I've been coming here with my whole family since moving to Sarasota, the first time we had it we fell in love! Well after placing over 4 carry out orders a week over $100 each order. I received a salmon dinner that was clearly undercooked in the middle it was still clear and gooey not flaky.... I mentioned this to them and tried to place another order hopefully to redeem themselves, they didn't offer a discount or comp my salmon or nothing but I still gave it a chance.... I quickly learned that was a terrible decision. I don't know if they were trying to be funny, but the fish was so over cooked this time I couldn't even pull it apart. It was like a piece of rubber. And the side of broccoli, was completely black and molded you could tell they steamed and served some broccoli that should've been thrown out. The side of fries were slimy and soggy, and the Brussels sprouts tasted like vinegar. Oh and don't even waste your time ordering the lobster BLT, it was the soggiest bread I've ever experienced. We find ourselves enjoying their Sunday breakfast almost every week. They sent out an email saying they were taking extra cleaning precautions due to the virus. Yesterday we walked in and the place is always really clean but wow! Not a crumb, smudge or piece of dust anywhere. They are the few that do what they say. Four of us went to Madfish Grill Last "Monday". I always worry about the Monday Chef anywhere that is open on Monday. I went against the grain and ordered their Flat Iron Steak - Medium. It came out raw, I sent it back waited ten minutes while the other folks ate. It came back still rare. So I returned it and in order to catch up with my friends I ordered a fish sandwich instead - quick right? "Was grouper all right" I was asked. I said yes. It arrived just as my friends were finishing. Then when the bill came the grouper sandwich cost more than the steak! On top of that the "Monday Manager Woman" never heard the expression that the customer is always right. Suggest you dont go on Monday. read more

Madfish grill, mad tasty. What an awesome find. My husband and I, (live in Tampa) had been driving up and down Florida all day for him to see a specialist. Our day started pretty early and we had been surviving on road trip snacks. Our way home we wanted something close off the highway but where we could enjoy ourselves a bit. We don't get out much having two young boys under 4, pandemic... Madfish was magical. It felt normal, in the best way possible. Like my midwestern home town had plopped a homemade, seafood inspired diner/ sports bar right in our path. Motown to The Rolling Stones set the mood. We ordered a ridiculous amount of food!!! The ultimate really was our waitress Amy. I've been out of the service industry for over 5 years now an I have to say, Amy... you're KILLIN the game! She made the whole dinner effortless. She was extremely personable and we went with all of her suggestions. Times are tough, Amy made it feel like everything was back to "normal." Madfish was just what we needed. The food was great, but the service was mediocre. The first person who served us wasn't our waitress. I totally understand her being tied up, but she was tied up all evening. We only saw her three times. The first time she needed to refill my drink, she just left a pitcher at the table. My wife ordered the Blackened Mahi Tacos and loved them. However, after a few bites she wanted more of the chipotle aioli, but it took our waitress around 15 minutes after the food had come out to get to our table. I will say the gentleman with the goatee was great! He made sure that we were taken care of. He's one of the reasons that I'm giving this a 3 and not a 2 or 1. read more

