Visiting Denver on a short business trip as my friends were looking for a place to eat and grab a drink. It was around 8:30 pm and after walking by extremely busy establishments. We decided to go a bit off the beaten path and try this place out. It wasn't dead but also not overly crowded. Just the type of place I was looking for. A few flights of stairs and you are led into an awesomely decorated restaurant/bar top area. Outside seating is also available with no stairs. We decided to pass the host table as we wanted to sit at the bar. We were greeted by a friendly bar tender who (without asking) handed us an ice cold glass of water. Followed by menus as we were asked about food. One side of the menu is catered to all the drinks they serve and the other is about the food. I asked for a quesadilla de arrachera which I normally get in a flour tortilla. However, our bartender advised us that everything is home made so I opted for a corn tortilla. My friends got tacos. We proceeded to order drinks Spicy Skinny Margarita for me that had spicy jalapenos on the bottom with a tajin rim. My friends got beers from the tap. My drink was perfectly made to my taste. I've learned to ask for the skinny as they skip the simple syrup. Less calories, less sweet so I can enjoy the tequila and spice. Our food came out pretty quick. I forgot to take a picture of my food because I quickly dug in and ended up devouring that delicious quesadilla. The home made corn tortilla was definitely the way to go. I was worried it would be small but it wasn't. It was served with some delicious shishito peppers that must have been marinated in lemon and then salted. I later saw another party order them as an appetizer. If you like spicy and need a salty snack. Then you should try them. My friend was wearing a jersey without an undershirt and wasn't allowed into some of the nightclub-like establishments. So he was interested in buying a shirt here. Pretty cool looking shirt of a skeleton holding machetes. They ended up not having his size. I took a few pictures of cool decorations I saw while heading to the restroom. My overall experience of Machete Tequila and Tacos was a pleasant one. I definitely want to come back to eat more delicious food, try a few new drinks and just enjoy the atmosphere. read more

This place is interesting to say the least. It's right across from Union Station, so I imagine it's always packed. The place is dark and mysterious for sure, with features of Mexican style art skeletons and statues around the place. They also played very trendy hip hop music (not sure if that is every night) so it is very loud. I would say leave the kiddos at home for this place. We were seated on the right side of the restaurant near the bar and a television. The menu is full of single tacos arranging from $4-$5 dollars each. Everything is mostly al la cart on the menu with an extensive list of tequila, margaritas and wine. My wife and I shared the margarita with the pineapple and coconut tequila. It was so refreshing and good! We ordered a side of rice, beans, the cheese fondu, chips with four salsas (orange and green were bomb!) and one taco for my wife to try. The food is good for the most part. The beans lacked some flavor and the rice is more on the Spanish side than true Mexican rice, and the tortillas are tiny so be aware. This is one of my favorite taco spots in town. There are an abundance of offerings, all are delicious. My favorites are: campechano, tinga, al pastor, and the pescado. The margaritas are also excellent and strong. The chips and salsa, guacamole, queso offerings are also tasty and I highly recommend. You really can't go wrong with the options here. Last time I was there i had the blood orange one. The decor and ambiance is cool but it can get super loud there at night. I was having to shout to be heard. I'm assuming it's quieter during the day than when we were there at night. It gets extremely busy there and service is sometimes slow, so dedicate a decent chunk of time and don't arrive too hangry, and order some chips and salsa. The wait is WORTH IT though. read more

Came with a group of about 6, the host was very blunt to us and was quite honestly a bit rude unfortunately. This doesn't reflect on our server's performance though, he was amazing. The view of Union Station from the patio was gorgeous as well. I also love the interior decorations at this location. The only dissapointing thing was that our water carafe was really dirty on the inside. It looked like it hadn't gone through the dishwasher properly and still had old mushy food all over it :(( I would bring people here/come back, but would hope for a much better experience! read more

Definitely come here if you want to try a variety of tacos. The portion sizes are pretty decent. I ordered two Al Pastor and two margaritas. My bill came up to $50 including tip. I went with a girlfriend on a Saturday night and the restaurant was full not overcrowded, and they played really good music. It was a complete vibe and there are other restaurants and bars nearby, if you don't want the night to end. read more

