The famous Maddox! I haven't been here in years. Recently went here & it did not disappoint! The complimentary rolls & corn bread with their special raspberry butter is to die for. They unfortunately didn't have the impossible steak for a vegetarian option but were able to make me a veggie plate. The vegetables were really good & they made the best little sautéed mushrooms I've ever had in my life! My dad had the chicken fried steak & he was in heaven with that. We LOVE the strawberry pie except today. Both pieces of pie tasted like they were made with old strawberries. The trout was dry, the chicken breast was tough and chewy and the sirloin steak was tough as shoe leather. Worst meal we've ever had at Maddox. BUT we will be back. Been coming here since I was young, the food is always good, great steaks, and the bison entrees are always good. Love their salads and rolls and corn bread. Always friendly service and make sure to not miss on your birthday, you'll get a free slice of their delicious pies of your choice. This is one of those locally-loved tourist destinations that all visitors go to at least once. Seven of us went because the locals all said you "have to" go to Maddox Ranch House. I have to start off by saying the service was over-the-top excellent. The server was attentive, knew when we needed boxes, and even offered a to-go cup for my half-drunk soda, and even filled it up the rest of the way. The food was so-so. My filet was rough-tender. But it came with no salt or seasoning of any kind. Others got sirloins and commented on the plainness. One woman had been there before and ordered the shrimp steak -- white shrimp mixed with turkey. All meals came with potato choice, carrots and broccoli, and rolls served with raspberry butter. We were there at lunchtime and, even on a weekday, the large restaurant had no problem filling up. It's been there over 70 years and uses its own cattle from the family-owned ranch. Maddox is legendary, so is still a popular go-to place in the area. But my group expressed no desire to return. They felt the experience was been-there-done-that. read more

I took my elderly parents here for lunch on a Saturday. There was no wait and we were seated immediately. I got the petite filet mignon lunch and they shared the top of Maddox meal. They were able to achieve a beautiful crust on the steaks and they were pull-apart tender. It was a tad on the salty side for me, but I tend to eat less salty than most, so I'm sure it would be perfect for most. There was a lot of food and we all still had leftovers to take home. I really don't understand the hype, or the prices. For starters, yes, the rolls & raspberry honey butter are amazing. And that's pretty much where it ends. We drove about 90 minutes to experience the restaurant that continually appears on lists of must-try Utah establishments. We arrived at 4pm on a Saturday and the wait was 90 minutes! The place was packed, so I was pretty excited we were about to experience something remarkable. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, we were shown to an old stuffy dining room on the upper level. This place hasn't been updated since maybe the early 90's. It all just feels tired and forgotten. The service was decent, but slightly frazzled (I get it). Thankfully, rolls and butter were brought immediately, and were replenished as needed. The kids in our group, who were starving after the 90 minute drive, followed by the 90+ minute wait, were staging a coup at this point, so the rolls really saved the day. As I looked at the menu I realized unless you order a steak, everything else is fried. I typically lean more toward fish, but the halibut and shrimp dishes were all breaded. Poultry dishes all breaded as well. I opted for the halibut, hoping it wouldn't be too heavy or greasy. My husband ordered prime rib, and the kids ordered chicken fried "steak." The sides were nothing to write home about - choice of potato, veggies, and a couple salad choices. I opted for the seafood cocktail salad, which frankly, was the best part of my meal (and that's not saying much). It's lumps of imitation crab, and for $4 extra, some steamed shrimp, all served on a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce with a little paper cup of cocktail sauce. If I hadn't paid for the upgrade I literally would have been served a pile of imitation crab on iceberg. When the food arrived it looked disappointing. Soggy, limp, overcooked veggies, standard baked potato. if you want sour cream it's extra. My fish was soggy, yet over cooked. In fact, breading seems to be something they struggle with. The kid's chicken fried steak had the same soggy, weak breading. I didn't taste theirs, but they said it was like a hamburger with soggy breadcrumbs, and the gravy was a coagulated, greasy concoction. I was only able to eat a few bites of my fish. My husband said his prime rib was really good. I did try a bite, and it was decent. Our friends ordered the sirloin, which they seemed to enjoy. No one ate the over cooked veggies. I am just astounded this place continues to draw people in! The prices are outrageous for the poor quality food they serve. Sure, beef is what they do. Lesson learned. But, they have no problem charging you $30 for an overcooked soggy piece of fish. All the sides were shameful. $25 for the mess they tried to pass off as chicken fried steak. The one bright spot was that the kid's meals are only about $6. I wish we had made all the older kids order from the kid's menu. This place should be more in the price range of something like a Black Bear Diner (Black Bear's food is actually better). For what we spent for this mess we could have taken the whole family to a nice high end restaurant. My overall feeling is that Maddox had its heyday about 50+ years ago, and ever since they have been resting on their laurels. They haven't changed or updated a single thing. They are just dialing it in. But, why shouldn't they when people flock to this place in droves and fork out ridiculous amounts of money for sub par food? I notice that most of the 5 star reviews are from people who have been coming here for decades. Definitely not worth the drive, the wait, and especially the price! read more

