But I just climb the escalators to the cheaper stuff above and I am in heaven. I always have amazing luck here, and how could you not? The store is massive, the girls/womens section upstairs is so big I easily get lost and or lose shopping partners in here. (I'm serious, I have to text Cindy P. just to find her!) I worked at the May Company, a now-defunct department store chain, in high school, and ever since then I've had a soft spot in my heart for mega department stores. So I often find myself shopping at Macy's, or eating at the food court, and even have a Macy's credit card (which I pay off every month to avoid being charged 110% interest). It's kind of a habit, but in reality, there isn't that much at Macy's that I really want to buy. I find myself repeating variations of the same pattern, which involves buying a cosmetic item from Laura Mercier or Clinique, a bra or Barely There underwear from lingerie, maybe buying a small kitchen utensil, debating over whether to buy additional Fiesta Ware and not doing it, and looking at the jewelry and not buying any because most of it is pretty ugly. Then I have sushi in the food court. Overall, the clothes don't really appeal to me much. The shoe department is the worst. Why are they so lazy? At Nordstrom, it appears they've chosen each individual shoe-- the selection is curated to fill every niche and bring delight to a shoe-lover's heart. At Macy's, an enormous shoe department doesn't translate into a varied selection, because they choose 10 established brands or whatever and offer a bunch of shoes from that brand, which are in themselves stylistically similar to each other. Ugh, Macy's sucks. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a former Nordstrom employee, but seriously, you shouldn't have to beg an employee just to purchase something. You shouldn't walk into a fitting room that hasn't been cleaned. You shouldn't walk into the shoe department and see trash on the floor. You shouldn't have to watch 5 employees chit chat and blatant ignore you holding a shoe that you want a size in. I shop at this Macy's when I'm on a budget (which is pretty much always) but Forever21 and H&M just aren't going to cut it. And while I've found a few nice things, I've NEVER received adequate service, let alone stellar service. Perhaps Macy's is horrifically underpaying their salespeople, but man, you would never know they work on commission. Yes, I'm biased. Because at Nordstrom I never saw any of my co-workers treat a customer in such a blatantly rude and disrespectful manner, and because Nordstrom employees pride themselves on customer service no matter what a bad mood they're in and how little they've sold that day. This Macy's because it is in the center of the city in Union Square is always so busy! I don't mind all of the people but it's really hard to walk when you first enter in especially if you're entering in near the elevator, you have to wait forever for the elevator. But during the holidays it's very festive and beautiful and the windows are cool. And the view from the top of the cheesecake factory is splendid! go see it! read more

I paid my purchase that cost over $100 with a combination of a gift card AND cash on a holiday. Later on the week I decided to return it so I can pay it with a Macy's Card (to get the 20% off), so I SHOULD be fully refunded by the original payment... guess not. Every single penny payment went back into my gift card--no cash. I asked for the manager to refund me back to my original payment but she couldn't process it. I gave it 2 stars because they tried to help me as much as they can. In the end I didn't get my original payment of cash back. Thanks Macy's, don't put that rule down if it's not going to happen next time. read more

Infuriating Macy's Card Policy I've never yelped, blogged, or e-ranted in any form before, but my just-completed shopping experience has steam still boiling from my ears. I'd already been to three other stores looking for a Christmas present for my wife, so I was pleasantly surprised when I spotted a necklace that instantly seemed right at Macy's. It was 2:20 p.m. (and I had to be back at work for a 3:00 meeting), but I figured with my office a block away I would be fine. Or not. After having me type in my SSN, the clerk tried to look me up in the system, as I thought my wife had already established a Macy's account. No dice. I provided my ID so he could call the manager, and he was on the phone for a good ten minutes. 2:30 p.m. One inconclusive call later, I again typed in my SSN (at what point do you worry about a store committing identity theft?) and he called again. Still nothing. Finally, he just handed the phone over to me so the manager could explain things--and this is the part that really galled me: even though I have the same home address, same home phone, can give my wife's maiden name, and the first 3 and last 4 digits of my wife's SSN (don't have all 9 memorized yet), because my name wasn't on the card/account with hers I couldn't use it. Ok fine. But did said manager say that he could simply edit the account information so I'd be listed too? No! Now I understand that preventing ID theft is a serious matter--which I generally appreciate--but the unwillingness to make any attempt to help was enraging, not to mention the inordinate amount of time this bumbling, ineffectual process took up. 2:45 p.m. Being desperate for the perfect present, I ended up signing up for a separate account myself--which I will NEVER, EVER use. As I was signing up, the clerk didn't have the paperwork and didn't know what the fraud protection they were offering was about, so once again I had to wait while he went to find it. 2:55 p.m. After typing in my SSN two more times, along with my other contact info, I was nearing a purchase. After taking a few more minutes to box up the necklace--in a Macy's box which I'm going to throw away and replace with a plain one from my closet--the clerk finally charged my card and set me loose. 3:01 p.m. I was late for my meeting. read more

