TLDR: Quiet, friendly, great food. Went here for a night out and was pleasantly surprised. The bar is pretty quiet, and drinks were great. The bartender was really friendly. Food was surprisingly fantastic. I loved the Tri Tip Sandwich, it was very tender and the bread was soft and tasty. My partner thought her burger was pretty good as well. Have heard about Magoo's for a while and not sure why I never have gone except that the reviews have always been very mixed. Well I will return, if for nothing but the homemade food. Interior: medium sized dining room that leads to a larger bar area in the back. Most people were in the bar area. Staff: friendly and helpful. Shared responsibility of the bar and dining room for our waiter so service was a bit slow but understandable as we were 1 of two tables in the dining area and the bar area was hopping. Food: a real down home feel. The food tasted fresh and not packaged or canned. Had a simple cheeseburger, bowl of chili, and nachos. Between the two of us. Food tasted great. Chili was full of meat and flavor. Burger and bun was amazing. Nacho chips were light and crispy with adequate toppings. Talked with a woman who I think was the owner and she told us that nearly everything including bread and buns are homemade and the chili was her mom's recipe (slightly modified) We will come back for sure Real score of 4.5 stars but I'm not gonna drop a full star. The ambiance was nice it was comfortable and quiet in there and the waitress was very attentive and polite. However I was a little bit disappointed with the fish and chips I ordered. They weren't bad but they were kind of bland not that fish and chips is anything fancy, but it was pretty basic. Beer batter was all right. The fries were okay but had a kind of coating on them that I would rather have not had. Probably should have ordered something else This is my first time here the place is supposed to be known for pizza and has a good reputation for it. The menu is pretty basic not much of a selection. I'll probably come back and try something else but I think the fish and chips was rather expensive as well. Came in craving a good steak and they absolutely delivered. I ordered it medium and it came out perfectly cooked, juicy, tender, and well-seasoned with a nice sear on the outside. Every bite was flavorful and satisfying. The portion size was generous and worth the price. The sides complemented the steak well and everything tasted fresh. Under new ownership so ignore all reviews prior to November 2023. Food is BLAND and menu has typos that are misleading. I gave this updated review a few weeks and multiple visits before writing. Hopefully the new owner will see the new reviews. I've been a long time magoos loyal patron and was SO excited for them to finally reopen. There was no major remodel. They reduced the dining room walls from full walls to pony walls which did open the front room. But bathroom doors are still hanging off hinges but at least plumbing works. Food needs some help. Elias was a phenomenal cook prior to leaving magoos a few years ago before Marc had come in. Not sure if the new owner is micromanaging how he cooks or what happened but its not up to the usual fare expected. Homemade pizza tasted like frozen cardboard pizza. Had zero flavor. Burgers while well cooked also lacked flavor. Fries came out half limp/soft and half crispy but well salted. Ranch is obviously bottled and not homemade. Tri tip sandwich sometimes you can bite through other times it's tough and you have to eat the meat outside of the sandwich. Overall food is just very disappointing after a few weeks of being open. BLAT does not come with avocado and had a tiny amount of bacon on it. Not worth the cost. Drink costs are also high at this point and no happy hour menu. $7.50 per white claw and over $23 for a pitcher of beer. Hopefully in a few weeks, this place gets back to its former glory or better! read more

There's sooo many good things to say about Magoo's. Firstly I'd like to say that this was the spot that my boyfriend and I had our first kiss :) the first half year we dated 3 years ago I believe we went to Magoo's once a week after work whether it be with co workers or just us. We kinda stopped going out as much just to save money cus of 'adulting' Yesterday my bf mentioned he had been craving Magoo's again and so we had a spontaneous random trip right after work. Unfortunately no happy hour but it's okay. We normally get house salad with fried chicken tenders on the side, Mac and cheese balls, and sometimes fries. This time we decided to get something a little different and man we're the sizes huge! * Mac and cheese: To DIE for. So very cheesy and had loads of flavor. Buffalo chicken added a nice kick. * bacon cheeseburger with onion rings: had medium well. Nicely put together. This is what a real burger looks like. Onion rings you can tell is made by scratch which is a bonus. * Tater tots: so perfect. This came first and we almost finished it and got full before we waited for the rest of the food. Crunch and cheesy and so addictive. We also had an Irish carbomb and a Roy Rogers with 2 waters on the side. As good as this place always is, this moment is what wow'd me... I asked the bartender (I guess she was taking food orders too) had aioli sauce. They did not. But instead of saying they didn't she said "mmmm ima make something for ya." Came back 5 minutes later with an aioli sauce she or the chef had made from scratch!! I didn't mind if they didn't have the sauce. It's the fact that she went out of her way to make it for me and let me tell you, it was AMAZING. I admire service that goes above and beyond whether it be a small or big gesture because that's how I am as a server as well. Coming back brought back a lot of memories. It was the perfect meal with the perfect date and we both couldn't have been happier. Unfortunately couldn't finish it all but definitely finished it at home later. We live down the street from Magoo's and have always been curious to try their food. I saw them advertised on a local Facebook group as outdoor dining open and decided to have dinner there. There is plenty of parking on the side of the restaurant and we were able to easily grab a table on the side patio next to the parking lot. They also have seating in front on Contra Costa Blvd. We were both craving burgers, I got the Swiss Mushroom burger and my Fiance got the Black and Blue Burger. He got a side of fries and I had the side salad. The burgers satisfied our cravings, they were made well with lots of toppings and a decent size. The fries were good and the side salad was huge. I ordered a beer, it was a little challenging since they didn't have a beer list and have quite a few on tap. I asked our server for a Hazy IPA and he never told me exactly which beer it was and who made it. read more

VERY very disappointing. 2nd time trying to go in after the change of cooks and unfortunately this place is doomed for failure. Used to be packed with locals and regulars, now its cricket sounds and empty. Ownership should make a revisit or perhaps they just don't care. Came here after a night out doing karaoke at around 1. Our bartender was very friendly and helpful. She actually offered us free Stella Artois beer glasses if we ordered Stella. Loved the music in the bar. It was mostly classic hip hop from the 90s and 2000s. Loved our bartender's energy and enthusiasm during our night out here.
