We came to Macheko for the first time , it was a Friday. Very busy, but we got our food pretty quick. The service was good, the waiter was very attentive.We tried the fried chicken, I liked the blazing sauce better than the plain one. Jap chae was flavorful, but I don't think I will order the seafood next time, too many shells, The Gop Chang Soon Du Bu soup was ok, not my favorite. This is the second time that I have gone to this place and right off the bat, I recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere is a combination of casual/cozy. The volume in the restaurant can get a little loud but not obnoxious. The waitstaff were friendly, efficient, patient and attentive. My daughter has low blood sugar and if she doesn't eat regularly, she feels very shaky with an upset stomach. I went up to our waitress and told her what was happening. She dashed into the kitchen and returned with a bowl of rice. My daughter ate the rice and felt better right away. Kudos to our waitress for caring and having urgency in helping my daughter. For dinner - We ordered : - "Pork party" for 2. Marinated pork steak, Belly and sliced pork loin. You take the pork and grill it at your table. The pork was very tender and tasty. Later during dining we ordered a half serving of pork. There were 6 of us with 2 ravenous teenagers. - Miso soup. It was only $ 1 a bowl. - Jap Chae A glass noodle dish stir fried with beef and a dash of toasted sesame seed oil. This was very good dish and one of my all time favorites. If you don't know what to select this is a recipe anyone would like. - Samson Champon This us made with a base of gochujang ( a red chili paste). If you are familiar with Soon du boo, you will understand this soup. Instead of tofu, its made with noodles. I enjoy Soon du boo although to much tofu for me. This version of the soup with noodles is spot on for me. - Jjagang Myeon This is a noodle dish with black bean paste. The taste for me was Chef Boyardee's spaghetti in a black pasta sauce. My daughter really liked this dish. I believe this dish does not fit an American's palate. Their menu offers many more offerings. Such as beef Korean BBQ and varouos Hot Pot offerings. Additionaly there are many other single dishes to order off the menu. Do I have any critiques about this restaurant ? Nothing worth mentioning. This place is not cheap but you will feel value for the money spent, the incredible food that you had, the excellent service and the great experience. I love Korean food - have traveled to South Korea and devoured tons of the stuff in NYC. Macheko Grill is, hands down, the best Korean restaurant I've encountered since I moved to the greater Detroit area. Visited once during the pandemic for takeout, but knew immediately this was a place for dining in. BBQ tables available on request, but also AMAZING appetizers cooked to order (if you think most takeout kimchi pancakes are good, wait till their fresh one is brought to your table). We got the beef combo, and everything was fabulously different on our tray. Banchan are on point, delicious savory fermented bean sauce and sesame oil are brought out front for your dipping pleasure. Fried chicken is over the moon! Get half mild spicy/half soy garlic. My kids flipped over this place. Don't walk, run/drive/bike/whatever to Macheko and MACK OUT. read more

Why pay $30-$40 For tough, chewy Korean bbq and insipid fried chicken - you guys have in every day on the Ypsi Edge of Ann Arbor, I'm s jealous! Got this order Door Dashed. It was still hot/warm. I ordered gyoza, pretty similar to mandoo. Ordered kimbap, see picture. Still warm and delicious. I ordered jap chae. Came with some ban chan. The one downside I would say is the beef/bulgogi, is kind of a weird texture. Chopped fine so there wasn't too much flavor except maybe a little salty. Definitely would try again! read more

I've been back many times since my first visit and after my yelp review, but through their 2.x year, the chef changed and current chef is their 3rd one and you can definitely tell the flavor of their food has gone down. A month ago, I was having lunch with my family and we ordered several dishes and one of items we got was ddukbokki (spicy rice cake)... when I first had it after they opened it was good, but now it's looks the same, but the broth is nothing but hot gochujang water (spicy red bean paste); no flavor whatsoever. It was the same for other dishes, the seasoning of those dishes also went down - there soontofu, chompong, Yukgaejeon all suffered from the chef change over. The only dish I really enjoyed on this visit was their side dish (banchan), the radish kimchi. The original chef is now at Kimchi in Canton... funny though all the menu offering at Kimchi is the same as Macheko Grill, even their menu looks the same. I just hope they work on the changes and ensure their seasoning don't suffer further... if you like their chicken, then you should go visit OMC in Canton, the 2nd store offers different chicken options, including some Japanese food and "cupbap" - rice in a bowl. read more

