Due to word of mouth recommendations, we decided to visit Maestro, a new restaurant which had taken over the space previously occupied by Ceiling Zero. We called ahead for an 8: PM Saturday night reservation and much to our suprise, we seated immediatly. The host provided menus and it was then that we received our second suprise--the prices were quite reasonable. After just a little bit too long our wait person came along to take our drink order, to ask if we had any questions and to tell us of the specials of the day. Having gotten all the preliminary issues out of the way she disappeared. We gazed at the menu for a bit and decided upon our dinner selections for that meal. While waiting for our drinks to appear we noticed the table next to us. Five couples were seated there, and apparently they all were unhappy about something or other. Finally our drinks came and we gave our wait person our order. As we sipped the drinks the noise at the next table grew a bit more boisterous. Yikes! What was going on? Unless the people became physical we decided to ignore them and not let them spoil our dinner. Then, the manager arrived at their table, spoke to them sotto voce, and moved away to watch them exit the restaurant. Back at our table a half-hour ticked away before our salads, a plate of hummus and a bread basket arrived. Finally, something to put in our stomachs. Keep in mind that it is now 8:40 PM and WE ARE HUNGRY! We thought it unusual that the menu represented a somewhat Amer-Euro selection, and here was hummus--definitely Middle-Eastern. Oh well, a melange makes it interesting. As the clock nudged towards 9:00 PM we hailed down our wait person to find out what happened to our order. She assured us that it would be out right away. So, "right away" became ten minutes later, but at last I would be dining on a wonderful sauteed river trout and my husband would be enjoying a succulent roasted duck. The food was wonderful; prepared with just the right seasonings. The service was abominable. Perhaps there are simply not enough servers to work the dining room. And now we know why the people at the other table left without having had dinner. A word of advice: Because the restaurant is located on the second floor of a commercial building and there are many stairs to climb, the place is not accessible to anyone with knee, hip or other physical limitations. I'd call this restaurant a "Hidden Gem". It's out of the way, in an industrial area, so not a place you would just happen to find. I found out about Maestro through www.gdine.com, a wonderful dining service which offers discounts in the Chicago area and New York only. What a fabulous service this is, found by me in a Yelp Review! Now about the restaurant. The food was wonderful, large portions, freshly made. The waiter brought out warm rolls with homemade hummus to begin our meal. The appetizers we had were calamari - wonderful, warm, not greasy; mussels with a fabulous tomato base broth;and a spicy salad loaded with lobster. We also had a choice between two soups or salad, all homemade, very good. Our entrees were equally good; rib eye steak, juicy, med. rare; a strip steak, the same comments (too large to finish); duck, with a wonderful sauce (also too large to finish); and coconut shrimp, very tasty. The only negative was the vegetables. They tasted as if they had been frozen and then reheated. Our service was very good. I would return. read more

We went there for dinner last night. The decor was very nice, the service was pleasant, and what is even more important, the place was clean. My husband had filet mignon and I ordered grilled salmon. The food was ok, I would give it 4 stars out of 5. The salmon was well cooked and I liked the dressing it came with. According to my hubby, the meat could be more tender and juicier. For desert we got ice cream, which tasted very yummy and one portion was more than enough for both of us - it was huge! Overall the experience was good, we will come back. read more

Visited the restaurant recently to get some Russian food. First of all, impossible to make a reservation because nobody picks up the phone even though the restaurant is supposed to be open as per it's web-site and voicemail recording. Second, I hate the ambiance, it's smelly, especially at the entrance and stairs, and it's cold inside. Third, I don't understand how it is listed in $-$$ category, I found it VERY overpriced for what you get. The regular printed menu is ok, but if you order anything from the 'Russian' dinner menu, you are in for a big surprise. There is no printed menu for this one, it exists in water's head, and it does not come with sizes nor prices. Leaving aside hefty prices on anything from the Russian menu and drinks, I was shocked that we were charged $11- $13 for each type of cold cut on small size platter instead of being charged for one because based on the size of it it, was one appetizer. The food was below average (pickled mushrooms were not fresh and tasted of rancid oil, herring too fishy, potatoes with mushrooms did not have any flavor like they are supposed to have). I still can't get over $260 bill for 4 people for appetizers only, one main course and one mediocre bottle of wine. This is absurd. Will not be back again. Until things change. The only bright spot - the waiter was very friendly and accommodating. read more

My favorite place for lunch and dinner. The $8.50 lunch specials are great tasting and a great deal. My favorite lunch is the Basa fish and you can't go wrong with the seared tuna tacos , best on the North Shore . The NY strip steak is always a great choice for dinner . read more

