Had a good experience at Mad Nice. We had a reservation at 1 and the restaurant was relatively empty but we still had to wait 20+ minutes to be seated despite showing up right on time for the reservation. I don't understand why this took as long as it did since they didn't seem slammed or short staffed. Regardless, once we were sat our server was great and very friendly and knowledgeable on the menu. We ordered the potato appetizer and it was very good and unique. We got three pizzas, margarita, farm green, and sausage and olive. All were very tasty and it was a good amount of food for 5 people. The scissors were super fun and a good touch. My second disappointment was how long it took to get drinks. We just were drinking water and coke but it took 10+ minutes to get the cokes and to get water refills - overall the pacing was just super slow. We weren't in a rush and enjoyed the food and ambiance so I am not left with a bad experience but I would give 5 stars had we been seated and gotten our beverages faster! I'm always sympathetic of slower service when the restaurant is slammed during peak hours but given it was a weekday afternoon and there was only a handful of other tables around us it seemed like there was no reason for things to go as slowly as they did. Maybe it's just part of the concept to have it more spaced out too, I'd budget 2 hours of time to dine here. I've been wanting to try this place for the longest time as it looks super cute in the photos and I love pizza and pasta. I finally got to try this place and was amazed how prettier the place looks in person. And the service was top notch! We had an issue with our table and we decided to switch to a booth and they were very understanding and accommodating. The server we had was really great too. On to the food, the pizza were disappointing. We had the shrooms and clam bake. They were okay. A little flavorless. The dough was a little dry too. I've had better brick oven pizza that tasted better somewhere else. But the pasta I had which was Rigatoni ragout was really delicious! Very tasty. My friends ordered the other pasta dish: bucatini cacio e Pepe, duck pasta cavetelli and king crab casarecce and we all agreed that the rigatoni tasted best. The drinks came out looking pretty cute but I did not really care for the taste. Overall, this place is average food wise. I feel like they put more effort in the aesthetic of the interior but not so much in the food. Maybe I'll give this place another try on the future and order something else beside pizza and pasta. I love mushrooms and was disappointed because the mushrooms themselves didn't have a ton of flavor. The pizza toward the center had a wettish texture. For the pastas, we got BUCATINI CACIO E PEPE and RIGATONI RAGOUT. The ragout was nice with a rich sauce. The Bucatini was ok- it was garlicky and cheesy but tasted like something I'd make at home. If this review was just based on the service and atmosphere I'd give it 5 but unfortunately the food left a lot to be desired. We tried the cacio e Pepe and found the sauce watery and lacking in flavor. We also got the potato frittos and they were under salted although the texture was great. All that aside the team here was very accommodating, took our feedback and comped our meal. We were seated at the bar and the bartender immediately got a manger when we said we didn't enjoy our food. Although the food was comped we did tip the bartender because that was truly great service and not something other restaurants would do. All in all I'd come back if they work out the kinks in their menu, and if nothing else it's a beautiful restaurant with a large cocktail menu so would make a fun girls night. read more

I've had a chance to dine at Mad Nice on two occasions, sampling all of their food from pizza to pasta to fried potatoes, bread with homemade butter, and of course who can forget the Zeppoli? Truly, each and every dish we tried is something I'd order again. Mad Nice also features a full cocktail menu of California, Italy, and Detroit inspired concoctions for you to choose among. The atmosphere does live up to what you're seeing on Instagram- a hip, pastel interior and staff in crisp white jumpsuits. The ambiance is definitely unique compared to other restaurants in metro Detroit. Music might be a bit loud for some, but we had no issues chit chatting above the sound. Highly recommend making reservations online in advance. It also looked like there were two private rooms available for booking if you have a larger party. I arrived early and decided to go in and have a cocktail. So glad I did! Detroit Aristocratic Club was the suggested drink by Devin. I perused the other cocktail options as well, but got the DAC. Wow. It was perfectly balanced, not too sweet nor sour. The bar staff, Devon, Mia, and a third lovely lady were top notch. They checked in, refilled my water and offered another cocktail which I declined and cashed out with Devon. I waited at the hostess stand for the rest