When it's good, it's very good. When it's bad, it's very bad. We had a 5 star experience with chef quality food and a friendly waitress, followed two weeks later by a 1 star experience, a terrible cook and unpleasant waitress. This cook managed to ruin their classic she crab soup which I've had dozens of times before and was always lovely. Something was very off with the taste. When I mentioned something to that effect, the waitress offered no remedy. They used to leave a tiny pitcher of sherry on the table. Recently, they went to a modest splash. This waitress could have used an eye dropper her splash was so ridiculous - she literally put in a couple of drops! The portions were much smaller as well, but that was actually merciful, in light of the fact nothing was well prepared with the exception of the brussel sprouts asparagus, and seaweed which were all very good. The flounder, however, was dry and fishy. The Mahi, also dry. The grits were way under salted and flavorless. The mushroom appetizer, a bit undercooked. It'll be a long time before I chance coming to this place again, let alone bring guests!! What was so embarrassing is that we brought company and had bragged on the place - especially the soup. I always come here with my parents when I come home to visit from college. They have great selections of fish and different varieties of how to have it served. The price is a little steep for me for what they serve but so are most places. I've had both the crab cakes and the seared scallops which were both delicious. I think they probably could have put more scallops in the dish but that would be my only complaint. The cocktail selection is also good! I recommend the peachtini or the melontini! Definitely plan on coming back and and trying more dishes! read more

Hands down the best shrimp and grits I've ever had. This hidden gem has a pretty extensive craft beer list too. Something on the menu for everyone, not just seafood; But man do they know their seafood. If you're anywhere near Port Royal, get to this place for a meal! read more

Stay woke. Military and "non-locals" are unwelcome. We came on a Saturday evening at 5:30 PM. The host told us with a silly grin that either we could eat on the porch or make a reservation . You and the gentleman sitting at the bar went out of your way to make it known that our family was not welcome to eat there. The place was not crowded and there were at least five empty tables. Six of us decided to try Madison's. My mahi was small, cheese grits bland and cold, French fries cold. One of us had pasta and liked it, seafood platters were small, it took three tries to get a margarita that was drinkable. The creme brûlée was a miss. The A/C was not adequate. The place was clean and the service was friendly and welcoming. With that said, the food was a total let down. I ordered the Mahi sandwich. It was just OK-on the small side. It was luke warm (not close to hot) and my skinny fries were cold and had no flavor. Flavor was minimal at best. I love food and like to try new places. I am visiting with my mom who lives near by and we haven't been out to eat on our own in about a year. I live in Ireland and promise you that you can get a way better fish sandwich there! We were so looking forward to a nice luncheon here. Such a shame this place can't improve on the food. It has a nice atmosphere. My mom ordered the seafood pasta which basically was flavorless and watery. She added lots of pepper and decided to take most of it home and will have it as a snack after she adds some herbs and parm cheese to liven it up. In fairness, they didn't skimp on the amount of seafood. The biggest let down was the so called hot fudge Sunday! Seriously?! Come on people. Who do you think is eating in your restaurant?! They drizzled about a micro eye drop of fudge and caramel. When a hot fudge Sunday arrives at the table, heads should turn and you should be like.....Woah! The menu description made it sound very appetizing. NOT. They should be ashamed of themselves! Really. I am tempted to make a real Hot Fudge Sunday and bring it to the owner to give him a clue. At this point, I had to complain to the owner who was friendly but clearly clueless about what a hot fudge Sunday really should taste and look like. How about some hot fudge?! He kindly removed it from our bill but that wasn't the point. The point is, we wanted a nice meal and a tasty Sunday. Money was not an object. The so called ice cream was some kind of ice-milk by the way. Not real ice cream! When we go out to eat, we want the meal to be as good as our home cooking or better. My parents like to eat out once a week or more. They could easily have earned a new loyal customer here as it is so close to home. I was too kind to tell him the truth because I can tell that he really didn't care what I thought. He faked it. Shame. Don't waste your time or money at this place unless they hire a real chef to make good food. The sign says, "Where locals eat." Not my parents and they are as local as you get. I will follow this place as my husband and I come back once a year and stay through the winter. If perhaps they decide to get a new chef, we might reconsider giving it another go because it is close by and a charming atmosphere. Good luck. You are new to the town. It is very hard to get a patron to come back after a bad food experience.-Side note...the waitress had the nerve to ask my mom exactly where she lived in the area as if it mattered at this point. My mom is polite and answered but why is she so concerned about her address anyway?! That was tacky and unprofessional. Another thing, she sat at our table to take our order. Madison's is honestly one of the best restaurant I have been to in a while! My boyfriend and I are from out of town and last minute got a reservation for Valentine's Day weekend at Madison's and everything was absolutely amazing!! Our server, Cody, was very attentive, social, and personable with us all night! He gave us his recommendations, that we took advantage of, and everything we ate was outstanding!! I have had several meals at Madison's since they opened, usually lunch, and have never been disappointed. Tonight we came for supper. We sat on the porch for the first time; it was relaxed and very comfortable. They had 4 special entrees and we had a hard time chosing what we wanted because they all sounded so god. I got the whole fried flounder in apricot sauce with sides of sauted spinach and grits. The fish was fried perfectly and the apricot sauce, which I was a little concerned about - not sure I really wanted a sweet sauce on my fish, was delicious. The spinach was perfectly sauteed and seasoned with garlic. The grits, also wonderful. My husband got the pork chop special with tender greens and real mashed potatoes. He loved it! The server, Coty, was very friendly, conversational and attentive and took excellent care of us. We had an amazing dinner and will definitely be back! read more

