We had a staff luncheon here and was really excited to try their food, ive been living here in Tracy for at least 5 years now and have not had the energy to drive here until now lol! I ordered the calamari for appetizers which did not disappoint, but my entree was horrible. I had the mustard chicken and it was nothing special, the chicken was quite chewy... the garlic used was not fresh it was one of those minced one thats in a jar, i know it because ive used it in the past and tasted old.. so im dang sure that it was the jar ones that they used. The veggies were not seasoned at all maybe a tad but it did not do anything to elevate the chicken. Im giving 2 stars because i expected so much from this place considering the price, if this place was in the bay area or SFO this place would not make it. Below average over priced food. I ordered the lamb and it was incredibly bland. The potatoes that came with it were worse than the ones at Denny's. The calamari tasted like any other calamari I have eaten. My wife's pasta wasn't too bad, but again nothing special. The only reason this place has 4 stars is because it's in Tracy, which isn't exactly the culinary capital of California. Besides the food the service staff seemed unprofessional and rude (one waiter was talking on his phone in front of customers). What a nice and cozy restaurant! Ate here for the first time tonight with my sister. Service was a bit slow in the beginning, but the delicious food made up for it. Pretty expensive for the quality of food and nothing spectacular. I don't know if the high ratings are because it's considered 'fine dining' and there are such limited choices in Tracy. I guess if you've not eaten outside of Tracy this place would be acceptable, but it was just OK for me. I'd say save your money and drive over the hill to Livermore or Pleasanton. read more

I ordered the scallops and my BF ordered the Rib-eye in sauce (forgot the name of it) and both were amazing the sauce that came with the steak was to die for...i was dipping my scallops in it. Came here a few months ago...was told this was the "nicest" restaurant in Tracy. My fiancè and I were seated rather quickly took a while to get our order in, I ordered the filet and he ordered a pasta dish. My filet was clearly frozen, I asked for medium rare and it came out cooked correctly but it was still dry when biting into it. When I complained to our server she told me I should of added the peppercorn sauce. I am not a fan of peppercorn sauce, and if a steak isn't frozen it wouldn't need sauce! Our server continued to argue with me about the steak, she was rude! I didnt send my steak back at that point because our server was so nasty I thought she would do something to my food. This is by far the best formal dining place in Tracy. I do not like duck but the way they prepare their duck is out of this world. The steaks are also delicious. Great wine selection and deserts are fabulous. The place is very accomodating to children and the ambience is terrific. read more

It was my wife's birthday and I was looking for a nice restaurant to take her to. I stumbled across Magellan's on Yelp and figured we give them a try. The food and the way it was presented was absolutely amazing. We did feel a bit cramped but it's a small place. My hubby and I choose Magellan's when we are going out for a special dinner. We go each and every New Years Eve and usually our birthday's and a few other occasions too. It's not a cheap meal, but it's divine. The wine list is exceptional and the menu might look tiny, but what they do serve is fantastic. We had the good fortune of trying this place for the first time right after being absolutely fed up with service in restaurants around here in Tracy, and they blew our socks off. Call for reservations though, as the restaurant seats maybe a max of 30 people. My grandma came out and we took her to Magellan's once too, and she couldn't stop raving about the pork chop meal. We usually get some sort of fish and I literally dream about the lemon pasta with salmon. They have great desserts too. read more

We ate here last night with family and were astounded by the quality, intimacy, and quaintness of this tiny restaurant. We were personally served by the owner, Tomas. Service was friendly and helpful without being cloying. Tomas provided us with an excellent wine recommendation - a Caymus 2010 Special Reserve Cab - that paired amazingly well with our meals. Most of our party chose one of the specials. I had the Wild Boar Chops. The sauce of caramelized shallots was perfect with the chops. My wife greatly enjoyed the Atlantic Salmon; while several at the table devoured the fish special - I think it was bass. Two of us had steaks which looked spectacular. The steaks were garnished with nicely sauteed mushrooms. I had to resist the urge to steal one off the plate of the person sitting across from me. I was told that both steaks were done to perfection. Service: 10 of 10 Food: 9 of 10 Cleanliness: 9 of 10 Ambiance: 10 of 10 Price: 6 of 10 - not a bargain, but worth it Portion size: 7 of 10 The presentation on all the plates was very appealing. Portion sizes were average for this caliber of restaurant - right-sized to allow you to enjoy an appetizer and share a dessert. On the subject of desserts, six of us shared a cheese cake, bread pudding, and creme brulee. I will discuss this is more detail since the subject of desserts in near and dear to my wife's heart. OK. Cheese cake first... it was closest to me so I 'sampled' it more than my fair share. Although I'm fairly certain that this monstrously-sized slice of cheese cake was commercially prepared, it was drizzled with a wonderful chocolate raspberry sauce that made it very satisfying. The next dessert was the bread pudding. Hands down, our party voted the bread-pudding the best dessert of the evening - great texture, flavor, and presentation. It was served with a traditional vanilla sauce. Although well-portioned, this dessert disappeared within a minute of landed on the table. A close second in popularity was the creme brulee. It was sweet, but not overly so, with a delicate glaze of crystallized sugar that added a pleasant crunch and texture. Overall, this restaurant is the best we've experienced on our many visits to Tracy. I would highly recommend it. read more

