Their food? A 5 as always. This set-up? Meh... Maybe a 3.5? Maybe I just need to get used to it? I've been a Macrina fan for a long time. I used to walk a mile from my office in downtown Seattle to their Belltown location before running back while inhaling one of their spectacular pastries or sandwiches. I was excited to hear they were opening up a location in this cute part of Capitol Hill but it took me a little bit before I finally got to visit. The place is bright, airy and a very fitting addition to the neighborhood. It's also pretty big. When you walk in, there's so much going on. There's a beautiful bounty of pastries in their pastry case. There are also paper menus with sandwiches and other made-to-order food options. There's usually a line that wraps around their huge counter top and in front of their pastries. They have multiple staff on the other side helping out customers. When they got to me, I kind of panicked because I actually hadn't had a chance to see what pastries they had (because people were blocking it). I felt like I yelled out the first pastry that looked interesting and then had to turn my attention to the paper menu. I ordered something from there too and ordered a drink. I then waited my turn in the same line for the cash register. I got my pastry mid-way through the line, got a number when I paid for my made-to-order food (which someone brought to my table) but then my name was called at some point too for my espresso drink. #FirstWorldProblems yo but it was a good bit of mental energy to keep track. Wish there was a way to improve this. Other than that, the sandwich was amazing. I inhaled my pastry and the coffee was alright. I'll likely be back. read more

I've had nothing but good experiences here. I typically go later in the day but everything I've wanted I've been able to get. The employees have all been kind. Everything I've tried has been sooo good. The cinnamon roll (heated up) is one of the best I've had. It's flaky and got lots of layers, and the icing is really yum too, not overbearing, just perfect. Also the breakfast biscuit sandwich was really good, the cheese being the star of that plus the biscuit. Obviously the bakery items are all top tier though I haven't tried everything, I will definitely be back for more. Have to add that there is a small parking lot here which is definitely a plus as well! read more

Very clean one way traffic and social distancing practices. Staff was pleasant. The menu was a bit disappointing. Very few not dairy options, so perhaps I am not their demographic. All breakfast sandwiches are premade so you can't switch out bread or leave off cheese. Plain bagel was fine. Nothing exciting. Please consider offering more items without butter. read more

I think this place is great. I am the type of person who realizes when a place is brand new...it's going to be busy and chaotic. I go in knowing that the floors might be a bit messy, the lines might be long, some pastries might be sold out. Give them a break. They're working out the kinks. Come back in a month and your experience will be much better. I had a roly poly which is a delicious cinnamon roll with raisins, nuts and cream cheese frosting. The roll was a croissant-like texture so it was buttery and flakey and delicious. I love how they have sparkling water on tap. Decor is great with lots of natural light and beautiful light fixtures. The ordering process is a bit strange as no one seems to know where to stand or where the line starts. read more

TERRIBLE WAIT TIMES. Despite the delicious food this location is a complete mess. Long lines waiting outside, and only one person at the pastry counter taking orders? Only one barista? Clearly Macrina are better bakers than business operators. Why is my order taken and written on a post-it only to be passed off to another person at the register for them to punch in? Why can I see breakfast sandwiches being made to order when they should have been pre-built before open and then warmed to order? Hey Macrina, take a note from other bakeries and get your service flow figured out. I've been here twice and each time the kitchen is complete chaos, orders are being mixed up, and people are waiting outside in the cold just to ask for a pastry. No baked good is worth this terrible customer experience. read more

I was really hoping for a 4 or 5 star review and when we walked in that was still the plan. The bakery is comfortable, bright and has a nice Atmosphere Then - the service is marginal. Example - we asked if they could split the almond croissant so we could share it. They did split it but brought it out on one small plate - really - couldn't they afford two plates. Now I was hoping for a delicious almond mocha - but they are too classy to have almond syrup - so we ordered Hot Chocolate. You would think that an upscale bakery as this tries to be has some pizazz but first limited on the syrups and then very watered down hot chocolate {did I say Watered Down}. It was also at best mildly warm. Finally - what is hot chocolate without whip cream - where is the fun in that. Well we actually found a bakery that has NO whip cream. I will say the almond croissant was good with a lot of paste. Unfortunately that is not enough to bring us back Note the parking is another fun event - getting in is OK - escaping is difficult and if they are full - you have to back out into the street and hope you do not get hit. read more

