Madurai Virundhu is a Tamil restaurant and a good one for Indy. Everything was delicious and authentic. We visited on Sunday as a group of 14, and we went right when the place opened at 11:30. Note this place gets very very busy and it has reasons of course. For $25/head the buffet is very good. Everything from Indian breakfast items to fish, chicken and mutton appetizers and followed by chicken and mutton biryani the spread was so royal. We sat for about 2 hours and ate to our hearts content. Service was pretty quick and we just couldn't stop eating . The Thalappakatti Biryani is a renowned South Indian rice dish originating from Tamil Nadu, pair with mutton curry it was a combo to die for. Overall highly recommended place and do try them. read more

Was in Indiana for the weekend so we decided to try this restaurant. Found it on yelp and I'm so glad I did. The food was really good. It was good south Indian style buffet. There were so many different items to choose from. They had a huge variety of dishes, vegetarian, meat items, idli, sambar. Everything was excellent. The food was super flavorful. The place was packed during lunchtime and this was on a Sunday so I highly recommend getting a reservation ahead of time if you're going as a big group. Do check out this place for really good food. However, the food quality is below average, with minimal variation in menu offerings and a restrictive three-hour service window. The ambience is pleasant, especially given that it is a new establishment. One of the very tasty and unique item buffet I had in USA. I was travelling from GA to Chicago and stopped by and I am glad that I did. The buffet seems very famous as the place ia small and there was a long wait on Sunday afternoon. But luckily, as we were only 2, we got the table immediately. The staff are super frindly. There is a huge section of Vegeterian items including South Indian tiffins - Idly, gaari, aritikaya bajji(plantain), one more bajji, spinach pakodi, cutlet, veg samosa, sambar, rasam, chick pea salad, 3 chutneys (coconut, tomato, ginger), jack fruit biryani, ven pongal, potato fry ( very tasty), paneer curry, brinjal curry, one another veg curry, parotta. And a separate nonveg section with chicken, mutton and fish items along with chicken soup Also they have tea and mango lassi dispenser. All the items are delicious and some are unique. I have given a Google review 2 months back "I used to like this place but now they don't care about their food quality or being nice to customers at all. I ordered a medium spice Biryani and they gave spiciest of Biryani and complaining about it did nothing. The taste was sub par and raita is just buttermilk in a spoon" And then 2 weeks back it was our anniversary and my wife wanted to go to this place that serves Thursday dosa night buffet. She regretted her decision soon as she complained that all the potatoes in samosa and curries and in masala of dosa are rotten and tasting bad. The whole buffet was bad with the exception of Gulab Jamoon and Mango lassi. Later, I noticed on my credit card statement that they had actually charged me $63.96 - an extra $20. When I contacted my credit card company, they suggested I go back to the restaurant for a quick fix. But when I did, the owner was rude, dismissive, and refused to even check his sales system, claiming it was "too old." Instead of resolving the overcharge, he insisted I "must have taken something else for $20," which was simply not true. This is fraudulent behavior and extremely poor customer service. Please be cautious if you plan to eat there, and always double-check your receipts and statements. Absolutely amazing! We went on Sunday for the lunch buffet and there were so many fresh, hot & delicious items! Everything was so well spiced and flavored, our group enjoyed trying tons of items we never have before. The buffet includes appetizers, salad items, soups, many main dishes with different meats and rices, plus they have a mango lassi dispenser included with the buffet. We were all too full for desserts! The staff was very nice and helpful, and the dining area was clean! The food came out by 11:45, it was a good thing we got there at 11:30, the whole place was packed by the time we left! Highly recommend and I will be back the next time I'm in town! read more

Ambiance is ok. Server was very attentive. We did a Friday lunch buffet. Below are some I tried. Nothing was spicy except the Karaikudi chicken, which was good. The sheer kurma dessert was a disaster, a slime, but gulab Jamoon was fair. The masala dosa was good. Medhu vada was a greasy item that was disappointing. Sambar could use more spice and tamarind. Masala chai was really good. Wish they keep porcelain cups instead of the nasty foam cups for tea that took away my mood. Didn't taste much like a South Indian food over all. Ordered carry out because this place is close to work. Literally the best Indian in the city! Had dosas, Chana and Tikki Masala, samosas and naan everything was incredible! Absolutely horrendous. Give this restaurant a call before coming here. We drove 150 miles to visit the restaurant because the menu sounded so appealing and some friends recommended the place. They do not have A'La Carte in afternoon during weekends or when they serve buffet. It's not mentioned bloody anywhere. They are the least accommodating restaurant ever. Half the menu is not available, anything you ask for is not there. Nowhere is it mentioned it's only Buffet during weekends, and whoever was available to talk would not address any issues. Do not have any expectation based on the menu. With service like this it doesn't matter how good or if at all the food was good. Find a different restaurant. The so called floor manager was just laughing for everything we asked about the menu. Waste of bloody time. My friends and wife tried the food just coz we had driven all the way here and they were hungry. The pongal, samosa, cutlet were salty, total disappointment. We were debating if the food was even fresh - there was no bloody aroma which is an indication of good ingredients in South Indian non vegetarian cooking. 60 % of the buffet was North Indian and not authentic South Indian as advertised. Baingan bharta or chicken or paneer tikka is not authentic South Indian. There was no parotta (Madurai is famous for it btw) but only naan. Don't bother looking at their menu , their authentic South Indian menu is non existent. Only the Indo Chinese is available even that is generic. Take it from someone who grew up in Madurai - do not fall for the bloody name and the fake menu. There is nothing Madurai about this place. My friends did mention some of the non vegetarian options in the buffet was good but was disappointed with the fish fry being bland. The pictures are supposed to be desserts (the yellow one in the picture is the most watered down custard ever). The sheer kurma was chi kurma. The Briyani offered was Ambur Briyani and not Dindigul thalapakatti. They didn't even use the proper Jeera Samba rice for Briyani but felt like it was sona masoori rice and it was like mush. The tea on offer was not the best too. Don't know how you can run a restaurant and mess making tea. Very cramped seating layout, considering it's a buffet there should be more space between tables for people to bloody walk with plates of food. For it's a South Indian buffet , there was no curd rice, no jigarthanda (the most iconic Madurai dessert) to order, no payasam - absolutely nothing South Indian about the dessert section. Mysore Pak apparently tasted like Doodh Peda (which are two different sweets) please consider a different restaurant. This is a bloody disgrace in the name of "Madurai Virundhu" which means "Madurai Feast". For 20$+ a plate - they can at least provide better quality plates - the plates were of the cheap quality plastic not even melamine plates. Wonder if anything is authentic about this place. I visit an Indian restaurant twice a month and I am always trying new ones. Madurai Virundhu is absolutely worthy of your time! The service was excellent and the restaurant ambiance is modern with taste. But, most important to me, the food was excellent. The Madurai Virundhu waiter explained the spice level quickly and honestly. My food was prepared correctly and the taste was wonderful! Definitely looking forward to my next visit here! read more
