The name pretty much tells you exactly what you're getting, and thankfully they're really good at both. The burgers are the main event. Big, messy in the way a good burger is supposed to be, and actually worth being hungry for. There are enough options that you can switch it up every time, although I usually end up staring at the menu for way too long just to order something similar to what I always get anyway. The fries are great alongside it, and obviously having a good beer with everything doesn't exactly hurt. The atmosphere is another reason I like this place. It's lively and casual without feeling like they're trying too hard to manufacture a "cool" restaurant. You can come in with friends, grab a burger and a beer, hang out for a while, and nobody is rushing you out the door. Service has always been friendly and pretty on top of things, even when they're busy. And considering how packed places like this can get, that deserves some credit. It's definitely not an everyday kind of meal unless you're trying to personally keep the beef industry afloat, but when you're craving a real burger, Burgers and Brew is hard to argue with. My guest arrived and the sever didn't come back for at least 10 min. But ok. No biggie. We ordered a soda and an iced tea. When those arrived we ordered food. My tacos came quickly and then we sat, looking at my food while we waited for the other entrée, the burger. 10 minutes later it shows up served by another server, no explanation or even acknowledgement that it took 10 minutes between me being served and my companion being served. Anyway our server was MIA for the rest of our stay. No offer of a refill for our beverages, no asking if the food was ok. Nothing. We stayed about 2 hours total and my normal policy is to double the tip because I have taken a table for about twice as long as normal. Unfortunately service was sub par. Oh and tea was incredibly strong not in a good way.

Being pregnant, she's operating with heightened food detection abilities that rival military technology, so she immediately declared, "We're coming back here." A week later we returned with her boyfriend and brother, and what followed can best be described as a competitive eating event. The hostess greeted us warmly, got us seated quickly, and we settled into the lively outdoor patio. Great atmosphere, cold drinks, sports on the TVs, and just enough energy to feel fun without feeling chaotic. We started with ahi bites, beer cheese pretzels, jalapeño poppers, and Brussels sprouts. The ahi bites were fantastic. Fresh ahi, creamy avocado, crispy wontons, and a little heat at the finish line. The pretzels were soft enough to pull apart with your fingers and the beer cheese was rich and addictive. The jalapeño poppers got an unexpected upgrade from the blackberry BBQ sauce, which gave them a sweet, smoky personality all their own. Then there were the Brussels sprouts. Whoever thought of pairing Brussels sprouts with blackberry drizzle deserves a raise. Sweet, savory, crispy, tender, and impossible to stop eating. For dinner we sampled the taco bowl, brisket bowl, rice bowl loaded with brisket, and a house salad. The taco bowl was colorful, fresh, and loaded with flavor. The brisket bowl was my personal favorite. Smoky brisket over fried rice with vegetables, crispy wontons, cotija cheese, and a sweet-spicy sauce that kept me digging in long after I should have stopped. The rice bowl with added brisket was almost comical when it arrived. Massive chunks of brisket perched on top like they owned the place. Tender, smoky, juicy, and worth every penny. Even the house salad was fresh enough to remind us we were technically eating vegetables. What stood out most was that every dish felt like someone in the kitchen actually cared. Nothing felt thrown together. Portions were generous, flavors were bold, and everything hit the table looking as good as it tasted. We originally found Parkside by following our noses. After this meal, we'll be following our cravings back

