Came with my Korean coworkers and when we arrived there, we saw a bunch of other korean coworkers already eating there...so you know it has to be pretty good. There are a couple of Jja Jang Myeon in the area and this one is by far the best of them, and much much cheaper also than, say, Panda. The Jja Jang is a pretty good portion and has a ton of pork in it, so it was quite filling, esp when we ordered a shareable dish as well. The Korean fried chicken here is pretty good too. I've been here a few times and I have to say they make my absolute favorite restaurant Kimchi stew I've ever tried in the US. A decent kimchi stew is actually really easy to make, but an excellent one is much harder. The last time I had Macheko, I got their kimchi stew and I still think about it. I've also had their grilled mackerel (good) and fried chicken (really good). Their banchan is also really good. I tried an icy red bean dessert there... everyone at the table loved it, but I think it just wasn't my thing. They have alcohol and that's always a plus in my book. Food prices are very good and I've only had good service here. If you're in Ypsi, you don't need to drive to Ann Arbor to get good Korean food. If you're in AA, I don't know that you'd need to drive out to Ypsi for Macheko since there's plenty of good options already in AA. HOWEVER, Macheko's Korea fried chicken is really different than Seoul Street's. So if you love Korean fried chicken, I think it's worth a trip out to Macheko to check theirs out. Macheko and Seoul Street both make great fried chicken, they're just different. The landscape of Korean food across Ann Arbor is probably miles ahead of most surrounding towns, but still slightly sub-par. To some extent, I think owners understand that they can gouge their prices a little bit given the lack of options, and especially when compared to the quality of what they're offering. As far as things go, food isn't all too bad at Macheko. They have some more obscure dishes that are hard to come by at most Korean restaurants in the area, like Gamjatang (pork bone/potato stew), a rendition of Korean fried chicken, and Korean-Chinese dishes such as jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), all of which I personally enjoy. The environment is a little bit dim and the location is a bit secluded, but I don't mind these things all too much. The big question: does all of this justify the prices, which are upwards of $15-20 per person? I don't personally think so, but perhaps I'm stingier than most. read more

One of my favorite Korean restaurants in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area because of large variety (kbbq, hotpot, noodles, soups, appetizers) they offer!!! What we ordered: Gyochon Chicken (4/5): It's fried chicken wings in a soy sauce like sauce (? Haha does that even make sense). We got the snack size that comes in 5 pieces and there's also a dinner size that has 15 pieces. It was good but I wasn't a super huge fan of the sauce, maybe it's worth trying the spicy one! Jok bal (4/5): HUGE plate of pig hocks (pig feet? Haha that doesn't sound as appetizing, but there is so much collagen in this stuff it's supposed to be so good for your skin hahaha!!) that seem to be boiled/steamed and seasoned/marinated lightly. It comes with lettuce (which you can wrap the pig hocks like you would pork belly for kbbq), sliced jalapeño, garlic, fish sauce & gochu sauce, and a little bowl of pickled onions/garlic. It's all super tasty, but my taste buds weren't blown away haha. Would definitely recommend getting this with a larger group! (We only had two people xD) Seafood hotpot (5/5): A big pot of seafood (clams, muscles, shrimp, octopus, fish, etc), vegetables (including my favorite Asian mushrooms!!!), and udon (!!!!!! and some rice cake) cooked in spicy sauce! The spice level was perfect (I'd say I can only handle medium spice levels if not lower, but still love to have spicy food!), the seafood was fresh, and I loved that this had udon noodles instead of the ramen noodles! This is definitely enough for two (I think they give you rice, I'm not sure if our rice came with this or the pork hocks, but you can definitely also down the rice with the tasty spicy soup broth!), and you can also get an appetizer! On other occasions I've ordered: Kal bi tang (5/5): I've never had a bad beef short rib soup (given they have to be served in a hot stone bowl!!) and it's one of my go tos during winter! The soup was tasty, the beef was tender, there were vermicelli noodles on the broth, and it was all very satisfying! (I love to dip my beef in the sauce they give you!!) Spicy calamari bibimbap (4/5): Lots of people recommended this dish because you can't really find it in the other Korean restaurants around, but again I was "blown away" by this dish. It was really tasty, and I loved the idea of replacing the beef with the calamari. It's worth trying for sure! Oh yeaaa the side dishes are the best!! (Especially the fishcake!!!!!) Location: It's in a little plaza with some other restaurant/stores and has a relatively spacious parking lot in front of it. It wasn't hard to find (I mean thank god for google maps right? ) Atmosphere/restaurant size: Good for 1 - 10 (? I think they can make big tables for you?) people. I was craving Korean food so I picked Macheko Grill. Their large selection of food seems endless. Love that you have the option between regular entrees, Korean BBQ, or hotpot! Service was good. Server also checked up on us every so often. She gave us what we needed. She's great. For food, we got tteokbokki, jajangmyeon, bibimbap, and soy garlic wings. Tteokbokki was good! Jajangmyeon could use a bit more onion flavor to