Lots of folks like to participate in Macys bashing. Given some of the service I've had over the years I can't blame them. In the past two years I've noticed a significant improvement in service. So much so, I've decided to write a review. Returns: great policy and I've never had a hassle. Price adjustments: willing adjust prizes with coupons within specified time period. Sales: always sending me those coupons to combine with those markdowns on the sales racks. Suck me in every time! Shoe department: sales staff is helpful when they aren't slammed beyond capacity. Selection: stuck looking for a dress, shoes, accessories or a gift? I usually can find something to fill the void here. Oh, and how could I forget! Housewares. Macys Union Square has won me back. Plus, it makes me a bit nostalgic of shopping trips to Macys Herald Square with Grandma back when I was a wee bit. I must also note I've found a similar quality of service at the shoe departments in Corte Madera and San Rafael. read more

I swear sometimes that nobody works here. It can be nearly impossible to get a pair of shoes to try on. If someone does try to get you some shoes chances are they wont be able to find the other one. I swear this has happened more than once. They do get an extra star for awesome sale racks. read more

This is honestly probably one of the best Macy's I have ever been to. Why you ask? Let me tell you... First of all...it's huge! Multiple floors filled with wares of every sort. Purses, jewelry, lingerie, housewares...where do we begin??? Actually...we began in the basement which is where the food court is. I loved the selection and the best part??? The digital soda fountain!!! Life does NOT get better then THIS! I swear my husband and I drank a ton of soda just so we could keep returning to the dispenser and try a new concoction. While at this Macy's you MUST make a stop and try it out. One disappointment...the food service area was NOT clean. There was food on the floor and wrappers strewn about. It was the end of the day and many counters were closing up shop (some early, I might add) but, I would still expect an establishment of this nature to clean. Onward and upward we went...literally...browsing through the purses I found there to be a huge selection with the usual Macy's discounts. The customer service in this department was really exceptional. The staff was friendly, willing to help and the area was clean and well organized. I also really liked the fact that this place was open later than most of the other stores in the area. I was so disappointed in how early everything else closed on a Saturday evening. If you are on the hunt for something in particular or just want to shop a little later than the other stores afford you the opportunity to check out this Macy's. My friend and I went a on a crazy shopping spree over the weekend at Macy's. The mood was frantic, but enjoyable because: a) we were on a time crunch...only 2.5 hours! b) there were racks upon racks of sale items c) there was a extra 15% off sale items because of Veteran's Day and an extra 10% off regular priced items because of the Foreigner's Passport. This madness had all the ingredients for heading down a frustrating path. But it didn't because the sales people were SO GREAT and PATIENT. We averaged 20 items each time we went into the change room, and they had no problem with that. They came in every few minutes to make sure we were okay, and whether we needed different sizes. They made some great suggestions and even suggested we sign up for a Macy's card to save another 20%! Thanks Ania, Donna and Carla for making crazy sale shopping a pleasant experience! read more

This is where I go for bargains - and yes, there are so many here that paying full price is almost laughable. There is a sale going on practically every weekend or else you can find a discount somewhere. The big thing about Macy's is you have to know how to work it. It's so big that the only way to navigate through it and buy anything with your head on straight is only if you know what you are looking for and where to find it. So why do I give it four stars? Because I, for better or worse, am one of the people who know how to shop Macy's San Francisco - and it's totally a personal thing. Like, I know how not to ask the personnel for help because they are just as lost as the average person in this place. No, I've never worked here, I just grew up shopping here and everytime I thought I had outgrown or tired of Macy's I've stumbled on something new that I like. It's like growing up with a store - somehow they've always been able to suit my needs and changing tastes, and budget - whatever that may be. This place is GIGANTIC! huge store with A LOT of choices. The sales are great and the selection is awesome. We had a great associate help us out with our questions and our purchases- her name is Janet and she works on the Second floor by Tahari and Marc Jacobs! Janet helped us shop from beginning to end, making sure we knew where the sales were and finding us the right sizes in the clothes we wanted to purchase. It was a bit overwhelming because the place is split up into so many levels, but after a couple of hours we started to get the hang of it. We basically stayed on the first, second, and third floor and were really excited about our purchases. The staff is clueless and will send you back and forth from one wrong floor to the next, if they bother to acknowledge you at all... And for the same price, you can get star treatment and better ambiance at Nordstrom... Five floors of women's clothes, almost a city block? If you're looking for clothes for any occasion, this Macy's has it. The mens' store is much better, and the staff there is helpful. read more