With all the great reviews, we had to try it out for ourselves. We lived in Tracy for 5 years now and with limited selections of fine dining around town, we figure maybe that's the reason why this place has such great reviews. Not the case at all, Magellan's definitely knows how to keep their customers happy, the service was great, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was very inviting. We came here for our anniversary, my husband had the wild boar chops which he thought was excellent and I had the lamb chops which was cooked to perfection! Definitely a gem! read more

I love this place, even though the dining room is not large you can always expect to get consistent quality food every time! My favorite items are: the bread that is served with every table, a fresh sour dough bagette, the Wedge Salad with chucks of blue cheese home made dressing with a few candied covered walnuts, the Caprese, Ahi Tuna (healthy and delicious), and you have to try the Wild Boar special when they have it, it's melts in your mouth. My favorite drink is the french martini which is a Lemon Drop Martini with a float of Chambord (a delicious rasberry liqueur) which sinks to the bottom of your drink. in tracy, this is "fine dining" the atmosphere isn't what you would expect, i feel like it's more of a casual date night than a fancy dinner. they have a pretty good selection of wine, but their specialty is their entrees. i've been here twice and both times my bf and i looooved the food. he had something like a 28oz steak, which is HUGE, but delicious. I've had the pork and the salmon, both delicious.. but i liked the pork more. i also come here to satisfy my creme brulee craving and :) mmm. service is always amazing, water without asking, friendliest staff ever who appear to love their job. =) read more

I usually give business owners the benefit of the doubt. He seemed very disinterested in serving our party. The steaks we ordered were overcooked. The staff got the drink order wrong. My wife wanted to go to an "elegant " restaurant for a romantic dinner, so I checked out restaurants in the area. I saw the reviews for Magellan's so we made reservations for 8. When we got here, the place was nearly full, which is normally a sign of popularity. In this case, it's true. My wife ordered the Filet Mignon and I ordered the Sea Scallops,(my favorite seafood). My wife's filet was butter soft and she practically devoured it! She often times finds at least 1 thing to complain about, but tonight, nothing. My scallops practically melted in my mouth and the caper sauce was delicious. The potatoes and asparagus were also delicious. If there was one complaint, it would be that I got a small piece of onion skin in my dish and it was chewy enough to make my jaw hurt a little. Luckily, it was after I finished off the scallops and I was cleaning off the plate out of habit. Overall, Dinner was excellent and the service, considering only 1 waiter, also excellent. I love having a local restaurant that consistently serves high quality food. I can't resist ordering the seared ahi tuna every time but they do a great job on a variety of items, including steaks, which my kids love. The calamari appetizer is always a hit. After getting recommend to try this "old tracy" spot we were disappointed. Way expensive and lots of old people. We are in our late 30's and totally out of place. Salads were nothing worth $10. Plus you have to request bread wich is completely ridiculous and we had no idea till we we're leaving and everyone was getting bread but us. Yesterday my husband and two guests had a wonderful dinner at Magellan's. It was our first time there and we didn't know what to expect. The service was a little slow, but the food made it all worth it. My husband generally is not happy with the steak entrees he gets at other restaurants, but was pleasantly surprised at how delicious his steak at Magellan's was. All four of us enjoyed our meal as well as the fine wine and great desserts. We plan on going there again, and telling our friends about the wonderful food. read more

We went to Magellan's Restaurant on a Sunday night in December. There was four of us, and four other tables occupied. There was one waiter and everything was perfect.