the sauce. I love that they are generous with the chunks of pork in the dish! Bibimbap was good! Would've been a plus if it was served in a sizzling stone bowl. Wings were delicious! The appetizer wings only comes with 4 wings. Kind of pricey. We also got 6 side dishes - all were good! This is a great spot if you're indecisive about which Korean dish you want. Great place to introduce your friends to Korean food - I came here for that reason too. Seriously, first things first, the food here is 5 stars and I'm super excited that a new Korean restaurant has opened on this side of town. It sure beats Hana on Michigan Avenue (that, while yummy, can run on the less-than-appetizing dining experience due to the odd ambience). The soon doobu soup is awesome! I'm absolutely in love with it. Soft tofu, pork, onions, zucchini bits, and it's even got an egg in it! Holy mama of a baby jesus, yes! Delicious. Plus, it reminds me of the breakfast I ate each morning when I lived at the Yonsei dorms in Seoul back in 2003. Mmmm... Spicy nostalgia. Also they have the best Kalbi tang in Washtenaw county. This compared to comparable places like Seoul Garden (a little light on flavor, big on MSG) and Hana (perfectly seasoned there, but tough meat and no egg). The Kalbi soup here has very tender rib meat as well as the lean stripped meat you'd find in a Yukgejjang, which was a nice surprise. I also love the purple rice here (stained from the added black rice). The sides leave something to be desired though, mostly kimchee varieties, and it all tasted very salty. Fried chicken wings and seafood pancake are yummy and a definite must try. A lot of other stuff looked good too, like the spicy squid, which I've yet to order here. Actually, it seems that a lot of delicious things are being served up from this kitchen, by the looks of other tables and seeing photos from yelp. One thing that strikes me as odd though is the sheer number of items listed on the menu. I'm always a little wary when a restaurant has this much breadth and coverage. For instance, I am curious about the shio ramen and chashu pork sides, but I'm a little reluctant with wasting a restaurant trip for a *maybe* dish. I decided to come here since we don't get any good Korean food outside of Hana here in Ypsilanti. This is a full blown Korean restaurant with hotpots and I believe grills for future use. It replaced Roy's Squeeze Inn. The resturant's design is pretty and with giant posters of Korean chefs staring at you makes for a unique experience. Onto the food, me and my friends decided to grab some food here since it's 5 minutes from my house. We were also craving korean food since it's been a while. We ordered a Gyochon chicken(soy sauce) and Brazing chicken(spicy) and it was some of the best fried chicken i've ever had. The Koreans have a unique way of frying their chicken twice then glazing it with their special sauces. One comrade ordered their tako yaki and it was good. I had a taste of another comrade's kimchi pancake and they make it on point. Finally, we had a military hot pot, for those of you don't know this came out of a necessity after the Korean War when the U.S would give koreans spam, ham, and other high calorie foods that the Koreans would add kimchi and other spices too. It was my first time having a hotpot and I would like to say: F**king delicious. Overall, it was a great experience, and I really hope this business thrives at this location. read more

Newbies beware as the large menu may be overwhelming which makes it really difficult to decide. The staff is constantly on their feet so it is very easy to be forgotten or ignored. My party of 3 men with appetites shared the seafood pancake, jja jang myeon, seafood bi bim bop, and a hotpot and we were stuffed. Granted, the meal cost us about $28 each but the quality was definitely on point. In town, plenty of parking, and new Korean food spot = I am in loooovvveee@@@! The dining room is large, with flat screens showing Korean music videos. I was alone but sat at an large grill table. I ordered the spicy chicken and spicy rice cake. I clearly didn't think this through enough. Spicy chicken and shrimp is exactly as you would expect. Beautifully tasty pieces of dark meat and shrimp with sparse veggies, piled high in a glistening red hot sauce. Enough for 2-3 people. The spicy rice cakes were perfect. Chewy and good portion. I think I drank two pitchers of water to cool my mouth, but loved every minute of it. If you are hot-heat and glutton for punishment by hot sauce, you have to check this out. Came here after seeing all of the good yelp reviews - we didn't come for KBBQ although a lot of people in the restaurant were doing that! So this review only pertains to what we ate on the menu. The banchan was standard - only 4 dishes, but they were tasty! They will ask if you want refills if you finish, but they might forget to actually bring the refills... Seafood sundubu jigae - not my favorite. There was a lot of seafood, but the broth just tasted off and strong in a not pleasant way. In general, I prefer beef sundubu, but they wouldn't make the substitution :( Their standard level of spicy is HOT here! So consider asking it for less spicy if you don't like super spicy. Japchae - super delicious! This and the banchan were the happy parts of the meal - it was plentiful for the price and had a lot of beef and veggies with the noodles. I would come back just to eat this. Environment - pretty typical for an asian restaurant, it's a little bit rundown, but overall clean. Service could use some work, but maybe that's because we can't speak Korean. We'll be back to try more things/eat the japchae :) read more

