Had dim sum at China Gourmet after a basketball game and it was the perfect call. One of the few places that still has the push carts for fresh dim sum, which makes the experience even better. As soon as we sat down, the cart was right next to us with food ready to go. Can't ask for faster service than that! We got our usual favorites, shrimp dumplings, shui mai, sticky rice, rice rolls with pork ribs, and roast pork buns. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. We were in and out in about 30 minutes, which was perfect since we were short on time. Great food, quick service, and definitely a place I'd come back to again.

For a place that repeatedly came up as the top recommendation by Chinese locals for the best dim sum in Philly, China Gourmet has definitely lived up to the hype in its awesomeness based on my recent dining experience. Our group of 5 came here for a birthday celebration on a Saturday, and the place was already popping by around 1:30pm. We couldn't make a reservation ahead of time, but we didn't have to wait that long to get our table. Parking, on the other hand, took some time since the lot was getting pretty full from all the businesses in the area. By the time we got seated, a couple of dim sum carts stopped by our table with some of the classic dishes that I love: BBQ Pork buns, har gow (shrimp dumplings), and shu mai (shrimp and pork wonton dumplings). It's been a while since I've been to a place with dim sum carts, so I relished the instant gratification of having hot food ready for serving without delays. We ended up ordering a bunch more small plates as well as a couple of stir fried noodles dishes, including Singaporean noodle and beef chow fun. Singaporean noodle was amazingly good and flavorful in comparison with the beef chow fun, but I still liked them both. All the dim sum plates were also delicious. In terms of the price-point, CG is MUCH more reasonable compared to some of the dim sum joints in Philly's Chinatown. For all the dishes we ordered, everything came out to only around $40 per person. We even had leftovers since we couldn't finish everything we ordered. I'd wholeheartedly confirm the recommendation now: China Gourmet IS the place to go to when you're craving for dim sum in Philly.

Very large space, looks like banquet hall, and no wait on a Friday night. Staff were attentive, speak both Chinese and English. I was so pleased with the food! Very large portions for the price and well made too. On the saltier side but flavors are more authentic than what I've had in Philly's Chinatown. I was able to eat 5 more meals from the leftovers

This place is extremely busy around 11am on a Sunday, so give yourself 30 minutes before being sat. I came here with a party of 8. This place is not touristy, not upscale and not quiet or intimate. It is fast service, plenty of traditional dim sum, no chicken dumplings and I didn't see soup dumplings. The food is good, the service is rude and the price is reasonable. The parking is not easy, but not too bad, it's free. More about the food: this is the traditional type, they bring carts around to the table and you tell them what you want. If they don't have it, there will be more carts coming with different products. If you still don't find it, you can order off the menu, that's where you will find noodle and other dishes. The food is tasty so try everything you can. Not my favorite place for dim sum, but not bad.

This place opens till dinner, but dim sum closes at around 3pm on weekend. There wasn't a lot of options, maybe because we arrived at 2pm. Everything was overcooked because the skin was too soft and broke apart. The fillings are good though. The sauce of the rice roll is good; recommend you ask for a lot so you can dip other stuff. Congee has pork and century egg. Pretty spacious place with shared public parking lot.

Came for dimsum Saturday morning, close to noon. Surprisingly no wait, sat and ate right away. Pretty consistent flow of carts weaving through. Food was all hot and fresh. A lot of employees all over, easy to flag down for help. There were specific items we were looking out for, told one of the employees and she made sure to deliver it to us directly as soon as it made it out the kitchen. Love that. Food was all delicious. There's a woman that walks around with dumpling sauce or the carts have it as well I think, ask for it. It's better than the soy sauce. Interior was huge, lots of seating without feeling like we're on top of each other. If it means anything, plenty of my Chinese friends are die hard China Gourmet fans.

Great spot for reliable, tasty Chinese food in a very old-school style place serving all sorts of classics to fresh seafood specials. The restaurant has a very classic Chinese banquet style restaurant setup, with large circular family size tables and white cloths, tanks of fresh fish or other live sea animals, and a center stage area where you can host parties/weddings/whatever other events you want. They also have a very popular dim sum service during the day, but I went for dinner which is what I will be reviewing. The menu is sizeable and covers all sorts of staples like fried rice, braised or sauteed meat dishes, fresh steamed or grilled or fried seafood, etc. with lots of American Chinese options (stuff like orange chicken, beef and broccoli, etc) as well as more traditional dishes which include some of my favorites like salted fish fried rice, salt and pepper pork chops or seafood, and whole steamed or sauteed fish. We've been here for dinner a few times, and even like the place enough that we tried some of the dishes in preparation to host a family member's wedding party dinner here, and the food is always fresh, plentiful, and tasty although my one main point for improvement is that sometimes they can be little on the saltier side. The salted fish fried rice is a family favorite - fluffy smoky rice stir fried with eggs and little bits of dried salted fish which imparts an amazing umami savory salty flavor; if you haven't had it before, I highly recommend, it's a big step up from your basic chicken or shrimp fried rice. We also tried the whole fish sauteed with ginger on top of the fried carcass - it sounds weird, but they filet a whole fresh fish and saute the chunks with garlic and lots of fresh ginger and veggies, and with the big flat bone/carcass they lightly batter and deep fry which turns the skin and cartilage around the edges into a delicious crispy salty treat you can break off and eat with the rest of your meal. Overall, the menu is expansive and if you're looking for a no frills, filling, super Americanized or traditional Chinese meal, then this place is a great option.

Food is very good, huge portion. Unsure why every dish had a $8 up charge added on. Sea bass dish was pricey but the veggies were delicious. Restaurant is very bright, there's ktv rooms in the back with mahjong. Staff is pleasant. One ply toilet paper is not cool.

