Walking into this restaurant, the view was amazing! We sat upstairs right in front of the ocean. We had brunch and ordered a breakfast burrito, omelettes, a cheeseburger and fries, pancakes, and an avocado toast. Everything we ordered was delicious! My son loved his juicy cheeseburger, the burrito had so much filling with eggs and meat, and the omelettes were soft and tasty. Service was quick and our waiter was great! Upon getting there, we were told that if we wanted the balcony, we had to wait a little bit more so we did. After waiting, we finally was seated by the balcony and it had the perfect view. Our server Sterling is the best!!! He kept checking up on us and would answer all our questions about the menu. I had to ask him a few times about what the other people around us are having since they look so good. For appetizers, we got the crab and macadamia nut wonton. You can taste the crab in it. For our main entrees, I was torn about what to get. I didnt want to get something and not be able to finish it since Ive seen other tables ans the portion is big. Well I ended up getting another appetizer. This time got the honey nut mac shrimp and gotten some carbs to go with it (truffle parmesan fingerlong potatoes). Both were good. I was surprised by the amount of shrimp that I got. My partner got the filet steak Kiana (medium). He had me taste his and wished I ordered it. The meat was so tender and moist that it melts in your mouth. For dessert, we got the Hula Pie and this is a winner!!! Good thing they have these at Duke's which is in Malibu (CA). They open at 7 and while lots of people were going to dukes below, hula grill was more quiet and more intimate at first! I got the strawberry mocha waffles were so good! I would definitely get them again if I find myself in Waikiki. Just the right amount of sweet and honey that no syrup is needed. My boyfriend got the two ka lei local eggs with spam and said it was really good. Also tried the tutus moonshine and I loved the presentation, it was really cute. I came here specifically because I had seen in a review that someone was able to get a drink inside a hollowed-out pineapple, and my friend visiting the island was looking for a drink in a pineapple. I should have called ahead of time to find out, but I didn't, and that's on me, but they don't do drinks in pineapples any more (if they ever really did). We ended up getting a piece of hula pie to share with the table instead. It was delicious as always, plenty to share among three people, and I love that it's served on its own special plate with special sporks that say hula pie on them. It was pretty sunny and hot that day and there are no umbrellas on the patio, so good thing I was wearing sunscreen or I'd fry. Service was prompt although as it got busier it got a little slower. We ended up coming here three times during our trip because of the famous Hula Pie! On our first visit, we had a reservation and stayed for dinner. We tried the steak and the corn chowder. I ordered my steak medium well, but part of it could've been cooked a little more to my liking. Even so, it still tasted really good. Our server was also excellent and very friendly throughout the meal. For our other two visits, we sat in the open bar area since we didn't want to wait for a table. Without a reservation, the wait can easily be over an hour to an hour and a half. The nice thing is that you can still order from the full menu while sitting at the bar. The only downside was that there wasn't much airflow in that area, so it got pretty warm while we were sitting there. The Hula Pie is definitely a must-try! It's not overly sweet and doesn't melt too quickly either. You really can't go wrong ordering it. read more

Had late dinner at hula grill last night .. the view is amazing! We sat on the veranda facing the ocean. Our server was awesome! He was very attentive and super helpful and friendly with everything we needed. We shared the steak plate that came topped with mushrooms and mash potatoes. And we ordered a side of their cream corn. The steak was nicely grilled to a medium rare perfection. The mash potatoes and mushrooms paired well with the steak.. the corn was a little bland I felt like without a crunch to them also. I probably won't order that again.. corn is my weakness so I was a little sadden by that dish. For dessert we shared a hula pie and omg do not pass on that! Mahalo for Pi day!!!! And for managing to stay open despite closing half the restaurant (ocean view seating was exposed to very high winds)! Duke's had the longest line, so while in that line, one of the crew ran up the stairs, returning in a few minutes to say, "they are clearing a table right now for us"! Our group of 7 had a great table in the "lobby" across