Super solid Korean food! Their Spicy Calamari Bibimbap is the best bibimbap I've had in Michigan - the calamari was not tough or chewy, and there was tons of flavor. Their seafood pancake (appetizer size) was pretty disappointing, sadly. Probably a 2.5/10 - it was cold, and didn't contain much seafood at all. Just tasted doughy, really. Took 1 star off because of the seafood pancake, and also because of the price - their dishes are pretty pricey! $16 for the calamari bibimbap, and $7 or $9 for their sad seafood pancake. Id' come back for more bibimbap, and maybe some soondubu, but it'd be a treat instead of a regular visit. read more

First impression walking in wasn't that great. A table that was already sitting wanted to move because their table was by the door and it was too cold. She asked if we wanted to sit there.. Why would we if the other guests were complaining about the cold. They then wanted to seat a party of three at a two person table... Uh no.. They ended up seating us at the back where the table only had two chairs, she walked off and didn't come back. Located next to an off again, on again club, my wife and I weren't quite sure what to make of this place. AMBIANCE- the place is relatively new, and has a darker (not pitch black) setting to it. A fair amount of seating, definitely more of a casual dining joint than trendy/high class. SERVICE- our server was very friendly and attentive (as we were one of just 4-6 parties). Definitely able to navigate the menu, and answer our questions. MENU- All you Korean favorites here- Korean bbq, hot pot, kalbi, kim chi, etc... If you're craving something Korean, this place is likely to have it. FOOD- so maybe (hopefully) this has changed, but when my wife and I first came here, we were mad excited to get Korean bbq, only to find out that they do not have the ventilation/license required to allow you to cook at your table. This experience was taken for us, and with no alternatives, we decided to still get korean bbq. The banchan was decent, as was the meal itself, but I couldn't help feeling a bit cheated. Typically I don't care for places you cook your own food (like Mongolian bbq, etc...), but this is one of the few instances I do like cooking for myself, and it just wasn't there. This time around, they brought the salad like always. About halfway through my salad, I find a wet, soggy Lysol wipe. I let the server know, and all they did was bring a new salad. No apology. So many to discover in their seafood hotpot - octopus, clams, fish, crab, tofu, radish, cabbage, rice cake and udon, but it is very spicy. The waitress helps to stir and tells when to eat. There are so many Korean restaurants in Ann Arbor, and each new one that I go to always seems to impress me even again. Macheko offers both BBQ and regular, and we decided to come for a regular lunch on a Sunday. The restaurant was empty, and we had showed up right when they opened, but the service was still friendly and quick. The menu seems pretty traditional, with all the noodles, soups, and snacks you would imagine! They also have some hot pot and entree options. We started off with the kimchi pancake, which was so crispy yet fluffy, and full of big pieces of seafood, onions, and green onions. The kimchi and dipping sauce had a nice kick and it's a great change from traditional seafood pancakes. I ordered the seafood soon du bu, which came out boiling hot as always. The bowl of rice wasn't quite full, which kind of bothered me, but it was only a little bit so I forgave them. It was full of soft, silky tofu, and only a little bit of seafood, which was kind of disappointing. There were maybe 3 clams, one shrimp, a little octopus, and that's it. Quite the "seafood" stew. The heat was definitely present but not too much that I was reaching for water after every bite. I definitely enjoyed it and would put it with or slightly above Rich J.C. Again, the service was extremely attentive and polite! The banchan to start were all fresh and tasty! The prices are a liitle bit expensive, but not unreasonable. I had one of the most authentic Korean food I had in Michigan here. Taste just like home. However, it is the most expensive korean food I had in Michigan. For me, it's not worth it. The Champon, pretty good. Probably one of the best Champon I had in Michigan, but to be honest that is not so hard to beat. The ddeokbokki was meh, not worth it. You can make the same amount they give you for a third of the price and probably taste better. However, it is so far the best ddeokbokki I had in Ann Arbor, not much of an accomplishment tbh. This is easily the best meal I've had since moving to Michigan. The takoyaki was competitive with the takoyaki I had in Tokyo, the bibimbap was delicious and seemed to use high quality beef, and the chicken wings were among the tastiest wings I've ever had. I live 15 minutes away, but I would not hesitate to drive back. For COVID precautions, the takeout system was all seamless and the food was ready and on time. I've been looking for a good Korean place in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area since my old favorite apparently has been going a bit downhill according to Yelp reviews. My mom and I decided to check out Macheko today and we were NOT disappointed. Great deals on the lunch specials. I got Soon Dubu and she got the Mackerel Lunch Combo. Was pleasantly surprised to find that on Mondays soups come with free dumplings. The soon dubu was one of the best I've ever had, and I always order it at Korean restaurants because it's my favorite dish! No complaints there. Tea was also good and stronger than some other restaurants I've been to which was great. Ladies working there were super nice.