Just went here and unfortunately the food was a bit disappointing. Place is cute on the inside, parking is limited just fyi. The staff was very friendly and nice, though not incredibly attentive. My water was never refilled and we were there 2.5 hrs. The food was definitely subpar especially for the prices. I ordered a margarita that was on the weak side. The apps were not impressive either. The fried green tomatoes were bland and the sauce that accompanied it was mediocre at best. The deviled eggs and pimento cheese were not flavorful or complex. I ordered the scallops for my entree and they were the smallest scallops I've ever had at a restaurant....not worth the almost $27 price tag. They were also over cooked. The asparagus was also overdone and the candied pecans made the dish sickly sweet, especially over already sweet creamed corn. Someone might want to examine the flavor and depth of that dish. If you know and enjoy good food, I'd say move on to somewhere else (like outside of Beaufort!). The "fancy" sauces and names make it seem like the dishes will impress but they will leave you disappointed. read more

Great local restaurant. Great food. Great atmosphere. Highly attentive staff. We are on the back porch and has a wonderful time. The restaurant has a full bar and is great for lunch or dinner. I have traveled all over the world and eaten at high end restaurants. The folks who say it's bad don't have a clue. Probably local snobs lol. read more

OK for lunch. The menu offerings for both lunch and dinner are impressive. However the restaurant is new and I have only visited once for lunch so any broad, judgmental opinions would not be fair beyond what we had for lunch. My wife had the mahi sandwich with house chips as a side which she enjoyed very much. I had the thin sliced prime rib sandwich with the house cut fries as the side. In addition we had the deviled eggs platter as an appetizer which my wife enjoyed as well. I however was less impressed by both the appetizer as well as the prime rib sandwich. In general I found everything under seasoned. Even my wife agreed almost everything needed at least a little salt. I agree you can't take salt away but you certainly should not leave it out of everything. Aside from the lack of salt it appeared Chef depended completely on horse radish for flavor in the appetizer. It definitely needed something else. Same issue with the prime rib sandwich it was just bland. Little if any spices were used to improve the flavor. The result was a bland tasting sandwich with an aujus that added nothing to the sandwich. As I said this restaurant is new. Considering the menu, the friendly and anxious to please staff I suspect it will improve and we will be returning soon to try their dinner menu and bar. read more