the restrooms and host reception, with a view of the Blue Note entrance. The happy hour menu "Early Bites" has regular priced items as well as appetizers which are only available during happy hour, which ends at six pm. Beverages are at happy hour prices. Everyone was sure to indulge in a famous mac nut topped Hula Pie, and some got to enjoy the mint chocolate chip Hula Pie (limited edition, specially made for St Paddy's) - and for only $3.14, that was a no brainer!). One had the tempura/kalbi taco combo, two shared a lobster roll, another two shared the burger, and of course the men had their own meal and finished them off with no problem! We were so hungry though, that I only got a peek at two of the dishes. (The lobster roll is double in size, the staff kindly sliced and served it to us in separate portions, or we would have made a mess of it ourselves, ha ha!). The reception staff, food, and wait service were all great! We loved our kama'aina trip to Waikiki, which, for locals, is sometimes a rarity! The only downside - we called to ask where best to park and were told they validated at the Ross' parking lot, and were given the lot name to plug into Maps. On checkout, though, we were told an entirely different parking lot name;( and therefore "ran" through Ross' with melting Hula Pie to quickly make a purchase (validated up to two hours with a $10 purchase) and avoid a big parking lot fee. We managed to do that and only had to pay $4, thank goodness! Good thing we love Ross', too, LOL. read more

It was busy for dinner. We came for the Pi Day special. Hula pie for $3.14 a slice. Regular vanilla or mint flavor Rosalani ice cream. We had seafood roll sandwich; 2 tacos - shrimp tempura and chicken with kalbi sauce. I liked the shrimp tempura the chicken was dry. I was told the seafood roll was good and the hamburger and fish and chips were also good. The slices were a bit melted but still tasted yummy. The service was good and we also asked for kamaaina rate. We were glad to get a table but sad that the staff at Duke's downstairs gave us the wrong information for parking. My husband and I stopped in for a drink on the patio and a snack. We were greeted by a nice lady and she was an amazing server. She was attentive, upbeat and quick with all of her tables. We got some tiki drinks and I ordered some calamari. My husband was eyeing the hula pie and finally decided to get it. HOLY COW! It was a HUGE slice. Massive and delicious. The restaurant is right in front of the beach which makes for a great view. We ordered the prime rib and some Hawaiian classics for breakfast. Sad first night dinner.... We were so hyped coming here, because I wanted a macnut crusted fish, and the photos made everything look so good. Boy.... Were we disappointed. Got the salad, crab topped Mac nut fish, crab wontons and hula pie. We didn't understand why there were sauces on the table but soon realized they were a necessity. Crab wontons needed the vinaigrette sauce, due to lack of flavor. Salad was unexciting, and the fish was bland with barely any crab. That vinaigrette became the mvp to get us through. Wonderful views and service, and good food. We came in on a Thursday night around 5:30 and got a table near the bar. We were able to get some drinks from the early eats menu. After a bit we ordered our entrees. I got the Crab Topped Mahi Mahi. It's pricey ($51) but was good. My wife got the BBQ Chicken. It was tender, meaty, and tasty. We had dinner tonight at Hula Grill Waikiki. They are owned by the same folks that owns Duke's which is right down stairs from this restaurant. They were busy especially considering that it is Saturday night but we were able to scoop up a couple of great seats at the bar. Brandon the bartender too great care of us while handling the other patrons and servers seeking his attention. We started off with the localicious salad and it was dressed perfectly and it was delicious. They were kind enough to split it into two plates for us without asking, nice touch! I had the Chef's Burger and Fries and I really enjoyed it. It was cooked to a perfect medium temperature and the fries were hot and delicious. My Wife ordered the Ginger Pesto fresh catch and she really enjoyed it. The flavor profile was incredibly delicious. Hula Grill Waikiki delivers big on views, drinks, and a few standout dishes. The Hula Rita and lychee martini were excellent--balanced, refreshing, and easily the best drinks we had here. The Mai Tai, though heavily hyped, was just average in comparison. Food-wise, the crab wontons and Korean chicken wings alone make this place worth visiting--crispy, flavorful, and perfect to share. The real surprise was today's special: swordfish with lobster fried rice--absolutely amazing and