I used to frequent Ba-Le all the time when they had more locations. Now, they're harder to find. I'm happy that they still have this one at Kamehameha Shopping Center. I love Vietnamese steamed pork (cha lua). Not too many places have it, but luckily for me they did at this location. I got it in my banh mi $12.95. I also got a turkey banh mi $11.95 and a chicken spring roll $2 with sauce $0.25. Their banh mis are excellent. The French bread is toasted to a crisp and filled with daikon, carrot, cucumber, cilantro, mayo and soy sauce. You get your choice of protein with it. The only problem I had with it was that it was mostly filled with veggies and not enough protein. If you're not a banh mi person, they also sell plate lunches such as garlic chicken and short ribs. Went there for dinner to grab a lite bite, I ordered a sandwich combination and the bread was not crispy on the outside and fluffy and chewy in the inside. They had lots of filling with slices of meat and pickled vegetables which was okay, nothing like the original Bale I used to visit in Chinatown when they first opened. Order their shrimp summer rolls and when I opened the container, one of the rolls where cracked and tasted a little dry. They need to control it's moisture because it felt like they left them out in dry air or stored them in the fridge which draws out moisture, causing the paper to shrink and crack. I'm into eating bahn mi sandwiches only kind I like is BBQ chicken. So since my husband was un Tines supermarket shopping for groceries I went next door to order our lunch. He wanted ham on croissant and I ordered my BBQ chicken The service was friendly the cashier asked what else I wanted and I said let me have 2 banana lumpias, banana tapioca, and the original lavish. Well of all that I paid close to 60.00. What for 2 sandwiches and the extras. Now I know prices is high everywhere but what the heck if you like eat it buy um. Came home and they forgot my banana lumpia. Oh well I wasnt going back for just 2 pieces. Now to our sandwiches my husband ham sandwich croissant was full of vegetables like carrots daikon and small slices of cucumbers. The croissant seems to be very flaky and soggy on the bottom maybe because of the mayonnaise they put on the bottom or the vegetables wasnt strained enough and still with the liquid inside. Now the ham was good just like thinly sliced ham from the deli. Other than that was good he said. Mines was the same flaky soggy on the bottom of the croissant but the chicken wasnt warm it was cold and tasted with lots of garlic mixed in their shoyu marinade. I said was ok. Today I decided to grab some Banh-mi sandwiches for lunch for my wife. This particular Ba-Le is located in the Kamehameha Shopping Center right next door to Time's supermarket. I was very disappointed my wife pointed out there was only 2-3 thin slices of cold cut in the sandwich. Most places packed the meat and veggies. The girl who was working today was extremely rude. When I walked in she was on her phone her back was facing me & she yelled over her shoulder at me "Whenever you're ready to order" in the most condescending voice as if I disturbed her conversation with whoever she was on the phone with. I stood there in shock. As we were looking at the menu to decide what to order she's slamming things around. Her back is still facing me at the counter. So I put in my order she turns around then starts fidgeting with the register as if she's irritated huffing and puffing she then asks me "Card or Cash" I say card she then points at the sign that says there's a fee if using a card. Isn't that illegal? I receive my food she slides it on the glass and says THANK YOU in a sassy voice! Now this is the part that pissed me off the most cause I paid $44.67 for 2 sandwiches & 4 cold ass spring rolls. I went there today to pick up food while working my second job and when I walked in I noticed they had a sign at their register that they are charging 3.75% on every credit or debit transaction. That's SUPER illegal so I tried to nicely explain that to them. Not only were they dismissive of what I was telling them, they were very combative. I would recommend staying away from this location. Today, my husband and I came here w/our 5 year old daughter to get some lunch. My daughter is severely autistic. So when we were ready to place our order, my daughter accidentally hit the glass display case. As we were correcting her, the two staff that were working behind the counter was yelling at my daughter. So I've told them "don't you yell at my daughter. She's autistic". Instead of trying to understand and diffuse the situation, they just started arguing with me and making the situation more worse. Then they asked us to leave. My thought is 'Is this how you really handle customers who has kids with Autism?" I wished they could have handled the situation better than ignoring the fact that I said she's autistic. For a family oriented business, they didn't treat us very well. I appreciate their chicken eggrolls since most places make it with pork, but man are they pricey. They charge per eggroll so that's likely why, we got ten of them. Then I got two types of pho as well. Tell me why this cost $70?! $20+ for pho is wild. The pho was good but not mind blowing. It was a regular amount of noodles and veggies. You definitely don't get an abundance of food. If we hadn't gone here specifically for chicken eggrolls I would not have gotten the overpriced pho. I used to love coming to bale for a bahn mi. The quality just declined here. First of all, I get inflation is happening the sandwiches were like 12+ -15 bucks. I still bought a sandwich and second of all, the bread wasn't toasted. It wasn't the best. I'm used to having a crunch when I bite into the baguette there was none and the meat was lacking. I went there years ago and was disappointed in my sandwich back then because there bread was not fresh. So, I am in the mood again for a ban mi and returned to this same Bale. My first bite I couldn't taste the tuna, only the daikon. I looked inside and saw very little tuna, there was more pickled veggies than tuna. Sad to write this review. We've been a long time and loyal customer to this establishment. First of all the worker was so unfriendly, that was the first that I've experienced there. They are always friendly. We ordered 4 sandwiches and took it home to eat. The sandwich seemed different. I had my regular, chicken on french bread. The bread seemed so cold and soft like it came right out of the refrigerator. When I finally asked my other family members if something was different we realized the bread wasn't toasted. It was so pale and mushy. The fillings tasted different also. The daikon had a different taste. The filling was very scarce. We called and asked if they no longer toast the bread, the lady said that you have to ask for it to be extra crispy. In all my years (20+years) I've never had to ask that! After a great work out at the gym, i went to ba-le for lunch. I love their summer rolls here! Its nice and light lunch type of day. They have tofu and shrimp available. I'm a person who also has that "my eyes are bigger than my stomach" feel. So i got some lavosh, tea cookies, both tofu and shrimp summer rolls, and their sweet potato tapioca. Girllll their rolls are great. The wrapping skills are there! I do wish that they'd have some pickled radish and carrots or some mint in them though. Overall, i enjoyed my experience here. The staff are very friendly and they have more selection on food such as their banh mi, their pho, vermicelli selection. The sweet potato tapioca was very nice! That cold consistency and the flavor of sweet potato was just light and delicious. I also ended up sneaking a tea cookie during my drive home. I love them. But they could have been a little more generous with the meat. The bread was hot and fresh. The summer rolls I'd give 8/10. The sauce was GREAT. 1 star off because of the lack of ambience and customer service. They don't really greet you or talk to you or anything. But would still come back for another Banh mi. This is where my love for Bahn Mi started years ago, at Ba-Le, the shop that started making these simple, yet tasty sandwiches. My go-to, all time favorite is the combination, which has pate in it. It just adds this creamy texture, and a wonderful, full flavor. They add a fair amount of meat, and they pack in the picked vegetables, and top with fresh Chinese parsley. Get the French bread, and get it toasted. Slightly crisp outside, but a nice chew v on the inside. Be warned though, these sandwiches are so good, you'll be amazed that you can easily eat the whole thing. But eat over the paper wrapper, because you're going to drop a lot of crumbs! They also make a variety of Vietnamese food, the spring roll vermicelli is particularly refreshing! But they have a large menu on the wall with pictures for reference, and everything looks good.