Their lunch express combo for $8 gives you a lot of food. I've tried their daily pasta a few times and it was pretty good. It comes with a drink, and a choice of soup or fries. You have to make sure you clearly tell them that you want the LUNCH EXPRESS COMBO though. The guy who took my order didn't hear me one time and almost charged me full price, which is pretty expensive, almost double the price! But he took my order back to the kitchen and submitted a new order I think. Other people had the same problem with the wait staff confusing the order. They said some harsh words and stormed out after having to pay full price when they were expecting the combo price. I think if you work there, you should expect that people will want to get the combo deal during lunch. Or at least ask the customers to make sure you got the order right, since you know the menu better and you know that there are two very different options that can be confused. read more

Really super annoyed. Checked the restaurant's website, and the hours are clearly stated until 10:00 pm. Yelp says they're open late. Five of us dash over there for an early dinner only to see that they're not open for dinner. Fix your website. read more

It's a very average establishment; nothing special. It's specialty is Russian themed banquets with entertainment and dancing. We visited early Saturday evening before the entertainment began. The strip steak was just average as was the shrimp dinner. I'm sure the banquet meals are far superior. read more

I am not the type of person that is satisfied with a piece of steak mashed potatoes and broccoli, I wouldn't go to a restaurants for that since I can make that at home. When I go to eat out I want fun food cooked by talented chefs and that is why I am the biggest fan of Spanish tapas. At Maestro it is different than tapas but there is a wide variety of appetizers and entrees that will satisfy your palate. I have never had anything that didn't taste good there. Simply put, the food and service cannot be beat. I've been to Maestro countless times over the years, and they never disappoint whether it's for a big birthday celebration or a quick delicious lunch during the work week. My fiancé loves the steak and Chilean sea bass (so fresh and amazing!) and I love their seafood paella (huge portions!). Whether you grab an expertly made cocktail at the bar or book a reservation for a party, you will leave totally satisfied. Live music on the weekends is a blast too! read more

I had my birthday party there on Friday. The plan was to have a family dinner. I will start with positives. The food was EXCELLENT. It is clearly one of my favorite restaurants. I am definitely coming back. We had thirty people in our party and all of them were ordering different entrées from a menu. Everybody commented on how fresh and delicious their choice was. On the downside though - it was rather slow service. I pre-ordered appetizers in hope it will speed-up the process. Did not work. I am pretty sure, if I ordered the package, it will be faster. However, I did not like "family style" service for main course in package (I prefer my guests to choose what they will eat). To our surprise, there was a live music. It was very nice. We had the opportunity to dance which made a long wait more bearable. Bottom line, I would highly recommend this restaurant for couples, small parties, etc. For bigger parties be prepared to wait. It was our first visit and went with a group of eight friends. The ambiance is very well done and the food is excellent. From the appetizers to dessert everything was wonderful. The owner comes from a family of chefs and you can easily tell his passion for well made and fresh food. The entrees are very creative and prepared with sincere care. I highly recommend a visit and you will return. Saturday night is Russian music so don't expect a quiet evening. If you like dancing and fun go on a Saturday. Took my brother and the wives. Uncrowded. Great bottle of wine. Super appetizer plate with a seafood emphasis and generous portion. My wife's NY strip steak was marinated 36 hours, thick and excellent. Two orders of scallops & shrimp were wonderful, great sauce. The final entree was sea bass that was triumphant as well. Good, attentive service. I've been there for lunch that' frequently busy. Had a great meal tonight! Complimentary homemade hummus, a fresh side salad with a wonderful honey mustard dressing and one of the specials: scallops and shrimp on a bed of grains and julienned vegetables, with a sauce of sun-dried tomatoes, lemon and garlic. Excellent! My friend had a delicious tomato barley soup and the salmon. We skipped drinks and dessert, but the service was as attentive and discreet as any other party who ordered more. While the outside and the stairway entry are a bit discouraging, the dining room is pleasant and the food was terrific (so was the service, attentive and timely). Maestro Grill is a moderate to high priced restaurant located in the commercial section of Northbrook off of Dundee Rd. and Anthony Trail. Our 1st experience (6 people) there was fantastic!! Ambience, service quality of food. We had a lovely time. Next time I made a reservation for 10 people. During that call, I was offered a certain type of table (square to accomodate all) as a round table for ten was unavailable. When I made the reservation I was told inorder for them to accept the reservation, I had to give a credit card # that they said te card would not be charged, unless we didn't show up. On the night of the dinner, I was told that we could not have a square table, and when I asked for the credit card slip back they said they had merely written it in their reservation book, which anyone could have taken, and copied down credit card #'s. I offered a solution to the owner regarding handling credit cards, but it fell to deaf ears. The food ordered that evening was fine, but not presented as well as the first time. There are soo many great restaurants in the general area, I don't think that Maestros Grill lives up to their reputation. The wait staff was rude the on the second visit, and the owners went beyond being rude, and do not seem to care if anyone has a bad experience at their restaurant. read more