The hubs and I met up with friends the other weekend. We ended up with the private room off the kitchen all to ourselves which was awesome. Our friends got there before us so ordered the queso fundido. I don't eat pork so picked around the chorizo and this was still an awesome queso. I got two chicken rostizado tacos and the de le milpa vegetarian taco. The chicken was a little dry but still had good flavor. The star of the show was the vegetarian taco and I wish I had gotten two. There was the perfect amount of spice and the flavor was outstanding. They also carry Pacifico on tap which is hard to find and the perfect way to wash down the delicious food. Service was fast and friendly! read more

We came to Machete Tequila & Tacos for dinner, and it did not disappoint. Overall, the tacos were solid, and this seemed to be the place for late night tequila draaanks on a Saturday night. My friend and I were starving by the time we arrived to Machete Tequila & Tacos, so there was no way we were gonna wait half an hour for a table to open up in the dining area. Fortunately, we found two seats at the bar and plopped ourselves down. The space is open and dark, and looks more like a place to drink than for food. But the food was pretty darn good. The menu mainly consist of different tacos with some entrees and sides. Everything is served a la carte. My friend and I started with margs, mine was the skinny margarita, and we shared chips and salsas and shishito peppers before our entrees. Both starters were super good and loved the different salsas, some spicier than others with the housemade chips. The grilled shishito peppers came with a good aioli, too. For my entree I ordered three tacos: al pastor, fish and Colorado braised lamb. I was most excited to try the Colorado lamb, which turned out to be my least favorite. The taste of the lamb was very gamey, and hardly tasted the avocado puree with, which I think would've helped break down that gamey taste. The al pastor wasn't bad yet I've had a lot better elsewhere, as the texture of the pork was a tad stiff. Gotta love the pineapple topping though! My favorite, by far, was the fish. It was sooo good and would recommend trying this taco. I especially love that the fish taco was not deep fried, as the tilapia was grilled with peppers on top on a squid ink tortilla. It was so flavorful that I wish I ordered all fish tacos! Get fishy! We enjoyed our time at Machete. Service was a little spotty due to how busy the place was. But the food was solid and drinks were heavy on the tequila. It's a fun spot to check out right across from Union Station. read more

I've been really impressed at every visit here. The tacos have all been flavorful, filling, and prepared well. I'm not even sure all the varieties I've tried: if I could, I'd just make my order "surprise me," but sharing the huge platter with a group has almost the same result. The tequila drinks elevate what a margarita can be from the citrusy hummingbird water seen so often, without getting too esoteric. The waiters are friendly and really know about their food and drink. And the tablet ordering system they use make it so that your drinks & simple apps start coming out before the waiter has even gone back inside, which seems like magic. There's lots of options to choose from on the menu, but my favorite go-to is Machete Margarita and a camaron taco or 5 haha. I still love this place. I've been to Union station Machete just a *few* times since my last review. The veggie tacos are great - I love the de la milpa and el jardin. I like that there are options too for veggie tacos, not just one typical one like at most places. The blood orange margarita didn't have the strongest flavor but was still enjoyable. The chips and salsa (while not complimentary, I highly recommend ordering them) are still great. They're homemade chips and thick and crispy; the 4 salsas are all really unique - some are spicy, others are fire-roasted, all are delicious (try topping your taco with one!). COVID related - all staff wore masks and were respectful. We sat outside, which is now spilling into a blocked-off section on the street (tables/chairs may not be level, but it's worth it to sit outside). There are individual, powerful heaters at each table - I almost could have taken my coat off last night (and it was chilly out)! Love that Machete is taking covid precautions seriously and have outdoor seating and heaters. read more

