We're greeted with less than unwelcome enthusiasm from the lady working the desk/tables, as if we just ruined her day. We sat down on our table, presented with a menu, was almost rushed into ordering our food. After we ordered and while still eating talking. We weren't even ask if we needed a box or take our leftover, the lady just dropped off our check, without a word. As if we're being told, ok hurry up, eat and get out. Keep in mind, we were not showing any hostility or negativity towards the food or the restaurant. I can understand it if they are super busy, but there was only one other family that came in after us. My go-to Skewers place. I love their Skewers seasoning, and the price is more affordable than Chinatown. Highly recommend beef, lamb, chicken gizzard; skip the rest. I was a little hesitant to order from here because of the bad reviews. But with the lower prices, and a strong soup noodle craving, I took the risk and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the spicy beef noodle soup. The spicy broth was flavorful and the kimchi was fragrant and crisp. The only downside is that all of the other toppings were bland. I got a taste for noodles and bao today, found Magic Noodles on Yelp. Magic Noodles is located on the same strip where McDonald's(cottman and blvd) and Four Seasons Diner at. As we were walking in, we saw that the restaurant is pack so I thought that must be a good sign right? I was wrong. I ordered Magic Beef noodle soup, pork steamed dumplings(xiao long bao), mini sausage skewer, and bacon with mushrooms skewer. The noodle soup won the MOST BLAND award. XLB's soup is sour, wth??? Xiao long bao is sour when dipped in vinegar. I thought my tastebuds were off, ate a second one, still the same. I was expecting the skewer to be something like Solo's in Chinatown. You will get your money's worth. The wait was like 15-20 minutes, but you will be pleasantly surprised when the food comes out. The bowl is HUGE (10.5 inches wide according to measure app) and there's tons of toppings and freshly hand-drawn noodles. I got #101 which had beef, lamb, pork bone, mushroom, fungus, bok choy, and soy sauce egg for $10.95. There are cheaper options for like $8-9 and they even sell skewers, soup dumplings, and gelato. Take out/Pick-up review: four stars!! I've tried Singapore rice noodles at five other Chinese restaurants in NE Philly, and this has been my favorite bang for the buck. Good amount of meat (beef and chicken, because I don't like shrimp or pork) and cabbage was sufficient. Could have used more carrots and onions imo (but I say this about every Chinese place because I always want more veggies lol). I also got the sizzling cauliflower and bacon wrapped mushroom/white stringy fungi. Bacon wrapped at a spice level of "Less Spicy" was still REALLY spicy, but 100% worth the tears I cried because it was that tasty. The bacon was slightly-crispy on the outside and tender and soft on the inside touching the mushroom. And it's so cute!!! The cauliflower I got the "No spice" option, and it ended up being quite bland. I was kind of hoping it would have been seasoned with salt&pepper&garlic or something, but it really seemed like it was just cumin and no salt at all. Next time I know to get the "Less Spicy" option. My sister ordered the Vegetable Lo Mein and loved it. For 10-14$ for a meal a serving size of 1.5-2 servings, I'd say this place is pretty great. As other reviewers have mentioned, their customer service has room for improvement (the front desk man and woman seemed very stressed and curt when I picked up my order) but eh, if you're just doing take out or delivery I'd say it's worth it. Love that this place has creative options and flavor combinations, as well as the option to sub rice noodle for egg noodle for any options (great my me and my gluten-free self). Modern Shanghai dumpling and soup house on Cottman Avenue just off the Roosevelt Expressway in Northeast (Dong Bei) Philly. This is a growing Asian neighborhood that is slowly becoming a legitimate alternative to Chinatown (Center City) and Washington Avenue (South Philly) for your dining and shopping pleasure. Clientele is primarily Chinese, as is the staff. Cantonese is understood more readily than Mandarin. The menu is bilingual, with major focus on the beef/pork soup food group. Plenty of dumpling options, too, from Xiao Long Bao to wok fried pork gaozi. I was there for the XLB, so ordered two steam baskets (12) of them and a large bowl of Magic Noodles 101 (beef and bones in savory broth with mix of mushrooms and black fungus). The Shanghai created XLB were steamy and quite tasty with a touch of vinegar dropped in through the opened top knot for added flavor. Only downside was that the skin was so friable that the act of lifting them gently onto my spoon with the metal tongs cause them to tear, leaving a leaking dough sack to contend with. Every one of them tore open. Nimble handling to place them quickly into the spoon was the only way to salvage the contents. I managed to do that, but still had to suck some soup from the spoon each time. The Magic Noodle bowl was okay, but