Went here on a Sunday looking for some brunch. It seemed to get good reviews on Yelp so thought we would give it a try. They have some displays of their hot foods and it looked pretty good. I got the fried egg sandwich with bacon that is on their regular menu. My boyfriend got the french toast with 2 chicken sausages, pear, topped with marscapone. I was realllly happy with my sandwich. I wish there were more red peppers but I enjoyed all those grilled onions in it. The bread was kind of shaped like a fish and wasn't super hard, but had a nice texture to it with poppy seeds. The french toast was nice and fluffy and overall the dish wasn't too sweet. The chicken sausage was AMAZING! The portion size was a little bigger than I expected as well. I would definitely come back to try their pastries. Everything looked super good but I was too full by the end of the meal. I also got an iced mexican mocha and the chunks of chocolate at the bottom made the drink that much better :) Ample amount of seating near the windows or tables. read more

This place is so good, it's scary. I am actually REALLY afraid that I've discovered the wonderful, tasty goodness of Macrina Bakery. I decided to venture outside of Ballard to explore brunch options, and I found myself outside of their bakery windows on a rainy day. The windows were steamy, and the pastries were beckoning me..."eat me, you know you want to." I stepped inside and immediately was greeted by an employee who took my order: a demi baguette sandwich with ham, fontina cheese, arugula, and dijon with a nutella bun (OMFG) dessert and a 12 oz. drip. Let me just say...the sandwich was AMAZING. Do you have any idea what a relief it is to find a PERFECTLY FRESH sandwich that I don't have to say "no mayo, no this, no that" for when I order?! I'm telling you, this sandwich brought me back to when I lived in Italy, where the little shops would have fresh-baked sandwiches along with espresso and other pastries. They were so perfect, just like Macrina's. The nutella bun was OUT OF THIS WORLD. I haven't tasted something that I loved THAT MUCH until now. Shaped like a muffin, the dough was soft and moist like cardamom bread with some rock sugar on top and filled with a gob of the most delicious nutella I've ever tasted. Again, the only true comparison were the nutella rolls in Italy. God, it was heaven in my mouth. I ate that thing like there was no tomorrow. A lot of locals frequent Macrina. It can get a bit crowded inside, so my recommendation is to get it to go. There's plenty of street parking since Macrina borders a residential area. Not disability friendly. Walked there with my service dog to pick up some breakfast and was confronted by multiple staff members. There is a great sign out front saying no ESA dogs, which I read. I told them he is not an ESA and they yelled across all the customers to ask my disability. The tone was blatant disbelief. It was beyond embarrassing. They did not apologize or express any regret for how they treated me. After I explained to three of them that my dog was, in fact, a service animal. I understand that other people attempt to bring their non-service dogs in, but no need to be rude and make people who actually have a disability feel horrible. I just about cried. We came in for a loaf of sliced bread. Used their tap machine to pay for the bread + 15% tip. The cashier claims the charge never went thru even though it showed up as "Approved" on their point of sale device and on my bank charges. She insisted having me pay for the bread again even though I had already paid for it. I asked why I have to pay for it twice to which she replied she wasn't sure if the charge went thru (despite her point of sale device and my bank app showing the transaction). After some back and forth with her, I ended up leaving the bakery without taking the bread out of the store -- out of frustration. So now I have a bank charge for an item I never took out of the store. This outcome though is better than have 2 charges for 1 item and then being upset about the store asking us to pay twice for the item. We were treated differently from other paying customers at this store -- not sure why. Maybe it is because we are Asian and do not speak English as well as we should. How much clearer do we have to be to tell the store we already paid when the point of sale system says "Approved" and we have a bank charge on our statement? Won't be back and wish we never walked in. We're better off buying their products at Ballard market where we are treated like other paying customers. read more

Leslie Mackie should rethink her business model and also what it means to be a part of a neighborhood and community. The prices here have become ridiculous. We all know what the ingredients of a croissant are and while prices of "some" ingredients may be slightly higher (remember we're all buying groceries and astutely aware of prices, especially now) they simply aren't $5 a croissant higher. Add Leslie and Macrina to the list of businesses that are taking advantage of consumer sentiment and too much news about inflation and exploiting long standing patrons. I'll shop the locals that are actually interested in feeding their community and focused on value in all forms, and not those that are just maximizing "their" own bottom line. read more

