While the rest of my crew was eating with some healthy options nearby, I needed to see some sports and have a cocktail, so Macayo's was the perfect choice in the plaza. The seating and servers threw me off because there was no immediate help & took me a few minutes of me staring to finally get some help, but apparently, on Mondays, it is a special margarita day, and everything was moving fast. When I did get some help, she shared it was a holiday and the staff was short, but didn't use it as an excuse and was tentative throughout. If you purchased a custom Macayo's cup, you get $0.79 margarita refills. So you already know where this review will be going the next time. I ended up getting a carne asada burrito (enchilada style with cheese), however, I'm still not sure what it was (see picture) , but it was still good. Came with rice and beans to keep it simple, I had a really good view of the televisions at the bar which was my intent (NBA Games). I focused on having just the happy hour margaritas, both on the rocks and then frozen for only $5, and they were good. Located across the street from ASU so expect a lot of traffic from students & a busy parking lot. If your near by, Scooter it. I would never order from this place very upsetting when I call and the person on the phone couldn't even articulate or get me a manager to discuss my concerns and order. This is more about the service and wait times during lunch. We have tried several times to go in on our lunch break only to be told they are too busy and it's gunna be along time but go ahead and sit where we want. Why on earth would you only have 1 staff member maybe 2 on during a lunch rush daily. When we go in we are told to sit where we want but they couldn't get to us for a while. Find staff that can deal with a rush. Or put out staff on. Your restaurant isn't that big. But also the food is mediocre and it comes out cold too. read more

This is a newer restaurant by ASU and is located in the perfect location steps away from Tempe Improv. I'd much rather go to this location since it's newer, cleaner, and the seating is spacious, compared to the older locations that are outdated! A special shout out to PHOENIX our waiter/bartender who took care of us the entire time! We had the mix and match meals where I had enchiladas. The food was good but they ran out of things which was a little disappointing! They ran out of spinach in which, I wanted spinach enchiladas and they also ran out of something that they used to make a Moscow mule which as an adult grownup, I wanted since this was my social drinking weekend! I enjoy a good cold Moscow Mule. I settled for baja chicken enchiladas and a rum and coke. I can not believe how much drinking I've done as a grownup this weekend. Nothing crazy but having drinks with my meals is a huge deal for me! In any case, I will definitely come here again, as it's the perfect spot to go before attending a comedy show which is steps away from here! Phoenix did amazing and deserves 5 months off with pay. When we get to this side of our lovely valley, Macayo's calls our appetites. We often stop by. The family has dined with the brand since it opened. The two gray-haired beauties I dine with were once cute three year old girls with sparkling eyes, big smiles and twin pony tails sitting up to their chins at the table, crunching on chips dipped slightly in the mild salsa. Tacos and enchiladas are our order of the day plus a dish of the hotter salsa. Service takes care of us, even if we are unknowns. I enjoy the chicken pompano, spinach enchiladas and other "off the taco and enchilada" side of the menu. The beans and rice are satisfying. No complaints. We shall return read more

This is opening day of the new restaurant. They moved just down the street. I was greeted at the door. I was given a mug and a free t-shirt. I was seated and hostess brought water, chips and salsa. There was only a couple other tables at this time. There were more employees than customers. I waited 10 mins no one came to take my order. A employee was walking by and said how is everything. I said I'd like to order. I started with a app. It took about 12 mins for these fried tamale bites. Service was so slow i did not order anything else. A manager stopped by to ask what I thought and I was honest. Service needed a lot of improvement but I understood it was opening day. He said it was shift change and they were confused who had my table. I decided I was already there 45 mins I was done. I asked the waiter for my check. I noticed they did not give me happy hour price. The waiter was no where to be found. I saw the manager again and told him. I had to show him the menu and correct price. He apologized and said he would fix it. After 10 more mins this manager disappeared and still no waiter. I stopped another manager he said he would look for the other one. He finally came back said manager got side tracked and started a meeting with all the waitstaff. So he said he would try to find someone to fix it. So after another 10 mins the original waiter brought the correct check. I would have given 4 stars because of opening day but 2 managers dropped the ball besides the waitstaff. I am dinging them with two stars for not being able to eat there. It's been a long time since I ate at Macayo's. I loved the old location on Central south of Indian School, which obviously is long gone. And I liked the one down on Thunderbird and 19th, also long gone. I was surprised last month to learn that there are no more in the central Phoenix area! But I moved from Phoenix twenty years ago and it's hard to keep track of things. But last month I learned there's one in still in Tempe.... I always had good memories of great food and service at Macayo's. It was also a favorite of my parents, who passed away a few years ago. They held their 60th anniversary celebration at the one on Central. This week my wife and I are back in town, and staying in Tempe, and I wanted to eat at Macayo's to revive some memories and make some new ones. But the memories were not to be good. When we entered the restaurant, there was no one at the reception kiosk. It took over five minutes for someone to appear and for us to be seated. The restaurant was not very busy, well under half capacity looking at the number of occupied tables, and only one person at the bar. It was not hopping. And once seated, no server appeared. We waited a reasonable amount of time, then left. We went across the street to another Mexican restaurant, had a fantastic meal with great flavor. Now I wonder if I'll bother coming back. read more

I served at the Dobson Road location many years ago. I've kept going back (to Depot Cantina then 202/Rural and now, Rural/University) for the Baja Burro but wowza, have the standards continually fallen since the Johnson's owned it. Food was great! Although our server was nice, service was very slow (particularly given there were only five other tables and it was 4pm on a Wednesday). The restroom was filthy and surrounding tables were left dirty throughout our visit. I'm not sure the food makes up for all of the shortcomings and lack of leadership. read more

