I'm a longtime Madewell shopper and stopped into this store for the first time last week. It is clean, very well organized, and full of so many styles that I haven't been seeing in the locations in my area. It's the first week of spring and their big sale just ended, so it seems that they are showing off all of their newest pieces and it's making me so ready for warmer weather. Sales associates were everywhere and ready to help or answer questions, but still let me leisurely wander around. A great loc! I own a pair of Madewell jeans and like the fit so am looking to add to my collection. The Flatiron location is not overly big, but it has 2 levels. Top level is women's jeans, tops, accessories, fitting room and cash register. Lower level is men's. There was actually a table with jeans that are on sale for $50. What a steal especially since a pair can go over $100+. There was plenty of staff in the store if you needed assistance or had questions. Unfortunately, the style I liked didn't have my size. Madewell also has the jeans trade program. You can bring jeans from any brand and will get a $20 code to use on a full price pair of jeans. Incredible customer service and wonderful selection! Nick and Colin were absolute sweethearts. Nick helped me find a great pair of jeans (after trying on numerous styles) and he even went on a scavenger hunt to locate a top I eyed upstairs but didn't bring down to the dressing room. All he had to go by was my description of a white cotton or linen blouse with cut outs. He went upstairs, found it, and even took it off the mannequin to bring it to me. Colin helped measure me for a hem adjustment on the jeans and was meticulous throughout. Both he and Nick were incredibly helpful, patient, and provided honest feedback on what looked good on me. Above and beyond! Tips: 1. If you're a Madewell insider (free to join), they offer free hemming services--no need to go to the tailor! 2. If there's a long line for the fitting rooms on the main floor (the women's section), head downstairs to the shoes and men's dept, where there are more fitting rooms that are less busy. Thank you, Logan! It's hard to be a guy in market for jeans to wear to work in 2025. Too baggy, too wide, too tight, weird color. There's so many pitfalls. I made a denim try on appointment and Logan took it from there. He had a bunch of options ready for me. I tried them all on and found just the right pair. Logan had to order them and had them shipped to my home. I tried J Crew, Buck Mason, Gap/Banana, men's stores and finally made well had the right jeans. I hope they wear well and I hope they have this model for a long time so I can restock. I ended up with the 1991 straight leg jeans in a waist size one down from my normal size. read more

Very disappointed at Madewell corporation as a whole. I don't appreciate dishonesty and treating loyal customers with their sneaky tactics. Many items on their website are on sale plus an additional 40-50% percent off the sale price. But the dishonesty comes in when you go to the retail store to shop and you see the same item it is NOT on sale but FULL PRICE. How outrageous! I was told by the sales rep that if I see it the sale price with the additional all 40-50% off they will honor it. What BS and how terrible to do that to customers who are unaware of their bad ethical sales tactics. Why not be upfront with the customers and place the items in the clearance section with the rest - To place them in the non clearance section and have customers pay FULL price is just wrong wrong wrong. Four of my items were sale items with additional off only because I saw them online before I went and told them when I wanted to purchase them at the retail store instead because they had my size. I found some great items here while in NY. The quality of their items matches the prices, so I don't feel bad spending on good pieces. Service was attentive and best of all, they offer 15% off for teachers which I happily took advantage of. Just show your teacher ID or an affiliated email address and they will also apply the discount to sale items! I bought a few pairs of pants from here in different colors and cuts. I have always loved coming here because from my experience, there is no greater place to get pants. I especially love their stretchy skinny jeans. I have always hated the experience of shopping for pants because I don't feel that good about myself, but the woman who was helping me find the right size, cut, and style was really kind, great with people and really knew how to make the experience pleasant. The only problem was that we ended up coming back with the wrong pair and it was way too big, and they delivered a size that was way too small. I did get three pairs of pants though that was amazing, and now that I know what my size is with their new pants design, I can come here and look forward to a quick and painless shopping experience. It's hard to get excited about something like pants, but Madewell has the greatest, most comfortable pants in Manhattan. read more

Came to this location with intention to use my coupon. My review is mainly about the layout of merchandise in the store. I believe the main floor occupies the new merchandise, while the basement house a small section for men and some additional woman items, including sales. Around the store there were few signs about the sale, noted for "save on certain tees and tops." So, even though its the July 4th holiday, the clerk informed not the entire store is on sale, only certain merchandise. It's really hard for customers to decide on what to purchase when you don't know which items are applicable for the sale promotion. I prefer not having to check them at the register. I found that their merchandise either didn't have tags or too well hidden inside. Even as we looked at the jewelry section, none of the earrings had price tags stamped on the back. Why all the mystery in the pricing! Otherwise, service is available if requested, but the store clerks seem to be doing their own thing. read more

