Went to kick off my birthday celebration and it was such an experience! The staff is a 10/10 in attentiveness and making great recommendations. The food was delicious especially the fried cheese, plantain chips and cabbage. The fish was as described; thin. It was flavorful and good. The rice was leftover and burnt in certain bites, so that is where they lost the point. They made my birthday really special with the steamers and singing. We had a very good lunch at Madrono restaurant. It's a very nice looking space with table clothes and well-dressed servers who were eager to please and serve. We started with melon and dragonfruit drinks which were like aguas frescas. For starters we tried the Taquitos and Chancho con Yucca and they were excellent. The pork tenderloin chunks in the Chancho were done well and had a tasty coating of spices. We loved the chopped cabbage. We also liked the pulled beef in the Taquitos. The fried beans were creamy and delicious. In fact, everything on our plates was delicious! For mains, we had the Fajitas de Carne and Lengua en Salsa. Both were very good. I haven't had a tamale in a while so I decided to try the Indio Maiz; the sweet corn was good as was the sour cream and soft cheese. Yum. I really enjoyed Maranos. When you walk inside the ambiance is elegant yet casual. We ordered the churrasco and fried cheese (queso frito). The portions were good in comparison to Los Ranchos and the steak was extremely flavorful and soft. They also have a selection of sauces for the steak or your meal. The service was great. Our only complaint was that they served canned beverages. If you are somebody that drinks a lot of soda, the bill can quickly get expensive. We love Nicaraguan food and frequently dine at other places but this restaurant by far is the best. The wait can be long on the weekends with larger parties so just be aware of that. read more

This is for the pick up order that I got. I wanted to eat dine in, but the place does not take reservations and was PACKED with a long line of groups of diners waiting their turn to this nom nom nom provided. DELISH. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. And yes, AUTHENTIC! I have lived in Nicaragua several times for at least 4 months each over the last decade. The food is just like anything that you would get at a street vendor, restaurant or any homestyle meal. I had a bunch of relatives in town helping me to move into my new apartment and wanted to treat them to an authentic cena nica. They are from the Midwest and would never have the opportunity to have Nicaraguan food outside of Miami. I ordered the BANDEJA DE ANTOJITOS "EL MADROÑO," (Traditional Nicaraguan cuisine sampler) extra crema, extra chimichurri and the nacatamal. The platter of antijitos is GINORMOUS and heaping with food. It comes on a hardy plastic circular tray, maybe 15" in diameter, with a plastic lid that snaps onto the platter and then wrapped in a heavy duty plastic bag. Each of the items that are marinated are wrapped in tin foil to not make the rest of the items soggy. VERY thoughtfully packed. The crema, salsas, chimichurri, and other sauces came in a separate plastic bag. Now for the details: The platter had: Gallo Pinto Refried beans Beans with...spices and other goodies (did not know this item!) Grilled/fried pork chunks Marinated & grilled chicken breast Marinated and grilled carne asada Fried cheese Boiled yucca Maduros (sweet plaintains) Tostones (plantain chips) Taquitos with beef (little fried tacos stuffed with beef) Chips Chicharrones (crackling) Reposado (Nicaraguan/Latin American style cole slaw) EVERYTHING was delish! All of the meat was SO. TENDER. Marinated, grilled to perfection with a BURST of umami flavor that was also perfectly balanced. Everyone fought over the taquitos, fried cheese and maduros. There were 6 of us and we were stuffed, unable to finish it all. Since they were flying out the following day, I got to take the leftovers all for myself (SCORE!! WIN FOR ME!) A nacatamal is like what one would think of when ordering a tamale at a Mexican restaurant- but do not be fooled! This nacatamal is the size of a Chipotle burrito. It is HUGE. Wrapped in a banana leaf as traditionally served in Nicaragua, the cornmeal is flavored with a unique combo of spices and herbs that I have yet to figure out or replicate. It is stuffed with tender pork chunks, more spices, I think tomato (?) and other goodies. The combo is unique and unlike any Mexican tamale. All in all, I could tell that these Midwesterners were very skeptical about this "exotic" food when I unwrapped the goodies, but by the end, I had heard "delicious," "amazing" and "outstanding" more times than I can count. DEFINITELY stop by here! They also have lunch specials and are on Doordash, Ubereats, etc. If you are dining in, there is ample parking in the lot and there is outdoor seating as well. read more