Always eager to try a new place (and Yelp about it, natch), I jumped at the opportunity to visit Macheko Grill with a friend recently. Located in an unassuming shopping center on the west side of Ypsi, I had to keep my eyes peeled to make sure I could see the place. Thankfully, it's location also meant abundant parking once I spotted it. Upon arriving, I was immediately greeted by a friendly employee, who seated me and brought some waters. My friend arrived a minute later and we got down to business -- deciding on food. She was a seasoned pro at deciding on Korean bbq, so I followed her recommendation for LA Galbi. We also decided on a Kimchi pancake and Miso soups for starters. The soup was out in short order, followed closely by the Kimchi pancake. Even if you're sensitive to the raw pickled Kimchi flavor, I recommend the pancake, as it's more subtle but still flavorful. The real piece de resistance was the La Galbi. Served with some accoutrement of mushrooms, onions, sauces, and lettuce for wrapping, it was perfectly-cooked and seasoned beef at your fingertips. We kept several rounds of it going until the food was gone, and stayed satisfied with some sticky rice on the side. Heard good things about this place and came feeling excited. Hate to say this but it was an awful dining experience. First, they were severely understaffed and people were lined up by the door for 20-30 minutes when there were many open tables. We saw at least 5 groups of people leaving while we were here because they never got helped. Secondly, the food is bad. We ordered japchae, gamjatang, LA galbi, and kanpungi. They all tasted like straight up MSG. Gamjatang, which translates to "potato soup", didn't even have a single piece of potato. We didn't get our kanpungi until we were completely done with our meal. They kept asking us to wait a little longer and it ended up taking almost an hour from the time we placed our order. What's even worse is that it was soggy and didn't have any flavor-such a huge disappointment. Thirdly, the lettuce we got alongside the galbi was absolutely disgusting. There were black spots all over and even a dead bug on one of them. Lastly, the waitresses here have an attitude! The only good part was the side dishes. Tasty kimchi and potato salad. I'm not sure if we just came at a bad time and ordered the wrong things, but we will not be returning. read more

I moved here during the pandemic so I haven't been in yet. This is a review for the fried chicken. I was missing Ktown and thought I'd give it a shot. Y'all. Do not sleep on this Korean fried chicken. I got some with Korean zing sauce (a sort of sweet and spicy mix) and some with soy garlic (which is much more exciting than it sounds) and it. Was. Perfect. Perfectly crispy and so flavorful and tender. The spice blend they use before the out the sauce on is gooorgeous. I'm a sticky mess now and so happy. Some side notes, it came with some rice that had seaweed and some sauce - delish - and I also got some kimchi which is spicy and delicious everything it should be. It's a fun, tasty deviation from the standard beef/vegetarian bibimbops and intensely flavorful. Even though it's listed as a hot item, the spice level was bearable and this is coming from someone who rarely eats spicy food. Service was great and restaurant was tidy. Because of the pandemic, I was in isolation (and quarantine) for months. Cabin Fever became real.  During this time, I had become dependent upon several services, including the Macheko Grill and their food delivery. I had recently become a fan of Korean fare, and on a whim and some decent ratings I tried out some delivery from the Macheko Grill. The delivery was fairly prompt, consistently, each time that I placed an order. And likewise for each order, they always followed directions or requests thoughtfully and without errors.  And the food, if it was only decent it would make this place a definite solid bargain, but since their food is consistently very good, I believe that the Macheko Grill is actually a gem of a little Grill that could.  They seem to put thought and effort into their clients' needs and satisfaction, and that is an increasingly rare attribute these days. I haven't gone very far into the menu, but everything that I have tried has been very good. I especially love the Beef Bibimbap, which is excellent; an old friend turned me on to Bibimbap and I still love it to this day. This has become one of the foods that I have to order every now and again just satisfy "the crave"! And thanks to the Macheko Grill, I can have that crave delivered on request, and with considerable care and attention. read more

Exquisite miso soup. Probably one of the best. The seafood pancake is good, right amount of crispy, probably could have been a little less oily. The spicy cod soup was moderately spicy with a hint of miso flavor. The place is a tad expensive but worth the money. Although there are few Korean restaurant here during covid, I would still consider one of the best Korean restaurants in town, part of the reason I am a regular. There are a lot of choices in food, BBQ, hot pot, noodles (Samsun Champon, my favorite). On top of it, good service! The staffs here are friendly even when they are busy. We were introduced to Macheko by some friends back in 2019. The restaurant is a gem hiding in the vast wasteland that is Ypsilanti food. While the food is reasonably priced, it's so good that the meal ends up being at the pricey end of things for the experience that we mostly have it as a treat. We ended up there yesterday while out to pick up supplies during the pandemic. We really weren't expecting to do a sit-down meal and hadn't been in a restaurant for almost five months. They were largely setup for call ahead for reservations, but accommodated us with a short wait. While they're clearly doing good business with takeout, they're taking excellent precautions for the few people that get to go there for sit-in dining. We were kept quite separate from the few other guests. The food was still good. Hygiene was great. Staff was wearing masks the entire time. We're happy that not only are they continuing to do business, but also taking care of themselves and their customers. P.S. The kimchi has some fangs. :-) read more

