I've been in contact with Daniel at Mademoiselle Colette's corporate office for a couple of weeks now since my visit at the Palo Alto store visit in August. I finally had some free time this afternoon. I picked up the kouign amann, Paris Brest and the lemon tart from Barbara that were set aside for me. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth in the kouign amann and its laminated buttery layers with a hint of sweetness was perfect! You've made my day! It was airy and light. I'm waiting to share the other sweet treats with my parents later this evening. Thank you for surprising me with the lemon choice. Barbara - it was really wonderful to meet you! HEALTH CODE VIOLATIONS!!! I am writing this review to both warn other customers and so that management sees this. I was at the MP location earlier this week and saw not one but TWO health code violations committed by employees. First, one of the ladies was drinking out of an open cup at the front where the food and beverages are prepared. This is against the health code! 113977. (a) Except as specified in subdivision (b), an employee shall eat or drink only in designated areas where contamination of nonprepackaged food; clean equipment, utensils, and linens; unwrapped single-use articles; or other items needing protection cannot result. (b) A food employee may drink from a closed beverage container if the container is handled to prevent contamination of the employee's hands, the container, nonprepackaged food, and food-contact surfaces. The employee (brown hair in a ponytail, wearing grey Adidas) was frequently drinking a pink drink from a clear open cup behind the counter where the pastries are! Also, I saw the male employee behind the counter sneeze and use his bare hand to cover his sneeze. He rubbed his nose and sniffed. I was watching him from my table to make sure that he washed his hands. He went over to the sink behind the cash register and I kid you not, he turned on the water and for literally ONE SECOND put his hands under it. He then wiped his hands together to dry them. HE DID NOT USE SOAP TO WASH HIS HANDS AFTER SNEEZING INTO THEM!!!! Article 4. Handwashing 113953.3. (a) (2) After touching bare human body parts other than clean hands and clean, exposed portions of arms. (5) After coughing, sneezing, using a handkerchief or disposable tissue, using tobacco, eating, or drinking. He then went back to work grabbing customers' pastries. I'd really love for management to please have a word with staff/review training and protocols - please don't respond to this review with the canned "Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We have addressed this with our staff and we will take your comments into consideration." Please actually DO SOMETHING and ensure that all of your staff follow proper health code laws! I think the service is declining, today the took forever to bring my order and the avocado toast wasn't made right it was kind of soggy and share my thoughts and the waiter said that it wasn't. I was wanting for so long that I decided to take it, my friends we're already eaten their food. I have been here so many times and it wasn't that busy to use that as an excuse. I want to specifically praise Ricardo for his excellent customer service during my visit yesterday. While I wasn't entirely satisfied with the food quality (my salad was extremely salty and not as fresh as I'd hoped), Ricardo handled my concern with professionalism and care. When I mentioned the issues with my salad, Ricardo readily accepted it and offered to give me credit for it. He explained that the gift card machines weren't working at the time, but he personally committed to calling me as soon as they were available so I could receive my credit. I appreciated that he accepted the salad back even though I sensed he wasn't completely happy with my request -- he still treated me respectfully and genuinely tried to make things right. This is the kind of customer service that keeps me coming back. Ricardo represents what makes Mademoiselle Colette special, and I hope management recognizes his dedication to handling difficult situations with grace. I was excited to try this pastry place since I saw it in a couple "Bay Area Best" lists. And even though the appearance was very promising I found the pastries pretty mediocre compared to the same price ones in SF. The passion fruit tart appeared to be on a simple side, being just sweet and lacking juiciness/creaminess/crunchiness which you expect from a tart. The almond croissant was totally lacking the lamination; the texture was thick and doughy instead of airy and flaky. It was disappointingly bland (couldn't taste the almond filling at all) and far too heavy + overly sweet. The last thing that was really disappointing- the waiting time for the avocado sandwich. Have been wanting to visit this place for a while! Came on a weekend after lunch time and there was a small line out the door waiting to order. Got a kouign amann ($5.80) and a passion fruit exotic tart ($10.50) for to-go. They had many desserts and made me want to try all of them. You can't go wrong with their kouign amann and also I just really like it in general for the caramelized, crispy exterior and the buttery exterior. The passion fruit dessert was light, but has a sharp tangy flavor to it, so I could only eat like 1/4 at a time even though it wasn't big at all (maybe would've paired well with a black/green tea or smth). My 3 pals and I arrived at 2:30 on a Sunday and their kitchen just closed, no hot chocolate and only coffee or the bakery items in sight. I asked if they had lemon and honey for a hot tea and they said yes, but I only got sliced limes. The kouign amann, croissant and chocolate croissant were good. Iced tea wasn't strong enough and flat white was ok. I normally like coming by here when I'm in the area but it's good to know the kitchen closes early. Words can't describe how I like the atmosphere of this place. Every time I come here feels so good. The coffee and the variety of pastries are unbelievably perfect. Hands up to the tarts; exotic and entrement are my favorite. The venue has this very Parisian, cute and sophisticated space to drag you into one of the best customers service. Mademoiselle Colette in Menlo Park is my go-to café and I live in Palo Alto! I found it a few months ago thanks to my best friend, and now we're here 2-3 times a week. The pastries are always fresh and delicious (my favorite pastries are their apple turnover and their seasonal pumpkin travel cake) and , the coffee is top tier, but the staff truly make this place special. Ricardo's customer service is amazing. He's warm, kind, and always makes you feel welcomed. Victoria made the cutest initials on our coffees recently, and it genuinely made our day. Cute spot in downtown Menlo Park with a nice selection of French pastries and traditional breakfast items. Order at the counter, take a number and try to find a seat. They'll (eventually) deliver to the table. For us, it took about 25 min. Tried a croque madame and french toast. Dishes were very well executed and optically pleasing. I thought the French toast portion was on the smaller side, so if you have a big appetite, you may not get filled up. But the dish was flavorful with fresh fruit, whipped cream and maple syrup (on the side). The madame definitely hit the spot and is reminiscent of ones I've tried in Paris. And, the side salad had a nice dressing that counter balanced the dish. read more