I am utterly amazed at two things: 1. I went here even with the astoundingly low rating; 2. That there are SO many people that return to this restaurant as regulars. It is with my experience at this restaurant that I have been finally able to diagnose a malady that plagues many places with high retirement populations: Silver Coast Syndrome. I am getting ahead of myself, though. Madfish Grill uses a clever little ploy that is similar in many communities with a high retired population that goes beyond the normal Early Bird Specials -- 2 dine for $29 (one cocktail, one appetizer, and one entree per person). I must say that this gimmick works. There were many blue, pink, white, and silver tops present when I entered and they continued to flock in as we sat. I continually heard servers talking to their guests in familiar terms and knowing exactly what the guests "usual drinks and meals" were. These servers knew their customers very well. This aspect of the restaurant made it easier for me to look at the menu and easier for me to look for something on the menu. We ordered an unsweet tea and a water as well as the Lump Crab Cake appetizer while we looked at the menus. Our drinks arrived as did a basket of bread and butter. The bread basket consisted of cut French, cheese, and sage/sourdough bread. My tea was flavored. I despise flavored tea. I sent it back and tried the bread. The regular bread was okay and I didn't care for the cheese bread at all. Out of the three, the sage/sourdough was the best and tasted the freshest. I received a second glass of iced tea; still flavored. The server apologized profusely and went away for a third time. Third time being the charm, when she returned I had unflavored, unsweet tea. It was at this point that we placed the balance of our order: Fried shrimp with new potatoes and jambalaya Blackened mahi (not bad, but not great) with grilled asparagus (soggy and flavorless) and lobster bisque (sherry is so strong I was drunk/ lobster slivers dropped on top / bitter aftertaste / unfinished) replaced with black bean (hard beans and odd flavor) Our crab cakes arrived and my hopes of a decent meal were dashed. The menu said, "no filler." Unless I had spots on my glasses, there was a lot of filler in these miniscule, little cakes. We each took one of them and took a bite. While there was indeed lump crab present, there was A LOT of filler in these crab cakes that masked the flavor of the crab. The dipping sauce shouldn't even be touched as it tasted like they opened a jar of mustard and mayonnaise, mixed them together and then added some dried dill weed. The size, while at first being bad became a blessing since I didn't need to leave any uneaten. As we finished the appetizer, our soups arrived. I tried some of the jambalaya and was not pleased. It tasted like a can of stewed tomatoes had been opened and chili powder and rice added. At no point did I taste anything that resembled a jambalaya. I moved to my lobster bisque. As I stirred the bisque, I came to find that the lobster slivers that were dropped on top of the soup were the only pieces of lobster that had ever graced the bisque. The flavor of the broth itself was quite laden with sherry; had I finished the bowl, I might have gotten drunk. To add insult to injury, there was a horrendous, bitter aftertaste to the bisque. I did not finish it. When our server returned, she saw the unfinished soup and asked if I wanted anything else. After numerous attempts on her part, I agreed to a bowl of the black bean soup. She took away the offal and when she returned she brought our entrees in addition to the new soup. I was mortified at the appearance of the fried shrimp dinner. The shrimp looked as though it was the left-over remnants of a pupu platter gone bad. I tried one of the shrimp and my thoughts were confirmed. The amount of oil that seeped out of the shrimp was amazing. The "new potatoes" that came with the shrimp were nothing more than deep fried potato squares that had the same abundance of latent oil. This is me shuddering...again. I moved on to my dinner feeling bad for my companion. As I looked at my sparse plate, I tried some of the grilled asparagus. This vegetable was grilled as an afterthought. It had been unevenly steamed quite a while before ever hitting the grill and it looked and tasted the part -- I ate the soggy tips and left the raw ends. The mahi-mahi didn't taste bad. I am still uncertain if this was of the dishes own merit or if my perception was skewed due to the previously consumed offal. Either way, I was able to eat the entire piece of fish and not think it was disgusting. At the end of the meal, I knew that I would never return to this restaurant. While the servers went out of their way to be helpful and give me what I wanted, the food had been influenced by too many lifeless tongues and the prices too steep for what you received. read more

Have eaten there several times over the years, most recently this week for lunch/reception after funeral. They put out some nice apps....really enjoyed the deviled eggs and soft pretzel pieces with cheese sauce. Even though I saw the mixed reviews, we decided to give this place a try and none of us were disappointed. It was fairly empty for a Friday night at 7 because we were immediately seated with a table of 7. Our server was very friendly and helpful. My wife and I shared the appetizer sampler and it was plenty for both of us. It came with fried calamari, jamaican jerk wings, fried shrimp, egg rolls, & lobster fondue. I enjoyed the first 3 items, but I probably wouldn't order them. I'm not sure what kind of egg rolls those were, but they were delicious especially dipped in the guava jelly. The lobster fondue was also a favorite although it was basically the cheesiness that I loved about it. I'm not sure if a lobster was even involved in the fondue. I do not eat a lot of seafood so I'm probably not the first person one should look to for advice on seafood restaurants. read more

