This place needs a serious makeover. The inside smells of old wet beer and the bathrooms are pretty gross. The food is cafeteria level. Not sure why management won't give this place that has one of the biggest footprints in Occoquan a serious facelift. I don't give a one star rating often (maybe ever). We put our name in for an outdoor seat on a slow day, and accepted a short wait that was perfectly reasonable. They called us 20 minutes later to inform us that the outdoor space was closing for weather, and we could be seated inside immediately. All of that was fine They seated us by the window, and came back 10 minutes later for a drink order. 10 minutes later the drinks arrived and we ordered. We noticed that several people coming in after us were being seated outside, and assigned the same server. They should have informed us that we could move outside since the weather had changed. Instead the server forgot about us inside. Well over an hour after we were seated, and after several following groups with the same server outside had eaten, drank, paid, and left, I had to go to the host stand to find out why we were not being served or even checked on. We had been entirely forgotten. 5 minutes after going to the host stand, they offered to "let us close our tab and move outside to a new server." We declined and they brought our cold meals out with what looked like a full price check (they kept the itemized copy, so if there was any discount it wasn't significant). This is legitimately the worst restaurant experience I have had other than a McDonalds that put two raw, frozen patties on a double quarter pounder. My wife had her debit card laying on the table and they grabbed it without bringing a check. They returned with the credit slip but no itemized copy. This restaurant is a fantastic venue for all occasions and the staff are all exceptionally nice and such professionals. I was very disappointed with our recent visit to Madigan's. I made my reservation online for an outdoor table. We were seated inside and told that we can't make reservations for outside. The hostess blamed it on Open Table being "glitchy". The noise inside was horrible - you could hear the music from the bar and from the party upstairs which sounded like a bunch of noise when mixed together. The quality has gone significantly down since before the pandemic started. Inside and outside the smell of cleaner is overpowering to the point where it smells like a bathroom. They have this ridiculous policy where you can't make a reservation for outdoor seating. And it took them an additional half hour to bring out one meal (a veggie burger) when all others had their meals at the table. And they forgot my side salad. The food is ok. And they didn't know how to make an aperol spritz at their indoor bar. Overall so disappointing for such a pretty location. read more

Went for brunch, with advance reservations, could not accommodate our group on the patio even though it was practically empty, said could only do 9 or less, we had 13... Asked up front if we could split checks, was told no problem at all, spent well over 45 minutes waiting and trying to split checks as they did not take any notes of who ordered what, and then most checks ended up coming back wrong. Paid for a few people in my group as an anonymous surprise, waiter said no problem, gave him something to say that he said was totally cool, and when he came out he immediately told them I had paid for them and totally ruined it and made it awkward for the other people at my table!! We stopped for a quick, late afternoon bite after kayaking. Based on some of the reviews, we must have hit this place at a good time. A gorgeous day outside- we were greeted and seated immediately at an outside waterfront table. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable about the menu & helped make suggestions. Altogether our party ordered a kids cheeseburger, shrimp poboy and the salmon salad. All three were delicious! We had a great experience and will be back! I live in Occoquan and walk by Madigan's daily. It has always looked fun but the reviews were so tepid I hesitated to eat there. I attended an event on the top level and everything was great. Tonight my daughter and I ate outside in the Tiki Bar and it was a great experience. The band was playing good tunes. My daughter got the poke and I got the all American salad with grilled chicken and it was great. Our waitress Marin was very attentive and fun and the view was pretty awesome. Hosted a wedding reception at Madigan's last Friday. 90 guests in 90 degree temperature! The food was good and the set-up lovely. However, the heat was unbearable. Madigan's obliviously knew there was a problem because a portable air conditioning unit was eventually set-up. Service was poor (Know hiring is a problem post pandemic - pay better. When the wedding cake was served there were too many dirty dishes on the table to have room for the plate.) The DJ had the wrong date and was late resulting in no microphone. We won't go there again. Food was mediocre and much too salty. My wife got the shaved beef sandwich which was small and not worth $18 because they add $2 for getting their crappy fries instead of a bag of potato chips. We felt ripped off because they stick it to you on the bill: we only got the $16 breakfast burrito and $18 beef sandwich, no drinks except water, and yet the final bill was just over $40 before tip. Guess what? They charged over 3 percent of the final bill as a Visa credit card service fee, and that's on top of the Occoquan city tax of 3.5 percent, the 6 percent state sales tax, and some other fee that I can't recall. Of course they didn't say anything about their 3+ percent credit card service fee, and they caught me by surprise because we're just not used to any self-respecting and decent sit-down restaurant tacking on a Visa credit card service fee. As if that wasn't enough, after i went to the bathroom with my granddaughter I found white particles on the floor that looked a lot like coke. Made reservations for a Saturday. Had no problem getting a table, however once seated it took over 20 minutes to get a waiter to take our drink order. Placed our food order and was approached by the host who said they had a party of 18 coming in and needed us to move. We willing moved. Got our food and was not impressed. My husband got mahi mahi with mashed potatoes and chips. Best thing was the mashed potatoes. Fish was very bland. My plate however was worse. Crab cakes were filled with shells. I understand one or two here or there, not crunching like a chip with every bite. From the trenches of I-95, Madigon's Waterfront looks like a real winner. It's located in quaint historic Occoquan and it's got a fun looking tiki bar and live music that overlooks the river. How can you go wrong? Honestly...very wrong. The V Family brood came in looking for a great time and let completely disappointed. From the moment we sat down we were very unimpressed with the service. In fact, I was SO glad to see the low rating on Yelp later on because I thought we were being racially profiled. It turns out the servers here just don't care. Usually, I can forgive bad service for good food. This was not the case here. Their bread basket is literally hamburger rolls that was probably purchased in the discount bin at Giant. Our crab dip had about three crab pieces in it and was drenched in salt. The chips that were served with it were positively stale. My shrimp scampi, was DRENCHED in oil, butter and salt. While my love for these three things runs very high, I was still shocked by the massive puddle of grease left in my plate. As others have mentioned the bathrooms are located in their bar area which is dark, dank and smells strongly of smokers of years past. Save your hard earned money for other businesses. The raw oysters were fresh and delicious and the OMG which was swordfish, salmon, and mahi mahi was tasty. Of course they were understaffed but that's the norm these days. Waterfront dining in historic Occoquan might bring you visions of something along the lines of the restaurants in Old Town Alexandria. Or maybe the awesome spots along the Georgetown waterfront at Washington Harbor. Well, erase that from your mind, cause you are not going to get anything like that at Occoquan. In reality there are only like four restaurants along the Occoquan River, three of them in town and one near Route 1 in Woodbridge proper. Of the three in the town of Occoquan, Madigans Waterfront Restaurant is probably the best of the three and that's too bad because Madigan's is just not much to write home about. The potential is there, but the development has just not happened yet. The best part of the place in my opinion is the live music and tiki bar that always stays pretty active on the weekends. The dining area inside looks kinda nice, and they have a game room and full service bar. But with deck seating along the river and an outside tiki bar (complete with torches), and live music, what fool would stay indoors? The food really blows. I mean I've tried and tried and ordered several different things off the menu and it just keeps coming out blah. Very weak menu, with bland food and mediocre service. The mens room is usually not serviced on a regular basis, so it tends to get rather bad. I would give Madigan's only two stars if not for the outside seating by the water which is really awesome on a pleasant evening. The live entertainment on the weekends and the tiki bar are also a great plus. If I was coming here have some brews with the locals and enjoy an evening singing songs by Jimmy Buffet and Simon & Garfunkel then I guess I would be a happy camper. read more