I sat here for 2 hours on a circular sectonal on the 5th floor of Macy's furniture department talking with my friend. It was nice and definately a fun place to hang out than a park bench in Union Square. For an unconventional idea to hang out on a weekday. read more

This place is okey. Good view from the top. Cheesecake factory is good during the holiday season. Gets packed in there. Feels like your in a club. In fact after you eat a few cheesecakes and have a few drinks it feels like an acid trip. Then head down one story to the furniture section and take a nap on one of the couches until the store attendant tells you to gtfo b/c they are closing. I like the food court at the bottom. Pretty crappy selection and quality, but decent for the price. Don't like the quality of the stuff they sell, so I don't really by clothes or furniture here. If the rest of the store is anything like their fine watches department, I need to shop here more often. A few weeks ago I decided to splurge on a nice self-winding automatic watch with some of my unexpectedly grand tax refund. Damned if five weeks later, the thing didn't start acting up, stopping and starting for minutes or hours at a time even when worn 24x7. I brought it in to sales associate Lily, expecting to be without it for 6-8 weeks while it was serviced. Instead she swapped it on the spot for a new one, since they happened to have the exact same model in stock. On an item costing this much, an exchange like that has a non-trivial cost for the store. Clearly they've decided that customer service is important to their bottom line. Bravo. read more

The nicest Macy's on this coast. Nicest as in best location, best selection and best building. Customer service? No no no. I might be a bit picky about CS because I used to be one so I know how to treat customers (and potential customers). This one FAILS. *pulls out race card* Maybe because I'm not carrying 6 stuffed bags from [random designer shop] when I come in. Maybe I'm actually looking at the prices when I shop. Maybe it's because I'm not white, rich or fabulous looking. I'm sorry. But maybe just maybe, the next time I walk in to your department, I don't get snubbed for some (probably fake) Louis Vuitton toting girl that's behind me. Yeah that's right you peroxide potato head. The women's shoe department is huge! The jewelry department is something else too - considering this is a 'chain' store. This particular Macy's is just huge all around. Long gone from the neighborhood are old time favorites like I Magnin, City of Paris, and Joseph Magnin. This Macy's has grown and expanded from what it used to be when I used to walk up here, shop, and dash back to work in the financial district years ago. Like I said, the shoe department is something else - I feel like a kid in a candy store; it is so expansive - dizzying displays of shoes/boots/sandals. Every imaginable shoe you could possibly want is here. Well, almost. Definitely worth a visit (but not during the holidays when its horrible, hot, and over crowded). read more

Well, it's Macy's. Delightfully overwhelming for a Macy's. Walk in from one entrance, and you will be greeted with a bombarding amount of perfume samples. Walk in from another entrance, and you will be in Makeup Heaven. Walk in from another, ... and so on and so forth. The shoe section. Searched high and low for uggs (after staring at them year after year, and telling myself it's NOT that worth it for sheepskin, etc etc etc etc), and they were no where to be found. My friend, who works at Macy's assured me I would NOT find them here... really, I didn't know Macy's didn't carry uggs. They sell "Bearpaw"... $69.99 (ONE DAY SALE!!) , is that good? You are better off looking elsewhere for products found in Macy's since their quality of service has completely fallen off the grid. I ordered a love-seat, table & exorbitantly priced couch which I called the salesperson to cancel the next day which he told me he did. On delivery day, the couch arrived with a badly gauged table (which the delivery men blamed on the packers in China)... they said they would reorder, but when I called back for the status was told the order was cancelled and they still charged a ridiculous $140 to deliver... I am a fan of Macy's, especially Macy's Union Square. I love this store because of the variety of merchandise. All senses are stimulated by this magnificent landmark. When I joined the work-force in a very formal setting and my attire needed a conservative face-lift I turned to Macy's. Once a week, as a treat I found the right pieces to make me look great without bankruptcy. Macy's is all inclusive; the older shopper and the younger shoppers are able to find their hearts desire. A day of shopping might leave one with quite an appetite, the Cellar boasts many options and if that is not enough, the Cheesecake Factory on the 7th Floor is always a treat. I used to like Macy's - I really did! But I have never had as bad a shopping experience as I did today... The (slightly older) sales associate at Michael Kors (1st floor) has no concept of customer service! I was returning a top I'd bought a week ago, and she demanded to know why the garment had the wrong tag on it. I don't know - I just bought it - shouldn't you be telling me that??! So she consults someone else, who then affirms that the garment has the wrong tag on it, and looks to me for an explanation. I had the receipt and the garment with all tags still attached - how is it my problem that their garment has the wrong tag?? Finally, after making me wait over 5 min., I finally asked "What would you like me to do?" She begrudgingly did the return for me. One floor up, I found a couple of tops I liked and was about to purchase, when the sales lady asked if I'd like to open up a Macy's account for an extra 20% off... BIG mistake!! It took her 10 min. just to obtain my personal info (I must've repeated & spelled out my address 5 times), then she tells me I don't have the right forms of ID that will be accepted by the system. Basically, this lady was nice - but incredibly incompetent! It took me 20 min. of standing there to find out that I wasn't approved for the Macy's card, so I couldn't get the discount. By then, I was so fed up, I just left without buying anything! I agree that Macy's has gone downhill... Many of the staff working there are now either rude or incompetent - not a happy combo!! By contrast, the customer service at Victoria's Secret is always exceptional - even during super-busy sale times... Makes me want to buy from them - I recommend going to VS for all your lingerie needs. For everything else, try anywhere but Macy's. read more

