Great cut. I have noticed a lot of barbers can make you look great with a lot of product so you leave the shop skipping. Then you wash your hair and notice your hair is uneven, chunks cut out here and there, heavy on one side, etc. This won't happen here. This is the cut you are looking for at a reasonable price. It's a bonus that the shop is small, in an old, vintage building, and the inside speaks of a true barbershop. You won't regret. Remember to call for an appointment and it is cash only. read more

Very grateful that I was able to secure an appointment same day! I came in for a low taper, and to shape the top to be low maintenance but so I could style it to a professional appearance if I want to. I'm very happy how it came out and I will be returning. First time visiting Mac's, and I can safely say that I've found my new barber. Mac's been in this same spot for 20 years cutting hair. It's just him in a small, comfortable shop with some awesome decor to view upon. Great conversation -- Mac's is just a regular guy from the LBC. I'm an infrequent Yelper and as much as I would like my review of Mac's to be positive, it is far from it. I was raised to show everyone equal respect. And to especially be respectful upon meeting strangers. To sum it up, my experience was pretty bad. Mac is much more concerned with his precious floor than with welcoming new customers. Floors get walked on and will inevitably take on wear and tear. It's a floor after all. Mac almost kicked me out because he thought I would scratch his floor with my cycling shoes. I told him at the time that I had put on covers that prevent slipping and scratching. He would not listen to reason. I got my haircut and left. I went back about 5 weeks later to give it another shot. The first thing out of Mac's mouth was, "you scratched my floor the last time you were here." Do I really need to argue here? Such incessant and ill placed vanity. Like I said, the covers on the bottoms of my cycling shoes are made of rubber and protect from slipping and scratching. This is simply an example of stubbornness and prejudice against what one doesn't understand. Grow up. The only reason I gave 2 instead of 1 star is because my haircut was actually decent. It's a shame I'll never return because of something so stupid as a floor. read more

I went back here a little over a week ago, since it was time for a cut and I wanted something 'summer short'. Greg did a little interior reorganization since I was here last time; register is in the northeast corner of the shop and he has an old soda machine in the northwest corner. He moved the three waiting seat a bit further from the door and posted a sign on his register: "Barber takes his time If you want to wait, grab a mag. If you don't, come back later" I get halfway finished and three other guys arrive about 10 minutes apart, so at least he had a full (I'd think for him) afternoon. He does take his time. I should go every month but I just let the crabgrass on my head call hair get a bit long before it needs manipulated. Lunch break is between 1-2pm and you might find him at Babe's (I've seen him there a couple times). He charges $15 for a cut and is always appreciative and sincere when I tip him out $5. C'mon guys, just throw the man a twenty! read more

Will never be back. Tried this place once and wasnt too happy. Gave him another shot and that was it. Dude was rude and said he wouldnt cut my hair because i had product in it. I had a very light gel and a light water splash takes care of it. Regardless, i had other co-workers complain about his inability to return messages for appointments. He has no character and just isn't someone i'd enjoy seeing on a regular basis. The Barber shop is pretty sterile but great if you love that 50's greaser scene. He didn't do my hair any favors. I came out looking like a 50s greaser. Straight up Emilio Estevez in "The Outsiders". It's probably my fault, this guy has a serious amount of local regulars and high reviews. But when the barber doesn't say anything the whole time and responds to your friendly conversation with one word answers it starts to get uncomfortable. "Is that your car in that photo?" "No.".... awkward. By the time the chop was done I just wanted to get out of there. Hey, everyone's allowed an off day but I have to face the world tomorrow. I usually go to Brenda's , which is about a half mile away. I thought I'd give this place a try since Brenda is on vacation this week, and I live just down the street. I have long hair with side burns. I wanted to get my sideburns trimmed and a shave. I was told he only does regular short haircuts. I asked if he could touch up my sideburns but he repeated once again that he only does regular short hair cuts. So if you're looking for a regular short haircut, this may be the place to go. But if your hair is longer, and you want to touch up your sideburns and get a shave, then the other shop I mentioned above is a good alternative. *update- hey Ryan, thanks for the tip. Didn't realize that getting sideburns trimmed was too difficult for a barber shop. I'll keep going to Brenda's. read more

