For Tracy you might say it's fine dining...and that's good. The inside decor reminds me of the cannery at fisherman's wharf...exposed brick, old... the food is mediocre, service is at par. Pricey, but if you are looking for a pleasant atmosphere with better than average quality food and celebrating an event without traveling far, this place deserves some merit. read more

This is truly fine dining in Tracy. I had been here only once before, and had a fine meal. So, I took my wife there to check it out. Really top quality here. Really a 4.5, but not an option. Have zero complaints. We called on a Sat at 5 ish, looking to come in at 6, no problem. Seated and greeted right away. Guillermo was our server, and did a fine job. Very attentive. I had the Ceasar, and wife had the Organic mixed greens salads. Both were very good. She had the prawns with fetttuccini, I had the mahi mahi in cream sauce. We both enjoyed our dishes. The deserts our incredible. Overall, we really enjoyed the meal here on Sat night, and will make a return visit soon enough. Highly recommend. read more

I was unfortunately not happy with my experience at Magellan's. when we walked in to the restaurant I was immediately slapped in the face with the smell of a dank and musky old folks home. When the sun went down, the lights did not come up inside. This left me needing a flashlight to see the menu. I ordered my steak medium rare and I am glad I did. My friend ordered his medium and it looked like it was cooked well done. My steak was ok, but not anything to write home about. The potatoes and vegetables were very forgettable as well. I so wanted this to be a great little restaurant since it is near the theater, but I was disappointed for sure. read more

Everything on the menu is amazing! Nice place to celebrate with friends and family. From appetizers to dessert the food never disappoints.

Girlfriend and I had a great meal here. It was a little dark to give photos justice. (Hate using a flash) Scallop dish was perfect! We also had the seafood and pasta was bit spicy for me, but my girl lobed it and will get it again next time. The creme brulee was perfectly done. read more

We finally got the chance to try Magellan's last night and it was wonderful! The duck and creme brulee were wonderful. I had the duck medium well and it wasn't dry. The cranberry glaze was flavorful without being sugary sweet. The custard in the burlee was light and just a delight. My husband had the shrimp fettuccine and said it had just the right amount of spice. Nice intimate room and very attentive wait staff. We will definitely be back again because this restaurant has pushed my San Francisco favorite (Scoma's) to the number 2 spot now, along with Stockton favorites like Papapavlos and Simese Street. It has been a while since my hubby and I were at this restaurant. We went there last night for our anniversary and the whole place looked different. It changed in a good way. I think the owner bought the place next door and there were extra tables for overflow. The restaurant is indeed cozy and I think only fits 10 parties at a time. My hubby and I were able to get in without a reservation, which was great. We sat next to some people we know as well. The menu had some lovely meals included like Moscow Lamb, which I ordered, chicken and steak as well. I should have taken a photo of the menu, but I was not planning to write a review on my time at the restaurant. The menu offered appetizers, which I did not order, but instead a Ceasar Salad before my main meal. I was very impressed with the salad because unlike other restaurants, this salad was not overflowing on the plate. There was just enough on the plate to not make me full before my dinner arrived. Also, this salad was just green lettuce and the dressing, with one crouton. My dinner arrived about 15 minutes later, while my hubby and I had a drink. My hubby had a beer, which we did have to ask when it would arrive, and I had a red wine. The wine glasses were a great shape with it being a bit tall on top and wide at the bottom where the wine was filled to. My hubby had a T-Bone steak which he said was the best he had tasted in a long time, from any restaurant in town. The presentation of our dinners on the plate could have been from a 5 star restaurant in the Bay Area or Los Angeles. This restaurant made me feel important and the chef would show himself to his guests behind the small bar just off the kitchen. We will be going here more often after these delicious dinners, our waiter and overall restaurant decor. Thank you! read more

Food was delicious! They did an amazing job of making us feel welcome, altering items for us, and truly topping off our whole vacation. We are very difficult and altered almost every menu item and Thomas was accommodating and LOVELY! I would not suggest altering the menu, one half of our group ordered as the chef dictated and if we medically could, the dishes were expertly designed. The ambiance was so welcoming and so cool! If a quiet, romantic restaurant with a fantastic Old-world ambiance and excellent, non-intrusive service are what you are looking for, then I would recommend Magellan's for this alone. Fortunately, they also include really good food to go along with the above. We enjoyed this restaurant for lunch and will go back for dinner. The house Merlot is an exceptional wine that I highly recommend you try. The city is building a pedestrian mall and park in front of this location, that when completed, will make this the spot to visit in Tracy. read more