of my party. They mentioned once everyone arrived They would seat us. It was early and not terribly busy yet, so they could have seated me, but it gave me time to take in more decor and people watching. This is a hip, trendy spot that one guest in my party said looked like Willy Wonka threw up. Another said they wanted sorbet after seeing the mint and pink decor. We were seated and told Lisa would be our server. We settled on cocktails and appetizers. A party of 4 foodies, and we tried as many as we could. Sourdough bread is room temp, but the butter and olive oil spread perfectly. I've seen it mentioned that it would be better warm and I agree. Soft eggs bursts flavors I cannot explain, but I highly recommend you try them. They are served with toasted bread. The Sour Pancake was my personal favorite part of the meal. Oysters were fresh and delicious, served with house hot sauce and a lovely mignonette. Then the main course...we are already full buy still have things we came to try. I got a Clam bake Pizza. We also had Shrooms, Margherita and a pasta dish that was to die for. That is the only item I did not catch the name of. But I'd say it is a beautiful buttery, garlic and pepper seasoned pasta. Very tasty. We literally could not do coffee nor dessert. Exceptional service made up for the one issue, our table wobbled a bit. Made a reservation for 6 people using Resy as directed by Mad Nice's website. I do not recall seeing an email or text asking me to confirm the day before -- if there was one, I missed it. Resy alerted me 1 hour before on the day of the reservation -- I canceled 1 hour before the reservation. Mad Nice billed me $150 ($25 per person). I contacted the restaurant, and they are refusing to refund. It's a lot of money for me not even getting to experience the restaurant. I'm surprised they didn't cut the bill in half, or offer me a gift card to eat there in the future. Not planning on ever eating here again. read more

This review is really a 3.5/3.75, but obviously Yelp hates decimals and fractions. : ) We tried Mad Nice for the first time last night. First things first, there is no sign. I have no idea why, because the place is huge, it's not some speakeasy thing, and very nicely appointed, so it's not like they couldn't afford signage. Even a small sign would be helpful. If it's a vibe thing, maybe take away the plastic valet sign cones out front. So that was kind of odd. The hosting staff was friendly, and granted we were like twenty minutes early to our reservation, so we knew if it was full, we would have to wait closer to our reservation time, which is fine. And that's what they said, as well. But there were several two-top tables available, but I figured maybe they have other reservations waiting for them. So we waited about 15 minutes to be seated. Even though those tables remained empty for the entire time we waited. And further, the table two down from us once we were seated, remained empty for another 40 minutes. So we just stood around like morons, leaning on a window sill, because there was no seating to wait, for a table that was open the entire time we waited. It didn't set a great tone. Next, I want to mention first impressions based on the uniforms they chose the hosts and servers to wear. The hosts were wearing pastel pink coverall flight suits. Like a mechanic or army pilot would wear. Like pastel Top Gun. And the servers were wearing white denim jackets buttoned all the way up as shirts and white jeans. The look was really trying too hard to be trendy, and it came off kinda lame. I'm not sure if I'm paying $26 for Pizza Margherita that I want to be served by someone in a white denim tuxedo. Also, there was a faint hint of "merry asylum" to the uniforms and decor. Like if you were a well-to-do family at the turn of the last century you would send your "hysterical" daughter there to be treated for "exhaustion." Maybe that's the "mad" part of Mad Nice. And when the host, who was very friendly, said in earnest, your "service artist" will be with you shortly, I did not have high hopes. It was all so post-modern gimmicky. But thankfully, our "service artist" was actually just an incredibly friendly and totally unpretentious woman who made our dinner really lovely. She genuinely added to the enjoyment of the experience. She was very attentive without being overbearing (the acme of service in my opinion,) coursed everything out perfectly, and was very personable and welcoming. The food runner was also very friendly as well. Now the food. We ordered several dishes to try a broad swath of the menu. Everything was good actually, a lot less gimmicky than I initially feared. Their "four-ingredient sourdough" was clearly emphasized in the pregame spiel. (I was a server for a lot of years, so I know a management-required spiel when I hear one) to the point where I quipped to my husband if pretension was one of the four ingredients. But the Pizza Margherita was very tasty, and cooked well, nice blend of oregano