Fact: You can't have a party bus without a good box of wine. In this instance, by "good," I mean "the cheapest one you can find." Every other liquor store I went to either (1) thinks they are too good for boxed wine* or (2) carries boxed wine that is too good for me. I'm not going to pay $40 for a box of wine. That would be the equivalent of almost $9 a bottle. What am I, a billionaire? Either way, Kessler can cover all your boxed wine needs, and the guy behind the counter might be legitimately excited that you're buying two boxes, and run over to show you how to pull out the cardboard handle to carry them. Decent little liquor store a few steps from where I work. Great in a pinch to pick up a bottle when needed for a party or present. Or to just get drunk! Nice guys work here, and pretty knowledgeable too. Bargain bottles also on sale here. All the standard liquors and mixes as with most shops like this. Kessler's actually has an excellent whiskey selection and I've also found a couple of things I couldn't pick up elsewhere in the neighborhood. Such as a 375ml bottle of Chartreuse; I don't go through a whole lot of Chartreuse and hate to blow $55-60 for a full-size bottle, so this was a find. Got my Luxardo maraschino here after striking out at a few other places. If you're looking for Old Tom gin, they've got that, too (Hayman's, and I think they may have had Ransom). My husband and I went out of our way for this store as we wanted to find a couple nice bottles of wine as a gift. The person in the store recommended a nice red for a total of $37 each so we went for it, got to the till, swiped our card and left. It wasn't until later when checking our online banking we noticed that we had been charged nearly $115. We checked our receipt and it they had included a bottle of Charles Heidsieck Brut onto our receipt. We haven't been back to the store to complain as a) it was a couple days later we noticed, b) we couldn't prove it, and c) it's really out of our way and the receipt states "all sales final" therefore I doubt they would refund the bottle we did not receive. Moral of the story is ALWAYS CHECK YOUR RECEIPT while in the store! read more

I would never recommend this place to anyone! The prices are outrageous and the staff member who I spoke with was extremely rude. I asked for a specific bottle of champagne as a gift which led to him ridiculing my taste of champagne. Then I proceeded to ask him what he would suggest which led to him suggesting a bottle on the grounds that the royal family of England drinks it. Who cares! Thanks for the trivia buddy... This is not a standard liquor store in my book. Then again, i'm used to ABC. Anyways. The guys who run the place are young and extremely knowledgeable, and will give great recommendations. The guy with a ponytail is particularly cool. Any liquor store operator that doesn't roll their eyes when you ask (nicely) where the bargains are at, but instead directs you to the 99c airplane bottles of Red Stag, is running a FANTASTIC liquor store in my book. Their sales are great, and feature vodkas, gins, rums etc. that are more interesting than are typically found in your average liquor lineup. They also host some incredible free liquor and wine tastings on Friday evenings. I tried some pretty delicious stuff I can't afford yet. In sum: If you're (like me) poor, unsophisticated, and like to drink, this is pretty much the best liquor store (besides Warehouse, duh) you're going to find within reasonable distance. I frequent Kessler's because I live across the street but overall, their prices are very high and their selection of alcohol isn't the best (i.e. they were out of the large Kettel when I went the first time, and out of Kettel altogether on my second trip). I always frequent Kessler's when I'm in NY because it's close to my hotel, but I would recommend it enthusiastically because of the friendly staff. They are a diverse group who are knowledgeable about wines without any fluff or pompousness--or without any condescension as if I couldn't possibly know anything about wine. A good selection of wines in all price ranges is what I see when I walk in---not as cheap as supermarket liquor stores but not crazy 'wines of the rich and famous' prices either. I have never felt the need to post in a forum before, but after reading some of the posts here about Kessler's I have no hesitation to endorse them for my inaugeral debut. I have lived in NYC and specifically the neighborhood where Kessler's is located for years and can honestly say they go above and beyond as far as their genuine knowledge of their products, customer service, and recommendations and support of local, national and international known and not so well known producers. They consistanly carry an excellent and interesting selection of wines and spirits. They have always been honest and full of integrity. They are the farthest thing from "pushy" disinterested sales guys who just recommend the most expensive bottle in the shop. They really listen to what a customer's likes and dislikes are before making a recommendation. In addition, even if it has been months since my last purchase, they always seem to remember the last "try" i agreed to on their recommendation (even when I don't remember the name of it but could recognize the label when they show it), and are geniunely interested in whether I liked it or not and sincerely evaluate my comments to steer me in directions i may not have thought about without their input. I have now come to the point that when I am hosting a party or just stocking my own personal collection, I give them free reign to choose products for me with no more guidance than a price range and description of the meal and/or occasion, as they truly remember what I have tried and liked or disliked over the years, and they never disappoint. Because of their sincerity, honest business values and well rounded knowledge of the products they sell, I have found many new favorites that I never would have discovered otherwise.They have certainly earned my trust and no matter what neighborhood I reside in, Kessler's will always be my go- to. In addition, anyone I have recommended visit their store have also become true believers as well. If you are solely seeking just a quick in and out, i know what i want which is a run of the mill over publicized bottle, caring more about the label than whether it has real quality or suits your taste, then there are many stores im sure will cater to those needs. However, if you truly have an interest in having a place that not only stocks your go to favorites but perhaps introduces you to favorites you have yet to discover, Kessler's certainly has my unequivocal recommendation. read more