OK, I initially said on this review (out of frustration) that this guy "didn't need the business" due to no call back from msgs left on his answering machine for an appt. After seeing my review, I got an apologetic call from the owner. Apparently, I showed up last Saturday during his lunch hour (not stated on his website) be aware that it is from 1-2 so don't come during that time. The background to my effort is that I called several times from mid to late January for an appointment, or at least to confirm if his shop was open. No answer..ever. Still determined, I actually drove to his shop last Saturday around 130PM. Shop locked, blinds closed, but "OPEN" sign displayed in window. ( I guess according to the owner I missed a smaller sign in the door "out to lunch") . I stood out front and and called... and actually finally got an answering machine , so I left ph # for a call back. Never heard back after one week. Follow up: The owner called today to tell me he was sorry but with his schedule during the last week he forgot to return my call. Additionally he told me he had phone problems for several weeks due to Verizon. Perhaps he's really a good barber, but the hassle just left me seeking blades somewhere else. I appreciate he made the effort , triggered by this review, to apologize. read more

This place is the real 50's deal. Sole-propietorship: one barber, one chair, barber pole out front. One 12 foot by 12 foot room with a red and black checkered linoleum floor and a black pedestal sink. Mechanical cash register. A pile of hot rod and tattoo magazines to occupy your time as you wait your turn. Mid-century memorabilia (sepia photographs of Long Beach, Von Dutch artwork, framed WWII-era pin-ups) on the walls This place is for guys: guys who want a proper cut. Greg cuts it just right and at the price he charges, he's certainly not getting wealthy doing this. Conversation in the place runs from cars and women, to "the way things used to be." I stumbled across this place and felt welcome from the first visit. This seems to be the unspoken cross-roads for that strata of society that either really did live in the 50's or we younger kids who still appreciate the style. I have met other people in there who turn out to be neighbors or business owners who deal in vintage stuff be it cars, collectables, furniture, or otherwise. Local, real, and human. First of all, I signed up with Yelp just because I was impressed with Mac's Barber Shop and wanted more people to know about him. In the last 8 years of living in Southern CA, I've only had three people cut my hair. Of those three, the two I knew personally were getting too difficult to reach for a simple haircut and the other decided to work too far from me (south OC). I checked Yelp and found Mac's Barber Shop and saw that he had good reviews. I'm going outta town soon and I needed haircut before I left. It was Xmas Eve when I decided I needed a buzz, so I took a chance and went to Mac's. The owner/sole proprietor of the shop, Greg, ended up knowing a few good friends of mine right off the bat. I had never met him or even heard of him before. This was a good sign, because the guys he knew always have clean haircuts and he mentioned that they'd come see him in Long Beach all the time (even through they live in Orange County). Let's get to it, the haircut: I walked in at 8am and asked for the "simple, clean, short, cholo style haircut". That's what I got. To get it right, he spent a full hour and 10 minutes with me. I was stoked and he charged $15 bucks. I gave him $25 and I was outta there. I'll be back for sure. I got enough to deal with in my life and don't need to be chasing barbers around for a good fucking haircut. read more