We went for dinner. It is an small, intimate restaurant, lights turned down low. We had a nice table by the window, where ordered the organic mixed green salad and the Parmesan salad (loved it). For the main course, we had the salmon rigatoni and the Moscow duck. The duck was so delicious and tender! The service was good - attentive but not overbearing. It was so refreshing to dine at a restaurant where we actually had time to eat our salads at our own pace and relax BEFORE the main course arrived. My wife and I come here 3 to 4 times a year when we feel like a romantic getaway dinner but I do not feel like driving over Altamont to the bay. Small yet romantic place. Food is really good, and service is good. I always get something different every time and always good. I also like that they do not rush you out, and you can sit back, sip some wine, and you are able to laugh and talk with your loved one without yelling to be heard because the place is too loud. My boyfriend and I had dinner at Magellan's the day after Valentine's Day (to avoid the crowds). When we got there, the place was so dark, we thought it was closed but upon entering, we realized it was due to candle lit tables...very romantic. We made reservations and still had to wait about 15 minutes which was irritating. The place is set up a bit strange and it's very small so don't try to go without a reservation. The service was excellent and the food even better! The prices are a bit high but the food is worth it. Their wine list is good as well but I was disappointed that they didn't have more local wines. With Lodi and Livermore being so close, you would think that they would support the local wine industry more. Sorry but that's definitely a pet peeve of mine. read more

My husband and I had dinner here last week since our car broke down in Tracy. This place is small and very quaint. They recently rented the space next door (I'm not sure when) but looks like they're still working on getting a full bar area set up. Our server really took care of us. The wine options by the glass were pretty good. My husband ordered a brand of scotch that they had run out of. Our server gave him a stellar recommendation and a great pour! The butternut squash soup was a perfect holiday treat. I had the filet and he had the ribeye...both cooked perfectly as ordered. If we ever get stuck in Tracy again, we're coming here! read more

Had dinner there with my wife and a friend that is moving to S Carolina. Kind of a going away present. The food and service were excellent. My only suggestions would be if you have fish on the menu, make sure all selections are fresh. If not, don't offer them. I had scallops which were very good but the chef could have used a little more imagination on the potatoes. My wife had the Halibut and it was fresh. Delicious. My friend had the prawn and linguine. Also very good. Deserts were Tiramisu, Bread Pudding and Cream Brûlée. All were very good. The Bread Pudding was notch above the other two deserts. I will return. This has to be by far the worst serviced restaurant I have ever been to.. when you have to ask for menus after sitting for 15 minutes than have to ask if you can order after another 20 minutes is pretty ridiculous. We were sitting for a hours waiting for my family and i to order our dinner, yet they were able to keep our water glasses full! (Which I had to initially ask for as well) we are a brown family and we all felt that we were being treated differently due to that. My family still ordered the most expensive steaks off their menu, I didn't order anything after their rudeness. My wife and I come here often. I guess you could say that after the first time, we got hooked. Anytime we can have a nice meal for a special occasion but not wanting to travel we usually will choose Magellan's. However even if we're in the mood for a steak or pasta and have our small child Tomas is always more than happy to have us. If you're wanting to get away from the chain atmosphere spend a couple extra bucks you have to try Magellan's. I usually stick to my usual bistecca florentina but everything that we've tried has been fantastic. Also they may just have the best tomato soup that I've ever had. Now, if I was rating this restaurant on food it would be a 4 probably. But their service is what got me. My girlfriend and I went here on our anniversary after spending the day in Monterey. We had reservations for a very nice restaurant there but the somehow lost them. So driving home we found this place online and we had to eat somewhere. We walked passed the place 2 times looking for a door which is kinda tricky to spot and the server came out and welcomed us in. I seriously feel awful for not remember his name but he was excellent. I've only had the tiramisu and coffee here and it was one of my favorite dessert experiences. The restaurant was dimly-lit with nice tables and seating. It is located in a quaint, quiet part of downtown. My parents have come here for special occasions like Valentine's day and anniversary dinners for a few years now. Meats and fish are extremely fresh. The owner is a warm, friendly, personable man. From what I understand, he has a hand in every part of this restaurant which is what makes so wonderful! My favorite restaurant in Tracy. Great, atmosphere, wines, chef. My favs are scallops, linguine pescator, & calamari (best EVER). The only underwhelming items (an off day for me) was the aged file and lobstertail, slightly overcooked but aged meats are dry in general. Ill def ordered them again tho. read more