I found gnawing the beef bones to be messy and less than fun. The mushrooms were flavorful and I knew the fungus was good for health. This was a very tactile meal. Honestly after looking at the reviews, I was scared to even consider eating at this place but my family decided to eat here anyways and I'm so glad we did! The promotional soup dumplings were soooo good. I thought they were going to be sour due to the few reviews claiming they were but I guess they might have solved that problem by now. They were lightly wrapped and was filled with smooth porky broth. Best soup dumplings I've had in Philly! We got the spicy noodle with kimchi and porkbelly and the regular bowl of noodles with mushrooms and beef. The spicy broth kind of reminded me of how black nongshim instant noodles tasted like and the porkbelly was tender and just melted in your mouth. Servings were well sized. Decor is contemporary and relaxing. Menu is well designed and bilingual. We sampled the dumplings and pork bao as starters. They were delicious. For mains we had the Mount Qi Beef noodles, Magic Chicken noodles, and the pork-belly with rice. The Mount Qi noodles were hand drawn with small bits of chopped beef and vegetables, tofu, and egg. I and my wife love this place and all there stuff is usually tips but to day I got the Duck Raman and the broth was awesome as usual but the duck was just bones with very little meat. I've honestly lost count on how many times I've frequented this restaurant either during the day or late at night because it's such a comforting spot to be and the food hits the spot. I've had many of their appetizers, noodle soups, rice bowls, and skewers and most of them are solid. The pork belly house bao is probably the most disappointing dish I've had because it was dry but everything else is great. The staff is what you would expect at any chinese restaurant. There's not much hospitality but they get the job done. Now onto the food, the food was really good especially the soup noodles, soup dumplings, oysters, and scallion pancakes. It's got a good flavor to it though the food tastes well, modernized instead off truly authentic. The skewers were okay, in my opinion there was too much cumin on it. I was very excited to try out this new Chinese hand drawn noodle spot in Mayfair, but it was kind of disappointing. Me and my friend ordered the pork belly noodle soup and there were only 3 pieces of pork belly and the soup was a bit bland. We also tried their chili dumplings for starters and the sauce was very watered down, it literally looked like 4 steamed dumplings sitting in just a muddy red soup. You couldn't even taste the chili/spice. The service was ok, they were really nice but it seems like they themselves have trouble working together efficiently. I visited Magic Noodles with a few people, and we had a good sampling of their menu. The location is fairly new and modern, which was nice. I believe they've only been open a very short time. Their menu is somewhat of a mix...not quite Ramen, not quite Pho, but something in between. They have a number of noodle bowl options than span the list of beef, seafood, poultry, and vegetables. They have some appetizer options like pot sticker-type dumpling, and soup dumplings. They have a "sizzling" section on the back of the menu that are traditional Japanese skewers, coated with a seasoning/spice mix. They also have a "minced meat" noodle bowl that I'd not seen before, and I didn't have a chance to try. Overall, I was not really that impressed, and probably wouldn't go back. The noodles were pretty soft, and fell apart easily. The soup dumplings, while maybe a little unusual for this part of Philly, were far below the quality you'd get at a center city, Philly location. The soup was OK, but I found the ingredients a bit bland, as was the broth. The skewers were ok, but the seasoning they put on top of everything wasn't great. The service was OK, though I did have to have a back and forth with the server and manager about a "root beer float" that we got, that was just a bottle of root beer...it was a mistake/misunderstanding, but it took a long time to get it taken care of, and have it removed from the bill. That kind of thing happens, so it's not a big issue. Overall, a nice menu and atmosphere, service is pretty good, but the food quality is a bit bland and not quite up to par. It was a rainy Sunday and we were craving soup dumplings and Noodle soup. Our favorite spots in the city are Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House for soup , and Dim Sum Garden for soup dumplings. The bao was pretty good, first time I ever had it in general. Soft, warm, sticky bun with a moist, soft, flavorful pork coated in minced peanuts with some cilantro. Pancakes were crispy, thick, and chewy. Dumplings were so packed with filling they were open along the edges but were good, crispy with a moderately thin skin and the pork with chives flavorful. Spring rolls were fairly run of the mill. Overall, the dumplings were great, bao was good, pancakes okay, and spring rolls passable. I would try it again, interested by the noodle dishes.