I've been here twice and my review of both times would explain why i only gave it three stars. the first time i came here, there was no seating available due to the place being overbooked. the second time, the place was empty and we were seated imediately and were served promptly. I actually just ordered lunch from this place because it is down the street and I thought I would give it a try since it had such amazing reviews. First off when I called and placed the order for pick up, the person who took my order didnt ask for a name, or tell me the cost or tell me how long before I should pick it up. Whatever small stuff right, well,as soon as i walked in the place it was freezing, but what do i care im not staying to eat. A man was at the door and had my food and bill, i paid and left. This is the part that is disappointing and what i was upset about. My food, my food was nothing like the discription and was nothing special to be honest. I had ordered the BBQ Pork Sandwich on a pretzel bun. Yeah, not on a pretzel bun, it came on a stale hamburger bun that they tried to grill to cover up the staleness. It was slopped on there and tasted like those microwave pulled pork meals you can buy. There were like ten regular french fries and BBQ sauce all over the outside of the container. The coleslaw top was not on so coleslaw was all over everything (which i asked for no coleslaw, I dont like it) So it was a mess and like nothing I thought it would be. We (a party of four) had a very unpleasant experience last friday evening. We ordered drinks. Three had drinks on the rocks, one straight up. Four asked for a little blue cheese on top of the salad. The meal was low average. When the bill arrived, we were charged .50 extra for each drink on the rocks and .75 each for the blue cheese. We questioned the waitress who called over the man who claimed he was the owner. First he blamed the computer and when we said the computer only does what is programed, he got very indignant. He berated us and said nobody would ever have questioned him where he came from. We asked where he came from and his response was: Russia. He continued that we were out of line and became extremely abusive using foul language. We believe he became abusive because he was caught. A restaurant has the right to charge whatever it wants and posts it on the menu. I do not believe it has a right to cheat. read more

We did not realize that we were going to a Russian cuisine restaurant, however, we were very open to the experience. It was disappointing, in that none of our food tasted fresh or appeared appetizing. We have to say that it was probably the worst food we have ever had at a restaurant in this price range. My husband had the prime rib, which included soup, salad and dessert as his entree, and I had an entree salad with crabmeat ($15) with a lobster bisque soup. Both soups were not flavored well, and lacked appeal in presentation. The crabmeat on my salad looked darker than it should have been, and had little crunchies in it, perhaps shells? The crabmeat did not taste fresh, and I didn't eat more than a couple of bites. The dessert that came with my husband's dinner was a cheesecake. It was all of about a half inch high, and tasted like it had been frozen and defrosted. It lacked any flavor and did not have a cheesecake texture. All in all, we felt we had very sub-par meals there. We went because of a restuarant.com cerrtificate that we had, and in the end, they would not honor it, even though we met the $35 bill (plus three glasses of wine in addition to the $35 in food), because the prime rib dinner was considered a "special" for $19.99 and in fine print somewhere at the bottom of the certificate page, it said that specials were not included. We had not encountered this circumstance during any of our many occasions using these certificates, so we were very surprised. We would not return there for the lack of ambience and sub-par food experience. The rejection of our certificate was just the straw! read more

So we looked through reviews and comments about this place, and everything seemed pretty good. From my experience, yes, the food was great, but the service was horrible. The waiter kept forgetting about our orders. At some point he was just ignoring us. I did not double check the receipt and ask for a copy (yes my fault) and ended up paying 200 dollars more. On the next day when I realized that there was a mistake in my receipt, I went there, politely asking why they charged us more, the owner brought a receipt with the total of 300, saying that this is what we paid. So they lied and purposely charged us more. He started yelling, swearing and kicking us out, saying that its his property. Yes, owner, it is your property, but it is a restaurant, you don't feed your family there only! We ended up calling the police. Very unpleasant experience. Now I question myself How can such a popular place, which such good reviews, have such rude staff? People like these, put shame on Russian culture! I am not saying that this would not happen in Russia, but at least there, places that are as popular as this one, have professional staff and treat you as they are supposed to!
