My wife and I were wandering the neighborhood on a beautiful day off. I checked Yelp and found Madman Espresso. Glad I did! Staff behind the counter were very nice and helpful with a recommendation. I decided on the double espresso and my wife went with a cold brew. The espresso had great crema and the flavor was very smooth! My wife enjoyed the cold brew as well. On the way out, had a nice conversation with a gentleman that seemed to be the owner. Definitely a coffee shop with a good vibe! read more

Super cute coffee shop in the area of NYU and washington square park. The staff here are friendly. Yes, it is a small place but there is still a bit if room to sit at a table and enjoy your coffee. I got a specialty iced latte which had honey and cinnamon in it. There was a bit too much honey in it for my liking. This coffee shop was pretty packed when I went so it seems like it is a popular place. read more

Love this coffeeshop so much. Every time I'm in the area around NYU, I have to stop here and grab a cup of coffee. The coffee beans taste fresh and the temperature always comes out perfectly. I've never tried the flatbreads or pastries, but they always look delicious. There are a few seats inside, but I would say this is definitely a take out place and not a place to hang around to sit and chat. Service was expedited and quick. read more

First off: Dog friendly! They have this awesome "madman" niche going on inside and I loved it. When you walk in they have a few tables you can dine in and there are also sketch books and pencils, and a chess board! I ordered a Shakerato, just to try-- if you like iced shaken espressos go for it! My pup even took a nap while we stayed there for a bit just to relax and pass time. Would definitely come back to try their other menu items. They had some awesome things I wish I tried while I was there. read more

Such a cute little place and I really liked my coffee. Came with my dad and we ordered two macchiatos. He's from Italy and approved so I knew when I took that first sip it was going to be wonderful. Stopped by really quickly before heading to the Strand and this little shop is so unassuming but has amazing coffee! Got an iced americano with half & half and caramel syrup. Honestly, it tasted SO good, I'm not sure if it's their syrup or the coffee itself that's sweeter than others but I was so pleasantly surprised. Drinks are pretty good, the coffee is standard for a higher-quality NYC coffee shop. They have a good selection of alternative milks. Today I overheard the staff saying they had a pistachio milk, which I've never heard of before. I've also had the matcha latte and chai latte which are good too. Food is OK from what I've tried. The staff is always friendly and very prompt in making the drinks, even if the store is crowded -- I've never had to wait more than 3 minutes for a drink. They have a punch card rewards program, as well as a 10% student discount with a school ID. The outdoor seating arrangement is fantastic. It truly provides a nice vibe and a warm atmosphere. Both the espresso and bakery Madman locations have it and they're both near this dog grooming place so you're always sure to spot a nice variety of dogs while sitting here. read more

Really great coffee spot right near NYU in downtown Manhattan. Their specialty, espresso, and a fine job at that. Quaint little place with exclusive seating, with a very relaxing atmosphere. This place is very understated and does not feel corporate at all. What it does do well is the coffee. I had a latte and the barista knew what he was doing. The one on University has a cozy feel almost like you are in someone's living room. Nice place to grab a brew. read more

My favorite coffee/espresso spot. I love all the locations I have been to. I'm a huge fan of the latte and the cold brew. But even more, I appreciate the great, friendly service. in just a short time after I started making stops at Madman, I got to know the owners and staff as they got to know and welcome me. This is a nice place in a nice location. Take care if you sit by the window, because there's a tricky step down that can hammer your knee/back if you happen to be older than a college student when you leave. This was open for takeout during coronavirus a couple of days ago, but today the website says its quarantine hours would be until 7 pm and it was metal-gated shut before 5 (and possibly all day). read more

Tiny spot. Maybe seats 6 tops. Great vibe. Very friendly/chatty. Felt very welcomed and instantly comfortable. So I went in for the Green Tangerine Matcha Ade, which is the drink they should be talking about more. The green tangerine is the Jeju cheonggyul thing, the unripe fruit picked before it sweetens, so you get a sharper, almost yuzu-adjacent bitterness instead of orange juice sweetness. That's the right call against matcha. Grassy tea, tart citrus, light sugar, actual carbonation that hadn't gone flat by the time I got to the bottom. I asked what grade of matcha they use and how it's built, and got straight answers with zero eye-rolling. I came in with a group of friends and one of the bartenders, Will, was so visibly drunk that it made the entire experience uncomfortable. Slurred speech, wobbling behind the bar, taking orders while chewing food with his mouth open -- it was honestly embarrassing to watch. He looked like he absolutely did not want to be there. At one point, my group had been trying to get his attention for another round for quite a while while he stood around talking with coworkers. We then watched staff take a shot together, and when he finally came over he burped mid-conversation and literally had whatever he had just been drinking dribbling down his neckbeard. That was the moment where the whole thing went from unprofessional to just gross. What made it worse was that it didn't seem isolated to one employee. Throughout the night we watched staff openly taking shots and drinking behind the bar like it was a house party instead of a business. There's a difference between bar culture and complete lack of professionalism, and this crossed that line hard. One of the friends I was with actually frequents the DUMBO location and said that the last time she was there, the same bartender also seemed intoxicated, which makes this feel less like a bad night and more like an ongoing issue. The DUMBO location itself is in an amazing spot, which makes it even more disappointing. But ownership seriously needs to get control of what's going on there before someone gets hurt or the place develops a reputation for having drunk staff on the clock. Unfortunately, the experience was uncomfortable enough that my girlfriends and I won't be coming back. I genuinely hope the employee mentioned gets help if this is a regular thing, because nobody should be working service in that condition.