awkward service..very uncomfortable, dusty empty wine bottles, kinda unkept. wayyyyy wayy overpriced food. very u seasoned and bland. bread was hard and stale and butter was too cold to spread(pet peave). drinks were filled right away ill gove them that. i never had an empty drink. but the vegetable side had one piece of broccoli and the roasted potatoes were super dry and tasted microwaved. the meat was cooked decent but very bland. the appetizers were not good. i spent $150 for two and was super disappointed. Bistro 135 is so much better for fine dining in tracy. ill never go back here. i heard the waiter say "ive never seen so many losers" wtf kinda thing is that to say in front of your customers. i give this restaurant 4 farts!!! read more

Although we've lived in Tracy 15 years, this was our first time eating at Magellan's. I cannot believe we've waited this long. The crab cakes were excellent. I had New York steak and it was mouth watering. My husband had a seafood pasta & loved it! You must try the creme brûlée and caramel cheesecake for dessert! WOW! This is our favorite place for a special night out. The food has always been excellent, the service attentive. The bad reviews just show that something can always go wrong in a restaurant. People are by-and-large quiet when pleased and vocal, "yelping" when disappointed. We've some friends that agree that the food is first rate, but who will never set foot in the place again beacuse they didn't bring a birthday cake to his mother on her 80th birthday! "They should know that's an occasion." You won't go wrong here with a steak. You won't really need a knife with a medium fillet. My wife swears by the lamb, one of her favorites, but something she is often disappointed by in other places. I usually order the fish, as it's really something special. You've never had salmon this good. My first test of a new (to me) restaurant are the vegetables. I don't really like vegetables, but if the place gives some attention to the sides, you know they believe that the quality of their food is important. At Magellan's I always finish all my veggies. Treat yourself to a salad, or their creme brulee (sp?), they're special. read more

My rating is based on my experience after my meal. I ate here 2/15 for lunch as part of my corporate recognition of my years of service. I'm required to pay using American Express and from what I clearly overheard from the gentlemen that took my payment, he wasn't happy about it. It was stated within my earshot that taking AMEX is one of the pain in the asses about being in the restaurant business and he was clearly unhappy about that form of payment. Your feelings about your contractual relationship is your business, not mine. I should not have had to overhear any of this especially since I'm required to use a corporate card. I'll make sure my company is aware to take their business elsewhere if it involves using an AMEX card. read more

I ordered the halibut dinner. Didn't think I received halibut but I received the fish from overseas. I challenged the chef that the fish wasn't halibut. He said it was just a small halibut and that he doesn't filet his fish any longer to save and hour. What chef takes an hour to filet 1 fish? I eat halibut at least once a week when it is in season so I know what halibut is. I wasn't served what I paid for. I received the cheap fish and had to pay the halibut price. OUCH! read more

Based on a friends recommendation we choose to try Magellans on our way home through Tracy to have a nice dinner before our teens started school. We called and made reservations to stop for dinner on our way home from a great day boating on the lake. We arrived with a party of 6 at 7:40 on a Friday evening. We were the biggest party in the restaurant. We were seated immediately by the hostess. She poured us water while we looked at the menus. We had a few questions and her response in an unpleasant tone was "I don't know, I am the hostess". If you can't answer how about, I AM SORRY you will have to ask your server. Our waiter came over and asked if we wanted drinks, we said, "no but we were ready to order". He asked again about drinks, we told him we had been out in the sun all day and really just wanted water. The look on his face was one of aggravation. We pushed again for him to take our orders which he did. This waiter did not crack a smile or pleasant look. Some of us ordered salads which came quickly. Then almost 50 MINUTES after we ordered with no check-in from our waiter. We sat at our table fading fast and not one word of apologies from anyone. There was another waitress who walked around with a scowl on her face and the hostess looked frustrated as she reset tables. We heard a bell ring and knew it was our food. Our waiter was making bar drinks for another table and sent the other waitress to start bringing our food. The look on both faces were that of exacerbation. I am not sure what we did to deserve such visibly aggravated staff. Finally, our meals came, 4 of the 6 meals were similar pasta dishes, one was veal and one was filet. This should not have taken 50 minutes. The food was ok, not anything great after such a wait, not anything I would travel back to have or recommend to others. We finished our meals and were exhausted and ready to go. Our waiter asked about dessert, when we said, "no thank you", he again showed how frustrated he was.. We asked to have food wrapped up, my husband asked for a couple of slices of bread from the table to be added to his box. The hostess was nice enough to fulfill this request. I watched in the open servers area as our waiter approached her and openly showed his frustration that she was slicing bread for the box. It was a little after 9 pm, we paid our pricey bill with hefty gratuity included because we were a party of 6. At this point the owner was in the dining room talking to guests. He said to us as we began to depart, "that was fast." Sir if you think a ticket time of 50 minutes is fast you are sadly mistaken. Had we not had to wait so long we probably would have had a few desserts and coffee. The staffs disdain just made me feel that I wanted to get out, why would we want to linger with such a negative vibe in the space. Even the two teens with us knew the wait staff was not treating us like we were paying customers and the service and wait would not be okay on any food network reality show. We eat out a great deal and have had many kinds of dining experiences. I can't remember a time when 24 hours later I still NEEDED to write a bad yelp review. The owner should visit some of the best restaurants in Livermore or Pleasanton to experience good service, happy staff and delicious food for the same price of Magellans. Perhaps just watching food network will give you some clues. Sorry we gave it a try and will not return, we will keep driving next time. read more

