The BEST seafood market in Raleigh! I wouldn't shop anywhere else. I lived on the Gulf Coast in Texas for thirty years and am accustomed to super fresh seafood. So, I am very particular. On the Gulf Coast, it is customary to buy seafood directly from the fishermen. They have refrigerated trucks parked on the highway, loaded with freshly caught fish and shrimp. So, I actually prefer to shop for seafood this way because I know it's super fresh. This is how Madden's Seafood operates, transporting seafood "from the ocean to you" in a highly refrigerated truck. The seafood is picked up at the end of each week from Topsail Beach, transported in their refrigerated truck and then sold directly to you. So, you know it's super fresh. I have tried every high-end grocery and seafood store in Raleigh but I have always been disappointed. They offer seafood which is not so fresh. The mealy texture and questionable taste tells me so. You don't know how long it's been stored somewhere, maybe in a warehouse or two? Maybe not kept refrigerated the whole time, stored on a cart somewhere at the back of the store? As I said, I am very particular. Madden's is not a chain store but a locally owned gem of a business. I have been shopping at Madden's Seafood for about eight years, usually every week. I truly believe that everyone who loves seafood should shop there exclusively. I pre-order on their website and pick up on Friday or Saturday. Or you can take a chance and shop at their stand on those days. Their website is easy to use, and each week they offer an amazingly wide variety of seafood. Not only is their seafood super fresh, but it is quite clean, filleted, and individually packaged in ziplock bags, packed with ice upon request. I must say that the service is exceptional, too. Grant the owner, with helpers Jack and Mateo are a great bunch of friendly folks, hard-working and dedicated to their business. They go out of their way to consistently provide the highest quality, best selection and service available. I am very grateful to them. I must add that Madden's Seafood may be a bit tricky to find the first time but easy after that. Look for a sign on the road and a stand with a truck. Their stand is conveniently located on Honeycutt Road, directly behind the service station on the corner of Falls of Neuse Road and Honeycutt. Soon after moving from Indiana to NC, Madden's was recommended to us by locals. After visiting their Saturday market, we understand why. They were so kind and helpful as we asked a ton of questions. We took home some snow crab legs and crab cakes that were absolutely delicious!! They also have an online mailing list so you can find out what will be at the weekend market and make requests. Love the fish and shell seafood that Scott brings to Raleigh. He answers his emails promptly and always delivers on my requests. The dried scallops are the best I have ever had. The North Carolina shrimp are awesome and he will post the head count per pound because it changes from week to week. All the seafood is so fresh. I have had the grouper, cod, scallops, shrimp and clams and they have always been fresh and delicious. You cannot go wrong with anything that Scott offers. I grew up in New England and I got used to having great seafood available everywhere. I just assumed that unless you lived in Iowa or something that awesome fish could be had almost everywhere in this country, especially in a state that sits on the Atlantic ocean, but I was wrong. For the longest time I had been disappointed in every supermarket I had purchased fish from in Raleigh, including Harris Teeter's, Fresh Market & Whole Foods. Enter Scott Madden of Madden's Seafood. Scott's is a one or two man operation that opens up on Friday's between noon and 6:30 and Saturday's between 10:00-3:00 in a parking area off of Honeycutt Road, across from Lafayette Village. You have to place your order with him by phone or email by noon on Thursday and then he goes to the coast and brings back the freshest fish in town. He always has extra fish and shellfish on hand, but it's best to preorder to get exactly what you want. I stumbled upon Madden's Seafood while driving down the road one day a few years ago and saw the signs along the street advertising various types of fresh fish. I kind of chuckled the first time I saw the signs because I was relatively new to North Carolina and wondered why anyone would buy seafood from some guy on the side of the road when other retail options were available. That was before I had tried the fresh seafood from just about every market in the area and been disappointed by all of them. Finally after driving by Madden's Seafood for the third or fourth time I decided to stop in and take a look. What could it hurt to see what the guy had? It certainly couldn't be any worse than all the other stores nearby. That first visit was over four years ago and I have been exclusively going to Scott Madden for my fresh seafood ever since. It is by FAR the freshest fish available in the area. I love to cook. I'm a total foodie and I treat every meal like it was my last, so I want only the best. I don't know what we would have done if we hadn't found Madden's. My guess is that I just wouldn't be eating fish while I lived in Raleigh. I'd really rather go without than settle for a lower quality. So today is Thursday and I just got Scott's weekly email this morning listing all the fish that will be for sale tomorrow and Saturday. Here's a copy and pasted list of this week's posting: "Last Minute Catch: Lots of local fish this week. Sorry no Red Snapper or Drum. We can get Spots and Sea Mullet. They are sold whole. Local Yellowfin Tuna, Grouper, Trigger, Wahoo, Golden Tile, Black Sea Bass and Speckled Trout. We have some beautiful Jumbo fresh Shrimp. Great prices too. If anyone wants Lobster Tails let me know as soon as you can. Our Sweet Sea Scallops are awesome. No preservatives or Chemicals. Just fresh. The Oysters in the shell are from Stump Sound.