Ordered the seasonal fruit double crusted pie (Lucky us, blueberry) and a couple of fresh fruit muffins for the gluten-free for a work celebration. Pie was delicious and the pie crust was flaky and fantastic. The muffins got rave reviews for being gluten-free and wonderful. Thumbs up on both items! The store was clean, everyone was wearing masks, and I felt completely comfortable during this pandemic. read more

This is a truly bizarre location. I have never been somewhere where there is no clearly indicated place to order, no one greets or acknowledges you upon entering, and it is a legitimately difficult process to order. The coffee is good, some of the food items are pretty good (though overpriced), but to top it all off the booths are a DIFFERENT height from the chairs opposite them, meaning you are at a different level than your companion(s) making for an altogether disjointed and strange experience. One overarching suggestion: place an "order here" sign with an arrow. That would solve 90% of confusion and patrons standing around like they don't know what to do. Side note, patrons with sensitive hearing will have an unpleasant experience as all of the hard surfaces make for a resoundingly loud ambience. read more

I think they are a 3.5 bakery in general, but their "Pan de muertos" aka bread of the dead made them drop to 2 stars. First, its nothing like the Mexican bread of the dead, nothing, its not even based mostly on eggs for example, and its full of spices like clover. I am totally fine if you want to reinterpret a classic, and do your own thing, but you have to keep something from the original. You cant call it a "burger"and serve chicken and waffles. Pan de muertos is very hard to find outside of Mexico, and in all honestly, even inside of Mexico there are a ton of versions that are not that good, so yes, its hard, my wife has baked it a few times and it takes a lot of time and effort, however when its good, its totally worth it. La ideal (near Boeing field) has one that is much better than Macrina, but still not good, unfortunately. Finding something better than this one is easy, however I dont have a recommendation that I can endorse yet. If your bakery has one let me know and I will happily go and try it! The second concern concern with this product, is that even they are exploiting a "known brand" and giving you a bait and switch, it could still be tasty, but this is not the case, it tasted really bad, we couldn't even eat a full slice, speaks volumes of their management that approved it. Please, when you eat this garbage, dont think of the Mexican culture (despite the logo and graphics they use), this is in no way an accurate representation of Mexican bread, or Mexican taste buds. Macrina, please rebrand this as the Macrina house bread instead, I rather not take the reputation hit in my culture. read more

6-2-21 12pm. This place is so inefficient it's a joke. When I walked into the store to place my order there was one person ahead of me, somebody who wanted a box of something, but was indecisive about what they wanted. I stood there for 5 minutes while the person behind the counter had a relaxed conversation on all the different permutations. At this point, there were 6 people in line behind me. All I wanted to do was order a sandwich! It didn't help that there were at least 3 other people behind the counter that could have looked up or helped the line, but they couldn't be bothered. Why is the customer service so continually crappy here? Why is there no sense of urgency or efficiency? You give overextended superior customer service to one indecisive person and everybody behind that person has to suffer because your staff can't see the bigger picture. It doesn't help that your items are overpriced. I gave you guys a couple of chances but I won't be back. This place is for middle-aged white women who don't know what they want and don't care about anybody else. Thank you for enabling them. read more

We found this place by accident on our way home. It is a very cute cafe and has relaxing musics. We shared a coconut cream tartlet and latte. The tartlet is quite pricy ($6/each) but it is huge and delicious. It's worth it. Latte is smooth. Staff is friendly. read more

My daughter and I popped in on Saturday morning Aron s 10a and it was hopping! This wasn't a shock, since they got bomb treats. I stood in the pastry line and got a morning roll (a vanilla croissant that was duh-lish), a granola bar and the morning glory muffin (basically like carrot cake in muffin form, also bursting with flavor) for my daughter. I didn't taste the granola bar, but I'm sure it's also tasty. I added a loaf of brioche and tea for good measure. Had some of the brioche this morning, toasted with honey, and really, it made my Sunday morning. Everyone was really friendly and helpful. Wait to pick out the goods wasn't too bad. The space was just really open, bright and pretty. Preferably more indoor table seating, especially if you want to eat a meal. We sat outside to eat our muffins, but I was freezing! Macrina was good but I'd definitely just stick to the baked goods. Came here on a Saturday to try their brunch menu and it was ok. The French toast was pretty good. It was topped with fruit and cream. Can't go wrong with that! We also tried the cream cheese and smoked salmon on top of a fish shaped bread, which sounds great but was really quite dry. Potato's were pretty average too. I hear the egg sandwich is really good so I'll have to go back and try that. The biscuit with jam was quite good also. For brunch, I'd give it a 2 star but for the baked goods, a 4! Very nice restaurant, new and shiny. However, it's hard to find seating and the group next to us had to squeeze 6 people into a table for 2. read more

