I keep going to susie cakes hoping one day my mind will change about this place because everybody loves it so much. I got a nice assortment of cupcakes to try to sway my head and give it a fair shot. The vanilla cupcake, and the chocolate cupcake just a cake part of it all are both so different. On one hand of vanilla is more dense and kind of on the dry side yet the chocolate is so delicious and moist and not as dense. I wish both cakes were similar in texture however it is not, and it disappoints me. The vanilla cake doesn't have much taste to it all and it's not sweet however the frostings help even it out and balance it. I got a coconut and a lemon cupcake and my disappointment. The flavor is only in the frosting, and the cupcake is just a regular vanilla cupcake. The peanut butter and the mocha chocolate cupcakes, delicious, and good flavor that I enjoyed. The red velvet was delicious as well. I think if I ever come back, I would just stay away from the vanilla cupcakes and go for the chocolate based ones. read more

We have been wanting to try SusieCakes for a while but never got a chance until now as my husband picked it up for us. Their customer service is excellent and they were super kind and friendly. I am not impressed with the flavors hence the 3 stars overall, the cupcakes are way too sweet for my taste, the lemon cupcake tasted like synthetic lemon flavoring, that unmistakable chemical imitation taste rather than anything close to a real lemon (so it felt and tasted like how lemon scented surface cleaners smell - its a distinct flavor). All of their cupcakes had this fake artificial flavor taste in the frosting, which I think is ruining their frosting/cupcakes but that is just my opnion. The sponge under the frosting isn't bad, a bit dry, and dense, but not bad. Their carrot cake was good, but too sweet for my taste buds. read more

If you're looking for a high-quality bakery for special occasions or a slice, I would recommend this place. There really aren't that many locations of this around the Bay Area which I wish they would have one in the South Bay eventually. My tride and true is always the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. They manually slice it for you so I would say it depends on the person depends on how big or small your slice is. If you want a custom order, I would definitely recommend to call in with a couple weeks notice. Inside is very bright and open and the service is always very friendly here. Seven minutes before closing, I called to ask if they had any more whole key lime pies. My lucky day, they did! I made it just in time (the pedestrian closures had me thrown for a loop). The gentleman I spoke to over the phone had it out and ready for me. I also picked up a strawberry and lemon poppyseed cupcake. Wow, their baked goods are incredible! SusieCakes is my go to bakery for celebration cakes hands down. Their famous vanilla celebration cake (think funfetti) is a dense and moist cake with a thick frosting that I really enjoy, but this may not suit those who prefer fluffy or extra light buttercream. I really appreciate the staff at this location who are always nice at the register and know what to recommend. There are also other flavors unique to Susie like lemon, marble and old-fashioned chocolate that I've tried, and while I enjoyed them, my Asian parents would call it "too sweet." This particular location in Menlo has some seating indoors their very spacious interior, and so you can grab a slice of cake to sit and enjoy even if you don't order an entire cake. read more

I usually order a dutch apple pie from Marie Callender's for Thanksgiving but the past 3 years have not been good. I'm not sure what happened to their pies. I've had cakes from SusieCakes before and, in all honesty, they're too sweet for me. But I wanted to give their apple pie a try. Very Very glad I did. Pick up was scheduled and easy the day before Thanksgiving. I came at noon and it was quick. I also ordered their 4 pack of thanksgiving cupcakes. Dutch Apple Pie - 5/5 . Wasn't too sweet. We made the drive out here since this was on our Bay Area Bakery bucket list but honestly it was disappointing compared to other Bay Area bakeries. The cupcakes were ok but more in line with what a home baker can make. The thing that killed the place was the service. We waited first in line at the counter for a decent amount of time and were greeted with an employee who clearly did not want to be there. After he took our order our little one started doing a potty dance and we asked if they had a bathroom. He flatly said no, which is fine but most times when a little kid is clearly in distress I have had employees be kind enough to point me to the closest bathroom. But this afternoon my in store experience was really unexpected and unpleasant, more over, it's quite shocking to hear from the store manager that adding sprinkles to pre- made non decorated cake needs to take 24 hours!! The store manager was cold, unreasonable and very rude and arrogant. She was not helpful at all. And she made me feel bad to a reasonable request! The staff members are extremely friendly and the service is always fast, but I really do not like the flavor of the desserts and find them to be super dry. Update to my review from five years ago: I came in today while in the neighborhood because I just had this sudden onset of The Need for Buttercream. I ordered four cupcakes: peanut butter, chocolate vanilla, vanilla, and blueberry pancake. It was about $20 for four cupcakes (very reasonably priced) and the service today was great! A friendly woman greeted me on arrival and tried her hardest to ensure I'd get rewards points (I gave up in the end; the app wasn't downloading for me). My box was packaged neatly and without a speck of frosting on any of the dividers (don't know how they did it). I ate the vanilla cupcake on a bench outside because TNFB is real. It was delicious! The carrot contains nuts and raisins which give it good mix of textures to chew. The lemon cake is on the sweet side vs tartine tart lemon meringue cake slice. The cream cheese frosting gives it the sweet and slightly sour flavor to balance the nutty cake flavor. The red velvet cake had the same moist cake with the thick cream cheese frosting. Both kept well in the fridge even after 24 hours and both retained the same texture and flavor. The displays were quite inviting. This location is surrounded by restaurants which makes it convenient to find something sweet after having lunch or dinner. The staff were nice. I was at work thinking about one of their delicious cupcakes! So before my pedicure appointment I stop in ! I ordered 6 cupcakes and then 1 on the side to stuff in my face immediately! Wholly shamolly, purchased a cake for my 3 yo Friday oct 10 morning walked into the store to order. Was not given a receipt, no problem paid with my phone. Asked if I could p/u at 5pm. Arrived at 5 pm cake was no where in sight. Apparently the manager had no clue as to the order and because she sees "hundreds of people" everyday she could not remember she personally took the order. I feel somewhat discriminated against because I guess I look like any random Latino to her. This young girl apparently cannot differentiate among people of my race. What is wrong with this generation of young people. If you can't handle the job do something else. Don't insult the customers who bring you business that pays your salary.
