a food cart on a city street
    Anna H.

After I read all the Yelp reviews, I told myself that I need to try the food at Magdy's. I been sick of deli food and need to venture out of my neighborhood to get some yummy food for my belly. The line was shorter and moving fast when I stopped by. I told the woman that it was my first time so she handed me a menu...I ordered a Reg Lamb Gyro and gave her the money. As the line moves up, I tell the guys behind the cart what I want and they asked you if you want toppings with the meat. When I got back to work and open my food, lots of lamb...MMMM!! I will be back next time to try the Philly Cheesesteak!

I was actually headed to Subway, which is across the street from Magdy's, but the smell of street meat overtook my olfactories and sense of health. I waited in line, in the rain, for this. My toes got wet. Usually good, hot food compensates for moist toes, but I don't know if I was compensated fairly this time around. The line was short, which was a plus because I usually see it 13 people deep. They split up the payment and cooking duties, which frees up the cart chefs to work uninterrupted and speeds up the line. The words "Chicken Scampi" strengthen their cart display considerably. Mostly because I've never seen those words grace any other food truck, nor do I know what scampi definitively means. Therefore, a certain sense of exoticism and mystery has been associated with this place. I know what chicken tastes like but, chicken scampi?! Dude, it better be rude. To my 3-star dismay, the food wasn't rude enough but it wasn't too polite either. It was okay. Seis pesos para pollo y girocompás sobre arroz (Altavista is awesome!). Nothing special. Steaktruck still reigns in this area of the Midtown Financial District, but I actually couldn't find it today. The people who work here are actually really nice though. It's just too bad their niceness can't translate into food rudeness.

Tried the popular Philly Cheese Steak. Nothing too remarkable here. Just another NYC food cart on the grind.

It went from $6 to $7 within a year. The value used to be good, but lines are getting shorter as people look elsewhere for a better deal.

You got to get chicken and phily over rice. Not chicken and lamb. That's what makes it worth the slightly higher prices here.

The food is of very large portion. The meat is not the most fresh but it is marinated and cooked well.

Fedoroff's is great but pricey, and I remembered Olde City wasn't bad the last time I had it years ago, so I trekked in. Mistake. I should have stayed home. Garlic Parm wings were big and well-sauced, but when I bit in I found they were a bit drier than other wings I've had. And $19 for a plate of wings seems high. Italian fries were the same story - seasoned well, but tough. Nothing like the great ones at Yankee Stadium. When I get tough food I always wonder if they served me reheated leftovers from yesterday. For the cheesesteak, I ordered the "Authentic" which is supposed to come with your choice of cheese (Whiz/American/Provolone/Cooper Sharp/Ghost pepper jack); but I absentmindedly forgot to specify my choice and the server didn't ask me. It was only when the food came and I saw the Whiz when I realized. I would have appreciated a prompt so that I could have gotten Cooper Sharp. It was his first day so maybe he didn't know better. There was another server behind the bar who he was training under. I will give the servers props for giving me the combo price without me asking for it ($18 for cheesesteak, fries, and soda/water). But overall, stuff could have been better. The place was dead. I was one of three people in there but still felt ignored. There's a lot of TVs and a lot of beer options so I can see it being a good place to drink and watch a game. But the food is just ok. Very different than what I remembered.

We have developed a congenial friendship which was founded on La Fermière yogurts. Emre knows that I price shop so invariably I know when the time is right to buy these delicious yogurts at Eden. I often buy Siggi yogurts as here they are $1.99 each. The ladies - Dolores, Affou, Mamata, Savita, Tofu - at the checkout are friendly, kind and remember customers. A few speak French which I practice with them. Being originally Greek, the Dolmas in the prepared food section, are plump and particularly tasty. It's worth buying a few to take home. Adam looks taciturn but always is kind to me. He is behind the deli counter preparing sandwiches and always gives me a quarter pound of the Jambon de Paris. Miguel and Medina are also here. A loyalty card is worth having and once having accumulated many points I paid the princely sum of $1.61 for a pretty bouquet of roses in assorted colors that cost $11.99. Now that's a steal! Eden Gourmet is the sister supermarket to my beloved sadly closed Eden Gourmet of 14th street. This too is packed to the brim with fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses, dairy, chicken and meats. A large variety of sparkling waters, frozen entrees, ice creams and assorted temptations are here too. A small bakery has cakes and pastries available. You'll get all the usual grocery store sections, including fresh produce and a deli counter in the back. There isn't a ton of variety, with maybe two or three options for most items. But those options are consistently high quality. Whoever is stocking the shelves has good taste! The setup for paying is a bit weird, they've got a long counter up front in lieu of the usual registers with lanes. It can make lines a bit confusing during busier times, but not a dealbreaker by any means.

While I was there - a food blogger came in and shot a video. This place is no secret. My only "issue" is that the food is expensive. I TOTALLY get they are using high end ingredients - organics - locally sourced - etc. those items are not cheap. But my sandwich was normal sized - no pickle or any add on item - and I ate in but was not offered a plate or a fork. It's a deli.