This one was kind-of a toss up. It definitely wasn't a bad meal, but it just didn't hit like I wanted it to. We were looking for eats before we had to get ready for an evening wedding so we came here for lunch. We snagged by the window, ordered a margarita and started looking over the menu. The menu is a shit-show of tiny print and you're comparing tacos to see which ones have what on them. The we thought about splitting the 12 taco platter, but there are so many exclusions that you can't get most of the tacos you want to try. We both ended up doing 4 tacos each which was probably one too many. If I remember correctly, I had the campechano (sirloin), barbacoa (lamb shank), langosta (lobster), and the costilla (pork rib). Ranging anywhere from $5 up to MP for the lobster (which I think was $9 that day) I expected these tacos to be out of this world. They were all decent but nothing really wowed me. The lobster served on a squid ink shell was nice and probably the most memorable of the bunch, but at that price we could have shared one just to try it. Then our server was just all over the place. He would be out of sight for 15+ mins and then come to our section and not check in. Considering it was lunch time, they were very leisurely about taking orders and getting checks. But then the food came out so fast I thought there was no way it could be ours. All in all, it was just an okay experience and compared to other spots we found on our trip, I would probably skip machete next time. read more

First and foremost, this place is not bad.. it's simply the value for money that I just can't justify. The menu is very limited, so street tacos are pretty much your only option. Last week our bill for 2 people... 3 tacos and 2 margaritas each, with tip was $116 and I still can not wrap my head around that... I personally would have much rather have had a nice steak dinner than tacos for that price if that makes any sense? The service was great, the food was wonderful and the street seating for distancing was nice and planned out but you have to be prepared to drop some cash if your gonna have a drink or 2. The four margaritas were $52.00 of our bill and sadly we left feeling nothing from the drinks. The tacos range from $4.30-$5.95 a piece and are stuffed so they are pretty filling. Again, I will state the food was great, I just was not prepared for a weekday night taco dinner costing that much so note to self! read more

It's tacos (and tequila and all other food stuff). It was good to try but in my humble opinion, not stand out. A group of us (7 all together) decided to go the route of the 14 tacos for $44. Good deal that you can mix and match to your liking (some premium tacos come with an up charge). The shredded chicken tacos (Pollo Rostizado) came dry but the Campechano (steak) was very flavorful. I expected the avocado salsa to be diced avocado but instead its more like a dressing (sour cream based maybe?) It was nice to try a variety this way. I enjoyed the sangria and I was not disappointed. The sweet start followed by the cinnamon finish was a nice and unique touch. Definitely try this! So why only 3 stars? The ladies room was a mess and not well stocked (no Tp or paper towels), our dining plates were dirty and the floor under our table was littered with chips and whatever..... I realize it was getting to the dinner time but still.....cleanliness projects a lot about a place. read more

Want a solid margarita? Look no further. I highly recommend the Cadillac margarita. Tacos? They are pretty darn good. I love the fish tacos. (Pescado) Served on squid ink tortilla. SO GOOD. This isn't your typical Mexican restaurant. Everything is decorated in honor of Day of The Dead. The Mother Mary candles adorn the tables, and the wooden floors give it that authentic feel. This is a great place for a great drink, some chips and salsa (you do have to pay extra to get them, and come with 4 sauces) and a couple small tacos for a light meal, a good lunch, or a snack to start of the evening. read more

Had a great meal at Machete, I would definitely recommend! My husband and I showed up during happy hour and was pleasantly surprised to find $3 tacos waiting and $3 off all margaritas. The chips and salsa aren't free but worth the 4 types of salsa they give you. Sour cream was free and that's great. We ordered to arrachera and tinga tacos and they tinga was really really good! 3.5/5. I've been here a few times and the langosta taco might just be one of the greatest things I have ever eaten! The smoked avocado complements the lobster tail in a magical way. I have also had the pollo rostizado quesadilla and both types of chicken tacos, which have all been tasty as well. I would recommend coming here for food, even though some of the prices are a little inflated (especially the guacamole, which is not nearly worth the price). My main qualm with Machete really comes down to their drinks. The prices are pretty whacky in my opinion. I've gotten margs from nearby, lower-scale restaurants for 1/3-1/2 of the price that are much stronger, larger, and have better flavor. For a $12 basic marg at Machete, you essentially get a glass full of ice. I've had the Machete, the Blood Orange, and Mezcal margs, and each time, the glass has been overflowing with ice and, while tasty, the glass contains only 3-4 sips of the actual drink. If you're cool with paying $3 per sip of watered down marg, go for it! Machete has some really great COVID-19 precautions in place, with a bunch of outdoor seating and digital menus accessible by QR codes. The staff is always quick and attentive as well. I'll for sure be back for the lobster tacos, but won't be back for drinks. read more