The almond croissants and goat cheese kouign amann used to be my favorite, but these days are a somewhat soggy reincarnation of their past selves. I find that they tend to return to their previous quality on busy days like Mother's Day (maybe the higher turnover helps or they're bringing in different people) but on a normal day it's not really worth going to anymore. read more

I've been going to Colette since they opened and adore their Viennoiserie. I've also ordered their Galette du Roi in the past--delicious! And their hot chocolate is fabulously thick! I brought a friend for lunch recently. We split a fantastic tomato croissant (super crisp shard flaky eclair-shaped laminated dough filled with tomatoes, cheese, and a tomato pesto). Then I enjoyed a delicious quiche and he had the ham sandwich (baguette). Being a Viennoiserie addict, I've never bothered to waste stomach space on a sandwich at Colette. I agree with my friend--the ham was sparse and not high quality. The ratio of baguette to filling was way too bready. Considering the exceptional quality of their pastries, it seemed a bit odd for Colette to use cheap ham and so little of it. Mediocre ham can be more easily masked in a croissant or croque monsieur, but not in a baguette sandwich. read more

I like that their croque madam comes with a salad on the side - balances out the flavor well! Line can get a bit long - seems quite popular. All of their pastries look quite nice. They have indoor and outdoor seating, but not all of the outdoor seats are shaded. Plenty of parking behind the restaurant. read more