Best Shopping Experience Ever! And I hate to shop! I have to tell Macy's you have done one outstanding job of counseling your staff on many levels! We went the day after Christmas which I had never done before.... Everyone we dealt with was totally informed of all the discounts we could get, so courteous, even when I had to call my credit card company to get them to release my fraud alert...she said it happens all the time. Made me feel better at least. I felt like we bought out the department because of the great service we received!!! Then went downstairs to eat lunch and the staff there was even more impressive, happy and helpful. Macy's, my hat is off to making my hated shopping a joyful experience. You have a customer for life! This review is for the mattress department. I visited the store recently to try out mattress options I'd been reading about online. There was a decent selection of mattress in a box options (like Casper and Leesa) in addition to the standards (TempurPedic). It was clean and staff sanitized after we tested a few out. Mainly, I want to give a positive recommendation for Gabe Gutierrez. He offered assistance but gave us space to try options without hovering or putting any pressure on to make a purchase. He was super knowledgeable about the various companies and product construction. We ended up falling in love with an option not carried by Macy's. Otherwise we could have come back to make a purchase through Gabe, even for an option easily ordered direct online. read more

If there was a ZERO rating - I'd give it x 10. I'd heard Macy's was selling counterfeit Levis and didn't want to believe it until I had to return a new pair of 550s that my girlfriend bought me from the Macy's in Capitola CA. After one washing they ripped - in the oddest place in the seat. The garment was clearly defective and anyone could see it - and after closer inspection, not well made. I've never had a new pair of Levis - from Macy's of all places be defective. But I figured they'd take care of me seeing my gf paid like $60 w/tax. But Macy's in Capitola, Ca. must be THE most understaffed and (retail ignorant) store in the bunch. One sales rep for the entire clothing section. She was very nice and did what she could to help, but because the issue wasn't quite in her wheel-house, she called her surfer-pup of a manager. He must have been all of 16. Long story short, he didn't know crap about taking care of a retail customer that paid full price and couldn't say anything but, "Sorry, dude, we can't take these back". OMG. They still had the plastic "thing" that pokes you if you don't remove it. The pants had every indication they came from Macy's: Lot and dye numbers; all the tricky things that Macy's inputs to make sure they came from Macy's - and they did. The Rep lady said they did. But I reckon the they missed the counterfeit part because I've NEVER had a new pair of Levis jeans do this - and be treated so badly. NEVER again will we buy overpriced clothing fro Macy's. read more

This review is specific to my dress shopping experience at Macy's Union Square and is specific to the customer service in the dress department. It's a review for thegorgeous girls who have imperfect bodies that may not fit into the average size dresses. If this is you, read on. If not, you won't understand. I've been on the search for a semi-formal dress for a couple of weddings coming up. I'm a girlie girl who likes to look pretty but to find something like that that is reflective of my age and still fits my body is a feat in itself. Though I may not wear a size 2 or 10 or plus some that doesn't mean I should forsake my sense of style, comfort, and beauty. I am still a woman who deserves the same respect and attention. So, you can imagine the horror when I went to Macy's Union Square thinking SF will have a large selection of dresses for me to choose from because SF is that kind of cosmopolitan place. When I approached one of the customer service people and asked for my dress size area she sized me up and down with her eyes, gave me a disapproving look, and said loudly "OH, for people YOUR size.... you're in the corner WAY WAY WAY over there". Gee, could you have been a little more kind and treated me like any other person?!?! So, I wandered over to my designated little corner and found about 5 dresses that were extremely formal (we're talking sequins, taffeta, and a whole lot of tulle to hold it all up) and completely inappropriate for most wedding attire (unless you're in the party and the wedding begins at 8pm). I suppose if I was a beauty queen getting ready for the runway, these dresses might have been appropriate or if I wanted to look like a grandmother I could have chosen one of them. Appalling and offensive to the woman who has a larger body. i've always liked clothes as Macy's. They have a large variety of style to chose from. Went there to buy a suit for a friends wedding and the guy helping was very convincing. He made me feel good in the suit i was trying on, and the same with all my friends. 4 went in there to buy suits but 6 of us came out buying them. We found my friend's daughter's dress for a wedding here. They have a beautiful, age appropriate selection of little girl dresses. There's a few dresses that were somewhat inappropriate, very slinky, but most of the dresses were lovely. Sales people were not always really helpful, but they were pleasant enough. The store is fairly clean and well organized. read more