Walked in just after 6pm on a Saturday, the place was pretty empty with tables set and seats at the bar. The girl asks how many and grabs menus and says she will seat us. We start walking toward the dining area, assuming we will meet her on the other side of the wall which has a weird setup. We stand there for a bit, she talks to another worker and comes over and says it will be about 15 minutes and we could wait in the front. Ugh, no thanks. Macayo's is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. Whether Taco Tuesday or any day of the week. We like to sit in our favorite waitress' Carla's section. She's very efficient, professional and pretty to boot. Yesterday we met the new manager Juan. What a nice young man he is. I know he will go far in life, as he is customer focused and wants to serve the best Mexican food. I had my favorite. I recently started going to/getting take-out from this Macayo's and just realized it's moving soon, but hey...better late than never in reviewing it. Also it's moving, like a few blocks down the street so I'm guessing things will be similar. Actually the one thing that will hopefully be a bit better at the new location is the parking/getting into this place. The current location is kind of a pain to get to since it's right off the freeway by ASU. Anyway, I've come here for Happy Hour a couple times in the past few months and I've been shocked that it's now a little more crowded. They have a pretty decent selection of appetizers available for HH and the prices are great especially for how much food you get. I always love the cheese crisps here and the mini chimis. You can't go wrong with a margarita either. The servers here have always been friendly. I also get takeout from here every now and then, and one of things I really like is that they don't skimp on the chips and salsa when you do so. I dined at Macayo's while visiting Arizona for spring break, and it was an absolutely amazing experience! The environment was lively and welcoming, and the music was the perfect volume! I sat at the bar, and Claire warmly greeted me and took my drink order. I ordered the Signature Sampler to get a good mix of everything, and this was absolutely the best decision! My favorite thing on the plate was the chicken taquitos, and the spinach con queso was simply to DIE for. Everything on the plate was excellent, and each was topped uniquely and decadently in a way that truly highlighted each item. Will definitely be coming back next time I'm in town! read more

We had high hopes because at least 2 in our group had come before and had great food and quick service on a weekend. So it's Tuesday night. Barely any patrons filling tables. We had a friendly group of 11. We show up around 8pm for happy hour and dinner. Figured it would be pretty easy breezy. We could count on one hand how many times we saw our waitress. It took OVER AN HOUR for all 11 of us to get our meals, and I had only ordered soup. Similar meals were mixed up. Some ordered beef while others had chicken... she didn't bother checking who had what, so friends had to either figure it out between themselves or agree to just trade meals if one of them had already started eating because we were starving by the time food arrived. Most of the meals were just barely warm, including my tortilla soup. The flavor of everything was good, but the temperature as just barely above room temp. We started wondering if our waitress was also helping cook because we only saw 1 other waitress and it was taking far longer to receive our meals than would be considered normal. We discovered later that our waitress was very new to the job, so I'm sure she was doing the best she could. That said, we don't intend on returning. This was our first and probably our last time visiting this location. We ordered our dessert to go since no one else in our group had time to order dessert, and since we were waiting for our check to be split, which in itself took 20 minutes. read more

Macayo's in Tempe is the kind of place that unapologetically blurs the line between the ordinary and the wonderfully odd. Case in point: the carne asada chimichanga draped in spinach queso. Yes, spinach queso. It sounds like a culinary sin committed at a juice bar, but here it's delicious, and somehow it works--like your eccentric uncle showing up at Thanksgiving in a velvet jacket and pulling it off. The appetizer was a peculiar but satisfying cheese pizza-quesadilla hybrid, dripping in gooey goodness, serving up more cheese than you'd think the laws of physics would allow. No time for drinks, sadly--blame the rush of an ASU game night. But from what we tasted, it's a cheesy, comforting meal perfect for when you're craving something familiar with a twist. I left with a full stomach and just enough curiosity to return to this unique Mexican hacienda. read more

What a shame! I've gone to Macayo's since I was a little kid and it is "our Mexican food place" in my family. Their quality these days varies widely by location, but I had high hopes for this new space. Sadly in the span of 10 days I have attempted to eat here twice and they have been out of key ingredients and I have just left and gone elsewhere. Last Wednesday we sat down and when ordering were told they didn't have any beans. NO beans?! At a Mexican restaurant? Then, this afternoon, we were told they didn't have any rice? These are shelf stable items that don't go bad for months. I don't understand. How is it remotely possible that a Mexican food restaurant doesn't have a healthy stock of critical, non-perishable ingredients? The people in charge of ordering are GOING to kill this restaurant. You're telling me nobody can go get a generic bag of rice or beans from the Trader Joe's across the parking lot? It boggles the mind. Next time I want to consider eating there I am literally going to call and ask -- "Do you have beans? do you have rice?". Macayo's is an Arizona institution. I have mixed feelings. I've had Macayo's before but it's been well over a decade now so we decided to give it a go. The restaurant had a nice welcoming feel. It's clean and cute with their decor. It took about 5-10 minutes to be seated which was no big deal at all. Our server was nice and welcoming but we didn't see him very often. Ordered our drinks and an appetizer and those came fairly quick but we finished our appetizer before even getting to order our main course. We ordered and waited at least 30 minutes for our food. During this time our server was nowhere to be found and seemed confused when we told him we were still waiting for our food. Finally it was brought out and wasn't the best tasting. The rice had a strange taste and was not pleasant at all. Tacos were decent. The beans were delicious. To top it all off, we paid with a gift card and it took FIVE people to figure out how to use the gift card. Let's just say that after this experience, we likely won't return. read more
