I want to give a shout-out to Derek, who works in the shop. I've brought my bike (an oldie I got on the cheap and don't want to put much money into) twice now, and Derek has stopped what he was doing both times to help me with an issue while I waited. He replaced the crank arm with one they had in the back the first time, doing a thorough and skillful job, and after I mentioned I had just bought the bike, he examined the bike and told me that it was safe to ride but listed the potential problems to look out for down the line. He never recommended serious (and expensive) work, since he understood without me really saying it that this is a patch-and-go operation. He spent at least ten minutes with me. He charged me $10. The second time, the front wheel was making a sound when I rode the bike, especially at higher speeds. He figured out very quickly that the axle wasn't spinning much at all (because the wheel probably needs replacing), and loosened it up. The problem was fixed, and the front wheel also spun more freely. He charged me $0. So, thanks again Derek. Keep doing what you do. read more

I have recently bought two bikes here, one for my nine-year-old daughter and one for myself. We aren't bike experts and managed to screw up my daughter's rear brakes within days. They repaired it for free. The customer service was okay. They didn't spend much time with either of us (we bought her bike a week before we bought mine), but they seem to have a great selection and are very knowledgeable. However, being an out-of-shape newbie, I felt a little like I was dismissed because I am not an avid biker. The location, of course, is fantastic. There is a nice area to test ride and they are right on the Lake Monona loop. read more

I dropped by today for my road bike tune-up. The front derailer was slightly misaligned and was causing the chain to come off when I tried to switch the gears. As soon as I popped in at the shop counter, and was immediately helped by one of the shop guys. 10 minutes later, the tune was done and the bike was ready to go. I also picked up a LED light and was all set for a smooth checkout. The cost of the derailer adjustment and the service was $15. I went for a short ride in the afternoon. My bike felt so good, and the derailer problem was gone. Yeay. read more

I stopped in to get my bike checked as I had been experiencing a bit of resistance and a creaking noise when I pedaled. One of their mechanics took the time to check out my bike and do a few tweaks to get my bike back running smoothly. He also took the time to explain what had gone wrong and what he did to fix it. To top it all off, he didn't charge for the quick repair. I really appreciate that he was so generous and helpful, and I definitely know where I will take my bike when I need a more substantial fix too!! read more

This is for their rentals. We reserved hybrids 6 months ago for a 7-day ride across Wisconsin. We arrived, took two hours ... took 45 minutes just to get anyone to help us. One staff member was beyond rude and said no lights, no flat kit, no computer, no locks came with the bike. We asked the manager and were supplied lights, locks and flat kit. I guess the staff member didn't want to be bothered with customers. Tires were bald, flat kit only contained one tire lever and tube stem came out while trying to put in air. We paid $100, just be aware they promise a lot over the phone, but barely deliver and deliver crappy customer service. Our friend paid $300 for a road bike and wasn't any better off... either ship your bike or go to another bike shop! read more

I came in for some simple service on a cruiser - the tech was really great and fixed my issue right away. He headed to the counter with me to let the cashier know what to charge for service; she didn't bother to look up or actually listen, and rang me up for the wrong amount. I tried to clarify and she became unnecessarily hostile and rude. I tried to offer to find the tech to ask him to come over and clarify the service charge for her, but she left her register and aggressively blew past me. When she returned, she claimed she couldn't find the tech and acted as if I was trying to put one over on her regarding the service charge. Her attitude was so shockingly uncivil that I decided to find the tech myself, ask him to please come to the register and tell the cashier himself what the agreed upon service charge was. He did this, and she remained on her worst behavior as she completed the transaction. I stood in absolute discomfort and bewilderment as I tried to lighten the mood as she ignored my words and returned them with glaring silence. Generally, I shrug off unpleasant service encounters because you never know what someone may be going through in their lives and it could just be a really bad day for them. But this person was unequivocally unapologetic with her behavior and did not respond when I attempted to level things out. I literally felt that she held something deeply personal against me (but we'd never encountered each other before). This review would have been 5 stars if not for that cashier, and that experience. My go-to shop. The guys and gals there are very accommodating, forthcoming, and crazy fast about repairs. They have the option for maintenance updates via text and are very responsive with questions. I'll go in with a bike issue and they'll toss it up on the stand to examine before processing it for actual repairs. Often, they'll just do a tweak or two for no charge and I'll be on my way in 10 minutes, door-to-door. Others shops have just taken my bike and money without the special attention. read more