Here's what you need to know about this place. It's in a cool location, right on the Occoquan river...with a great view of the bridge from the deck outside. This time of year, you can dine outside or in. The Deck has a lot of tables and there's a Tiki Bar if you're thirsty. The only thing that's a little annoying about that is the two person band with the huge Marshall speakers that will blow your ear drums. Not a great place to sit if you want a conversation without yelling across the table. I had the 'catch of the day', excellent broiled Grouper, came with choice of several sides. My friend had the Crab, she said she wasn't impressed. After dinner we went inside to check out the band....redneck city. Lot's of old drunk people smoking and chugging. Might be a cool place if you had a boat and could pull up to the dock and have a meal. If I go back, it will be just to sit on the deck and have a meal...without the band. read more

My family absolutely LOVES Madigans. We usually come here with my family of 8 and usually fpr dinner, but today...its just me and my Mom. We came for lunch and it was more crowded than we expected. We thought it was from high school graduations, but nope. I guess we are not the only ones who LOVE Madigans! The lunch menu was awesome (hey mussels in lemon/butter and lobsywr roll - boo yah!), and of course we love the ambiance on the water! K But i wanted to send a special shout out to the awesome staff. They were caught off guard with a serious bum rush... The wonderful HOSTESS, DEBBIE, was hauling tushy to accomodate everyone and everything and the wonderful BARTENDER, WENDY had to help out in tje restaurant. Very RUDE and LIAR hostess. We made a reservation for early dinner at 5:15pm on Sunday evening using OpenTable and wanted to sit outside. I wasn't under the impression that we were at Dupont Circle. Sure the staff isn't composed of Stepford Wives, but once again, this is Occoquan. They took our order, got us drinks, and delivered us food. If you're easily offended and think the staff should live up to antebellum standards, this may not be for you. I was really excited to try this place. Assumed the food would be great since it was waterfront. Boy, was I disappointed. The prices were very high too! My husband and I took my parents there to eat and I felt like it was a waste of money sad to say. My mother even said to me that we should have gone to the thai restaurant down the street. I would have given it one star but the server was polite and the mini crab cake was decent but everything else tasted horrible. The crab dip tasted like there was no crab as well as the crab tots. My husband and mother got the fish tacos that had no taste and super watery. We're guessing it was frozen. I got the fried fish sandwich which was totally bland and I had to ask for some salt. I really am upset we spent so much money here and we didn't enjoy our food. Another downer was that there was a cigar smoker couple tables down from us and all of his smoke floated to us. Gross! I just want to start by saying the staff and owner Beth Soto are the BEST!! My nephew who lives in Woodbridge VA asked me to help him plan a surprise party for his wife, I was more than willing but the problem was I live in NY. i googled restaurants and found Madigan's Waterfront. From the 1st time I called and spoke to Beth she was in constant contact with me. I can't begin to tell you how easy she made this whole process for me. The day before the party we went for lunch I had to see the place prior to the party. The water view is amazing but the food was delicious. I knew right then and there we had made a Great choice. Heather who was in charge of our party was nothing but super!!! She helped from setting up to making sure everything was perfect. Everyone raved about the food and the number of choices. I can't begin to tell you what an awesome restaurant this is. They also have an upstairs where they do weddings and large parties. They have a great bar with entertainment which we were able to enjoy after the party. They also have a tiki bar that you can enjoy in the warmer weather. Food is average, outdoor seating is nice but they could use more comfortable chairs, Suzanne our waitress was pleasant. We had their crab appetizers, burger, Big Fish, and kids chicken nuggets and popcorn shrimp. The kids weren't fans of their meals. This restaurant has so much potential. Can definitely be a fine dining restaurant but as it is now the place is super casual. Hostess was wearing spaghetti top with her bra straps out, the bar area is very dark and gloomy (I'm surprised people choose this for their wedding reception - we did see a wedding party here).