I was staying with a friend who lived in Queen Anne, within a 5- to 10-minute walk of this bakery. I stopped by twice during my stay, the 1st time on a Friday around noon, and the 2nd time on a Saturday morning. The bakery is really cute, and it looked like you could have your food to stay, although I only got pastries/bread to-go both times I stopped by. On Friday at noon the place was really busy. It was less so on Saturday morning, but I'm sure it would've filled up as the breakfast/brunch rush hour progressed. My first visit, I got the ham and cheese brioche and a demi-baguette. The brioche was about $5 and the demi-baguette was about $3 (before tax). The brioche was quite large and filling; I think it could be a small meal on its own, and it was very tasty. I probably wouldn't get the demi-baguette again, as it didn't have quite the texture I like in a baguette, and was a bit expensive in any case. There was a mushroom and cheese brioche that looked really good too, but when I returned on Saturday, they didn't appear to have it in stock. Instead, I got a fruit braid, which I think was $5.50 before tax. Like the savory brioche, this was also pretty huge; I could barely finish it in the end. The fruit braid was well made, but I think I'd probably go for another savory pastry if I'm ever back in town, since they're so big and I sometimes have trouble finishing huge sweet things. Up a few blocks in Queen Anne, I found this gem, as the boss called it a must try. Parking is ample on the sides of the street. Cute spot in Queen Anne on W McGraw Street. When you walk in, there is a little line. Setting: Perfectly orchestrated. Even flow. Through out. Upon entering, the bakery case and samples of their brunch items are in front of you, very well lit with attractive lighting. Croissants, cinnamon rolls, muffins, scones, cookies, pound cakes, tarts, cakes, fresh baked baguettes, and other artisanal breads, ciabatta, rye bread loaves, vollkorn, danish. They also have a brunch and lunch menu that change frequently. Your order is taken there at that counter, and then you proceed to the cash register. You're given a number placard after you've settled your bill. To my right is a the cold brew, in an old school Breaking Bad contraption. Doesn't get better than this! Everything is well organized and clean. It's noticeable how clean everything is, and thought out stations providing a nice traffic flow. Fresh flower vases on every table. Indoor and outdoor seating seems a little cramped, and may be the only downfall. There's a back area station (again, evenflow, thank you Pearl Jam), for iced water, separate cups, flatware, napkins, and an assortment of trash receptacles. Recycle, trash, and compost bin! Love it! Very clean and organized flatware and condiment station. An additional area for coffee accoutrements. Onto the food. I order the seasonal galette. The flavors are well composed. The crust is buttery, super flaky, and holding structure. Flavor is spot on. Egg and fontina/ ricotta cheese is fluffy and creamy. The leeks are lightly caramelized and a beautiful addition along with the herbs, making the dish a formal party in your mouth. Shitake mushrooms and shallots are seasoned perfectly. The mezze cup was less impressive on the flavor front, though I did enjoy the the addition of the fig, otherwise giving the rather bland mezze some pop. Lastly, the bathroom. Selection is not always consistent, but that's part of the adventure of trying something new. Today I got the orange hazelnut pinwheel and it was fabulous. Usually get an americano, but today wanted a cappuccino. It was pretty much a latte, NOT a cappuccino. Full of hot milk and very little foam. I was pretty disappointed, but didn't want to ask for a remake because the line was so long, it was extremely busy and we even had to share a table with a kind gentleman. I love this location on Queen Ann. The bakery is in a residential neighborhood so people know each others; I find it frienly. I ordered a ham and cheese and it was excellent. Wonderful bakery located in the beautiful Queen Anne neighborhood. I visited it upon my airbnb host's recommendation (she said it's the best bakery in Seattle). Enjoyed both the espresso shot and the baked goods (I got nutella brioche and seasonal muffin). The espresso is delicious! It's strong and citrusy (fruity), but it doesn't burn my stomach. Additionally, the after taste is clean with nice coffee aroma (no sour taste left at all). I could imagine it will go really well with steamed milk too. Immensely better than its Belltown sister. In a few different ways. I made the hilltop climb to seek out this lovely bakery for a friendly meeting. I have to admit I was skeptical considering the problems at the other location. No such problem here. At least during the weekdays. While the amount of space is not much different, the amount of clientle isn't the same. The Queen Anne location can accommodate the small amount of people in that space. The bakery items are just as tantalizing though, I must admit, they were tastier. But that just could have been that batch or just the happy bias I had from the surroundings. Great lattes here too but they were out of my favorite raspberry shot. Poo. And I didn't hear my order but another lovely customer brought me my latte when she realized I didn't hear it. Every time I visit Macrina I think of Macarena, which is a decidedly bad thing. Macarena is a terrible dance that people who are supposedly your friends, make you do when you go to their weddings. Macrina is a bakery that has some really delicious baked goods (on the pricey side) but really mediocre service that you are subjected to when you shop at the Queen Anne location. I've had service that ranged from nonchalant-slightly medicated to outright rude. I know they are busy and have a lot to do but it would seem that management would be interested in the whole experience, not just the food aspect. Once everyone stopped being polite we agreed, the cake was disgusting. I have never had a "bad" cake. Its off the beaten path in a part the neighborhood that feels charming, quaint and reminds me of San Francisco. They sell expresso, sandwiches, salads and bakery goods in a cozy, hodgepodge of a cafe. Service, at times, can be almost excruciatingly slow here. I mean, if it takes them that long to make a latte, how is it that they can fill every Metropolitan Market and Whole Foods in town with abundant, tasty baked goods? Its a quandary. Macrina has a reputation as one of the better bakeries in Seattle, while competing with an all star cast (Tall Grass, Cafe Besalu, Bakery Nouveau, Dahlia Bakery) of bakery talent. As locals come on in they'll grab a few sammies, maybe their morning cup of joe or sliced cake and sit by the window and read the paper. Just like that. And where I'm from, unlike the hustle and bustle of Los Angelinos, there isn't that fast paced feel here. I opted for their Dill Scone with Cream Cheese and Salmon. (fresh dill, scallions and parmesan cheese) Ever. So. Tasty. Their popular lemon tea cake is filled with dried sour cherries and topped with a zesty lemon glaze. Also grabbed the hubby a Salmon Scramble (eggs softly scrambled on an onion with Gerard & Dominique cold-smoked salmon and chive crème fraiche, served with herb roasted potatoes and our organic greens salad) Oh yeah, also grabbed a few of their shorbread cookies to go. With a cup of their tea in hand, I was ready to say farewell to Macrina. Doing double crossies and in high hopes that they'd open up a chain down here in Southern California soon. This Queen Anne bakery and cafe is both precious and excellent. I went in to buy my boyfriend a dessert to eat after his conference meetings during the day. Located on a typically adorable Queen Anne street, Macrina has unusual pastries, one of which I couldn't even pronounce (it starts with a P but I didn't write it down so can't share). I chose a chocolatey thing that turned out to be gluten-free. I am not GF and neither is my boyfriend (nor do 95% of the Americans eat a GF diet need to do so for health reasons), but the lovely lady assured me that he wouldn't notice because it was more like a flourless chocolate dessert (very dense). I tested some financier-like almond chocolate thing while paying for his dessert and while I don't indulge often in desserts, this was too good to pass up. I bought it and ate for breakfast the next morning. I forget what it was called but it rhymed with "Grenache." The sandwiches looked great. Macrina would be my go-to breakfast cafe if I lived in Queen Anne. Every dessert and menu item I saw looked scrumptious as well as reasonably-priced. I can't believe i haven't wrote a review for macrina bakery yet. Along with joule and tilth's sunday brunch, macrina is one of my favorite brunch spot. The only downside to macrina queen anne location is the limited space, but customers usually seem to take out a lot, and i never experienced crazy waiting. They have awesome sandwiches, from vietnamese bahnmi to turkey zuchini sandwiches. Everything comes out fairly quickly and they just taste so good. Breads are fresh, and served warm after pressed in panini. I even tried mac n cheese once, and it was as good as Beecher's version!! I also enjoy fresh squizzed grapefruit iuice and coffee from them, which makes my breakfast/brunch ten times better. I had to take out one star for weird experience i had though. This may be TMI and it could be just me, but their red food coloring for red velvet gave me with very interesting experience in the restroom for couple days... I enjoy red velvet quite often but this was the only time that I had passed red...stuff. Maybe too much food coloring in their cupcakes, but other than that, everything is great, and i just made sure i dont get cupcake from them again :) read more

Adorable, friendly, and tasty! I would love a coffee house/bakery like this one in my neighborhood back in Charlotte. The employees are very happy and friendly. When I asked what was the best breakfast treat, the guy had a grin ear to ear and said that it was difficult to say because everything was delicious. Ha! Indeed every item looked fantastic and it is all made in house. I ordered the fruit muffin and hubs got the oatmeal with the Morning Glory muffin. The coffee is unlimited! What a perk! I got the highly acclaimed Mexican mocha and it was rich and fantastic. It was fun to see this place draw in the young and older from the Queen Anne 'hood. Annie and I went here on her birthday after researching the best French Toast joints in the city. I saw a picture online, grabbed Annie and flew to the cafe. We arrived right at the start of brunch and were the first to order the French Toast and Belgian Waffles. INCREDIBLE. ENORMOUS. The sweet, house-made-no-doubt whip cream, is the best I've ever tasted. The French Toast was a feat of architecture, a handcrafted, bread-buttressed, and beautifully built birthday surprise. Top notch on both entrees. The 3-star rating is for the wait. It took about 30 minutes (if not more) to get our food. Albeit, we were the first to order breakfast, so they may have just started preparing it, but, in my opinion, with food of this caliber you should be ready to dish it out reasonably fast, else people experience 3 stars instead of an inevitable, no kidding, INEVITABLE 5. A friend and I came here for coffee and catching up, I had a dill scone with salmon, and a lovely cup Of their drip coffee black - it was all quite yummy! Pretty flowers on the tables made the whole place look chummy. It was quite crowded on a weekday morning, but not overwhelmingly so, Especially since most patrons were taking their baked goods and drinks to go.