The Bear. Once, the coolest bar in Chico... But no longer. A friend from Ireland visited the infamous Chico, CA, to experience the "little big town's" most awesome sites and scenes, but Madison Bear Garden disappointed him, as well as everyone in our group. Racism, of all things! An Irish driver's license did not grant access to the Bear's urine-and-vomit-scented halls and overpriced drinks that are estimated to contain a grand total of 1% alcohol and 99% ice and other random stuff... Of course, sometimes the rules are just the rules, and I, of all people, must respect that... But the U-bar and the lovely Panama's, without question, allowed our friend to enter their establishments. But according to a balding Bear employee who very rudely told me, "We are not U-bar or Panama's" the question was undoubtedly answered. People of Chico... The Bear is apparently NOT Panama's or U-Bar... It's official. The Bear is The Bear, and at the Bear, we shall never again pay obscene amounts of American money for cheap drinks and barely edible food. Certainly (I hope!), if the owner had been outside, he would have accepted an Irishman's business (but the doorman, sadly, "likes his job" too much to ask)... Especially since, according to a significantly hot chick in the U-Bar restroom, "The Bear has to compete with La Salles and the Crazy Horse for business, so they, of all people, shouldn't be turning anyone away." And even though only a few people turned away from the Bear that night because of the discrimination displayed there, it was enough. Enough to start a chain reaction that only serves to drop the Bear down a few notches as far as the"competition" goes--if it can even be called a competition when The Bear is so clearly losing... I, unfortunately, happen to know a good amount of the employees there personally, and from the stories I hear, I would NOT, I repeat, WOULD NOT trust the food or anything else served there. And for some reason, when I brought this up in a crowd of people, one girl said, "Yeah, don't EVER trust the Bear; you get roofied there!" That's enough info for anyone to stay away, I'd say. So the moral of the story is; if the employees are potheaded, food-spittin', roofying douchebags, stay away. If the place smells like shit (literally, unfortunately), stay away. If the customers are okay with turning someone away just for being Irish... STAY AWAY. Be safe, be smart... Go to another bar. read more

Madison Bear Garden is one of those Chico places that feels like it has a personality of its own. If you've spent any amount of time around Chico, chances are you've ended up at the Bear at some point, and there's really nothing else quite like it. The whole place is packed with so much random stuff hanging from the walls and ceiling that you could probably eat here twenty times and still notice something new every time. Somehow all of it works and gives the place that unmistakable Bear atmosphere. The food is exactly what I want from a place like this: big burgers, good fries, cold drinks, and portions that don't leave you wondering what you're eating afterward. It's casual, filling, and doesn't take itself too seriously. The service has always been friendly and laid-back in my experience, even when the place is absolutely buzzing. And that's really when the Bear is at its best. It can be loud, crowded, a little chaotic, and full of Chico energy, but that's part of the fun. I don't make it here nearly as much as I used to, but every time I come back, it brings back that familiar feeling immediately. There are plenty of places to grab a burger and a beer, but there's only one Madison Bear Garden. Five stars, partly for the food and service, and partly because I'm pretty sure removing everything from those walls would qualify as an archaeological excavation. read more

Madison Bear Garden in Chico offers a decent dining experience, but it leaves much to be desired, especially when it comes to the value for money. The food was satisfactory, but given the prices, it didn't quite measure up to expectations. The portions were on the smaller side for what you paid, and while it wasn't bad, it certainly wasn't anything remarkable. Adding to the frustration, the kids' menu wasn't visible on the main menu board, and I had to ask for a separate one. This led to a mix-up, and I accidentally ordered my child a regular hamburger instead of something from the kids' selection, which was inconvenient. Another thing that bothered me was the ordering process for drinks. At Madison Bear Garden, you have to go to the bar to order both water and soda, which feels unnecessary and adds to the overall hassle. It's not ideal for families with kids, who might prefer to sit down and have everything taken care of in one go. While the atmosphere was lively, these small annoyances made the dining experience feel less enjoyable. It's a place with potential but needs some adjustments in terms of convenience and value. read more

This facility is no way up to code with its bathroom situation. There a total of five female bathrooms for a capacity of over 200 identified women who come in, completely unacceptable. This facility is prejudice against the LGTBQ+ community and has had their staff undergo competency trainings but persists in its unfair treatment toward people of the queer community. I am ashamed to have this bar be part of the Chico State community when it spews such hate and disrespect. I hope that the owners of this facility take responsibility for their staff and the amount of disrespect people have felt when attending this atmosphere. The philosophy of "don't come if you don't like it" is something that CSU, Chico should take notice of and take a stance. I feel repulsed and extremely offended by the actions of this restaurant turned bar at 9pm. Something needs to change, whether it be the health department come in or they reevaluate the set of the bar some change needs to take place. Madison Bear Garden is not for everyone especially when there is so much discrimination. read more