I have to fly to Los Angeles and needed a new business suit for my one day client meeting. I purchased a Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein combination 3 piece outfit in black and white. I loved my choice and loved the selection they provided. The sales ladies were super friendly and very accommodating. All in all I found everything I needed within my lunch hour. Well I enjoy shopping at Macy's and this review is only based on this certain location and its employees. I'm sadly giving this location such a poor rating because my boyfriend witnessed an employee using trash from the garbage to clean the countertops in the bathroom. Is it just me or is that disgusting? This employee literally stuck their hand in the garbage and used the dirty napkins and other misc. objects in the trash to wipe down and clean the countertops/sink right in front of customers who are trying to wash their hands. I really hate giving bad reviews but I'm hoping maybe corporate will read this and make some changes or other people looking to purchase furniture will think twice. Yes this review is just for the furniture department (not just in the store but the entire experience). We purchased just under $5k worth of furniture from Macy's back in December 2017 and were told one item in our order wasn't in stock so they wouldn't deliver our order until that item came into their warehouse with an estimated delivery date of January 15th (great not bad). We paid about $3k in cash (they make you buy gift cards in $1k increments) and then the remaining 1800 would be charged on our credit card that was authorized in the store. They don't charge your card until a week before goods are to be delivered. Well we went out of the country for vacation which we communicated to them beforehand via email. They tried to charge the card- the credit card company blocked the charge because a month had passed. I then received emails and voicemails that they would cancel our order if the card didn't go through (even though they changed the delivery date to 1/18 and then again to 2/5). We went down to Macy's to pay the rest of the bill in person when we got back. The girl helping us said we can't pay the rest of the bill in cash and walked away from us it was the rudest thing I've ever witnessed. We then got a supervisor to work with us and he really did try to take the rest of our money to complete the order but he said the original salesperson had to be the one to change the order and told us when he'd be working so we could come back again. So we came back a few days later when he was supposed to be working but unfortunately he was sick that day. Luckily someone else was able to help us and got the rest of our order paid. He told us this wouldn't affect the delivery as did the previous person. We then got a call from customer service that our furniture wouldn't be delivered until 2/7 because they hadn't received the payment and they needed to charge our card. I told them we paid the entire order in the store. She told us sorry and updated their system then told us that they couldn't deliver until 2/10 because their trucks were full. At this point we're just frustrated but really want our furniture (rent is not cheap I'm SF and we light our bed our dining table and coffee table and stands) but it's okay it's only been 2 months.. we can live. On 2/10 everything was delivered which was great. Except the marble coffee table had a huge crack down the middle as did the matching end table. The delivery crew took both and called customer service who said they could bring a new one in March. We said we've been waiting since December she said it just says February in the system (because they had to recreate our order for us to pay the remainder in cash)??? Sounds like bad ERP. So we were told March 7th and they would give us a 90 dollar discount. Well I guess it's something? Well last week we received another call from customer service saying they expect our table to come into their warehouse April 18th and will call to give us an update. So that is now going to be 4 possibly 5 full months of waiting for our coffee and end table. Almost halfway into our lease; but hopefully it won't have a crack down the middle? The One star is for Lori our sales coordinator who has tried her best to keep us up to date with our progress even though it's absolutely out of her hands and not her fault. The delivery team who moved everything in without denting any walls or scraping floors etc very fast and efficient etc (they left one box of trash but not a big deal we can recycle wouldn't ding them on that) read more

I'm reviewing their personal shopping service. My shopper's name is Regina and I really like her. When selecting a shopper, looking back, I would probably request someone with a similar body type as yours. I was lucky I got regina and we both share some of the same features. It makes it easier to talk to someone who has the same body type. She has nice style and the first time I met with her she was wearing a coach dress. nice and fancy! Anyways, i have been spoiled. I really don't like shopping for myself right now. I don't like searching. Regina does all that for me. She picks out things that I normally won't pick for myself. You do end up spending a lot though. I spent more during my shopping service than I have my entire life at macys. I did buy a suit and a calvin klein dress. One thing I don't like is how they ring you up. I like watching my discounts ad up. I was told that if I use my macy's card i would get 15% off. But since i bought brand name items the discount didn't apply. If I knew this as she was ringing it up, I would have used a different credit card like my united visa or something. Went in today looking for an outfit for a cruise... I wasn't really sure I would find something until I came across the clearance secion... there are great items on those racks for less than $20. While looking around a few ladies asked if I was finding everything okay.. While paying for my items I remembered I had a coupon saved in my phone and I asked the woman if I was allowed to use it and she still gave me the 20% discount even though i didn't have the coupon printed out! That was very generous of her plus she also gave the same discount to my friend.! I never really shopped at macys but I will be going back more often for their sales..... read more