deserving a permanent spot on the regular menu, not just a special. Came here excited to try this place since it was highly recommended, but unfortunately our experience started off poorly. We were told to sit at any open table, so we found a spot and settled in. A few minutes later, we were asked to leave the table because there was no host available to seat us. The instructions were unclear and the whole situation felt disorganized and unwelcoming. Dinner: The focaccia bread is good. Spongy and soft. The fish on my salad was a little rubbery and the taco shell on my poke tacos was not as flaky as I like it. Between Hula Grill, and its rivalry downstairs, I recommend Hula Grill for breakfast for quality not quantity. The food I find to taste way better. We have been twice now and have ordered the vegetable omelet, strawberry mochi waffles and banana nut pancakes. I think the banana nut pancakes have too much nuts, but that's ok. We also ordered the macadamia nut coffee with almond milk which I could have cared less about. Service was good both times. We will be back for the next few days during our stay. What is nice is that you have great seating views of the beach, and there's a big bar section which we didn't seat at. read more

It was a very disappointing experience. We came for dinner, but the restaurant was packed with large groups, and they were so loud that we could barely have a conversation at our table. Came in for Pi Day (3/14) and scored big with Hula Pies on sale for just $3.14 a slice - what a steal for that iconic macadamia nut ice cream, chocolate crust, hot fudge, and whipped cream combo. The classic Hula Pie was rich and indulgent as always, while the mint version added a cool, refreshing twist that perfectly balanced the sweetness. Mushroom fries stole the show too - crispy buttermilk-battered portobello slices with sriracha yuzu aioli for dipping, way better than regular fries and full of umami flavor. We dropped by for breakfast around 8am. The place was pretty so we got a great table for 2 overlooking the beach. The view was great, but be mindful of the birds flying around. My wife ordered the Kam'aina and my I ordered the Loco Moco. The Loco Moco was pretty good. It's not your regular ground beef patty but a collection of pulled pork, Portuguese sausage and beef. It was really good, but I would have been happy with a good ol' normal beef patty. The Kama'aina omlette was full of bacon and Portuguese sausage. Pretty good if you're a meat lover. Both dishes were good but not exactly mind blowing. The service was excellent. Our server checked on us regularly and refilled our waters constantly. First time at Hula Grill Waikiki was on Friday, September 8, 2023. Rachey told me that they brunched here earlier that week, but DJ and I went for a late dinner, booking reservations through OpenTable for two at 9:30 PM. Walking to Hula Grill from the Royal Hawaiian was about a short ten-minute walk. The relaxed beachside restaurant is located at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, on the second floor, above Duke's. The venue appeared to be clean and well kept on the night of our visit. Upon arrival, we had a short, few minutes' wait prior to being seated at a table in the lanai with oceanfront views. With music coming from downstairs at Duke's, the ambiance was pretty awesome. Aside from the beer that DJ ordered, below are what we had for dinner: LAVA FLOW ($15) - I never had a lava flow that I didn't love. This was yummy. HULA CAESAR ($12) - A nice bowl of fresh greens. BRAISED MUSHROOM RAVIOLI ($28) - DJ doesn't normally order ravioli dishes because he usually finds them to be skimpy in portions. This plate did not disappoint in the taste nor serving size categories. FILET STEAK KIANA ($54) - I was very pleased with Hula Grill's version of steak diane. So ono it was. Evan was our excellent server. He provided helpful information on the dishes and warm & friendly conversation. Definitely this was one of our best dining experiences during this trip to Oahu. For breakfast, I highly recommend the açaí bowls and crab Benedict. The fruit tastes sweet and matches perfectly with the included honey oats. The crab Benedict was packed with fresh crab and didn't have a lot of mayo and other condiments which I appreciated. Lunch you must get the lobster seafood roll (not loaded with sauce but with seafood which I love) and it was with a baguette type roll which was a fun change than the classic lobster roll. It was cooked perfectly at medium temperature, but the sauce made the lettuce and the bottom bun soggy. The fries were just OK. They didn't taste freshly cut and fried. I probably would've liked the meal a bit more if I ordered dessert to mellow it out, but I didn't have room.