Took my bike in to get the tube changed. The whole place was quite busy, but a repair tech came up and helped me within a minute or two of showing up by the counter. I explained I just needed a tube changed and they said they would get right on it. Repair tech came up to me about 5 minutes later and explained I would need some better rim tape to prevent further flats, said it would be $3.00 extra. He put everything together and rung up the sale, and as it turned out he misquoted the rim tape, but stuck with the lower price he initially said. Overall, I had a great experience. The repair tech was friendly and helpful, and the service was fast (although more expensive than elsewhere). read more

My bike ride on 8/3 ended up with a rear flat tire. I watched some YouTube videos and decided I could fix it myself. Went to Machinery Row Bicycles and bought a tube. I did a nice job with the flat, but messed up my rear brakes (rookie mistake). Took my bike in on 8/4 and explained my situation. The repairman put my bike in the air and fixed it within minutes. He had the proper tools and experience. He didn't charge me anything. Could it have been my Yelp bell he noticed (thanks for the Yelp schwag Corey!)? Regardless, I was very happy, thankful, and put some love in the tip jar. read more

Went in to see if I could get a helmet to ride the public bikes and ended up renting a bike from this place. The first guy I ran into was wildly unhelpful. Not being from madison I wasn't sure what the rules were or where to go to get around the lake. Once I found someone new to talk to things got a little better. The bike was decent but not great. They only do 24 he rental which seems silly seeing that the lake only takes an hour to get around. The only reason I would rent from them is if you want a helmet otherwise stick to the public bikes. read more

I got my bike repaired while I was at work. They did only the repairs I needed and didn't try to sell me anything extra as I feared they might. I work at a bar, so I could not leave and go pick it up... so they brought it over to me! This was above and beyond and I was impressed. Was there over the weekend training for Ironman Wisconsin and my wife had an issue with her rear deraileur and I had an issue with my saddle. Dropped in unannounced and were promptly sent to the rear of the store to explain our issue with one of the available mechanics. The guy who took care of us (Nate) spotted within 5 seconds that my wife's chain was on backwards which could have been a cause of her poor shifting. He kindly cleaned the chain before putting it back on correctly, adjusted her cable tension and deraileur hanger, leveled my seat and also changed the battery on my powertap. This took maybe 20 minutes and the bill was only $35!!!! It's nice to see a group of people that only care about whether or not you're able to be out on your bike, enjoying it and not worry about your bikes performance. read more

Usually pretty busy and you can get lost in the shuffle and have to wait a bit to get service. Good selection of bikes. They benefit from their location right on the trail so you can easily take a bike for a quick test ride in a safe and enjoyable environment. Try to get to one of their sales, otherwise it can be more pricey than Trek or Erik's. read more

I recently had my bike tuned up & repaired here after owning it for 8 years and riding it most days. The mechanic gave it a careful inspection and the estimate was much lower than I had gotten from Erik's. He said he'd test ride the bike after replacing the chain to see if it would need a new rear cassette, which it did. I felt like he was trying to keep costs down where possible, which was nice, and the mechanics were friendly and didn't make me feel like an idiot, which is also nice. The bike rides like new now. This place was a real find!! I come to Madison periodically for work and have rented a bike from Eriks on University a few times. What's great about this shop is they open on Sunday at 10am (2 hrs earlier than Eriks) and close at 6pm - so you can rent on Sunday for 8hrs and its cheaper than Eriks!! It's a good enough bike shop. Over the years I've purchased things here and there, had services, and I think Madison now has better options. Location is a big plus. I am very pleased with the pedals I bought there, but rather displeased that they sold me the wrong size inner tube the same day I went to pick up my bike from a tune-up. I overpaid for a map holder for my bike, but was very pleased that someone worked with me for 20 minutes to find the right screw and help repair a bag they sold me years prior. read more

It's cold common to be able to call up a knowledgeable mechanic, ask about a repair or parts, and stop by the shop to pick up the part I need because they actually have it in Stock. Mechanics are friendly and confident. Special orders are easy. They hire summer staff that's not always the most knowledgeable, but if you get a salesman who's been there, they have great background and will put you on the right bikes. read more

Best customer service experience I've had with a retail institution in a very long time. I brought my bike in to see if someone could explain how to work my odometer. Derek, bike technician, helped me, explained all about my odometer, and then diplomatically advised me that my bike fork had been installed backward (I'd bought it from a bike store in Salem, OR). I didn't have my wallet with me, but he was concerned for my safety on the bike and dropped everything and insisted on fixing it for me on the spot, while I waited, and for FREE. It doesn't get any better than this. I'm a customer for life, to be sure. read more