They're all so friendly and actually seem to care about customers' needs rather than only being concerned about commission and whatnot. The store itself is very gorgeous. The visual displays are soooo chic and pretty. I believe Madewell stores was voted one of the best interior layouts in the DDI magazine recently. Nice location and the layout is really open and easy to view all the clothing. Wide seleciton of shoe and many dressing rooms so you usually don't have to wait. The salespeople are pretty helpful and there's always a few walking around. The sale section is pretty big, but all one note. There's always like 100 of the same shirt all the same size....so unless 40 women all the same size with the same taste get off a bus anytime soon I don't know why they stock so many?? The clothing itself is actually not very varied, came in looking for a nice sundress, and they only had about 3 different styles to choose from? I feel like a basic bitch writing this review. I try to support local designers and avoid big brands these days, but if I'm being honest, many of my basics and wardrobe staples are from Madewell, particularly this location, so I'd be remiss not to review it. It's the younger, hipper sister of J.Crew so you'll see similar themes from time to time, and similar sales - which is the best part. Of course I'll pay full price if it's the perfect item I've been looking for or basic jeans that I know I'll wear every day, but for the trendier items I know they'll go on sale (and sometimes 30%, 40%, or even 50% additional off of sale items), so a little patience and discipline in going in and checking goes a long way. It's so bad that when I'm stalking a particular item the security guy at the door starts recognizing me :( I often find good jeans, leather bags, dresses, and woven tops here. I've found that the sweaters aren't great quality a lot of times as they stretch or pill (but that's to be expected with lots of wool sweaters I guess). They also feature some cool outside brands like Adidas shoes and Minnetonka moccasins, and do capsule lines with other designers which is cool. I am the mother of a 9 month old so I barely get a chance to shop for myself and when I do, it would be nice to be treated congenially. I don't know what her problem was but the woman who was working the fitting room was rude as hell and a class A snob. It was like a scene from Mean Girls. I was trying on a shirt I'd been coveting for weeks but I didn't like the fit. She told me I should try tying it. I explained that it was the fit around the collar and shoulders and said I thought I needed a size down. Silent stare. She did not offer to get it for me. I said I would go get it. Then she ushered another customer into my fitting room. WTF? I mean Madewelll, really?? Are you training your employees? Maybe she was having a bad day or maybe she's just dense - but lady, when I come in to drop $$ at Madewell, you could at least crack a smile and at the very least you could make eye contact with me and at the very, very least you could not act like a B and make me feel unwelcome in the store. I have been putting money aside for my big christmas splurge and decided to use this money to shop the holiday sale at Madewell. When the sale weekend finally arrived I couldn't wait with excitement! I am on a tight budget, but obviously Madewell is worth it. I even made a date out of it with a friend to go together. Once my friend and I arrived at this location we had a great time! We were both assisted by Aziza, a sales associate on the floor, who made us feel very taken care of, attractive and super confident in our purchases. When I went to the register I had even laughed with the cashier about all the cash from my "adult piggy bank" that I was using to pay for my new clothes. When I left the store you could see a big smile across my face. Shortly after leaving the store, my friend and I went to the 18th Street station off the 1 to head uptown. We were waiting for the train and I had put my shopping bag beside me. When I looked back it was gone. I was devastated. That was a lot of money for it to be stolen so quickly. I called the MTA lost & found just incase, but there was no answer. I checked with the Station manager, but they didn't see anything or have any information. In a desperate plea I went back to this Madewell store and asked if there was any thing they could do to help me. I was wondering if the clothes could be replaced or my money refunded. Unfortunately, because the robbery wasn't in the store, there wasn't much they could do. I totally understood, but still couldn't prevent myself from quietly crying. That was a lot of money for me, and I had felt so violated by whoever stole my shopping bag. I felt really stupid and genuinely bummed. Shonda, the manager, couldn't have been nicer to me about the whole situation. I was offered water, the regional manager was called, and I felt like everyone was very sympathetic to my situation. Shonda also offered me a discount code for the future and gave both my friend and I a free tote, a pair of socks, a cute candle and a make-up case. The case read, "Give me more space," and Shonda made a funny joke about how I should say this phrase to New Yorkers to avoid my stuff getting stolen. I appreciated both the joke and the generosity. Once again, I appreciated my experience at Madewell. I'm very grateful for everyone's kindness at this location and look forward to saving again to go back for the beautiful clothing I purchased in the first place. I just wanted to share my appreciation for everyone at this location and especially to Shonda for handling my situation with care, compassion and generosity. This location is beautiful and organized and has a great sale section. However be forewarned about the sales associates. Make sure to DOUBLE CHECK your receipt. I wouldn't have written this review but it looks like another review had a similar complaint about overcharging. I came in to use my $25 birthday coupon that was mailed to me on two items that were on sale. One was a blouse marked down for $44, the other was a tank top that had a hand written tag that read $19.99. Yet even after telling the cashier about my coupon, she overcharged me $64. When I asked if she applied the coupon she said she did. I asked for a printed receipt and read it as I was walking out. Turns out she charged BOTH shirts for $45 and then the discount which makes no sense considering one of them clearly stated $19.99. I went back and had her fix it, which she was able to, but was no means apologetic. I get mistakes happen but a $25 mistake and no apologies? Thankfully it went back to my card. The sales associates also don't move when you're browsing the two small racks of the sale section which doesn't make the shopping experience enjoyable. After working in retail myself, you would think you'd want to give the customer a little room to shop and actually make some sales. read more