We went to have lunch at Madfish Grill yesterday the waiter told me that I could have gluten-free bread then he came back about 10 minutes later and told me they didn't have any gluten-free bread and to choose another item he suggested the mahi tacos and I said I did not want them spicy and no tomatoes well they came spicy with tomatoes so then he said to order something else and so I ordered the vegan burger and some plantains so this is my third time the burger was burnt n bare and tasted like nothing. We got our bill n we got charged for the mahi tacos n the plain burger was $15 not worth it. I asked for the manager n she didn't seem to care She defened the kitchen n blamed the server . She said he needed training that he worked dinner shift. They gave us nothing for our trouble that was their mistake. I shall not go there again a big disappointment. read more

I have been back a couple of times since my last review. Their recent "two for $39" is not that good, the price would be right if the portions were not ridiculously minuscule and the glass of wine was not below half full, their menu has a lot of things that are better values on their own. The service continues to be good and the food quality excellent. The bar is getting rather noisy in the evening and the noise overflows in the dining area. I've forgiven Madfish for the earlier reviews and continue to frequent the place at least once a month for lunch or dinner. The restaurant is one of the better options for seafood within a 5 mile range. The seafood is almost always delicious and prepared with talent. Most of the servers are very good, the bartenders are talented and generous, but I still find that the host or hostess doesn't always know what's going on. I'm also hesitant to bring a party of more than four. The bar is already full before 5:30 and the larger tables are few. read more

Just had a very good lunch. Our server was extremely personable, efficient and helpful with the menu. One of us had the soup/sandwich combo, in this case lobster bisque and chicken salad sandwich. Both were excellent with the chicken salad overflowing the bread. The other one of us ordered the "build your salad" option, a spinach salad topped with warm bacon dressing and warm sirloin tips. The tips were plentiful and the dressing very tasty. We've eaten here often over the past fifteen years and have rarely been disappointed. There have been occasions when the food has taken a little too long to come out from the kitchen, but that really never ruined the meal. I had a hunch to try the Sunday Brunch We used to go here a couple times a month and quit going. The service is slow. That's not really a problem it's a nice place to sit drink bad coffee and talk. I thought they addressed the problem of cold food but it apears that the problem has reared its ugly head once again. I had the Southern Comfort it was delicious but cold and the Ham Steak would only have been one to a lilliputian. We quit going here because the last time we went for dinner we ordered Fish and Chips Keeping in mind this a fine dining seafood restaurant I was expecting something spectacular NOT Gordons over cooked fish patties. Long John Silvers would have been a better choice. This morning was my fault I should have known better. Do yourself a favor unless your over 80 years of age (Standard Clientele) and avoid this place like the beach during a Red Tide Bloom. Hubby and I have eaten here many times over the years and we have enjoyed our meals each time. They use real Ipswich clams for their friend clams and they taste just like the fried clams we would get in New Hampshire and Maine. Their homemade soups are so very good! Recently we had their half sandwich, half soup lunch special and I had their mango gazpacho and it was so good I wanted to lick the bowl. Hubby raved about the lobster bisque. Their outdoor seating is clean and in the shade. They follow strict Covid regulations and everything is super clean. If you're looking for fresh fish you can't go wrong with anything you order here. Worse customer service ever! Went to pick up an order that was to cost $10.69 but my card was charged for $121.93. When I asked questions such as when and how long money wrongfully taken from my card will be returned to me, the Supervisor got more upset than me and asked me to "get the hell out of here before I called the police". As if I was the wrong at fault here! i sent a letter to the owner and General manager. So according to the Supervisor, someone can charge your card up to 10 times the amount due and throw you out when you asked questions!