I love the food and the staff seems nice enough. The store design is beautiful however I would suggest they streamline ordering as there is no clear process. I was told to not order at the actual counter with cash registers but to stand by the bread and order. I waited for my turn then was passed over for another person who had walked up. I get it, everyone is afraid of Covid, but it's no excuse to be rude. We went in with another couple to get a snack and some coffee, we are from out of town, and came to try something local other than the big chain coffee... I'm sorry we didn't order food at the right place, but when you were calling us to pay for our coffee at the register, we thought it was odd that no one came back to take our food order. My order wasn't correct, sadly we didn't notice in time, and our friends just wanted 2 toasted bagels. You were able to serve several other people ahead, while shaming us for not waiting on the correct spot... not everyone who walks into your small neighborhood bakery lives close by. This review is for the management of how they are handling the line. Yes we all get Covid is the reason why the line is out the door but to hold the line because you don't have spot by register is ridiculous. Why not make people wait outside for coffee instead of us all standing around for half an hour to pick up a pastry. They started with no standards and have now gone overboard and ruined the experience at this location. I used to go here daily but won't anymore the management of this specifically on busy days is driving off business. read more

Baked goods I recommend. Not a place for a snack or lunch, sandwiches look very uninviting. Wish they made rustic Bread sandwiches like DeLaurentis! Soup portions are tiny. My big complaint is that nothing is served on a plate, just help. I asked why and they responded due to lack of help.. evidentially they don't want to spend money on paper plates and possibly help. If you read my other reviews, you already know I'm obsessed with Macrina bakery. I decided to check out this new location because it's on my way to work. Location: even more convenient than the Belltown location. There's a decent amount of street parking and a small adjacent parking lot exclusivly for customers. Inside: a ton of bright natural lighting, I would have grabbed a photo but my hands were full of goodies! Significantly more seating than the Belltown location, although the layout encourages strangers to sit together. Food and coffee: amazingly flavorful and perfect in every way. Just do yourself a favor and visit Macrina. It must be half decent if I've gone by twice in one week. read more

Excellent Thanksgiving experience!! We ordered some dinner rolls for Thanksgiving and it was so well organized. On Wednesday I went in to pick them up and all preordered items were on big racks taking up some of the seating area. Prepaid so just picked it up and walked out. So nice and no stress. The best part was the rolls were so good!! I hope we can get them again for an event Soft and just the right sweetness and perfect for leftovers. read more

My husband and I had both lunch and brunch here while visiting for a weekend. Lunch was okay - we shared a carne and bahn mi sandwich. both were decent but not amazing - the bread was good, the fillings were okay. They do have sparkling water in addition to still at the water station, so that was a nice touch. Brunch was quite impressive though. I had the fried egg sandwich, which tasted like a shakshuka sandwich - roasted tomatoes with egg on a delicious bread. My husband had the smoked salmon bialy sandwich, which he quite enjoyed. Both were large with roasted potatoes and a strawberry. The coffee and tea were both good as well. It was moderately busy at around 9 AM on a Saturday, but we were able to get a table. We didn't try any, but the pastries looked delicious and huge. Definitely looked like a nice treat for next time! read more

First time at any Macrina Bakery and it's close to our house. I must say, it's absolutely delicious. We got the Bialy egg sandwich with bacon, half Verdura sandwich, and a strawberry cupcake. All were great. I think this is the best breakfast/egg sandwich I've ever had. The bread itself was toasted but soft in the inside. Most bacon sandwiches I've had gave me two small bacon strips. This one had three huge big boy sized bacon strips. I will have this any day and any time of the day. The Verdura sandwich was also delicious. The bread was the star and was super soft. There was just a little too much mushroom on the sandwich. The cupcake was great. The frosting was not too sweet and the cake was a perfect consistency. We just wish there was more filling inside. The interior is fantastic. It is aesthetically appealing and just a wonderful place. The staff is amazing and super friendly. We will definitely be back and try other pasties and breads! This bakery is not good. I got a buttermilk biscuit with strawberry jam in the middle and also a bagel. The biscuit tasted like a flavorless blob of dry, overworked dough. I honestly don't know how they sell those biscuits with confidence. I almost asked to return it. The bagel wasn't great. My biggest issue was that it had this after taste of Deli meat- like it had come into contact with some grease in their toaster. I asked for it to be heated with a side of cream cheese which they forgot so I had to ask again. Overall just a disappointment. Not sure why it's always crowded. read more