I really love this store, though it is a bit on the steep side, price-wise. They have some pretty good sales and their merchandise seems to change fairly quickly. I think their sizing is pretty spot on. I wear a medium in most shirts--except the over-sized ones, I get a small, but that's because I don't want to look like I'm wearing a tent. I haven't tried on any of their jeans because I'm pretty particular and I like the way Seven For All Man Kind fit me best (White girl ass with limited curves right here). Madewell has great customer service - in fact, I was there on Saturday to do some retail therapy when I found this great shirt that I adored but they only had XS left (about 6 of them) and no other sizes. The salesperson checked the inventory and had one shipped to me from Cali free of shipping costs. It is delivered ground so I have no received it yet, but I'm super excited and thankful that she offered to do that for me! She also told me that they run sales on their website that they don't necessarily run in the store, so as long as you make them aware of it they will honor it. read more

As J Crew's younger and hipper sister, Madewell is a lovely store full of amazing clothing, and I'm a huge fan of their jeans and tops. It's no wonder that my wallet seems to cringe every time I swing by here, since the prices are fairly steep. This store in particular is fairly generous in size, and has a wide and varied selection of their stock. Their staff are friendly enough, but I definitely get the feeling that they're not as willing to help as they make it out to be -- several times when I've visited, I'll try to get someone's attention for a fitting room, only to get the brush-off. It makes it very difficult to try on clothes, especially if I want to see if a shirt is just on the edge of too big, or whether those dark denim jeans will fit alright in the waist. Madewell offers free hemming for jeans, so definitely take advantage of that -- just be sure to follow up within a week if you don't get a phone call back, like me. Thankfully this store is close to my office, so I popped in wondering if my jeans had returned -- the girl at the counter apologised profusely for not calling me when they'd returned from the tailor. read more

One of the cashiers took it upon herself to look up an item online to check the price, though I offered her to get another one with a tag. She hastily (almost too hastily) said it was fine and ended up charging me twice the price. I browse online like it's my job, so I knew for a fact that she had charged me wrongly. (FYI: I was refunded the difference when I myself double checked the website.) I'm gonna give her the benefit of the doubt: might've been an honest mistake. I'm convinced that there is no other store that makes me as happy as this one.* (cue the squeals of joy) I walk in every time and there's always a happy face greeting me. The easy to wear clothing are great for weekend wear and for students who don't want to stress about what to wear for class. From beautiful silk blouses to graphic printed dresses, this is one store that I never get bored of. Prices are all fairly reasonable and students with ID get at 15% off discount on regular priced items. I also heard that they were opening one up in Chicago, where I'll be attending school and the thought of having a Madewell store to visit for some retail therapy was very exciting. Why do I love the smell of this store? Is there some sort of secret perfume that they spray in there or something? I can't explain it. I love Madewell's cardigans, especially the Wallace cardigan. On a visit to the city, my friend brought me here. I was absolutely dazzled by this store. I would have liked to buy everything in there. The styles are gorgeous. I purchased a cross body leather bag that I absolutely love and by chance there was a 25% off that day! Which made me love my purchase that much more! I think Madewell has unfortunately fallen into the route of J.Crew: recycling the same styles every season. It doesn't help that they are both under the same company and needless to say, they well overpriced many of their products too. I have always been a fan of Madewell and still am in some ways. But I definitely notice the recent lackluster attempt of their designers to come up with new and refreshing styles. The same old boyfriend sweater I keep seeing every season that still costs $70. Boring and pricey! One thing that they often do change are their leather handbags, which are one of the best in terms of mid-tier brands. Quite frankly, they are even better than J.Crew handbags. On average, they cost anywhere from $150 - $300 but the leather quality (Italian) makes it so worth it. Occasionally, you can catch them on sale, which is a big plus. Their popular Transport tote is a winner. I do like this store more than the one in Soho in terms of the size of their sale racks. They have more smaller sizes here, which I appreciate. But the one caveat about their sales is that most of the time, it's final sale. So you have to make sure you really love it before you buy. Their customer service has also been consistent. Every time I come here, I'm always greeted by warm hearted associates who actually want to help you. On the other hand, the security guard by the door is always glum and gives that look of suspicion as if you are going to steal something. Never get a good feeling from him but it doesn't matter. First time i entered the store some months ago I was not interested, probably largely because it was a hot summer day and all the clothes looked like layers of warmth I didn't need. Returned in the beginning of fall after some online browsing Alex Chung's items and I find the place very cute. To be clear, I think certain items like long sleeve cotton tees at 45 dollars is a bit much but on the sale rack at 12.99, it's acceptable as it is very comfortably for me. One thing is that the sleeves are pretty tight and tees are a bit boxy but if you like the slouchy look tucked in some jeans or skirt it's great. I fell in LOVE with the long white flared skirt. it's PERFECT. i'm no hippie style, but i loved it. Cashmere sweaters are very comfortable at the right size/slouch for a petite person. I haven't tried their jeans and shoes yet but definitely looks interesting. So basically this is an extension of J Crew but a bit more up to date in terms of style. read more