I love the place. They're constantly busy, but they're efficient, friendly, and caring. I love the unpretentious, but professional vibe. Make a reservation through Yelp! Don't expect steaks and sides like you'll get in Downtown Salt Lake City. However, Maddox's steaks are a value at twice the price. The rolls are addicting! I don't live in Utah, but a return visit is always better if we get to Maddox at least once. Remember, they're closed on Sundays and Mondays. Which is a real disappointment for Memorial Day. I was first introduced to Maddox might really 20s by a friend who simply explained that all of their family cars instinctively would exit the freeway and stop at Maddox. He told me that I could choose to eat or not, but every time we pass by we would be stopping. Why fight a good thing? We just swung by again on the way home from a family trip and I was reminded how much I love it. We went to the drive-in this time, although we've enjoyed the sit down portion of the restaurant in the past. The burgers are great and they have quite the selection. The prices are reasonable and the fries are thick cut pretty much perfect. By the way, our cars and I will do the same thing.... Yours should too. read more

Maddox has always been one of my favorite places. The rolls are amazing and the raspberry butter is great! However after eating there today I feel like Maddox really fell in my eyes. I got the trout deluxe lunch, which was an old favorite. The filet was small, it came with corn that was smallest ear of corn I have seen on a plate in years. It was more like silage corn in size and tasted old and dried out. I asked the server for a new piece which they brought and it was ok. The salad which I have always loved no longer has the beets on it which I liked and the prices for everything have gone up significantly. Like a meal the cost 15.95 at the beginning of the year is now 21.95. Thats a big jump in price and the portion size went down. Not super happy about leaving still hungry after spending that much on lunch. Hopefully it was a fluke and just a bad day. If it happens again I may move on from Maddox as there are many other great places to eat at a much better price. read more

Additionally, I didn't think cooking red peppers with broccoli was a great idea; it didn't work well together. Our waitress was busy but friendly and attentive. I ordered takeout, a fried chicken dinner for 4. The cost was $42 but they added and additional $8 for mashed potatoes and gravy. This was for 4 breasts, a couple legs and a couple thighs, 8 pieces in total, soup, rolls and the mashed potatoes. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem paying for a good meal but, the breasts were about the size of most thighs, tiny legs and so tough you could hardly chew the meat from the breasts. A chicken dinner from the local grocery store would have been so much better, included more food and cost 1/2 the price. Not sure what's going on with Maddox but they are nothing like they were even 2 years ago. Won't be going back. read more

The Food: This will be my third review of Maddox Ranch House. Because, it's my favorite place to grab yummy food an hour away. This visit I got the 6 oz. Filet Mignon, Mashed Potato's, Strawberry Pie. The Steak was cooked and seasoned to absolute perfection. The Medium Rare was textbook Medium Rare. I sliced into the center and could have taken a picture to use as an example of a perfect MR. Mashed Potato's are exceptional, creamy, fluffy, and just a few little pieces of potato to remind you they're real. The daily Veggies this trip were Broccoli and Carrots also steamed and buttered to perfection, not mushy like you get at other places, still had some crunch to them. Now let's talk about this strawberry (and to be honest, all the fruit pies). I know they call it whipped cream, but it's more like a European crème fraîche, the only thing it's missing is fresh vanilla bean and some liquor. They place a tasty buttery piece pie crust on the plate, then heap on a gigantic pile of fresh strawberries in a light sugar glaze. This is the same as their Peach Pie in the fall. This ALONE is worth the drive. The Service: MAKE RESERVATIONS! This place is BUSY, if you go in without reservations you may wait up to an hour. With reservations they are very good about getting you in very close to the time of your reservation. The Servers here are all VERY friendly. There was a mix up with the type of gravy I wanted on my potato, I ordered Brown/Beef Gravy, they gave me Country. The Server quickly went to the kitchen and brought me a helping of the correct Mashed/Gravy. Honestly I scooped off the country gravy and added it to my other plate. They are quick and friendly on corrections. Sadly, this is often the same mistake every time I go there. The Restaurant: The section I was in I could easily see that there were two bussers working. One to clear/clean and one to set for the next guest. For a place this busy this is the very model of efficiency. As soon as we were sat, they delivered warm rolls and cornbread with Raspberry Butter (Something the region is known for, fresh Raspberries) and Regular Whipped Butter as well. There is Honey available on request for the corn bread. The honey is also sourced locally. The ROLLS are awesome! Summary: I love love love this place. Even when things don't go perfectly they are quick to correct them. The Chicken Fried/Turkey Fried/Shrimp Steaks are pretty awesome on a budget. The taste of Maddox Plate will give you a portion of Chicken Fried, and Turkey Steak with a portion of their Famous Fried Chicken (breast). My friends and I drive an hour from Salt Lake on a pretty regular basis to eat here (About once a month.) It's a good place for special occasions where you may want to have a 'fancy' meal and not empty your bank account, or just with a group of friends. There is no Wine/Beer/Liquor service here, which is a shame because the Steaks really deserve a nice Malbec. But you really can't go wrong here. If I have one last meal, I will need it to be from Maddox Ranch House. Their restaurant, service and every single item on the menu is RIIIDICULOUS!!! As in delicious and scrumptious! You start with cornbread and biscuits, with some raspberry jam, then a soup/salad, your SUPER LARGE entree, then, if you can fit it in...a monster sized dessert! Most of the meat comes straight from the ranch, right behind the restaurant, hence the "Ranch House" part of the name. The hubs tore into his T-bone and I could never pass up a lamb dish. The lamb chop steak is so melt in your mouth, that even though I was already so full, I still tried to keep stuffing my face. Connected next to the restaurant is also a "Drive-In." You have no excuse to properly get your grub on! You WILL be mad if you leave without one of their famous pies/cakes or both too! Or, caramels/candies. All made locally.
