It's so rare to find a quality latte for $4 these days.. The entrance is easy to miss as it's inside a shared marketplace. The space itself is also pretty small with a rustic wooden aesthetic. The menu is interestingly named -- "hot coffee, cold coffee, cold brew". Good thing I knew what a latte was haha. To be honest, I came here because I saw there was advanced latte art in the photos. Cool spot that advertises a super minimal menu. They seem happy to make any standard espresso drink (I got a cortado); less sure if they carry typical syrups. There's a ton of seating in a large space, but they don't have WiFi, so be prepared to hotspot if you want to get any work done. Service was also super friendly and it seems like a local hotspot; lots of customers striking conversation with the baristas. Super busy though; Friday morning at 9 AM, and every seat and table was taken. Settled for standing at one of the side countertops. The cortado itself was really good. This is my happy place. I find time to take a pause and decompress in the all too familiar hectic, manic energy of NYC. Some days, I come here to start the day as it will always be on a positive note. You walk into 9th street and take a look to your left at the simple, no fluff menu. Then you look to your right and there is Malcolm greeting you with the most genuine smile you've seen since Julia Roberts in Notting Hill. He asks "What can I get for you today!" in the most positive tone you've ever heard. I get the black coffee as always. It really does make a difference interacting with happy people with good energy on a daily basis. It is infectious and just improves your quality of life. Shoutout to Malcolm!!! Other days, I need to wind down after a long, stressful day of writing yelp reviews and teaching myself the guitar via youtube. It is perfect for this as well. I still get the black coffee because I'm a beast. Full disclosure, I'm not a coffee snob but my friends who are have all given this place 3 thumbs up. My only caveat is that you may get swept up in the flash flood of natural light that inundates 9th street espresso on a beautiful day. Sitting in here and taking a pause in my day really puts me in an almost spiritual state. That's the only way I can really describe it. It has me really thinking about things different. Decent spot for coffee. Not a good place to work. The drinks are reasonably priced. I ordered an iced chai for $5.50 which isn't bad for New York. The barista was friendly and didn't rush us out when it got close to closing time. The cafe was quiet and a good place to focus. There was almost no one chatting, and instead, people working silently to themselves. The caveat is: there are zero outlets and no wifi. Not the best place for working on a laptop. Everything about this place rocks. The ninth Street location on Avenue C is an oasis. However, there's one giant problem, there's a barista there who is a very sweet sweet person. (Malcolm) Sadly, 50% of the time I walk in and I walk out because his incredibly loud yelling just completely ruins any kind of calm experience. I've been coming to this location for over 10 years, and it never disappoints. The other ninth street espresso locations usually also make great coffee, but there's just something special about this one! I stopped in for my usual espresso w/ milk over the weekend and it took it to the community garden across the street, which was so pleasant. There's also a nice little bench seating area right outside the coffee shop if it's not too crowded. The staff is friendly, and they enforce social distancing and other covid procedures, which is always appreciated. Ninth street's coffee is very consistent, which is one of the most important qualities in a coffee shop, I think. They also have a solid selection of food items, so if you're a commuter in the area, this could easily become a regular spot. I love that their espresso w/ milk isn't too diluted like a lot of standard lattes, and their beans have a bold, distinctive flavor that replicates well if you buy them to brew at home. read more

A hidden gem tucked away in Alphabet City. I don't know why I've never noticed it before, because I've definitely parked my car on the same block a couple of times. My friend and I stopped by because it was one of the few cafes near my apartment open early on Sunday morning. The menu is really simple, but they brew a mean cup of joe! We both ordered iced lattes, which were really delicious, but what I really enjoyed was the ambiance of the cafe. It is sparsely decorated, but thoughtfully so, and there is plenty of sitting and standing room whether you want to sit at the counter or at a table. We hung around and studied for an hour before heading off to breakfast, and it was a really enjoyable study session, given the quiet din of the other patrons and the natural sunlight! I could study here for hours!! They also have free wifi and a bathroom available for customers, although I didn't notice any outlets available. Oh well! That said, the quality is definitely above par. The decor is a minimalist aesthetic: a lot of empty space, very little furniture (even pre-Covid), and it could double as an art gallery. Depending on how comfortable you are in these worlds, you will either like it or feel a little out of place. I have never written a review before or used Yelp. I just went here and got a $15 iced dirty chai and it was more sour than the definition of the word 'sour'. I was not aware that something could taste as bad and as sour as this drink. I asked my roommate to try it and they were completely astonished. Why was the drink $15? I only had a little bit of money. I just wanted a dirty chai and to have a good day. Why was the barista so rude? Why did he talk to the customer in front of me for 10 minutes and then when it was finally my turn he was so mean to me? Why did he act like my presence was such an inconvenience and then proceed to charge me $15 and hand me a drink that was made of urine and sour milk? I'm not sure if I should file a lawsuit? Come for the coffee, stay for the relaxing vibes. These guys have some of the best drip coffee I've had in NYC. I usually have a bag of their beans at home when I don't want to make the walk in the morning. Their espresso drinks are pretty good too, especially with a lil oat milk on top. Not a huge fan of their pastries but that's not why anyone's coming here. The cafe itself is great. Scattered with a few people chatting, reading, sketching, etc and it overlooks one of the ABC gardens. I will say, their staff might come off as a little standoff-ish but don't take it personally. For what it's worth I've been going there about 3-4 times a week for 4 months and have yet to exchange names with anyone working there BUT to be fair, it's a two way street!