This is almost a MUST stop in Northesast Philly if you love Dimsum and chinese food the way I do. We were there for a wedding and decided that it was so good we came back the next day for dim sum! First off, any dish we order with shrimps in it, expect it to be FULLL. of shrimps from the dumplings to the crab balls to the shrimp rolls! The seasoning were seasoned to perfection, The peking duck buns was soft and duck was juicy! The chicken feet was soft soft it melts in your mouth! The space is big and spacey but always so crowded for dimsum there's almost always a crowd and line so get there early! The crab and maw fish soup had a bit more maw than ecpected but still delicious! Service was great, also accomodating to our big group!

First thing that was noticed was there was a fishy fried oil smell as you entered the front door. We have been here numerous times for Dim Sum and loved the experience but this time we came for dinner and I'm sorry there was an unpleasant odor walking in. The salt @ pepper calamari was delicious. The 1/2 Peking duck was very good as was the Fried Rice and the Dumplings. The Orange Chicken was also very good The visit to the rest rooms only increased the foul odor - not what you want in a restaurant. I would definitely hesitate bringing someone here because of this problem. We'll give it another shot but not with a guest.

    General Tso's Chicken
    Ty C.

Well, first and foremost, the food was excellent. I had General Tso's Chicken and my girlfriend had Jumbo Shrimp and Vegetables. Hot tea was served with the meal which was quite welcome. The meals were fantastic. Additionally, the service was quite attentive and they were all respectful, helpful, and quick. The ambiance fell a bit short. The space is just one big room that's quite brightly lit. It almost felt like a warehouse. The back half of the establishment was divided-off and there was a live band warming up back there for what seemed like a private party. It was quite loud and a bit annoying. Also falling short was the price. We were a bit shocked that these two simple meals came to nearly $50. Yes, prices have increased since the pandemic, but this was a bit too much. Good food, but the lack of ambiance and high prices will probably keep us from returning.

ATMOSPHERE: Intimate spot with a small loft, soft music and big windows for people watching. Takeout and deliveries seemed to be the majority of the business. RESERVATIONS: Not needed on this particular Monday night. PARKING: Street or garage. MENU: Sichuan & Taiwanese dishes. No dim sum. BEVERAGE: Lychee Martini Perfectly chilled and balanced, complete with a whole lychee garnish. FOOD: Dan Dan Noodles We got it plain but proteins were available. Thicker noodles coated in a thick peanut-flavored sauce with a little kick of heat. Very good but I'd definitely add either chicken or tofu to break up the carbs. Dry Pot Dish Served in a steel wok, we opted for chicken which was super tender. Very flavorful dish but it wasn't presented sizzling as the menu stated. Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup If you're a ramen fan and want something different, I think you'll love this as much as I did. A generous amount of thick noodles (available hand-ripped flat noodles are a $1 option), chunky slices of tender and fatty beef swimming in a savory and slightly sour dark-hued broth. Forgot to nix the cilantro but it wasn't overly loaded. Total yum. SERVICE: Greeting was immediate and friendly. Male server was knowledgeable but there was no follow up. OVERALL: A very enjoyable alternative to traditional Asian cuisine.

On this cold almost summer day, Nan Zhou was hustling and bustling. Separate parties at the same round table and clients coming in and out of the restaurant facade. Warm lighting and active banter. This place was packed, which is always a good sign, and even with that the staff stayed super prompt and professional. The house special was my favorite. I got it with the knife-cut noodles and it was perfect with the broth. The noodles had that slightly uneven, chewy texture that really holds onto the soup. I never thought I'd be the type to talk about "mouthfeel" but here we are. The broth itself was rich and savory with a deep beef flavor, a little bit of oil on top that adds body without feeling too heavy. It's that classic, comforting Chinese beef noodle soup done really well. I added a braised egg, which had great flavor soaked into it, though it was served cold, which threw me off a bit. The mapo tofu with noodles was also really solid. It had that signature spicy, numbing kick from the Sichuan peppercorns, balanced with a savory, slightly salty sauce. The tofu was soft and silky, and mixing it with the noodles made it extra satisfying. It's got some heat but not overwhelming, just enough to keep you going back for another bite. The shrimp stir fry was lighter but still flavorful. The shrimp were cooked well, tender with a slight snap, and the sauce leaned more on the savory side with a mild sweetness. It felt like a nice balance alongside the heavier noodle dishes. Couple practical things: it's cash only, but there's an ATM right by the seating area which makes it easy. And the portions are generous for the price, so it feels like a really good deal. Overall, super satisfying spot. Busy, a little chaotic, but the food absolutely delivers. Definitely a go-to if you're craving hand-pulled noodles.

However, I found that the meal didn't live up to what I remembered at the UCity Han Dynasty or the Sichuan food I've had at other spots. My partner and I ordered the dan dan noodles and double cooked pork belly to share, our longtime regular order. The portions were generous and prices were affordable, but both dishes fell short in some ways. The dan dan noodle sauce was mostly sesame-based with little of the chili heat I remembered, and there was only a bit of the ground pork topping. It left me wondering whether they hold off on the spice at this location due to the clientele, whether they changed the recipe, or whether it was just an off day. The pork in the double cooked pork was overcooked and tough, and the dish didn't have enough of the veggie components (leeks and peppers) to balance it out. Another minor nitpick - there was a World Cup game going on while we ate and the multiple downstairs TVs had the game on. The second floor where we were seated also had a nice big TV, yet it seemed to be left on a screensaver slideshow of random landscape photos. Would have been nice to watch the game! I was overall left feeling pretty meh about the meal. I'd give the UCity location another shot, but don't think I'd come back to the Old City one.