I I dined here for the first time yesterday. I had to crabcake. And the Cesar salad. The salad was just OK little bit too overdressed soggy but the freshest tasting part of the meal. The crabcakes were underwhelming they tasted like a store bought premade microwaved to warm and covered in a very heavy sauce to hide it. I was very disappointed in the quality and the flavor for the price you would think that The restaurant would provide quality. My husband had a chicken breast that was pounded so thin that it was completely dry like it had been run over by a car and left in the road. And again covered in a very heavy dense fix sauce. The vegetables on his plate including broccoli were obviously frozen and then cooked too soggy mushy consistency. This restaurant there's a lot of room for improvement in the valley where the produce is top-quality the least they could do for the diners is provide fresh or at least that's what my expectation is of a fine dining. The service was OK the atmosphere was a little bit loud for a cozy dinner and the seating was cramped it is a very small restaurant. read more

Our first time here, beautiful setting candlelit dinner very romantic. We ordered 2 house red wines pretty good Indian prawns for appetizers, very good luv the sauce it came with. We ordered the Filet Mignon and Lamb shanks wait time about 30mins we. Thought they forgotten bout us so no one didn't even bother to come tell us. We finally got our dinner I didn't like my dish the lamb shank very very gammy. I couldn't keep it down I had my husband helped me finish it. First of all I feel terrible about the earlier reviewer about the American Express conversation because Tomas was talking with me! If he would have eavesdropped correctly he would have noticed we were laughing and joking about it and it was no big deal. I have to say Hands down this is my favorite Restaurant in Tracy...I have a few that I really love but this is where my heart is. The Salmon is big on my list but also the Ahi with Pesto. I've tried to get the recipe for his Mustard Chicken but he won't give it up. Great Wine list although I usually just let Tomas pick for me :) one of the things that sticks in my mind and why I will always be loyal to Tomas is on Valentine's Day when they and every other Restaurant in Tracy the were booked solid He took a To Go order for me last minute shows to me What a generous guy Tomas is...very funny too. read more

I was really hoping this restaurant would be good but I was quite disappointed. Arrived at 6 PM on a Fri eve with reservations which included a baby. When we arrived there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant and we were seated immediately. We asked for a high chair and were given one with a lap belt that had a knot tied in it and a broken buckle. I asked for another high chair and someone brought me a different one stating the buckle worked fine if you didn't touch it. Does anyone have a baby that doesn't move in a high chair? Neither seat was safe. My baby is very good in restaurants and didn't try to get out or fall out but it wasn't a very good start. The rest of the evening was less than average. It took quite a while to order and after over an hour after our arrival our food arrived. I had the halibut. The center piece cut was smallish and overcooked. On my plate I also received a tail piece which I have never seen served before. To say the least it was inedible. Dry, flavorless... Gross. Others in my party had undercooked steaks but no one wanted to send them back because they were afraid of how long the wait would be, one person asked for all potatoes and even after the waiter confirmed the order it was still wrong. My baby's pasta dish came about ten minutes after everyone else's food. No one was very satisfied with their meal. None of the servers asked us how our meal was. No one was attentive or apologized for all of the screw ups. We were a party of six adults and the baby and they added the gratuity in. I didn't think our party was big enough for that. I imagine they do that because they don't get adequate tips due to their poor quality of food and service. We won't be coming back. For $20-$30 a plate it would be worth taking almost the same amount of time driving over the Altamont for better food as it would be waiting for your food at this place. read more