As a Chico State Freshman I immediately heard all the buzz about "The Bear", so of course I had to try it. LOCATION: First of all, the location couldn't be any better. It is literally a short stroll away from Chico's campus. It is extremely convenient for a college student with just enough time for a quick bite. PRICE: The food goes for an average amount, not too expensive, not as cheap it can be. But it's a business, so it's understandable. QUALITY: The burgers are AMAZING! The fries are a bit too salty and in order to get a drink you have to ask at the bar instead of paying for it along with the food. The last 2 times I've been here I have had awful experiences. This used to be a Chico staple and stop for all of us locals to meet up after years of college / young professional lives, but no more. First, a friend (27) who has been a customer since turning 21 was denied due to having an out of state drivers license. Second, they let me purchase a pitcher of beer, but then 3 minutes later told me it was "last call" (at 1:30am) and that we had to leave / finish our beer. They close at 2:00am, but their bartenders / staff were extremely unprofessional and rude. We now have new bars to spend our time and money at, rather than waste money at this declining establishment. read more

The Bear is a Chico landmark for good reason. Great food, great people, fun patio, dancing, and it's right downtown. It's packed with old props from movie sets so there is plenty of eye candy is well. They serve great drinks and they always have a pretty good list of Sierra Nevada brews on hand. They are known for their burgers. There is even one with peanut butter on it, but the wings are my favorite. They are huge! Somehow they manage to keep them crispy and spicy at the same time. I love going to The Bear! My favorite day to go is Tuesday because it's "Bear Wear," and that just means that if you have gear from The Bear then you wear it and get 50% off on everything (food and drinks)! They also have Bingo on Tuesday nights :) The service is pretty consistent although it can be slow when it is really busy. The biggest reason I like to go there for night life is because I actually feel safe unlike when I go to Riley's. Good food, awesome bartenders, chill place. read more

Ive been here numerous times and almost every time the burger is cold, the fries are cold and soft, the PA system sounds like the parents from the peanuts show. The bouncers are jerks, the decor that was once cool and hip is starting to look like your grandmother's attic filled with dusty old antiques. worst customer service i have ever experienced. their manager was the worst person i have ever talked too. I'm 22, didn't have an ID but their manager was the worst person i have honestly ever met. We recently rented the upstairs for a party! The service was really crappy and the bartender was extreamly rude when we left after not tipping a large tip!! She actually asked for a tip after not serving certain beers because she didn't want to call downstairs and was telling children they couldn't drink anymore sodas! Normally I swear by the bear. Food is amazing during lunch. Tuesday's half off for bear wear. Night time in Chico this is my go to place. Great environment, fun place until someone else breaks a glass near you and apparently you need to be escorted out for being too drunk to when they don't know how to handle the situation. I use too love the the bear, one night I went and walked my friend to her Uber and they wouldn't let me back in. I explained that all I wanted was to grab my purse and leave. They wouldn't let me in. They threatened to call the cops on me, for trying to grab my belongings and head home. They shoved me out into the rain and said "they would call the cops on me, for harassing them." Security guards are douche bags that take their jobs wayyyy too seriously. The places rules are horrible. Wouldn't let my buddy in because he was wearing a jersey. I understand not allowing any possible gang related clothing in. But they need to be reminded that they are in Chico. A very white college town with zero gangs. The bartenders there are the most unfriendly, straight faced, and job hating people I have ever encountered. I felt like I had to make him smile (some blond guy working at the front bar), and like I was wasting his time. We spent a ton if money renting the upstairs for my daughter birthday. The bartender was so rude and started cutting kids off on sodas. We also purchased the burger bar which started out ok but they couldn't keep the condiments full and the hamburgers got cold and gross quickly. The warm beet salad is practically a meal for two. Same with the calamari, which we could not finish! (My friend isn't crazy for the spices used in the calamari breading and dip, but I liked it okay.) Leave room for dessert. We recommend the cheesecake! Seating inside is intimate. There were only a few parties when we were there but I could imagine if the place was hopping, acoustics would be iffy. Sit at the bar to watch all the action behind the scenes. Outside seating is available and dogs are welcome there. Shoutout to our waitress Ellie!

We shared the black forest ham spatzle ( not sure if I spelled it correctly) which is a German inspired dish. It was delicious! Noodles cooked perfectly with plenty of ham and goodness in the bowl! First time I tried something a bit different and glad we ordered this ( came specially for this house favorite). Full bar and a ton of craft beers to choose from! The place is bicycle themed with a bike shop next door. Very cool and casual! When we left it was already very busy! I will come again because I really liked this dish plus the parking lot was shaded with beautiful trees and outside had a nice breeze!