Macy's is awesome....in terms of their return policies and price adjustments you never have a difficult time here. I always buy my designer jeans here it's so worth it esp since if you go elsewhere you'll most likely pay full price for them. They always have some sort of coupon or sale. read more

2nd largest Macy's store in the world so this is indeed a flagship store. Went in but was too overwhelmed at the size of the store and the amount of stuff they have, so didn't stay long. There's a food court on the lower level that's pretty good, whether you're looking for a meal or just a snack. The food court includes a Boudin's, Ben and Jerry's, Auntie Anne's and a salad place that was pretty tasty read more

Great place to do a wedding registry! They make you feel really welcome and offer you tons of deals, although it is HUGE and quite overwhelming. And coming here doesn't eliminate the need to review and edit your registry online later, both because the selection is so different/much larger, and because their scanners are pretty difficult to use. We couldn't delete items or review our registry while in the store, and no one is trained to use the scanners besides the registry staff. Other than that, our Macy's registry is definitely the largest and has the most basic items out of the places we registered! read more

I recently completed a watch repair service through Macy's and I thought it was great! They were friendly and quick and even provided a warranty for the battery. It was nice to be able to take care of this along with other errands at Macy's. read more

I have never been to a 7-8 story Macy's store!!! o_O It's pretty awesome that each floor is designated to a specific category (e.g. one floor has furniture, another floor has juniors clothing, another floor has shoes and handbags, and so forth). I easily spent over an hour here and I found it to be pretty neat. Everything was so organized and there were sales left and right. The cashier was really nice too. :) I will go here the next time I wanna burn some time or simply need some retail therapy! read more

I used to be astonished when all the Chinese guys wanted to shop at Macy's for lunch. But, all in all, it's a solid department store. Often I have found things I needed, like underwear and belts. Also, for several years the Calvin Klein boutique carried some really hot lingerie. Naughty boy, Calvin! Cheap jewelry to give to my nieces. A really good watch repair station in customer service. Oh, and Lancome makes absolutely the best, most healing face creme on the planet. Just before we were married we went to Macy's to check out housewares. We settled on Lenox, Wedgwood and Towle. This clerk appeared out of nowhere and spent half the day helping us pick out matching sets. After that day he disappeared and we've never seen him again. So yes, Macy's is a good store sometimes. Update 12/16/2006: Naughty Calvin Klein is back! Check out all his wonderful clothing -- he is taking this season for his own again. I love this designer! read more

I really like this Macy's. We don't come here much, because it's downtown and parking and yada yada, but they have a great selection because the place is huge. And today they had... dancers. Of all things. Anyway, I've been through the women's clothing and ended up with a weird selection of socks that became conversation pieces at work (on purpose). And today we were in the watch department and found the husband a great watch for his birthday (after realizing the watches were just way too fancy for his style at Nordstroms and Bloomingdales). Service was good to begin with, but then after browsing the other watches and returning we had to wait a loooong time to be helped again (even though some counter people were just standing around and talking... we thought they were in another "section" until one of them came over to help). Macy's. I'm a self-avowed sale whore, and I've spent many an hour here waiting for something I covet to go on sale. This week: shoes. Needed a new pair for a wedding. Shoes are an endless source of trauma for me. I wear an 11. Many times, I want to strap two planks of wood to my feet and call it a day. Sadly, that doesn't help my plantar fasciitis. Strangely, heels do somewhat. Friday, something happened. I had actual sales assistance. I saw teamwork in effect. The gentleman who asked me what I was looking for, brought the shoes I wanted to try on, and then passed me to another woman, because he was actually done with work for the day. I don't shop at Macy's very often, but here's a great tip for those of you who drive to Union Square and hate looking for parking: Macy's will validate your Union Square Parking Garage ticket for up to 3 hrs.