Came here after my husband's haircut on a Saturday afternoon, and I think he had a much better experience than me. For reference, I'm a vegetarian with an egg allergy, so there was functionally only one item on the menu I could eat. Given my restrictions, my only option was the yogurt and granola bowl (so of course I was going to add berries), but I get the feeling that you could probably ask them to modify things if you're feeling up to it. They brought me the yogurt tub, so I was able to confirm it was gelatin-free, as well (the friendly lady at the counter didn't understand what gelatin was at first, so may be easiest to ask for ingredient lists if your restrictions are not super common or might not be recognizable to an ESL worker, though she seemed otherwise completely fluent). The granola was a nice nutty blend (with hazelnuts!) and had a touch of honey--not too sweet, but enough to sweeten things. The berry addition feels like a lot for the berries you get, but it goes very well with the yogurt and granola. Husband had Eggs Benedict and loved the egg and prosciutto, but was sad they came on a potato thing instead of an English muffin, as he's not a fan of potato (yeah, I don't get him either). He also got a cappuccino, and I got a cortado, and they were decent. I also got a loaf of olive bread to go, because I do love a rustic loaf and olive bread, and I must say that loaf has been fantastic! The location itself is very cute and chic, and the workers were very prompt and friendly, although it does get quite loud indoors (we haven't tried the outdoor seating yet). It's a long the main street, which is conveniently just a door or two away from our usual hair salon, and they appear to serve breakfast items all day (a huge plus for my breakfast-food-loving husband). Even though there's only one item I can for sure eat here, it's a reasonably nice option (not amazing, but good), and my husband likes the food. If you don't have dietary restrictions, perhaps you'll like it, too! And if nothing else, I will be back for more of the olive bread! read more

I gave four stars, only because even though I had the address, I could not see the name of this fabulous French Cafe "Mademoiselle Colette" The name was not posted in the front or in the rear entrance. Located in the heart of Menlo Park surrounded by salons, restaurants, and shopping. Love that they have the outdoor seating in front and in the back. Sweet or Savory they certainly have something for your pallet. Our croissants were $7 each. Lots of what seemed to be locals hanging out with their laptops. Service was ok. Stick with the pastries... The two of us weren't very hungry so we split the crab Benedict and a passionfruit pavlova. The crab Benedict was more like a crab sandwich with the brioche bun. The egg was poached nicely, however the crab portion was more like a small spoonful of crab salad, and very fishy at that. The pavlova was good! Light, not too sweet, crunchy and passion-fruity! We went at 1pm on a Saturday and most of their pastries were sold out, so go early if you have your heart set on a specific one (their kouign amann is fantastic). This is my #1 Go-To pastry spot on the peninsula--they have arguably the best pastries in the area, but also serve excellent breakfasts/lunches similar to cafes you'll find in Paris. But it is the freshness and superbly high quality of the ingredients of their pastries that gives Mademoiselle Colette the top ranking for pastries on the peninsula, and arguably in the Bay Area or even the state. A very close second is Alexander's Patisserie in downtown Mt View--but they are slightly different. Plus the street-side or the back patio seating with marble tables and wicker chairs, areas with umbrellas offer a very "similar to European cafes" feel. read more

The pastries are delicious and so is the coffee. It's overpriced to the point of gouging but that doesn't seem to matter to their customer base. I get weird attitudes from all the staff at this place. It's really hard to describe. This is total speculation but maybe cause I don't look like everyone else in this area(?) Their behavior is so consistent towards me that's the only thing I can think of(?). We live close to Mademoiselle Colette and often come here for the sandwiches and treats--they have so many to choose from. I'll start by saying this place is a bit on the expensive side, but the treats are really good. It's nice to indulge here and there, especially when you're not doing it every day. My wife and I usually go for the turkey sandwich, which comes on a baguette roll, and of course, the pastries. While the food isn't over the top, it's consistently enjoyable. If you're looking to try something new, I would recommend stopping by and experiencing it for yourself. The service here is what you'd expect from a pastry shop--they ask you what you want, and they get it for you. The ambiance is clean and inviting, giving off a Parisian feel with all the goodies on display. Pastries were delicious, coffee was okay. Seating is limited but makes the place cozy. The only reason I wouldn't go back is that it's incredibly expensive. The ham and cheese baguette was nearly $20 (and not as good as Blue Bottle's), and the little pastries were between $6-10. Raspberry financier was great but it's gone in 3 bites, the mini lemon merengue pie did not disappoint, and the pavlova was pretty good as well. In short, everything was delicious but get your drinks elsewhere :) In terms of service, they forgot about one of our drinks for like 30 minutes but were nice about getting that to us. read more
