made our experience great. read more

Women's restroom- no towels due to broken dispenser. Sewer smell was overpowering. Restroom was way past due for maintenance. Food was good, although service was pretty shoddy. Obviously checking in and saw a nice surprise of a free cheese crisp! My favorite. It was yum. Got a mix and match with a shredded beef taco and rice. Also yum. Chips were great, water stayed refilled. Our server was attentive and nice. It was Christmas Eve and there were quite a few people in the restaurant for lunch. We love Macayo! The food is consistently excellent, and and they have added a very affordable lunch menu (drinks included!) that has something for everyone. Many of the servers have been there a long time, and it's nice to always be treated like family there. The ambiance is colorful and welcoming, and the traditional music is nice in the background, but never too loud. This is one of our favorite places. Please check it out! read more

Saul was amazing. There were 30 of us and he did an amazing job working the tables. Drinks were perfect as well as the meals being ordered and delivered to the table with no errors. Our glasses were never close to empty. He always had a smile on his face even when the 12 children were giving him their orders and changing them when they realized that they wanted what one of the other children ordered. Great skills and attitude displayed for the 2 hours that we were there. He made our experience absolutely amazing from start to finish. read more

Our server was alone for a large party; it seems like this location is chronically understaffed, based on the few times I've been here. That being said, she did a fantastic job, kept the wait short, and made sure everyone got the correct order. She was a true professional and I am impressed, as a food service worker myself! The food was really terrible. Our server did amazing given the circumstances but man, that was the worst plate of food I've had in a while. Meat was dry and tasted a little off. I love coming here to eat! The food is always great and out quickly! I am a creature of habit and typically eat the same thing but a while ago, I met Aten here who talked to me into trying the corn tamale bites & have been obsessed since then! I was coming here once a month for lunch with my son and work conflicts stopped it, so it has been awhile & I was so excited to see Aten would be our server! I got my normal amazing mango margarita and of course, my tamale bites and a cheese crisp and I was a happy woman! Where to start... We had not been to Macayo's in quite a while, and were meeting friends. Host was harried, disorganized, and cold. Waiter was moderately friendly, but also somewhat withdrawn. Insincere would be the right word, I think. Wife and I ordered and split what used to be one of our fav dishes at the 19 Ave and Tbird location, before it closed many yrs ago -- pork carnitas. Awful. Their online ordering always has something wrong with it. Today, the food options are different for me versus my husband when we are both signing in on their main web site to order from a specific location. Literally, I can't customize anything, am missing food options, and am completely unable to order any of the mix and match combinations because when I select to order two or three items, it automatically skips the first or second item option so you can't actually complete the mix and match order. If we are both logging on to their site the same way and both have the same phones with all software updates completed, why is my experience different than his? We needed to order from mine because I have two rewards coupons. The minute I log into my account using his phone, my coupons aren't there either. So, bottom line-Macayo's lost our business completely today because their online ordering experience is terrible. read more

Food was good seasoned well, fresh ingredients, and portion sizes were nice. The cheese crisp had the perfect amount of cheese and cooked nicely. The house margarita was a bit too mix heavy. Service at the bar wasn't great, but wasn't bad. My dining partner was pretty much ignored. Overall though, we enjoyed our visit and will come back. read more