The kimchi was really good! I ordered online and it was super busy so I don't have much to say about the service. The ambiance was very nice though. Decided to try Macheko Grill for #takeouttuesday because I was really craving kimmari, which is hard to find at your average Korean restaurant. It's basically a seaweed roll filled with noodles and deep fried. It comes with a chili sauce that's great, BUT I really recommend you also get the ddukbokki (spicy rice cakes) and dip the kimmari in the spicy sauce. Truly a game changer. I was also pleasantly surprised by the crispiness of the kimmari since I had driven 15 minutes to get home so it sat for at least that long. I also got the jajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce) which they had separated the noodles and the sauce for the takeout. Excellent idea since the noodles kept their texture (chewy and springy). The sauce was nice and sweet and had good seasoning. Portion was huge too. I would love to come back here again in the future. Trying to support many restaurants during this time, so I would definitely recommend that people add Macheko Grill to the rotation. Came here with friends this past weekend. We ordered the fried chicken with Korean spice to share, and my friend and I ordered the cheese bulging I to split. While waiting for the food, the server brought some cold appetizer dishes (kimchi, pickled cucumbers, mashed potatoes). The fried chicken came out quickly and was pretty decent! The chicken was spun with the right amount of sauce, while still maintaining the fried crispy goodness of its skin. I really dislike when restaurants drown fried chicken in sauce and it becomes a wet goopy mess. The meat itself was cooked thoroughly and tender, how fried chicken should be. The cheese bulgogi was pretty yummy. The food comes on a hot plate in what appears to be a shallow cast iron bowl with a track around the outside. Inside the bowl was raw vegetables and meat. The server turned on the hot plate after setting it down on the table. The cheese came in a separate small dish. It was just typical shredded mozzarella cheese you would place on the track yourself, to be melted as your food cooks. This took about 5-7 minutes. The bulgogi was flavorful and savory, and tasted great with the cheese on top. (But really, what doesn't taste better with more cheese?) The servers gave us more cheese upon request. While it was enough to just satiate my friend and I, I'm not sure if the cheese bulgogi dish is worth $24 for the amount of food it comes with. I probably would not get it again unless I could split it with a friend and get other dishes on the side. The servers were also somewhat inattentive - we had to flag them down when we had requests. I don't think this restaurant lives up to its name as a "grill". For being one of the only currently 4 star korean restaurants in the area, I had higher expectations for the meat. As a kbbq lover, I find it really easy to notice when a place has good quality cuts and fresh meat. As a group of 5, our table ordered samgyupsal and LA galbi. I particularly love samgyupsal, so I was really excited for it, but realized that theirs is not as tender or well prepared as I'd like. It is on the dry side (lacking juiciness) and with a medium thickness (just a grade higher than say, store bought thin cuts that one would usually order for outdoor grilling picnics). The LA galbi texture was wonderful; it was tender and very juicy. However, the marinade was way too sweet for galbi. Galbi marinade is supposed to complement the natural savory taste of the rib, not hide it behind cups of sugar.. As for the quantity... not enough for the price. It was $26 for about 5 pieces of galbi, and $21 for 9 three-inch strips of samgyupsal. Back in Chicago, I could get twice as much samgyupsal for half the price and with two grades up in quality. The side dishes were meh. Nothing interesting. Just the standard fish cake and seaweed and kimchi. I think if it were just a restaurant but not a kbbq grill restaurant, I would give it that same 4 star rating, because the other dishes are actually pretty good. Their do-ga-ni-tang (ox cartilage soup $16) looked really good and had so much in the stone bowl. My soondaeguk was also surprisingly VERY well made with such deep flavor -- lots of soondae in it too, which made me feel that it was worth the $13. Plus, they have a wide variety of stews that other korean restaurants don't really make! Things i would not get next time: -- cheese ddukbokki (rice cake). It looked really fun to eat (and it was!!), BUT definitely not worth the $19 as they used very very minimal number of rice cakes and filled the rest up with veggies and fish cake instead. (I see you, don't cheat me of my rice cakes :( ...) and the cheese they used on the outside (which they forgot at first btw) was just plain mozzarella. Nothing fancy. I can make it myself for $5 at home. It's cool to get a video of it for social media, but that's about it. Not tasty. -- gyochon chicken (glazed fried chicken) because what the heck is that glaze? Just tastes a lot like garlic and honey. The chicken itself is fried very well, but the glaze overpowers it. The inside texture of the chicken is also dry.. so sad. Could've been a great dish. But wow, they do a fantastic job with service! The servers are all so friendly and attentive. They are really doing great in this area! No other korean restaurants are this friendly. Idk, in the end, we ate a lot, and went home happy. But I don't think I'll come back, unless I'm craving a special stew :) TL;DR Do -- order the soup entres and appetizers! -- come here for the old classic korean dishes -- try and find uncommon stews in their menu! I love the variety and great flavors at Macheko! The prices are pretty decent too. And throw in that it's right in Ypsi -- doesn't get better than that. I love that they have a lunch menu, because it's right down the street from work, so I can make it in and out within the hour. I've yet to experience a long wait so that's another plus. The atmosphere is laid back and unassuming, and the staff are usually very welcoming. They definitely have and will continue to keep my business. read more

SC and I came by for dinner at a friend's recommendation. I ordered my usual winter dish- ddeok man du guk. The kimmari appetizer sounded really good too so I ordered that as well. My favorite part of the ddeok man du guk was the dumplings. They were so flavorful and I liked the wrapper/ filling ratio. The rest of the soup was okay; the flavor wasn't super complex and there wasn't much rice cake in it either. There was a surprisingly large amount of rice noodles in it though? Not sure if that's normal or if they just ran out of rice cake. The kimmari didn't have a lot flavor by itself but the sweet chili sauce that comes with it really elevates the dish.