and basil on the top. It was one of my favorite dishes of the night. The chopped little gem salad was very delicious, and refreshing. And the everything sourdough "pancake" (its more like chewy bread in a pancake shape) was surprisingly interesting and palatable. My other favorite was the broccoli with this seedy crunch and nori aioli. It reminded me of the flavors of the togarashi broccoli at the now defunct Otis Supply. The potato fritto needed acid, it was served with some kind of mayonnaise, so it was fat on top of fat on top of starch, and the texture of the potato itself was somewhat unpleasant. The Gorgonzola dolce pizza was a little too sweet, it had too much jam and not enough savory bite of the Gorgonzola, but it was fine. And the sourdough garganelli was okay, but I thought it would be more eggplant forward, and it wasn't. Also, it was extra sour. Like you already have the slight sour flavor of the sourdough pasta, which if you love pasta, is not going to make you happy, and then the other elements they added in also were sour. Sort of like eating pickled pasta. Pasta should bring you to a level of ecstasy, and this did not. It was kinda weird. The desserts were both good, and interesting; the citrus panna cotta and the butterscotch gelato ice cream sandwich. We had initially ordered the budino, but they were out of it. But we enjoyed both of them. Overall, I would come back, and get pizza and that salad, and dessert and be happy. read more

I'm setting aside the off putting dress code blurb on resy, it was a lot to feel like they had to say all of that for a place that has pizza on the menu, but I understand they have cali roots. Best dish of the night was the pork shoulder ragu- the meat was very creamy/melted in your mouth and had a generous amount of cheese on top. So the question is "How long do you wait for a Restaurateur group or location to respond to a legitimate issue? Please note, posted on the owner group website is "Every second Counts" and "Consistently Care about the Smallest Details" they are pretty words, but very poorly executed. Over 72 hours ago I purchased a $200 gift card. I see the charge on my credit card, but the recipient had to contact me to let me know it never arrived and the confirmation number shows "under review". I spoke to Mad Nice on Saturday and I was ASSURED a manager would call me that afternoon, but alas no call. I have tried to call Heirloom Hospitality but their voicemail has been full since my first call Saturday at 2:00 and it is now Tuesday at 12:30. I have emailed hello@madnicedetroit who has responded to all less than perfect posts on Yelp how much she appreciates the feedback and is So sorry, but she hasn't replied either. I have also emailed Heirloom Hospitality directly. Five months ago Jen L complained about the exact same issue, I believe, and though the response was a "commitment to resolve" surprisingly it is not. So after two emails and no less than 15 calls to resolve with NO response I will post here. read more

I overheard the table next to us be given the option of "tap" water for no charge. We were offered sparkling or still. We chose still, with no mention of the $5 charge. This is written no where and our server gave us no heads up for this charge. It really caught us off guard when we got our bill! Ah, now that I got that out.... Our food and service was great. The chilled lobster appetizer was to die for. Would come back for that alone. The rigatoni was delicious! We got the margherita pizza and it was ok. The pizza is absolute fire. Best Neapolitan in the entire state. However, they have a lame "no hat" policy that rubbed me the wrong way upon entry. Seriously? Could you be more pretentious? This was at 115p on a weekday and the restaurant was only a quarter full. This place has great food but the attitude has to come down a notch. I literally can not remember the last place that had a no hat policy, even Michelin star spots I've been to let you wear a hat. And while it's not the end of the world to take off my hat, it just left a bad taste in my mouth about their attitude. Not to mention that their entire open kitchen staff is WEARING HATS. Get over yourself. Your food is great but don't think that means you can be a snot about it. Such a cute restaurant inside and a great place for a date night or dinner with friends. Our server was super friendly and attentive. Went with two friends and we shared a couple sides, two pastas and a pizza along with the gelato dessert. Was more than enough food for us and it was nice to try a variety. Our favorites were the rigatoni ragout and cacio e pepe. Potatoes and shishito peppers were really flavorful and cooked perfectly as well. We got the shrooms pizza and I think it would've been better had the bottom not been so charred. It was just a little too much that it tasted bitter. Cocktail and drink options are plentiful too. I loved my mushroom pizza, spritz drinks, and I tried my friends cacio e pepe too and it was so good.