I love this location. I feel like overall the brand has a great look, although for the quality the prices are a tad high. I always get things on sale. which is key. They finally started selling a size 24 in the jeans, so now I can buy jeans here! yay. They run pretty big, so this was a problem before. They still need to adjust their sizing across the board. Many XS tops run more like a small or medium. I'm a long time fan of their boots and shoes, which are probably my favorite Madewell items. They accessories make great gifts. This location is my favorite because it's never too crowded, and the staff is really great. Very helpful and great at suggesting items and catering to you. The stuff in the store is very cute but I had a horrible experience with the staff here. I purchased an item to be shipped to my house and was told it would go out the next day. It did not go out till 2 days later and a week later i still had not received the item. (I live less than 5 miles away) I called customer service and had them reach out to the store and even after that, the manager called and told me she could not do anything once the purchase was in UPS's hands. It took some major coercing but I finally got it out of her that she was able to call UPS for me and, after she did, I got the package the next day. If its a straightforward purchase, then im sure this store is fine but if you ever have an issue, just know that their managers and staff are extremely rude and unwilling to help. This was my first experience shopping at madewell and I will never be buying anything from them ever again. Ive never had this issue with jcrew. read more

ok well I'm usually very generous with my ratings so giving them 3 stars is really heartbreaking for me; I've been a loyal shopper for quite some time considering I come here several times a week and always leave with a little something. Well Tuesday was the day I was disgusted; shocked; and disappointed! I was greeted rudely by an associate that seemed very pushy and looked at me as if I'm shoplifting (no worries buddy I'm a normal person). I found a pair of denim I really liked on the sales rack for $69.99 and another 30% off I was sooooo happy. Upon getting to the cashier she rang them up at $128.00; and claimed it was put there wrongly. I asked her to put them on the side and spend $80 on random crap. I called to speak to the manager and see what she says about the jeans; she said no they're full price at $148.00 my only thought was to say "honey I'm no dummy you dont want costumers then go f*** yourself".... I came back and returned the $80 worth of crap and took myself to lucky brand where I was greeted with much respect, and actually complimented! As for madewell my back started falling apart 2 weeks after purchase we'll see what can be done when I call today. I probably won't be shopping at this location they're way too stuck up, and pushy, looking at you as if you're a shoplifter. Thanks madewell!! update: I will be adding an extra star because; I Just got back from the store, the girl exchanged the back no questions asked, and even gave me whichever one they had in stock (wasn't a sale item) online or in store. I have been a loyal customer for many years now and have always been amazed at the customer service from every Madewell store that I have visited from California to New York. Until I came into this store... When I went to the counter for payment I was met with two employees with a SERIOUS ATTITUDE PROBLEM. I had a couple questions about my purchases including monogramming my leather goods and the denim jacket that I purchased. I ask if the backpack that I bought could be monogrammed since it had leather detailing on it. I was met with both employees LAUGHING IN MY FACE. Apparently, the monogram machine can only do leather goods that are full on leather. Fine, I was not aware, that's why I asked. However the way that one of the employees explained that me was demeaning and with extreme attitude. I love Madewell but this store needs work. I truly hope that regional management sees this and does something about the stores customer service training. read more