The food here is always excellent, however they don't take reservations so there is always the risk of a very long wait (we were initially told 30-40 minutes) or simply being to capacity as it is always very full and it's easy to understand why: food is great all around with big portions (salad and two sides are included with each entree) and the price point is lower than in most restaurants in Miami. Appetizer: fried cheese with tajadas (fried plantain chips in strips) and ensalada de repollo (cole slaw salad--more like a fresher-tasting sauerkraut). Churrasco is always a classic choice. Although Churrasco in Nicaragua is typically a better cut of meat, in Miami--including El Madroño--it is made from skirt steak--the Argentine way. Not the same higher quality as in Nicaragua but it satisfies and here it is seasoned in way that doesn't even need Nicaraguan Chimichurri (a bit different than the Argentine version). Pollo Norteño (grilled chicken with achiote seasoning): the server suggested "a la placha" versus "a la parrilla" because it would be juicier. It was true though "a la parrila would have had those wonderful grilled flavors. Over all it was very good. Side rice was very good, same with the Cole slaw, and maduro plantains were perfect. Dessert: Pablo Segundo: a combination of Pio Quinto (named after a saint Pope) and tres leches (tres leches cake topped with Pio Quinto's custard)--a better version of the Tres Leches although like most tres leches it was too sweet and difficult to eat. However it's a large portion and perfect for sharing with others. The only problem was that they topped with a cute decorative dove but we weren't sure if it was edible--and technically restaurants shouldn't put anything in food that isn't edible as it can confuse the consumer. Cacao: Nicaraguan chocolate milk made from chocolate's purest form (cacao) and laced with cinnamon and vanilla. Excellent version here and worth stopping at the side pastry section to order it to go. Pastries: a good assortment among the best are pastelitos de pollo (mini chicken pies), pastelitos de piña (mini pineapple pies available in fried and baked versions), pico suave (bread triangle "beaks" filled with sweetened cheese). All in all good experience, great service, white table cloth tables and restrained minimalist decor. They would de well to expand their restaurant size to accommodate more patrons. read more

I would like to start off by saying that I am from Nicaragua and I have been coming to this restaurant for years. The service is always great, the place is clean and the food is always good. Yesterday, my family and I visited Madroño restaurant as a party of 7 for my son's birthday, who loves the food and their birthday celebration. Everything was fine until the waiter brought our check. My husband quickly noticed a charge for the dessert of $11.75 which is fine because we are consuming it, but then also an additional charge of $5.25 for "celebration." What is this charge? For them coming and throwing stringers and the candle? They don't even sing, the music plays in the background. Since when do restaurants charge for bringing you your charged dessert with a sparkler candle and putting a birthday song on? I find this to be in very poor taste especially that it is not disclosed when you say it's a birthday. Furthermore, as we are looking at the bill we see a "transaction processing fee." At first I thought it may have been the famous 3%-4% service fee if you use a credit card, but we also noticed that after the fee it included taxes and gratuity. So what exactly is this "transaction processing fee?" is this a fee for me eating at your restaurant? Like I said, I've been coming here for years and I know that the manager is the only one behind the register are we paying his salary? Is that what the fee is? As you look down on the bill it separates the cost if you pay cash or credit card but the transaction fee and taxes are still included. I would like the owners of this restaurant to know that they have lost myself and family as customers. Your greedy tactics and dishonest charges has caused this to go from a wonderful mom and pop restaurant to a simple business where new and loyal customers are blinded by charges. While I understand the cost of living has increased and the cost of groceries and food items, I do not understand the abuse of your "transactions". These fees are wrong and probably illegal. After more than ten years; yep it's been awhile returning to Sweetwater; I was so happy to see how much this beloved spot has evolved -- beautifully redesigned with all-white walls and distressed wood furniture that creates a clean, cozy, and inviting vibe. The service was top-notch -- attentive, friendly, and genuinely caring -- making my son's birthday feel extra special with a surprise treat. We decided to skip on appetizers since are friends - regular patrons- told us the main courses come in hearty portions -- and they were spot on. It also has onions and Central American cream in it, it is one of my favorite dishes to eat honestly. The carne asada was cooked well done as I requested it. It came with white rice and yuca frita. Although, she stated that it wasn't the ones that come in the bag. We were disappointed when we got the dish, we actually didn't eat it because the salad also didn't have any flavor to it. This is one of my favorite places to visit in Miami when I'm craving home-style food from my country, Nicaragua. The service here is amazing, and the food is phenomenal. As an appetizer, I had the chanco con yuca, and it was delicious. The yuca was soft and flavorful. My usual dish is churrasco, but this time I tried La Lengua en Salsa, which was okay. I also tried Filete de Pescado Montelimar, and it was finger-licking good. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of my favorite dish of the night. The gallo pinto, maduros, and salad were also delicious. They use plátanos instead of croutons, and I thought that was a creative touch. Their jugo de maracuyá was also flavorful. My family and I have come here several times because the food is great and we've always looked forward to visiting. Unfortunately, this is now the third time we've come as a group of 11 to celebrate a birthday and were not able to be seated. Each time, we were either turned away or told the wait would be 2-3 hours, even though there were multiple large tables available. On one visit, we even saw a table reserved for a party of 22, despite being told reservations aren't accepted. We have not been treated kindly during these visits--the staff have been rude, dismissive, and unhelpful, which made the experience even worse.