My husband and i had one of the best meals ever here- crabcakes were absolutely delicious, the spinach and mash potato had so much flavor it was unreal. We went back again two nights later and just had hamburgers and they were awesome as well. Service was great, this place is just wonderful and has become our favorite. read more

I have visited here twice hoping it would be a great place to go for dinner or a drink. The first time we visited the drinks tasted like water and the staff was complaining about each other to us while we were trying to enjoy a celebratory dinner. We were told bread was only given upon request and the food portions were small for the price. However, we decided to give it another try. This time the drinks were better but when trying to order (I have a food allergy) I was told three times to pick something else, nothing I wanted could be made without dairy and to "just order a burger because that's the nature of the beast". I have never been treated with such disrespect and been at a place where someone wouldn't even check with the chef to make pasta and veggies (which can be done very simply) without dairy. A food allergy is not a choice and it's a shame that I couldn't enjoy a nice meal here. Additionally, they consider themselves Vegan friendly but I have no idea what someone would eat here because I was told my only dairy free option was a burger or steak. read more

A coincidental, surprisingly wonderful find. We just so happened to have rented the AIRBNB right next door for two nights. We had a party of ten, which they accommodated extremely well considering our last minute reservation, and everything came out delightful. They had a Filet Mignon special which they called a tenderloin (that's fine, the tenderloin is where the filet is cut from), which was outstanding. The Mahi Mahi was superb, as was everything else (burgers, salads, cheese/meat platter. Our waitress Ronnie was very good, and dealt well with out New York antics. We had an additional two family members meet us later on in the evening, and their meals were equally as good as ours. Desserts were great, and the bartender was nice, talkative and thoughtful. We has such a wonderful time here, we came back for lunch the next day, with a party of fifteen. Ronnie was our waitress again, and although we were not allowed to pull three tables together due to room/service constraints, we had another wonderful meal. I had the seafood & grits, which consisted of shrimp and scallops sauteed in tasso ham gravy with fried grits, a touch of cream and lump crab, it was spectacular. Both dining experiences were fabulous, would definitely go back if I'm ever in Port Royal, SC again. read more

Cody was awesome. He deserves 5 stars. The rest of the staff glared at us as if we weren't even supposed to be eating there. Cody was the reason why we decided to stay. A bigger, older male server made all us feel extremely uncomfortable. He gave us the cold shoulder. The host was overrun by him as he told us to get up from a table to move to another. (we were so embarrassed) We asked for a booster seat and instead of simply getting it, he replied "I will get your server to 'do' that for you." not good. I had to hold my 2 yr old in my lap for what seemed like an eternity. A short, medium built blond haired female server gave us nasty stares the entire time we were there. She seemed to whisper to other servers in what appeared like she was talking ish about us. So rude. The host was going to sit us in her section and we could tell that this server told the host to seat us somewhere else. To make matters funnier, the servers' attitudes changed the minute they saw me chit chatting and laughing with popular local people (for example, the police chief of Port Royal, a chef from their own kitchen, etc) all of a sudden, their frowns turn to smiles, their glares disappear, the female server I mentioned earlier, came to the table to introduce herself. Found out that they had opened in the old site of one of our favorite restaurant, MoonDoggies. Stopped in for lunch. We both ordered the oyster basket with my wife ordering the Old Bay chips and I ordered the french fries. Both of us got the cole slaw and hush puppies. Right off the oysters are good, briny and crisped fried. My fries were good, but wife's chips on first bite where chewy and lacking flavor, both of our cole slaws were bland and the hush puppies had been cooked in oil to hot, outside way to crisp, inside still raw. Wife's chips got better as she worked her way down the pile, crisper and with the Old Bay taste. Service was ok, a little slow from lunch order to serving but I associated this to just opening four weeks earlier. Wife took the cole slaw home and doctored it up with white wine vinegar, celery seed, celery salt and thinly sliced onions. Much better. Will try them again after they get over the new restaurant opening jitters. read more