I was in Denver for the weekend and jonesing for some tacos. This place was right by the hotel and looked promising. The interior is funky cool with angel masks all over the way. Kind of dark and a little loud. Definitely a popular place. We started off with the queso fundido appetizer. Tons of hot, gooey delicious cheese, hot soft tortillas and tortilla chips. So much cheese we couldn't even finish it all. For our entrees, my wife got the chili relleno with rice and beans. I snagged a bite or too. Outstanding! Had a little bit of heat, but not over-powering. I had a plate of tacos. I picked the al pastor (my fave go to), one with lamb meat and another pork rib meat. All three were juicy and flavorful and fantastic. I went with the Machete Margarita to wash it all down. Excellent drink. Strong, but not overdone at all. Ordering some tacos to go: 1) Arrachera (hangar steak) 2) Camaron (shrimp) and 3) Costilla (pork rib). Comes in a sustainable paper box, but also unsustainable plastic bag lol. Took a bite of each before we left for home, and they're pretty good! Love that all 3 has different types of corn tortillas, which probably doesn't affect taste so much, but it looks great. For the hangar steak, there are lots of raw onions so if you're not fond of that you can probably ask them to not add that. Otherwise the meat is well seasoned and juicy. The pork rib kind of has a gamey aftertaste and has parts of the rib/muscle there, so careful where you bite. The shrimp is spicy (but not too spicy) and large pieces, seasoned well. Lots of tomatoes on top as well. Love the squid ink shell. We were scarred before eating at another Denver Taco House, but this one was recommended to us. We came here for dinner on Sunday night around 7 pm. It was pretty busy for a Sunday night so we had a 20 minute wait before we got our drinks, but the host warned us of this so we didn't mind. We sat outside and it was a bit chilly but had nice views. There's plenty of seating outside. I ordered the shrimp taco, chicken with crispy potatoes taco, and Al pastor taco. I also ordered the Kona margarita. The tacos had a decent amount of meat in it besides the shrimp taco. The shrimp taco only had 2 pieces of shrimp in it. My boyfriend ordered the quesabirria taco, a side of rice, and we also got the chips, guacamole, and salsa for an appetizer. The salsas and guacamole were good and I liked the tortilla chips that came with it. They were a bit thicker and could hold the salsas and guacamole without breaking as you're dipping it. We both agreed that the food tasted mediocre. It seems like their main focus is their tequilas and drinks. Maybe this place is geared towards people who like more "hipster" food and photo ops, and not authentic tasting, good quality food with good service. We also both agreed that we'd probably never be back. Bummer! read more

We were on a timeline for tickets and tried to get ramen but the wait was going to be too long for our (timed entry) plans. Happened to look up and see this place. It looked like it had character and who doesn't like a taco and margarita before the fun begins? Machete turned out to be much more than that, drinks were creative and interesting, service was outstanding and the food, oh my gosh the food. Everything was flavor packed, from the vegetarian taco to my friend's chile rellenos. Ambience was chill with great music, a little dia de los muertos theme, kind of church tavern-ish if you're ever in Tacoma. It was a bit pricey ($70-ish after tax and tip for 2 margaritas, 2 tacos, and a chile rellenos) or I would give it 5 stars. First off this place has great tequila options. A lot of additive free tequila's at a good price point. The bartenders are not very knowledgeable in what these tequilas are. The do have large pours which is great. The food on the other hand we just mediocre. No complimentary chips in. Salsas, which is unheard of in most Mexican restaurants. The tacos are $6-$8 each, a little expensive for a street taco. The queso fundido is good but the chips are so so. This hip taco restaurant is located close to Coors Field and not too far from Mile High. They serve a la carte street tacos and some specialties. There were 4 of us after the Rockies last game for the season, and all of us enjoyed margaritas and tacos. It's slightly noisy, ever so slightly snobby, but your server will make you feel appreciated once you're in! There are high top tables, dining tables, and a bar for watching sports. The food is great quality and very filling. They serve a skinny margarita which I love in addition to many other margaritas and drinks. It's a little noisy, but you like that during or after a game, right? There is pay parking nearby, close to light rail Union Station. Food pics attached...we will be back! read more