I've been going to Greg at Mac's monthly for about 3 years. I like his no nonsense approach to barbering. Reminds me of the shops I went to when I was a kid. He specializes is regular men's haircuts, of all types. If you want frou-frou, or have long hair, go to a salon. He does'nt have a pool table, beer, do shaves, pamper you or kiss your butt like the new wave of trendy shops. Just a great hair cut, at a fair price. Good value for the money. And, pay attention to his signage. His hours (and lunch hour) are clearly posted. He takes his time and does it right. Please note that Greg's business averages 4 star reviews. Just a few haters. Moved into the Cal Heights neighborhood 18 years ago and needed to find a local barber. A friend turned me onto Mac and I've been going to him ever since. If you looked up Barber in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Mac next to the entry. He takes his time, making sure your haircut is exactly how you want it. I especially like that he went to an appointment only setup. As much as I liked hanging out in his shop waiting for the chair, I love that I can make an appointment for a cut that works with my schedule. The best in Long Beach, period. Mac used to cut my hair as a kid back when he had a shop on Orange with "the Old Man". When I moved back to LB, I tried a few shops and didn't find what I was looking for until I came back here. Skip the pseudo-vintage spots with bearded hipsters and "free" beers to go along with a mediocre and overpriced haircut. Mac's the real deal - one man, one chair, damn good haircuts. He takes his time and it shows in the quality of his work. He's a no-BS guy - reserved but friendly, always respectful, and takes time to get to know his customers. Used to go to a shop and wait for my preferred guy, but I love that I can know I'll be in with very little wait. Like an old school barber shop otherwise. Competitive prices as well. DONT GO HERE UNLESS YOU ARE ALREADY A REGULAR! I've gone to Mac's twice. Both times have been bad experiences so I'm calling it. No Mas. First time was around the time I moved to Long Beach in 2010. He let me sit there for an hour while he pleasantly talked with a regular. I talked with the guy in the chair about some legal problems he was having but noticed that Mac wouldn't speak to me. Dude and I were talking friendly... typical Barbershop banter, but Mac would only speak to him like I wasn't in the room. Once the guy's haircut was done, Mac's pleasant demeanor with dude changed to standoffish and before I even sat down he asked me 'what do you want?" I said I wanted the sides tightened up and a low fade straight around my head, a basic haircut.... Apparently my hair was too short because he told me 'I don't cut on top of someone else's work'. What are you talking about!? Like I had a crappy tattoo outline I wanted him to fill in and put his name on. I told him it had been over a week but he tells me "Go back to who ever cut your hair last time!" So after waiting for over an hour, I got sent packing without a hair cut. Thing is, I get that any shop owner reserves the right to refuse service, but he could've done that at the beginning. And I get having an honor code in your line of work... I'm all about that. But codes of honor have to make sense. This was just a BS excuse to try to twist discriminating against someone into a matter of integrity. He never even actually let me sit in the chair so he never had any intention. Like I said - B. effin S I went a second time recently (my barber passed away and I was desperate) and this time he did cut my hair.... I wish he had given me the boot again. I sat uncomfortably in his chair trying topics and getting shut down... cars (Nope!, music (He clearly identifies as a punk rocker) Nope!, sports (Nope), the barbering craft... (nope) nope, tools of his trade... You ever use a Model 111? Shut up, nope and be quiet! No matter the conversation topic I tried, he shut me down. The vibe this guy kicked off was just awful. This guy has a CHIP ON HIS SHOULDER and apparently thinks acting like a dick is "Old School". I have no idea, but it was a bad experience. Cutting hair well is only part of being a good barber. A good barber, a barber who is OLD SCHOOL (I heard Mac repeatedly refer to himself as 'Old School') is as good at the nuanced part as just cutting hair. An OG, old school barber makes people feel welcome, and can seem like meeting an old friend for the first time. Because guys who really are OG and really are Old School don't need to put up some Hardass front. My old barber from up north was old school. He was the real deal. He'd done a stretch of time in State, he'd lived the life and paid his debt and was a giant man who no one wanted to mess with. But he was warm and welcoming to regulars and newbies alike when they walked in the door. He was probably more attentive to newbies because he knew they needed the extra treatment to be made to feel comfortable... And you looked forward to spending an hour in his shop every couple weeks. With Mac, I'm sure some of his regulars get good treatment, but if you don't already have a relationship.... triangulating my experience to other reviews.... It's a crap shoot. He may act cool, but it seems like just as often he treats people like crap because to him that somehow makes him feel big and tough and "old skool". read more

There is nothing special about this place and he isn't hanging up a barber pole in Beverly Hills so I don't get the snarky attitude. Decided to try the shop after reading all the reviews on Yelp. If you are looking for a straight up, old-school hair cut then Mac's is probably for you. If you want anything special you should probably go somewhere else. He seems to have a bunch of regulars that he has conversations with, if you're a newbie he probably wont be saying much. My hair came out quite a bit shorter than I wanted, but that's because he really only does one style of cut. He does indeed take his time though that's for sure. Bottom line is, he's a good barber if you're looking for that old school/greaser style but I think I will stick with SuperCuts. read more

Hit the road Mac!!! After driving by countless times, I decided to stop in and give him a try. He just was not involved to cut hair (too close to lunch time I guess) and wanted to just end the hair cut. He used only his rickity old dull clippers,(that needed serious oil),the whole time. He didn't even trim the back of my neck...cost extra to use a razor he says. $20.00 a hair cut and costs extra for a razor...WOW!!! I'll stick to my Salvadorian girl barber up the street for $10.00. She gets a $5.00 tip all the time. She is only 19 years old and shell put this guy to shame. read more

First time I came here I was a walk-in. (Yelp says appointments not needed.) no issues, the haircut was great, price was great too. I've been here several times since, with and without appointments. Today I came back as a walk in, since I'm never able to get a hold of the guy on the phone, and was told he doesn't do walk-ins. So, cool. Eight years after first bringing my son here and leaving a review it's time for an update. Shortly after the first review I became a customer myself and after eight years I can tell you I have never had a bad haircut. Mac is consistent, precise and reasonably priced. If you are looking for a mimosa and an ego massage right when you walk in the door then you may be disappointed. If you want a quality haircut at a good price then this is the place.