We needed a washroom break. If you enter off of Geary St. just go down the escalator and head to your right for the washroom next to the food court. A public washroom is a public washroom. We tried catching an Uber on the opposite side of the store, O'Farrell street, but didn't realize there wasn't a direct way through. At least not one that was simple enough for us to figure out in a hurry. We missed our Uber. Think floor set up is kind of tricky this way where the levels are kind of in between floors. Unfortunately Macy's has added yet another barrier to providing customer service. I buy most of my product on-line as their store in the East Bay area takes 30 minutes to drive to and has very limited selection. I returned some goods but did not have any receipt available. They gave me a lower price than I paid for it (I actually understand this as I was not able to show my receipt). They then sent me a certificate to use for shopping, which again I fully can accept. What I cannot accept is they refuse to let you use it on-line despite this being the only viable way to shop at Macy's. They literally don't carry stock in standard size products that I am looking to buy. Not to mention spending 20% of the value of the certificate in gasoline to get there and an hour of my time. Not the place to shop for Christmas or anytime, unfortunately. They used to be so good, perhaps they should follow the Nordstrom's approach here and just close their store. I was given a delicate gold bracelet from the jewelry department here for my birthday. And, despite not being a fine jewelry type person, I find I really like this one and want to wear it. However, I cannot finagle the clasp on my own and require the assistance of someone else to put it on. The someone else usually ends up being my boyfriend, P, who is out of town at the moment. And today on my way to work I passed the Macy's in Union Square as usual and remembered I had brought the bracelet in my pocket. Maybe someone other than P can help me with it. I like having P put it on for me during our morning busy-ness of getting ready to head out the door. No matter how inconvenient or obnoxiously-timed my request is, P will stop whatever he is doing, look at me, smile, gently and attentively fasten the bracelet, look at me again, and kiss me. What might be a meaningless little task is somehow suffused with incredible affection when he does it. It's really nice when someone says to you, "I love you." Which P does often enough. But it's astonishing to simply experience how deeply someone loves you without them saying a thing... and now you have probably surmised why I am always asking him to help me with the bracelet. So I have the bracelet in my pocket, possibly to have my office-mate O help me with it when I get to work. But maybe not, because it wouldn't be the same. I think I'll just keep it in my pocket, my fingers finding it and worrying it like a rosary, and ask P to do it for me when he gets back. read more

This review is basically about the Lancome counter at Macy's Union Square - and, more specifically, about the fabulously wonderful and amazingly talented Jennifer, brow artiste extraordinaire. Even if you've never given your eye brows a second thought - actually, ESPECIALLY if you've never given your eye brows a second thought -you need to go see her. Jennifer will change the way you think about eye brow grooming. I've only really had my eye brows professionally done a handful of times in my whole life, I just thought it was something I could do myself. I could not have been more wrong!!! Turns out I'd been over-tweezing and removing my natural arch for years, who knew? (Actually, just about everyone knew and didn't have the heart to tell me to get myself to a professional. Yikes.) Anyway, I'm so glad and grateful that Jennifer was there to get me back on track and on the path to perfection. She spent close to an hour with me. There was so much to do: waxing, shaping, tweezing, grooming...and then she gave me a lesson on maintenance, correction, color fill-in and how the re-shaping process will play out. She was awesome, down to earth, personable, easy to follow. And a genius at what she does. Totally gave me all the skills and materials - as well as the confidence - to get the same look at home. Plus, the bonus to getting your brows done at a department store lies in the fact that you have access to the whole line of products to help you complete the look at home. (And I sure didn't go home empty handed). The charge for the service is only $15, which means that reguar brow maintenance won't cause you to be broke and unhappy. Just gorgeous and glowing. Only really get to judge the furniture section as I don't need women clothes! Not this weekend anyway!:) It's got a wide selection of recliners including power recliners which are these days excellent. They go back almost to flat and reminds of nice business class seats on a plane. Excellent place to relax. Elsewhere the store is a smorgasbord of women's fashion. If you look hard enough theres bound to be something for everyone. But going back to the furniture section - the seats are comfy and there are plenty of them!! I want to hate Macy's. I want to, so bad. But I can't. I walk in here at the bleak end of an "I know JUST what I want" shopping day, and an hour later, I finally HAVE what I want. All of it. For like half of what I planned to spend. It's not easy. I hate the process. (To the sale racks! Dig! Dig! Dig! To the dressing room! Wait! Wait! Wait!) But insane as it all is, it works. And someone stole my idea to have a coffee shop on the 4th floor. The view is great. You can enjoy the whole union square scenery. I just heart this place so much. Macy's is a great place to go for bargain hunting, and I love to take my husband and dress him up with some good business casual clothes. He looks so good with the Perry Ellis shirts and slacks and the Aldofo shirts. I tried getting him some shoes here, but he hasn't gone for them at Macy's. I try to go during the off hours because of the crowding, but with the constant advertising and sales going on, there is not much quiet time at the Macy's. They have one day sales, Three day sales, Holiday sales, birthday sales, anniversary sales, graduation sales, season sales and *&*& day sales. Hurry! you do not want to miss out on these sales. We went at Christmas time to see the SPCA animal windows. They had just a couple windows with mostly cats, there was only 1 dog in the window and I am a dog person so was disappointed. We went inside and they had only a couple larger dogs inside so not what we were looking for, a little disappointing. The store itself was huge, I was in awe. Was great looking around. LOVE Macy's, but this Macy's.... the woman who rang us up, Raven, was awful. Trying to make a purchase with my mom for a combined three dresses. She was skeptical to ring us up, which was strike one. BUT on top of that, she did not even finish our transaction before helping another lady! What?! The whole 30-ish minutes we were at the counter, I did not get ONE smile out of her. I don't know why I keep shopping here. I guess they have a big selection of brands, so I find everything I need in one location. They put in a lot of money renovating the store front and merging with the building that was once I. Magnin. Am I dating myself? :( Winner of the world's worst customer service, I really think that if they improved on it, it would be a much better place to shop - maybe even bring back some patrons who refuse to shop there anymore because service is so poor. On any given day, you can't find anyone on staff to help you. Where is everyone? Where are they hiding? And something simple like not being on the phone in a private conversation while they're ringing you up - what an idea. They also need to fix the AC in the store as well. It's usually sweltering no matter what the weather is outside. Oddly enough, of the Macy's available in the Bay Area, this is the best one. One thing that I will give kudos for is the Christmas SPCA displays. They do a wonderful job in creating little windows for the cute kittens and puppies. This is a fantastic idea and they really do find many homes for the little darlings. I love that they've made this an annual event. read more

The store itself is fine... I go there sometimes to get a specific item (makeup, clothing item, registry gift) and it usually goes well. Four stars for that. I had the pleasure of going to the Watch Repair Department this weekend, and have the following little story to tell: Apparently, it costs $26 to get a new battery for my Tag diving watch here. OK. The gal (who was maybe 16 years old? Or I'm just ancient now, which is a distinct possibility.) told me that they did not guarantee that my watch would be waterproof after the battery change and that I should avoid showering with it on in the future. OK... So now my choice is to have a waterproof diving watch that does not tell time, or a watch that functions but must avoid getting wet. I ask her for specifics... is this the standard disclaimer that they have to make, or is she really going to ruin my watch by making it functional? She tells me that the jeweler can make it officially waterproof again after the battery change... for FIFTY ADDITIONAL DOLLARS! Ridiculous. I have her change the battery and hope that it's just the standard disclaimer thing. The next day, I realize that my watch with the lovely new battery... while it has the correct date set, is about an hour and 15 minutes slow. Is it not standard practice to set the correct time when you replace a watch battery for $26? Criminy! Two stars! read more

Macy's is more than the store itself for some reason...it's the experience of shopping there as well. Well, duh, the store is 100 years older than I am, so I'd like to think they put SOME thought into it all. OK- the merch is overwhelmingly either very conservative or very frivolous, and most of the prices are out of my league. But there are always sales and discounts to warm the heart of any age any size bargain hunter. I'm a clothes modifier by default. Off the rack stuff never fits, or they're out of my size or color, whatever, so I take my purchases with a bit of slack and keep a set of parameters in mind: price limit and I'll hem vs need now vs must wear well or time for an upgrade, you get the picture? I've been looking for a spring jacket since all I have is a schmatte, and I'm off to visit my in-laws. Time has run out . I gave 5 different Ross's and 2 Targets the first 7 shots. Nothing. I remembered that there's a parking garage RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from Macy's Union Sq., so I did a little Give It To Me Dance and jumped on the highway from the East Bay. I walked out of the parking garage, setting a timer on my phone for the first hour of parking at $2.50, relieved that if I really need to bump to 1-2 hours for $5, that'd be ok too. Macy's is directly across the street, (did I mention that it's directly across the street?) and there's a floor list immediately on the left in the entry. Within a half hour of my original decision to go, I was on my way to the 3rd floor for ladies restroom and petites. It took about 15 min to browse the racks for my size, cut, color and price. The one remaining contender jumped into my hot little shopper hands and, yes, it was very much on sale. Dude, it rang up as even more on sale. On my way back to the car, my first-hour parking timer went off, which made me totally smile. If I'd been with a friend, I would have raised a fist and said yesssssssssssssssss.
